Lea's Top 10 Movies - Worst of the IMDb Top 100

by siit | created - 06 Apr 2012 | updated - 05 Jul 2013 | Public

These are movies I have seen in the Top 100 and think they are not worthy of their position or even in the top 100 at all !

I cite the rank where it is, where I think it should be, and the reason(s) why.

1. Citizen Kane (1941)

PG | 119 min | Drama, Mystery

100 Metascore

Following the death of publishing tycoon Charles Foster Kane, reporters scramble to uncover the meaning of his final utterance: 'Rosebud.'

Director: Orson Welles | Stars: Orson Welles, Joseph Cotten, Dorothy Comingore, Agnes Moorehead

Votes: 466,144 | Gross: $1.59M

I just think it's totally and utterly over-rated. Sure it would have been great in that era of the emerging political and economic climate, but now it's even more pointless.

Rank: 39 !! Where it should be: 500+

2. 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968)

G | 149 min | Adventure, Sci-Fi

84 Metascore

After uncovering a mysterious artifact buried beneath the Lunar surface, a spacecraft is sent to Jupiter to find its origins: a spacecraft manned by two men and the supercomputer HAL 9000.

Director: Stanley Kubrick | Stars: Keir Dullea, Gary Lockwood, William Sylvester, Daniel Richter

Votes: 719,987 | Gross: $56.95M

I find this movie utterly boring and rather snobbish in its attempt to appear futuristic, suave, artisitc and edgy. Maybe its just so outdated, but its so slow for my tastes and quite frankly I do not, and never have thought the score fit the image.

Rank: 91 Where it should be: not made at all!!... 400+

3. The Departed (2006)

R | 151 min | Crime, Drama, Thriller

85 Metascore

An undercover cop and a mole in the police attempt to identify each other while infiltrating an Irish gang in South Boston.

Director: Martin Scorsese | Stars: Leonardo DiCaprio, Matt Damon, Jack Nicholson, Mark Wahlberg

Votes: 1,423,027 | Gross: $132.38M

Too disjointed and unrefined for my tastes. It just starts and bounces from one thing to the next until it ends.... I don't care who's in it, it still would be unpalatable to me.

Rank: 53 Where it should be: 300+

4. Star Wars: Episode VI - Return of the Jedi (1983)

PG | 131 min | Action, Adventure, Fantasy

58 Metascore

After rescuing Han Solo from Jabba the Hutt, the Rebel Alliance attempt to destroy the second Death Star, while Luke struggles to help Darth Vader back from the dark side.

Director: Richard Marquand | Stars: Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, Billy Dee Williams

Votes: 1,121,953 | Gross: $309.13M

I don't know whether the new movies made this look dated or some other reason... but it's just not up to a Top 100 standard

Ranked: 95 Where it should be: 300+

5. Toy Story 3 (2010)

G | 103 min | Animation, Adventure, Comedy

92 Metascore

The toys are mistakenly delivered to a day-care center instead of the attic right before Andy leaves for college, and it's up to Woody to convince the other toys that they weren't abandoned and to return home.

Director: Lee Unkrich | Stars: Tom Hanks, Tim Allen, Joan Cusack, Ned Beatty

Votes: 892,889 | Gross: $415.00M

Oh come on. You can't think of a dozen other movies more befitting a place in the Top 100?? I mean it's ok, but one of the best 100 movies of all time?!?! I don't think so.

Ranked: 44 Where it should be: 250

6. The Dark Knight (2008)

PG-13 | 152 min | Action, Crime, Drama

84 Metascore

When the menace known as the Joker wreaks havoc and chaos on the people of Gotham, Batman must accept one of the greatest psychological and physical tests of his ability to fight injustice.

Director: Christopher Nolan | Stars: Christian Bale, Heath Ledger, Aaron Eckhart, Michael Caine

Votes: 2,872,431 | Gross: $534.86M

I bucked the trend with this rubbish. I do have a review of this movie which would best be read before giving criticism of my choice.

Ranked: 8 Where it should be: 200-250

7. Requiem for a Dream (2000)

R | 102 min | Drama

71 Metascore

The drug-induced utopias of four Coney Island people are shattered when their addictions run deep..

Director: Darren Aronofsky | Stars: Ellen Burstyn, Jared Leto, Jennifer Connelly, Marlon Wayans

Votes: 899,201 | Gross: $3.64M

I just don't understand why this movie is ranked so high. There are far far better movies in and out of the Top 250 than this.

Ranked: 65 Where it should be: 250

8. Inception (2010)

PG-13 | 148 min | Action, Adventure, Sci-Fi

74 Metascore

A thief who steals corporate secrets through the use of dream-sharing technology is given the inverse task of planting an idea into the mind of a C.E.O., but his tragic past may doom the project and his team to disaster.

Director: Christopher Nolan | Stars: Leonardo DiCaprio, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Elliot Page, Ken Watanabe

Votes: 2,552,428 | Gross: $292.58M

The hype of this movie made it in a way a must see... if only to see what the fuss was about. And it didn't fail to disappoint. Lots of action, special effects and a script that 'seems' to be original. But I found it rushed. It just seems incomplete. Decent effort, but I felt it could have been much better.

Rank: 14 Where it should be: 175-200

9. The Godfather Part II (1974)

R | 202 min | Crime, Drama

90 Metascore

The early life and career of Vito Corleone in 1920s New York City is portrayed, while his son, Michael, expands and tightens his grip on the family crime syndicate.

Director: Francis Ford Coppola | Stars: Al Pacino, Robert De Niro, Robert Duvall, Diane Keaton

Votes: 1,364,937 | Gross: $57.30M

I am one who feels this got all it's hype, fame and love due to the first movie. It was alright but no where near a master class of a movie that is ranked as the third best movie of all time?!?!?! Not a chance.

Ranked: 3 Where it should be: 175

10. Rear Window (1954)

PG | 112 min | Mystery, Thriller

100 Metascore

A wheelchair-bound photographer spies on his neighbors from his Greenwich Village courtyard apartment window and, despite the skepticism of his fashion-model girlfriend, becomes convinced one of them has committed murder.

Director: Alfred Hitchcock | Stars: James Stewart, Grace Kelly, Wendell Corey, Thelma Ritter

Votes: 522,341 | Gross: $36.76M

Don't get me wrong, this movie is fine. I just don't think with the quality of movies that have been out in the 50++ years since this release, that it's deserving of that high a rank.

Rank: 22 Where it should be: 150
