Fender Bender (2016)
That's how you do a slashers. And how you do a Bluray.
I am thoroughly impressed with this movie, and even more so with the bluray. Why? Well, the bluray from Scream Factory happens to have a neat little feature where you can watch the movie as though you're watching a jacked up old VHS tape. With tracking issues included! How sweet is that.
Oh, and let me count the ways that I love this movie. I love the plot and how the killer chooses his victims, I love the gimp outfit he wears (haha) and his weapon that looks to be a retractable knife with a car door handle. Some serious though was put into these details and you can tell those behind these thoughts were fans of the genre. I dug the characters, they were pretty good, the main girl (Makenzie Vega) and the actor playing the killer (Bill Sage) being the obvious best. The music was great, the ending was great, this is just an all around great slasher movie. I do however have a few minor quibbles, such as, I would have liked to see a little more creativity when it came to the kills, and maybe a little more of a body count. Also, it would have been nice to see Hilary show a little bit more in that shower scene (same goes for the girl in the opening scene). The movie could have benefited from a little more slasher sleaze. But those gripes don't stop this movie from getting a strong 8/10 rating.
I highly recommend it. And it is a must own on bluray. All slasher movies should have the "dirty VHS feature."
When a Stranger Calls (2006)
A perfect gateway slasher movie.
Yes, it lacks many of the things I enjoy when it comes to slasher movies, but the atmosphere and prolonged sense of foreboding were brilliantly crafted. This was like one long continuous cat-and-mouse scene played out over the course of the whole runtime. Which sounds like it could be redundant after the first 30 minutes, but it really wasn't. I think a lot of this has to do with Camilla Belle being perfectly cast here. She was nothing short of amazing in this role, and looked and acted like she was just pulled from a babysitting gig to do this movie. This is essentially a one-man band (one-woman band) riffing some Hendrix for 90 minutes, and it did not disappoint.
This is one of those strange movies that gets a pass from me, even though it lacks so much of what makes a slasher a slasher. Definitely worth checking out if you're a hardcore slasher fan who can recognize certain elements of the subgenre being played to the max.
The Detained (2017)
Watching this made me feel like I was in detention.
This movie feels like a punishment for people who like slasher movies. There is no payoff whatsoever! None of the "kills" were shown at all. The characters were bizarre and almost slapstick, yet they were still tied down and restricted to this MTV type of script.
There was potential here, and a decent hand to be played with these actors and location, but those in charge of this 'mistake' of a film seemed to only have an interest in trolling slasher fans.
Don't fall for it.
The Babysitter (2017)
I guess the originality is in the 60 min. we didn't get.
I think it's amazing (and a little funny) that such a short film could make me feel like I wasted my time. Seriously, if you're a slasher fan, you're best to move on, because this thing is a 31 minute bore. The main girl is annoying, the black and white is dorky, and the big revelation is laughable. This thing has no kills (except for a lame bag-over-the-head), no cool looking killer, no creativity, no group dynamic, no suspense, no scares, no nudity, nothing. I've seen episodes of 'Murder, She Wrote' with more balls than this.
