Before AI started growing as a concern in the entertainment industry in many aspects, there was and still is a struggle with the way streamers promote works to certain viewers, with their algorithms spotlighting some content while leaving others in the dark. The technology is in almost every facet of the internet to customize exposure and availability to consumers. Studios seemingly make creative decisions based on what is trending or what spikes in activity. However, rarely do you hear of movie pitches getting turned down due to the unfavorable results of an algorithm.
That’s exactly what director Brian Helgeland claims happened with Netflix after he was pitching to them an idea to do a sequel to his 2001 period film A Knight’s Tale. Brian Helgeland's 2001 film "A Knight's Tale" is based on the first of the Canterbury Tales by Geoffrey Chaucer, but it has as much to do with 14th-century medieval literature as "Wayne's World." The film features characters singing Queen songs and one of the characters invents the Nike "swoop" as a brand for her armor. The story involves William Thatcher (Heath Ledger) a handsome young cove who aims to win jousting tournaments and be welcomed as one of the king's knights. It's a raucous, lightweight, silly movie that is deeply beloved by a very specific age group, that is: those who were between 15 and 17 in May of 2001.
It also depicted Ledger at the height of his heartthrob powers, as well as Paul Bettany (as Chaucer), Rufus Sewell as the villain, Shannyn Sossamon as Ledger's would-be paramour, and a trio of brilliant comedian sidekicks in Mark Addy, Laura Fraser, and Alan Tudyk.

'A Knight's Tale' sequel was scrapped by the Netflix algorithm, according to director Brian Helgeland. The 63-year-old filmmaker has been keen to shoot a follow-up to his 2001 medieval comedy classic - which starred Heath Ledger, Paul Bettany and Alan Tudyk - but despite the original movie's enduring popularity, the streaming platform has decided against it.He told Inverse magazine: "I pitched it to Sony because they own the rights, and it seemed like they were interested in making it with Netflix, releasing it as a Netflix movie.“My understanding is that Netflix tested this sequel idea through their algorithms, which indicated that it would not be successful."‘A Knight’s Tale’ seems to get more popular with every passing year; it’s the strangest thing.”Helgeland and the team already had big plans for a sequel almost 20 years ago when they finished work on the original movie. He recalled:...

“A Knight’s Tale” director Brian Helgeland revealed in a career retrospective interview with Inverse that his efforts to make a sequel to his 2001 medieval action-comedy classic were apparently thwarted by the Netflix algorithm.
“When we finished ‘A Knight’s Tale,’ we were already thinking about making the sequel as a pirate film,” Helgeland said. “The plot revolved around Count Adhemar (Rufus Sewell) kidnapping Jocelyn (Shannyn Sossamon) and taking her to Constantinople. They end up as galley slaves after their boat is captured by pirates. There’s a prisoner on the boat who has a treasure map tattooed on his back, but he keeps getting flogged for indiscipline. The guys volunteer to take turns getting flogged in this prisoner’s place, so the map isn’t erased. Sony didn’t want to do it.”

A potential sequel to “A Knight’s Tale,” the 2001 period comedy that starred the late Heath Ledger as an aspiring knight, was killed by the Netflix algorithm, according to director Brian Helgeland.

From Saving Private Ryan, through There's Something About Mary and onto A Bug's Life, 1998 saw critically acclaimed films in a variety of genres. The highest grossing film of the year was the Bruce Willis sci-fi disaster movie Armageddon, which grossed $553.7 million.
Despite its box office success, Armageddon scores only 43% on the Tomatometer. Another sci-fi film released in the same year scores 76% and has an audience score of 85%.
This Kiefer Sutherland film has a critics' score of 76% and an audience score of 85%. However, it only grossed $27.2 million against a production budget of $27 million and has been largely forgotten.

Heracles, or Hercules in the Roman interpretation, is probably one of the most recognizable figures of ancient mythology. In fact, along with the Mesopotamian Gilgamesh, the stories associated with Hercules are among the oldest representatives of adventure fiction that still have a significant impact on pop culture.
But obviously, given the mythical nature of the life of the famous ancient Greek hero, many movies and shows about Heracles were set in the fantasy genre and therefore did not care too much about historicity. But is this really the case, or did some filmmakers still try to convey period-accurate aspects?
Renowned Dutch historian Dr. Roel Konijnendijk, who specializes in classical Greek warfare, has evaluated a number of battles in films about antiquity, and one of them was 2014's Hercules, in which Dwayne Johnson took on the titular role. The film was rather coldly received by critics, but Konijnendijk gave it a much warmer reception,...

Rufus Sewell’s butt made headlines earlier this year when it was inaccurately reported that he wore a prosthetic butt to play Prince Andrew in Netflix’s “Scoop,” the juicy dramatization of his disastrous interview regarding a friendship with Jeffrey Epstein.
“There’s an account of him wearing bum prosthetics and body prosthetics, but he was literally joking to another journalist,” “Scoop” prosthetic makeup designer Kristyan Mallett told IndieWire. “That is a body double [when you see him naked from behind]. I’m sure loads of people would love to stick on Rufus bum prosthetics, but I didn’t get the luxury this time. Maybe next time.”
But despite the absence of a prosthetic posterior, Mallett and hair and makeup designer Kirstin Chalmers had their hands full. “The two faces are very, very different,” Chalmers told IndieWire. “Andrew’s is very long and Rufus is very chiseled and almost like a diamond shape. Rufus has a very amazing chin,...

Scoop, the Netflix film chronicling Prince Andrew’s humbling interview on the BBC, has enjoyed a relatively regal reception from British audiences.
Based on a book of the same name by Sam McAlister, the woman who played a central role in securing access to the Duke of York, the feature was watched by 2.75M viewers in its first seven days.
The rating is healthy for Netflix, putting Scoop ahead of other recently launched titles, not least the eye-wateringly expensive 3 Body Problem, which premiered with 1.7M viewers.
Scoop could not quite match fellow royal drama The Crown, however. The Left Bank show’s final season debuted with 2.8M last year, according to official Barb figures supplied by overnights.tv.

It seems April 2024 isn’t off to a good start for Princess Beatrice ever since Netflix’s Scoop premiered. The 35-year-old British royal is portrayed—very briefly—in the film about her father, Prince Andrew’s 2019 Newsnight interview regarding his friendship with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. According to an expert, Beatrice is likely “annoyed and upset” she’s depicted in the film.
Beatrice will be ‘dreading’ the ‘difficult time ahead’ amid her portrayal in ‘Scoop’
Scoop debuted on April 5, 2024. With it came a depiction of Beatrice as her father, Andrew, played by Rufus Sewell, and his team negotiated with BBC Newsnight’s Sam McAlister (Billie Piper) and Emily Maitlis (Gillian Anderson).
The interview aired in November 2019. It resulted in Andrew losing his Hrh [His Royal Highness] status and being removed from the list of working royals.
Charity Wakefield plays Beatrice in Scoop, who’s seen in one scene attending a Buckingham Palace meeting.

Gillian Anderson is once again playing a character with British royal family ties in Netflix’s Scoop. (She played Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher in The Crown.) Plot: An insider account of how the women of “Newsnight” secured Prince Andrew’s infamous 2019 interview about his friendship with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.
Review: Sometimes, pursuing a news story is as fascinating as the story itself. From All The President’s Men to Spotlight, countless films have looked at the reporters and journalists who have investigated the most significant revelations of all time and have garnered awards for the recreation of the tireless journey. The distance between the event and the dramatization often reminds audiences of the stakes at play, but Scoop chronicles a news story that occurred just six years ago. Led by Billie Piper as the producer who secured the shocking interview alongside Gillian Anderson, Romola Garai, Keeley Hawes, and Rufus Sewell as Prince Andrew, Scoop has some exciting stories from an insider’s point of view. Still, it fails to generate anything we did not already get from the broadcast itself.

Netflix doesn’t at all try to hold back from making fun of Prince Andrew in their latest film, Scoop. The Philip Martin-directed film is based on former BBC editor Sam McAlister’s book about securing one of the most sensational interviews of Prince Andrew in the history of the BBC. The context is rather grave, as the interview was focused on the grim subject of Andrew’s friendship with the late Jeffrey Epstein, a convicted sex offender. Billie Piper is electrifying as McAlister, and so is Gillian Anderson, who plays Emily Maitlis, the famous British journalist who took the interview. But it is Rufus Sewell who delivers the standout performance as the controversial Prince. However, the film still falls quite flat, as, at the end of the day, it doesn’t really offer anything substantial to the viewers. Despite all the brilliant performances, Scoop remains just another Netflix...

When the 2019 Newsnight interview finally blew up the time bomb that was Prince Andrew’s friendship with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, not all of the pieces came back down to Earth in the same place. The interview that the Duke of York’s team were hoping would charm the public and rid him of his “Randy Andy” reputation achieved the opposite. Viewers found Prince Andrew to be callous and unsympathetic, while his denials of wrongdoing failed to convince many.
What followed were legal proceedings, a substantial out-of-court settlement, and a great many job resignations. From the prince to his team and the journalists behind the interview, here’s where the major players as featured in Netflix’s Scoop were left.

Boy, he’d love to have been in the room when that interview was filmed. Sam McAlister looks wistfully at the screen with the beginning of a smile on her face. “Yeah I did. I saw it,” she tells him, and then turns and leaves.
So humble. So real. So unmotivated by personal glory. Sam McAlister could have told the kebab shop man that she very much was in the room when that interview was filmed, and that as the guest booker on Newsnight, without her it might never even have happened. She doesn’t. The former...

Dev Patel’s feature directorial debut Monkey Man leads the new films at this weekend’s UK-Ireland box office, starting in 592 cinemas through Universal.
Directed, produced, from a story by and starring Patel, Monkey Man follows an anonymous young man who unleashes a campaign of violence against the corrupt leaders who murdered his mother, and continue to systematically victimise the poor and powerless.
Filmed in early 2021, Netflix originally bought worldwide rights to Monkey Man. After Jordan Peele boarded the title as producer through his Monkeypaw Productions, Universal acquired it from Netflix earlier this year. It debuted at SXSW last month.

“An hour of television can change everything,” Billie Piper says in the newly released trailer for Scoop, the upcoming film based on the true events leading up to Prince Andrew’s explosive 2019 BBC Newsnight interview. The eyes of Britain were on journalist Emily Maitlis (played here by Gillian Anderson) as she grilled the royal (Rufus Sewell) about his relationship with Jeffrey Epstein. The fallout was immediate, as Prince Andrew announced that he was stepping back from his public duties in the days following the broadcast.
But how did a son of the Queen of England find himself in the hot seat? In Scoop, directed by Emmy and BAFTA winner Philip Martin (The Crown), Piper plays Sam McAlister, the interview booker for the prestigious current affairs show who managed to secure what was thought to be an ungettable get. Based on McAlister’s own account and adapted by Peter Moffat and...

A bizarre sense of déjà vu accompanies Netflix's Scoop, a behind-the-scenes look at Prince Andrew's "car crash" interview about his relationship with Jeffrey Epstein. Director Philip Martin and writer Peter Moffat painstakingly recreate the infamous BBC Newsnight interview, loading up Rufus Sewell with prosthetics to make him look more like the Prince and nudging Gillian Anderson, as journalist Emily Maitlis, toward the right mix of shock and delight that Andrew has made her job so easy.
As reproductions go, the tense sit-down between Andrew and Emily — the result of months of negotiation between talent booker Sam McAlister (Billie Piper) and the Duke of York's private secretary Amanda Thirsk (Keeley Hawes) — remains incredibly faithful to the 2019 broadcast, which led to Andrew's downfall and withdrawal from public duties.

Exclusive: Netflix’s dramatization of the BBC’s bombshell Prince Andrew interview is proving to be one of the streamer’s most discussed debuts in some time, but one person has largely kept her silence.
Emily Maitlis was sat opposite the Duke of York for that fateful exchange in 2019, winning plaudits and prizes for her piercing, methodical questioning of the British royal.
Maitlis has not said much about Scoop, partly because she has not been involved in the Netflix film, but also because her time has been spent authoring her own version of the story for Amazon.
Now, in an interview with Deadline, Maitlis has made some of her first comments about Netflix’s adaptation of a book by her former Newsnight running mate Sam McAlister.
“I’ve left them very much to do their own thing because I think the last thing they want is me peeking around the edges offering my [views],” Maitlis said.

Rufus Sewell was determined to portray Prince Andrew "fairly" in 'Scoop'.The 56-year-old actor plays the scandal-hit Duke of York in the Netflix movie about his 'Newsnight' interview regarding his connection to the convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein and set out to give a balanced depiction of the royal.Speaking to the Metro newspaper, Rufus said: "It was resisting the temptation to slant one way or another."In the middle of it is a human being and humans are a strange mixture. People who do good things can be unpleasant, people who are nice can be evil, people who do terrible things can do good things. And people who do great things can occasionally do bad. It's mixed up."(I endeavoured to) put everything, as I saw it, in there, including uncomfortable levels of positivity as well as negativity."Andrew's disastrous 2019 interview with Emily Maitlis is a familiar...

Scoop is a 2024 Netflix movie starring Gillian Anderson, Billie Piper, Rufus Sewell and Keeley Hawes. It is directed by Philip Martin and written by Peter Moffat.
Are you a fan of journalism? The film might not be an exact representation, it could all be a little romanticized, and perhaps more Hollywood than realistic. However, if you’re fascinated by the world of journalism, “Scoop” knows how to maintain a great cinematic pace and weave a story that captivates and thrills.
Yes, it’s idealized, but it’s also passionate and well-told.
Scoop Plot
Jeffrey Epstein was accused in New York of child prostitution. Epstein committed suicide in prison, but his story didn’t end there. Across the Atlantic, the scandal touched the British Crown and one its highest representatives: Prince Andrew.

Scoop is a dramatized feature about the BBC’s Newsnight team scoring a sensationally revealing 2019 interview with Prince Andrew about his relationship with millionaire sex trafficker Jeffrey Epstein. For a film about a journalistic exclusive, it has the most generic title possible. There are already at least four other movies out there called Scoop, including a rubbishy 2006 Woody Allen film and a 1987 adaptation of Evelyn Waugh’s peerless 1938 satirical novel, a twofer satire of both the press and the British aristocracy.
Sadly, this latest Scoop has none of Waugh’s acid wit or alkaline intelligence. Although serviceable as a retread of the events that led up to the royal interview conducted by Newsnight anchor Emily Maitlis (impersonated here by Gillian Anderson), an interview recreated for big chunks of the running time, it doesn’t significantly deepen or enrich our understanding of the personalities involved — let alone journalism, privilege, sexual exploitation or the price of fish.

Emily Maitlis’s interview was unmissable limo-crash television, but Gillian Anderson’s Maggie Thatcher-lite performance and an underused Rufus Sewell add little
Here is a laboriously acted and distinctly self-admiring, self-mythologising drama about the media, the royals and the media royals. It is all about Emily Maitlis’s 2019 BBC Newsnight interview with Prince Andrew, challenging him about being friends with sex trafficker and abuser Jeffrey Epstein. The prince’s performance was so grotesquely embarrassing that he had to forgo his royal titles and “step back” from public duties, an achievement much emphasised over the closing credits, but about which audiences may now have mixed feelings, given that he is still, after all, known as Prince Andrew and still unrepentantly prominent on royal occasions.

Jeffrey Epstein is back in the news with the release of the sex trafficker’s private files earlier this year, so it’s good timing that Netflix is releasing its thriller on the exposé. Unfortunately, the would-be prestige drama Scoop feels like all bark and no bite, lacking the insight or audacity to make it a meaningful entry to the genre.
Scoop tells the story of the BBC journalists who obtained the Newsnight interview with Prince Andrew about his relationship with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. Although this story is undeniably interesting, the film’s fundamental flaw is treating it as a nail-biting thriller when the situation’s results are so well-known. Had the movie taken a more satirical, perhaps even farcical, approach, it would have been far more compelling.
The film also struggles to straddle the line between technical and accessible. At some points, it seems like the filmmakers...

On November 16, 2019, the BBC got a “scoop” that just might have saved Britain’s premier network for news. That is the night it aired its seemingly impossible “get” of Hrh Prince Andrew actually sitting down with the BBC’s signature news show, Newsnight, to talk about the raging scandal over his relationship with the notorious Jeffrey Epstein, as well as his alleged sexual encounters with Virginia Roberts. However, the facts of the matter, such as they were, are not at all what the new Netflix film Scoop is all about.
Instead, much like She Said, The Post, Spotlight and All the President’s Men, the emphasis here is on the reporters, four key woman journalists who incredibly negotiated a sit-down interview with Andrew when such a thing would be unthinkable. They pulled it all off just at a time when facts themselves were on trial and the future of legitimate newsgathering...

It makes sense that Netflix leapt at the chance to adapt Sam McAllister’s “Scoops: Behind the Scenes of the BBC’s Most Shocking Interviews,” as the story that screenwriter Peter Moffat has pulled from it feels like nothing so much as an episode from season eight or nine of “The Crown” — the most compelling thing about this film might be the case it makes in support of the streamer’s decision to end that series after season six.
A thin but propulsive journalistic thriller about the making of the November 2019 “Newsnight” segment in which Prince Andrew self-immolated on national television while being grilled about his friendship with Jeffrey Epstein, “Scoop” fleetly dramatizes how a small team at the BBC’s most prestigious current affairs program convinced the Duke of York to hoist himself on the petard of his own alleged sex crimes. "At least I'm trying to be a good person." "Rich people are unreasonable." Parkland Pictures has unveiled the official UK trailer for a dark comedy film called The Trouble with Jessica, arriving in UK cinemas this April. Though there's still no US date yet. Winner of the Jury Prize & Audience Award at Dinard Film Festival 2023. This reminds me of the original Death at a Funeral comedy, and it even also co-stars Alan Tudyk just like that one. Sarah and Tom are in deep financial trouble. Their situation takes a terrifying nosedive with the shocking behavior of uninvited dinner guest, Jessica. Just when they think they can sell their stylish London home to the right buyer, Jessica's rash decision leaves them in even more of a situation than before. The Trouble with Jessica ensemble cast features Shirley Henderson, Alan Tudyk, Rufus Sewell, Olivia Williams, Sylvester Groth, Anne Reid, and Indira Varma as the titular Jessica.

Henderson, Indira Varma, Rufus Sewell and Olivia Williams attend a Hampstead dinner party that takes a dark turn in a play-like sendup that could go harder
There are echoes of Carnage and Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? in this satire of north London liberals. It’s an original script but has the staginess of a filmed play, set almost entirely in one location: a big fancy house in Hampstead where two uber-successful couples in their 50s are chattering over dinner. I wasn’t totally convinced by the dialogue; some of the lines aren’t especially clever or witty given that this is a bunch of highly intelligent over-achievers. Not enough sparks were flying.

A car crash interview with a delusional prince, a new series adaptation featuring Patricia Highsmith’s most infamous creation, the second part of Zack Snyder’s pricey space opera and a paranormal detective show set within Neil Gaiman’s celebrated Sandman universe are among the big titles hitting Netflix in April.
Debuting April 4 is Ripley, Netflix’s glossy new take on Highsmith’s 1955 crime novel The Talented Mr. Ripley. Fresh from the critical acclaim he received for All of Us Strangers, Irish actor Andrew Scott will be inhabiting the role of Tom Ripley in an adaptation that will be screened in black-and-white. The eight-episode series also stars Johnny Flynn as Dickie Greenleaf, Dakota Fanning as Marge Sherwood, and acting newcomer Eliot Sumner (son of Sting and Trudie Styler) as Freddie Miles. Written and directed by Oscar winner Steven Zaillian, Ripley was originally set for release on Showtime before it found a new home on Netflix.
