Having worked in the movie business most of his over 100 Years of life Kaneto Shindô directed 48 films and wrote 238 scripts. As a movie Director He was the most raw kind of animalistic interpreter of humanity I have seen. A wonderful delight to watch for those people with a touch of Satanic character.

As with many good Japanese movie directors he is barely known at all in the west and less then half of his works are even translated for subtitles.

Unsurprisingly undervalued female intellectual. (Undervalued, not because of being a woman but because of the kinds of things she reveals.) Her keen insight on sexuality and the sexuality of women in particular and shamelessness in showing it through her art, make it inevitable that she will be shunned by most "civilized" people.

Also if you think nobody can understand how women think watch "Female Perversions" and you may just change your mind about that if you are intelligent enough to unravel what unique insight that masterpiece can reveal.

To get in to the heart of "Let the Right One In" and see the masterpiece you have to be of the right kind of character. Otherwise it's just a good vampire movie.

As a masterful actor he uses a lot of time earning money by collaborating on big money B-Sh*t projects and is barely known at all as a director of his one time masterful directorial debut.

With clearly being very intelligent he could be a great intellectual, if only he would have had more courage of his own. He seems like a brave and faithful soldier, but a soldier of his own peers none the less and not the master of his own mind.

Had he been a master of his own mind he would not have only been able to so accurately criticize everyone who is not part of his own reference group. There is too much red humanism in him to criticize the very fundamental failures within humanism. He can very well depict perversion and twistedness of individual ideologies, but fails to bring out the human qualities that breed them.

His style of directing usually targets a single powerful and important subject and its perverse nature, often revealing a generally held misconception within a culture.

Medea, Salò, or the 120 Days of Sodom, Teorema

Very clearly the greatest and best of all movie directors in terms of making the most out of what can be done with movies Tarkovsky, while working in USSR, was also a deviant intellectual in his storytelling.

Last European made movies though seem totally unworthy of wasting ones time with. Perhaps he was only able to work artistically in the atmosphere of USSR.

The movie "Joshua" is so sharply cunning it takes intellect and insight to the human psyche to not misinterpret it completely by interpreting it through the pitfalls of status-qua psychology. (And clearly the producers on FOX have misinterpreted the story, since they have agreed to produce it.)

Though clearly able to grasp great concepts and having made a couple masterpieces, Bernando Bertolucci must have done it with the help from outside influence because he has clearly degenerated with the times. It doesn't take mutch of an intellectual to only be an intellectual in intellectual times, namely the 60's and the 70's.

Chaplin has a few intelligent themes he can bring out in an intelligent way, but over all there is too much humanist in him for him to get very far at being a proper intellectual.

Despite looking like an intellectual and talking like an intellectual, he still is an intellectual.

I like Woody Allen and Woody Allen is good, even Great. I also like many directors that aren't as good as Woody Allen but Woody Allen is the mark for me in this list of movie directors to stop listing intellectual directors. With so much the style of trying too hard and just barely making it, you cannot be worse then Woody Allen and still be an intellectual.

There may still be some directors that should be on this list that I have forgotten or have not watched enough movies from yet.
