1. An American in Paris (1951)

Passed | 114 min | Drama, Musical, Romance

83 Metascore

Three friends struggle to find work in Paris. Things become more complicated when two of them fall in love with the same woman.

Director: Vincente Minnelli | Stars: Gene Kelly, Leslie Caron, Oscar Levant, Georges Guétary

Votes: 36,895 | Gross: $4.50M

I noticed the other day that I'd seen thirteen Minnelli features, probably more than any other Hollywood director. I thought I'd list them here.

One of M.'s most sensual movies (the final ballet with the paintings as backdrop), it doesn't really move me. Kelly's fine, liked Leslie Caron and Levant very much.

2. Lust for Life (1956)

Approved | 122 min | Biography, Drama

68 Metascore

The life of brilliant but tortured artist Vincent van Gogh.

Directors: Vincente Minnelli, George Cukor | Stars: Kirk Douglas, Anthony Quinn, James Donald, Pamela Brown

Votes: 12,511 | Gross: $3.48M

I like the way Kirk Douglas plays van Gogh, and Anthony Quinn is the perfect foil as Gauguin. That scene in the fields with the wind howling and the two men ready to kill each other has stayed with me a long time. Beautiful and moving (also see Pialat's Van Gogh).

3. The Bad and the Beautiful (1952)

Passed | 118 min | Drama, Romance

86 Metascore

An unscrupulous movie producer uses an actress, a director and a writer to achieve success.

Director: Vincente Minnelli | Stars: Lana Turner, Kirk Douglas, Walter Pidgeon, Dick Powell

Votes: 16,465

Kirk Douglas again doing a great job as a swinish producer who manages to make life hard for a number of people. The thread that moved me most was Dick Powell's as the prize-winning novelist.

4. Designing Woman (1957)

Approved | 118 min | Comedy, Romance

A sportswriter and a fashion-designer marry after a whirlwind romance, and discover they have little in common.

Director: Vincente Minnelli | Stars: Gregory Peck, Lauren Bacall, Dolores Gray, Sam Levene

Votes: 5,470

This is an example of what happens when M. is handed a poor script and works with actors who have no real charisma together--Peck and Bacall. Scene after scene goes flat and there's hardly a joke in almost two hours.

5. The Band Wagon (1953)

Passed | 112 min | Comedy, Musical, Romance

93 Metascore

A pretentiously artistic director is hired for a new Broadway musical and changes it beyond recognition.

Director: Vincente Minnelli | Stars: Fred Astaire, Cyd Charisse, Oscar Levant, Nanette Fabray

Votes: 12,582

Fred Astaire and Cyd Charisse are terrific together; Dancing in the Dark is a wonderful duet and Oscar Levant and Nanette Fabray are very funny. Superb.

6. Tea and Sympathy (1956)

Approved | 122 min | Drama

A new senior at a boy's prep school, finds himself harassed by the machismo culture of his classmates and the unfeelingly behavior by his father, only being treated with decency by his roommate and with affection by the coach's wife.

Director: Vincente Minnelli | Stars: Deborah Kerr, John Kerr, Leif Erickson, Edward Andrews

Votes: 3,217

Time has dissipated some of the impact this story must once have had. Today gay men are getting married to other men, which must have seemed impossible in the 50's. The performances are so good though that I can be carried along by the narrative: Deborah Kerr is really good as the teacher's wife, John Kerr is the troubled boy and Edward Andrews is marvellous as the boy's father.

7. The Cobweb (1955)

Passed | 134 min | Drama

At a private psychiatric clinic, the daily dramas and interactions between the doctors, nurses, administrators, benefactors and patients are accentuated by the personal and family crises of these individuals.

Director: Vincente Minnelli | Stars: Richard Widmark, Lauren Bacall, Charles Boyer, Gloria Grahame

Votes: 2,092

It's not really about the drapes that will decorate the clinic, it's the power struggle going on between two headstrong doctors, Boyer and Widmark, and the frustration of Widmark's wife Gloria Grahame. Lauren Bacall plays a teacher whom Widmark briefly falls for. Great entertainment.

8. Gigi (1958)

G | 115 min | Comedy, Musical, Romance

82 Metascore

Weary of the conventions of Parisian society, a rich playboy and a youthful courtesan-in-training enjoy a platonic friendship which may not stay platonic for long.

Directors: Vincente Minnelli, Charles Walters | Stars: Leslie Caron, Maurice Chevalier, Louis Jourdan, Hermione Gingold

Votes: 24,508

Cecil Beaton designed sets and costumes, so they're out of the top drawer. The songs aren't much however, even with Maurice Chevalier singing them. So it's Minnelli and Beaton throwing beauty in our eyes all through the picture.

9. Some Came Running (1958)

Approved | 137 min | Drama, Romance

68 Metascore

A veteran returns home to deal with family secrets and small-town scandals.

Director: Vincente Minnelli | Stars: Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Shirley MacLaine, Martha Hyer

Votes: 7,380

Frank Sinatra is a soldier returning rather late from the war, Martha Hyer the repressed woman he starts seeing, Shirley Maclaine the working class girl who loves him and Dean Martin is a gambler with no ties to anybody. They're all splendid. The sets and camera work is top notch: superb picture.

10. Bells Are Ringing (1960)

Not Rated | 126 min | Comedy, Musical, Romance

61 Metascore

A Brooklyn answering service operator becomes involved in the lives of her clients, including a struggling playwright with whom she begins to fall in love.

Director: Vincente Minnelli | Stars: Judy Holliday, Dean Martin, Fred Clark, Eddie Foy Jr.

Votes: 3,812 | Gross: $6.16M

The picture is worth seeing for Martin and Hollyday, who are terrific as the blocked writer and the telephone girl. Unfortunately the story is weighted down by tiresome characters like the musical dentist, the two cops, the gangsters. The Just In Time number is lovely; the name-dropping number with the cast jamming the staircase is a treat. As a rule, I say watch anything with Judy Hollyday.
