Robert Downey Jr. in “Oppenheimer” had it easy this year.
He took the early lead in Gold Derby’s official Oscar odds for Best Supporting Actor. He widened that lead in the following months. He then swept the precursor awards. And despite landing in a powerhouse lineup that included Sterling K. Brown in “American Fiction,” Robert De Niro in “Killers of the Flower Moon,” Ryan Gosling in “Barbie” and Mark Ruffalo in “Poor Things,” there was a “near zero” chance of Downey not being called to the stage to accept the Academy Award.
But not every past recipient of the Best Supporting Actor Oscar has cruised to victory like Downey. There have been numerous nail-biters over the years.
I recall one contest in particular from three decades ago. The 1993 fabulous five included first-time nominee Leonardo DiCaprio as the autistic younger brother of Johnny Depp in “What’s Eating Gilbert Grape,” Ralph Fiennes...

Skeletons in the Closet is the latest film from director Asif Akbar. After sitting through several abysmal films he’s directed, most recently Clown Motel as well as an even larger pile of duds he was a producer on, I knew enough not to have high expectations. Even that wasn’t enough preparation for what I was about to endure.
Mark and Valentina are dealing with financial problems. Those problems are about to get a lot worse, as instead of the raise he was expecting, Mark gets a pink slip. As if that wasn’t enough bad news, their daughter Jenny’s has brain cancer and the doctors are willing to let her die unless Mark and Valentina can come...

The latest work from Hungarian directors Gergö Elekes and József Gallai, a voiceover opens Aftermath to establish this world where humanity is on the verge of an important change. A subsequent interview may reveal that more tests are needed, yet it remains clear that humanity is close to a vital medical discovery.
The next scene introduces a distressed Kate (Fruzsina Nagy), who leaves her home with no intention of returning. Upon receiving a call from her irate boss, her frustrations are shared through expository dialogue regarding how she is the only employee who has consistently worked on a major project. In a moment that feels glaringly artificial, Kate takes her eye off the road and is in an accident.

Just when you think you’ve seen every 1980s slasher flick, Vinegar Syndrome humbles you by unearthing yet another low-budget horror film lost in time and space, this time with 1984’s Fatal Games (originally titled The Killing Touch).
Fatal Games is the story of Olympic-hopeful medalists being systematically picked off one-by-one at the Falcon Academy, the main setting for the film’s events. Each time one of the characters has been nixed, the killer scratches out their likeness from a group photo containing the academy’s pool of victims.
If you think this sounds similar to 1981’s Graduation Day, you would be on the right track. Director Michael Elliot, who also stars in his film as Dr. Jordine, builds onto the foundation of Graduation Day to create his own ’80s horror film. In between the killings, we are treated to some detailed character development storylines including the trials and tribulations of being a young athlete,...

It took nearly 20 years to make "The Conjuring," a "based on a true story" film about the supposed hauntings of the Perron family in Harrisville, Rhode Island. For over 14 years, producer Tony DeRosa-Grund went from studio to studio trying to make the film happen, but it wasn't until writers Chad and Carey W. Hayes updated the script and shifted the perspective from the Perron family to paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren that there was movement on the picture. The duo interviewed Lorraine Warren to ensure authenticity, and the new script sparked a massive bidding war. The Hayes brothers had cracked the code — the secret of what would become a massive franchise lay with the Warrens.

"They're not driving me out of my own mine!" Film Hub has revealed an official trailer for an indie horror film titled The Haunting of Hell Hole Mine, arriving to watch later in May. This one is being released direct-to-vod for anyone interested. It's one of the final roles from actor Tom Sizemore, who passed away earlier this year. To rescue his niece from insanity, Luke must confront the dark spirit trapped in their ancestral gold mine. The late Tom Sizemore and Tom Lister Jr. star alongside the Oscar nominee Sally Kirkland in the highly anticipated release of this thrilling supernatural western. Rudy Youngblood, May Myot Noe, and David Fennoy also co-star in this unique genre mash-up in the tradition of Cabin in the Woods and Get Out. This looks absolutely awful, but hey maybe some folks will have fun with it. Not much else worth watching here. // Continue Reading...

The most fun moments of watching the Oscars are always the surprises.
The unexpected wins from dark horses are always so much more thrilling than predictable outcomes.
It's not that the winners were undeserving -- it's often that their wins seemed to come out of nowhere.
With prognosticators having Oscar predictions down to a science, anything remotely surprising is a rare treat.
Here are some of the most shocking wins that left us with our jaws on the floor!
Adrien Brody (Best Actor In A Leading Role) in The Pianist
Brody was the only Oscar-less member of his cohort when he won for his role as Holocaust survivor Władysław Szpilman.
Up against Jack Nicholson, Nicolas Cage, Michael Caine, and Daniel Day-Lewis, Brody's win made him the youngest Best Actor in the history of the Oscars, at age 29.
Unfortunately, his behavior is what most people remember about his win -- when...

In the Six Degrees of Separation between Gwyneth Paltrow and Andrea Riseborough, the dotted line isn’t so clear. So what the hell is going on with the Best Actress Oscar campaign for Riseborough’s indie “To Leslie,” and why are celebrities from Paltrow to Kate Winslet, Amy Adams, Cate Blanchett, Courteney Cox, Demi Moore, Mia Farrow, Joe Mantegna, Mira Sorvino, Charlize Theron, Sarah Paulson, Edward Norton, Jennifer Aniston, and Jane Fonda suddenly backing it?
During a recent Q&a with Riseborough that Winslet herself moderated, the fellow actress called Riseborough’s turn in the film directed by Michael Morris “one of the greatest performances I have ever seen in my life.”
Paltrow called the film a “masterpiece” and said she was “stunned” by Riseborough, whom she said deserves “to win every award there is and all the ones that haven’t been invented yet.” While onstage accepting her Critics...

Uncork’d Entertainment has acquired director James Cullen Bressack’s well-received horror-comedy, “Murder, Anyone?” based on the play of the same name by Bressack’s father, Emmy-award winner Gordon Bressack.
The film will be released in early 2023.
“Murder, Anyone?” explores the concept of manifestation, and stars Kristos Andrews (“The Bay”), Galadriel Stineman (“The Middle”), Maurice Lamarche (“Pinky and the Brain”), Spencer Breslin, and Oscar nominee Sally Kirkland.
The story follows playwrights George and Charlie, tasked with the challenge of creating the next “avant-garde, surrealistic, mind-bending neo-noire thriller.” Unfortunately, as they write, the story comes to life in real time — but their own emotions and arguments also begin to manifest on film, creating sharp twists and turns and filling their life with hilarity — and chaos.

Nearly 100 SAG-AFTRA members rallied peacefully but boisterously Thursday outside the union’s Los Angeles headquarters to protest the industry’s Covid-19 vaccination mandate.
Chanting “Stop the shot” and “This is insanity,” they carried signs that read “My body, my choice,” “End the mandates now” and “The only shot I’m taking is Jack Daniel’s.” A guy with a bullhorn shouted, “Coercion is not consent,” and that accepting the mandate “is the beginning of socialism.”
Cha Cha Sandoval-McMahon, a stuntwoman and actress who organized the protest, called it “a pretty good turnout” for only two days of networking.
The film and TV industry’s Covid-19 safety protocols, which include a narrowly defined “Mandatory Vaccination” provision, are set to expire Saturday but could be extended, as they have been several times since the protocols were first issued in September 2020. Here’s our exclusive first look at the poster for award-winning filmmaker Michael S. Rodriguez’s new horror movie Film Fiend, which stars Oscar nominee & Golden Globe winner Sally Kirkland (Anna), Felissa Rose (Sleepaway Camp), Dawna Lee Heising (Bad President) and Vida Ghaffari (The Mindy Project).
In the film, Gary Augustyn begins to blur reality with his twisted love of classic horror films and obsession for the late-night horror personality Dara. He begins to stalk her and slowly drags her into his sick web of madness for a deadly game of cat and mouse.
Sparkle Soojian, Erik Anthony Russo, Drew Eash and Debra Dutch round out the cast; and Lee Turner (After Hours Cinema) wrote the script, with Joseph Kelbie Williamson set to produce in conjunction with Rodriguez.

Exclusive: Udo Kier (Downsizing), Oscar nominee Sally Kirkland (Anna) and Louis Mandylor (The Mercenary) have joined Terrence Dashon Howard, Cuba Gooding Jr, Clifton Powell and Valery M. Ortiz in horror-thriller Skeletons In The Closet, which is currently in production in the U.S.
A few days after the movie began last month the project changed director from Lance Kawas to Asif Akbar. The production tells us this was down to creative differences. In Skeletons In The Closet, haunted by a malevolent spirit since childhood, a desperate mother allows herself to become possessed in order to save the life of her terminally ill daughter. Script is by Koji Steven Sakai and Joshua A. Cohen. The original story comes from Al Bravo. Producers are Bravo, Asif Akbar, Sakai, Colin Bates, Stan Erdreich and Monica R. Cooper. The project reunites Oscar nominee Howard and Oscar winner Cuba Gooding Jr after they starred in Lee Daniels’ The Butler.

In director James Cullen Bressack’s upcoming film, “Murder, Anyone?”, two playwrights named George and Charlie, are tasked with the challenge of creating the next “avant-garde, surrealistic, mind-bending neo-noire thriller.”
Unfortunately, as they write, the story comes to life in real time. However, their own emotions and arguments also begin to manifest on film, creating sharp twists and turns and filling their life with hilarity — and chaos. And below, you can get a hint of what that’s like courtesy of some exclusive-to-TheWrap images.
The comedic play-within-a-play-within-a-movie, which per Bressack contemplates “the complexities of language, art, theater, film and more” is also especially personal for him. It’s based on the play written by his father, Emmy award-winning “Pinky and the Brain” writer Gordon Bressack, who died in 2019.
“I self financed and made the film in honor of my father’s memory so his words could live on,” Bressack said.

James Cullen Bressack (“Fortress”) is adapting the play “Murder, Anyone?” into a feature film, Variety can exclusively reveal.
“Muder, Anyone?” was originally written by Bressack’s father, Emmy Award-winning “Pinky and the Brain” writer Gordon Bressack. The play first premiered at the White Fire Theatre in Los Angeles in 2017.
Gordon Bressack, who worked on dozens of beloved animated shows including “Animaniacs” and “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles,” died in 2019.
Now his son will direct and produce a feature film adaptation, in part to “bring attention to his work,” Bressack tells Variety.
Spencer Breslin (“The Happening”) and Kristos Andrews (“The Bay”) are set to star in the film, a faithful adaptation of Bressack Sr.’s show about two playwrights tasked with creating a new “avant-garde, surrealistic, mind-bending neo-noire thriller” who find their story coming to life as they write.
Breslin and Andrews are joined by Galadriel Stineman (“The Is Us”), Maurice Lamarche (“Animaniacs”), Charles M.

The next Supporting Actress Smackdown will focus on the contenders of 1987. Before that celebration of great acting at the margins, we'll be exploring the cinematic year, its glorious pictures, and memorable Oscar races. Speaking of which, one can't discuss 1987 in the context of awards, without mentioning and paying respect to one of the ballsiest campaigns ever made by an actress. Through her sheer will, impressive determination, and tireless ambition, Sally Kirkland managed to conquer a Best Actress Oscar nomination for Anna, a little-seen American indie about an aging performer.
First things first, before we delve into Kirkland's pursuit of little golden men, we should appreciate the work for which she was recognized. The movie is discussed nowadays to snicker at the thirsty campaign, but it's a masterclass of acting...

HBO Max has given a script-to-series order to an adaptation of the classic children’s novel “The Westing Game,” the streamer announced Wednesday.
No writer or director is attached to the project, but HBO Max, along with producers MGM Television and Julie Corman, is “currently interviewing” candidates.
First published in 1978, Ellen Raskin’s “The Westing Game” is described as an “ensemble mystery-comedy” surrounding the death of millionaire Samuel Westing. The reading of Westing’s will sets in motion a game for his sixteen heirs unlike any other, the winners of which will walk away with his $200 million fortune.
The novel won the John Newbury Award for children’s literature in 1979 and was ranked number one on the list of the top 100 children’s novels of all time by School Library Journal in 2012.
“The Westing Game” previously received the screen-adaptation treatment with a 1997 made-for-tv movie starring Ashley Peldon, Diane Ladd, Sally Kirkland...

They say good things come to those who wait. We might be able to slot actress Mary Kay Place in that description, thanks to some surprising awards season attention from the Los Angeles Film Critics Association for her heartfelt performance in “Diane” as a deeply caring retired widow who can’t forgive herself for her past choices no matter how many casseroles she takes to those less fortunate than her.
The wintry working-class drama, a throwback to a time when cinema celebrated relatable yet flawed characters, premiered at the 2018 Tribeca Film Festival — where it won three honors including Best Narrative Feature. Distributed by IFC, it opened without much fanfare in late March while managing to achieve a 93% positive score on Rotten Tomatoes. “Diane” is currently available for viewing on Hulu.
Perhaps most surprising for those who can recall Place’s breakout Emmy-winning role as country singer Loretta Haggers in Norman Lear...

If this weekend you’re only seeing one depressing character study about an unemployable, fatherless, antisocial manchild who lives with his sickly mother, is often unattractively shirtless, and eventually decides society must pay violently for his general misery … then you are almost certainly going to “Joker.” As it happens, however, there is an alternative also fitting that description perfectly well. “Cuck” is, in fact, “Joker” with even less vestige of superheroics than Todd Phillips’ atypical comic-book movie, about precisely the sort of people some have feared will take “Joker” as an incitement to real-world violence: the usually white incel-type man who feels marginalized and somehow robbed of success, who in worst-case scenarios ends up shooting up a school, workplace or other public space to feel his rage isn’t entirely impotent.
It’s certainly worth having more than one film wade into this terrain, particularly since “Joker” allegedly goes out...

"When the fire comes, you're gunna burn." Gravitas has debuted an official trailer for an indie film titled Cuck, an intriguing take on an issue in American society today. When a frustrated loner gains popularity as an Alt-Right vlogger, the online echo chamber he finds solace in turns his insecurities into a deadly rage. The term "cuck" (while also a sexual kink term) in this case means a man who is desperate for acceptance, approval, and affection from women. Zachary Ray Sherman stars, with a cast including Sally Kirkland, Timothy V. Murphy, Monique Parent, and David Diaan. It's obvious that this is trying to comment on this online echo chamber / self-righteous rage culture, but seems to be trying a bit too hard to make a point. Here's the first official trailer (+ poster) for Rob Lambert's Cuck, direct from the film's YouTube: When a frustrated loner named Ronnie (Zachary...

Exclusive: Red Arrow Studios-owned Gravitas Ventures has picked up North American rights to alt-right drama Cuck, starring Zachary Ray Sherman (Everything Sucks!), Timothy V. Murphy (True Detective) and Sally Kirkland (Anna).
Sherman stars as a man living with his mother in a run-down section of Van Nuys, California. Unstable and isolated, he binges on alt-right vlogs and creates his own video channel on the downfall of ‘real America’ with dangerous consequences.
The Rimrock Pictures production directed by Rob Lambert in his directorial debut is co-written and co-produced by Lambert and Joe Varkle.
Nick Royak, manager of acquisitions, from Gravitas negotiated the deal with executive producer Salomé Breziner on behalf of the filmmakers. The feature is due for a limited theatrical run and an on-demand release from October 4, 2019.
“Cuck is a character study on both a person and a uniquely American virus. There are dark, destructive elements in our society that need to be examined.

“Avengers: Endgame” might have surpassed 2009’s “Avatar” when it comes to its domestic box-office — besting James Cameron’s sci-fi fantasy’s $750 million handily by taking in $816 million since its opening on April 26. But it is still a far cry from 2015’s “Star Wars: The Force Awakens,” still the champ with $937 million in domestic ticket sales.

As the Rascal Flatts would croon, “what hurts the most was being so close.” And Glenn Close was closer than ever to her first Oscar this year with “The Wife,” but alas, she fell short once again, losing to Olivia Colman (“The Favourite”) and is now the most nominated actress without a win. But which of her unlucky seven losses hurts the most?
Close’s film career started fast right out of the gate with “The World According to Garp” (1982), taking Best Supporting Actress at the Los Angeles Film Critics Association and the National Board of Review, with runner-up mentions at the New York Film Critics Circle and the National Society of Film Critics. She became one of the few stars to earn an Oscar nomination for their screen debut. At 35, Close, who up until then worked in theater, was at the perfect age for one of those “hot new discovery” wins that Oscar likes.
Close’s film career started fast right out of the gate with “The World According to Garp” (1982), taking Best Supporting Actress at the Los Angeles Film Critics Association and the National Board of Review, with runner-up mentions at the New York Film Critics Circle and the National Society of Film Critics. It was a year of belly laughs, guffaws and giggles at the multiplex in 2018 as movies like “Incredibles 2,” “Deadpool 2” and “Crazy Rich Asians” proved that comedies are no joke at the box office, where they raked in more than $1 billion in North America.
That trio also delivered three of the most amusing scenes of the year, while several industry members also chose scenes from “Can You Ever Forgive Me,” “The Favourite,” “Game Night,” “Ralph Breaks the Internet,” “A Simple Favor,” “Death of Stalin,” “A Simple Favor” and “Blockers” for this informal survey.
Participants include Sally Kirkland, nominated for a Best Actress Academy Award for “Anna”; Carl Kurlander, who wrote “St. Elmo’s Fire”; Adele Lim, co-writer of the “Crazy Rich Asians” script; actress Stephanie Erb, whose credits include “Ray Donovan”; “Sully” screenwriter and “Elf” producer Todd Komarnicki; producer Jude S. A column chronicling conversations and events on the awards circuit.
Julia Roberts is back in the awards conversation this season, not only with her latest film, Ben Is Back, which has been winning her some of the best reviews of her career, but also her Amazon series Homecoming, which got a two-season initial order and has racked up Lead Actress nominations right out of the gate for her at the Golden Globes and Critics’ Choice Awards after just a 10-episode first season.
I caught up with her Thursday night at CAA for an interview set to run on Deadline next week. We talked as a full house, largely Academy members, watched Ben Is Back. She’s justifiably proud of the movie, which just began its limited runs last week and will expand through Roadside Attractions to the top 25 markets next week as it continues to widen during the season. Glenn Close is attempting to win her first Oscar with “The Wife,” but she could also celebrate a first at the Golden Globe and Screen Actors Guild Awards. If she prevails at both ceremonies, it’d be her first Globe and SAG for film.
Close has two Golden Globes and one SAG, but they were all for her television work. She took home both awards for her performance as Eleanor of Aquitaine in the 2004 TV movie “The Lion in Winter” and nabbed a Best TV Drama Actress Globe for the first season of “Damages” in 2008.
See Glenn Close (‘The Wife’) would be the third oldest Best Actress Oscar winner
The actress’ six Oscar nominations don’t have great correlation with either the Globes or the SAGs. Her first five Oscar nominations came during her breakthrough in the ’80s: Best Supporting Actress for “The World According to Garp” (1982), “The Big Chill...
