The Academy picked the right year to give an Honorary Oscar to film editor Carol Littleton. They’re saluting a female editor at a time when three of the year’s major awards contenders —“Killers of the Flower Moon,” “Oppenheimer” and “Maestro” — are edited by Thelma Schoonmaker, Jennifer Lame and Michelle Tesoro, respectively, and when other women in the mix include Hilda Rasula for “American Fiction,” Victoria Boydell for “Saltburn,” Sarah Flack for “Priscilla” and co-editors Claire Simpson (with Sam Restivo) for “Napoleon” and Oona Flaherty (with Nick Moore) for “Are You There, God? It’s Me, Margaret.”
“The Editors Guild has about 2,900 picture editors, and 764 women,” said Littleton, a one-time president of that guild. “That’s about a fourth. So isn’t it interesting that these three big prestigious films, ‘Oppenheimer,’ and ‘Killers of the Flower Moon’ and ‘Maestro,’ are edited by women?”

Writer-director Sofia Coppola adapts Priscilla Presley’s autobiography “Elvis and Me” for her A24 film “Priscilla,” starring Cailee Spaeny as the American icon alongside Jacob Elordi as Elvis.
“Priscilla” follows the eponymous heroine from meeting Elvis as a teenager to eventually leaving him and Graceland behind. The film marks Coppola’s third feature with A24 following “On the Rocks” and “The Bling Ring.” Coppola reunites with collaborators like cinematographer Philippe Le Sourd, costume designer Stacey Battat, editor Sarah Flack, and production designer Tamara Deverell for the period piece. The film charts 14 years in Priscilla’s life, starting at age 14 when she met 24-year-old Elvis.
The film premiered at the Venice Film Festival, where Spaeny won the Volpi Cup for Best Actress, and is set to screen as the Centerpiece feature at the New York Film Festival.
Director Coppola has opened up about how she could relate to Priscilla’s coming-of-age in the public eye.

When it comes to predicting the Oscar winner for Best Film Editing, you can’t go wrong by looking for the movie with the most cuts. Past winners “The Bourne Ultimatum” (2008), “Mad Max: Fury Road” (2016), “Ford v Ferrari” (2020), “Dune” (2022) and last year’s champ “Everything Everywhere All at Once” included high-octane action sequences with frenetic cutting. A slew of winners — including “Saving Private Ryan” in 1999, “Black Hawk Down” (2002), “The Hurt Locker” (2010), “Hacksaw Ridge” (2017) and “Dunkirk” (2018) — have been war pictures. (Scroll down for the most up-to-date 2024 Oscar predictions for Best Film Editing.)

Based on Priscilla’s 1985 memoir “Elvis and Me” (cowritten with Sandra Harmon), “Priscilla” follows the eponymous businesswoman’s life as a teenage army brat in West Germany, her whirlwind courtship with Elvis and her ultimate arrival at Graceland, the palatial estate where she was queen to the King of Rock ’n’ Roll. Sofia Coppola is focusing on a 20th-century American princess for her first feature since 2020’s “On the Rocks”: Priscilla Presley.
After helming 2006 film “Marie Antoinette,” Coppola takes on adapting Priscilla’s 1985 memoir “Elvis and Me.” The film, titled “Priscilla,” stars “Mare of Easttown” actress Cailee Spaeny as Priscilla and “Euphoria” breakout Jacob Elordi as Elvis Presley.
Per a Deadline source, Spaeny was Coppola’s first choice to portray Priscilla, while “Euphoria” star Elordi auditioned for the role of Elvis. Coppola writes, directs, and produces “Priscilla,” which spans 12 years. Spaeny portrays Priscilla across ages 15 to 27.
Frequent Coppola collaborators cinematographer Philippe Le Sourd, costume designer Stacey Battat, editor Sarah Flack, and production designer Tamara Deverell also signed on to the A24 period piece.
Coppola’s indie “Priscilla” comes on the heels of Baz Luhrmann’s Oscar-nominated “Elvis” epic with Austin Butler as the King of Rock ‘n Roll and Olivia DeJonge as Priscilla.

Cailee Spaeny transforms into Priscilla Presley in Sofia Coppola’s Priscilla. The first trailer shows Spaeny as Priscilla meeting Elvis Presley and falling madly in love. Jacob Elordi takes on the role of Elvis.
Baz Luhrmann’s 2022 critically acclaimed Elvis brought the couple’s story to life on the screen with Austin Butler and Olivia DeJonge. Elvis, obviously, focused on the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll, while Coppola’s Priscilla tells the story of Elvis’s first love.
The film is based on Priscilla Presley’s 1985 memoir Elvis and Me, with Sofia Coppola adapting the book and directing. Dagmara Dominczyk (Succession) also stars, and Coppola, Lorenzo Mieli, and Youree Henley serve as producers.
Coppola’s behind-the-scenes team includes director of photography Philippe Le Sourd, production designer Tamara Deverell, editor Sarah Flack, costume designer Stacey Battat, and music supervisor Randall Poster. The film’s score is by Phoenix.
A24’s targeting an October 2023 theatrical release.

A24 has released the first trailer for Sofia Coppola’s “Priscilla.”
Based on Priscilla Presley’s 1985 memoir “Elvis and Me,” the biographical film follows her life and relationship with the King of Rock ‘n Roll. Cailee Spaeny stars as Priscilla, with Jacob Elordi as Elvis Presley.
Spaeny and Elordi are the latest stars to play Priscilla and Elvis Presley on screen. Olivia DeJonge and Austin Butler played the lead roles in Baz Luhrmann’s 2022 biographical music drama “Elvis,” which scored two Golden Globe nominations and one win for Butler’s performance as the iconic singer. The film went on to earn Oscar nominations for best picture, best actor and more.
“Priscilla” marks Coppola’s third collaboration with A24, following 2020’s “On the Rocks” and 2013’s “The Bling Ring.” A series adaptation of Edith Wharton’s “The Custom of the Country” is also in development between A24 and Coppola.

It’d take approximately zero effort to supersede Baz Luhrmann’s dreadful Elvis but it’s nice that Sofia Coppola, of all people, chose to train her lens on the King. But from an aslant angle, obviously: she’s adapted Priscilla Presley’s tell-all memoir Elvis and Me, which showed the man at some of his most-complicated and least-palatable––drugs, infidelity, insecurity, which is to say a human contra the cartoon Luhrmann found more compelling.
A brief-even-by-teaser-standards teaser, cut to Spectrum’s “How You Satisfy Me,” has arrived before Priscilla‘s October release, giving first look at Cailee Spaeny and Jacob Elordi as (of course) Priscilla and Elvis, respectively. Sure, “Marie Antoinette” and “Priscilla” are set 200 years apart, but writer-director Sofia Coppola can’t help but compare the two historical women ahead of her upcoming Priscilla Presley biopic.
Coppola’s 2006 film “Marie Antoinette” starred Kirsten Dunst as the iconic royal who reigned amid the French Revolution. Now, the “Bling Ring” helmer adapts Priscilla’s 1985 memoir “Elvis and Me” with Cailee Spaeny (“Mare of Easttown”) and Jacob Elordi playing married couple Priscilla and Elvis. Priscilla serves as an executive producer of the film.
“I’m excited to do something rooted in that Americana style for the first time. And Priscilla is a quintessential glamor icon,” Coppola told Vogue. “I was just so interested in Priscilla’s story and her perspective on what it all felt like to grow up as a teenager in Graceland. She was going through all the stages of young womanhood in such an amplified world — kind of similarly to Marie Antoinette.

Step aside Austin Butler, there’s a new Elvis in the building.
Hot off of Butler’s turn as the King of Rock ‘n Roll for Baz Luhrmann’s mind-bending biopic “Elvis,” Jacob Elordi will play the “Jailhouse Rock” crooner for A24 drama “Priscilla.”
Based on Priscilla Presley’s 1985 memoir “Elvis and Me,” the film will be directed by Sofia Coppola and star “Mare of Easttown” breakout Cailee Spaeny as the ex-wife of Elvis. Coppola also adapted Priscilla’s New York Times bestselling memoir for the big screen.

It’s nice, every so often, to find yourself squinting and emitting a tiny what the fuck at a production item. I couldn’t help—really couldn’t help; forgive the language otherwise—doing so at news, per Variety, that Sofia Coppola’s next feature is an adaptation of Priscilla Presley’s 1985 memoir Elvis and Me, whittled down to a punchier Priscilla, and will be led by Cailee Spaeny and Jacob Elordi as (of course) Priscilla and Elvis, respectively. With A24’s backing, production begins this fall.
A cursory glance over Presley’s memoir would profusely suggest Coppola’s film will center the spouse far more than Baz Luhrmann’s abysmal biopic—a troubled, drug-dependent, jealous, unfaithful man. Avid fans of the director can start to envision where Coppola’s interests lie, and the return of her primary creative collaborators—Philippe Le Sourd behind the camera; Sarah Flack on editing...

“The Trial of the Chicago 7” got a big boost in its bid for Best Editing at the Oscars with a win at the Ace Golden Eddie Awards on April 17. It prevailed in the drama race at these awards bestowed by American Cinema Editors over two of its Oscar rivals — “Nomadland” and “Sound of Metal” — as well as “Mank” and “Minari.”
Another of the Oscar nominees, “Promising Young Woman,” lost the comedy/musical category to “Palm Springs.” The other contenders in that race were “Borat Subsequent Moviefilm,” “I Care a Lot” and “On the Rocks.”
Oscar watchers were sure to be watching Saturday’s virtual ceremony. The American Cinema Editors guild, which hands out its awards on April 17, has a good track record as a preview of the Oscar winner for Best Picture (18 out of the last 30) and a great one for forecasting who will win the Film Editing Oscar (22 of the last 30). Not surprisingly, it is also fairly prescient when it comes to predicting the five Film Editing Oscar slots. Four of this year’s Academy Awards nominees contend for this cutting prize; “The Father” was snubbed by the American Cinema Editors.
The Ace Eddie Awards divide their prizes for editing between dramas and comedies/musicals. Oscar nominees “Nomadland,” “Sound of Metal and “The Trial of the Chicago 7” contend here in the drama race, which is rounded out by “Mank” and “Minari.” Facing off on the comedy side against Oscar nominee “Promising Young Woman” are “Borat Subsequent Moviefilm,” “I Care a Lot,” “On the Rocks” and “Palm Springs.

The artisan categories are often overlooked, especially when it comes to the overseen and the overdue Academy Awards. This year, there is a fresh crop of talent in each Oscar race, but several craftspeople who have worked on this year’s contenders should have received nominations long ago.
Many of these artisans have made the Oscars shortlist for their respective categories for this year’s nominations, which will be announced on March 15. With the voting opening on March 5, it’ll be a photo finish for many to garner AMPAS voters’ attention.
Here are a few of the contenders.

“Knives Out” (2019)

When it comes to predicting the Oscar winner for Best Film Editing, you can’t go wrong by looking for the movie with the most cuts. Past winners “The Bourne Ultimatum” (2008), “Mad Max: Fury Road” (2016) and “Ford v Ferrari” (2020) included high-octane action sequences with frenetic cutting. And a slew of other champs — including “Saving Private Ryan” in 1999, “Black Hawk Down” (2002), “The Hurt Locker” (2010), “Hacksaw Ridge” (2017) and “Dunkirk” (2018) — have been war pictures. (Scroll down for the most up-to-date 2021 Oscar predictions for Best Film Editing.)
Oscar voters also embrace film editors who skillfully juggle multiple storylines, as was the case with “Traffic” (2001) and “Crash” (2006). And they like films that expertly inter-cut music with images, such as “Cabaret” (1973), “Chicago” (2003), “Whiplash” (2015) and “Bohemian Rhapsody” (2019). Special effects extravaganzas like “The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King” (2004) and “Gravity” (2014) won by deftly blurring the lines between the real and the fantastic.

"Tell me about Jenny!" A new trailer has launched for the 4K restoration, 20th anniversary re-release of one of Steven Soderbergh's forgotten early films called The Limey. This "pulp revenge" tale is about a volatile, dangerous Englishman who goes to Los Angeles to find the man he considers responsible for his daughter's death. Not many are familiar with it, released in 1999 after premiering in Cannes. It was Soderbergh's 8th feature film that he directed right after Out of Sight, and right before Erin Brockovich, in the midst of his comeback years. Starring Terrance Stamp, and Lesley Ann Warren, Luis Guzmán, Barry Newman, Joe Dallessandro, Nicky Katt, plus Peter Fonda. "Edited by frequent Soderbergh collaborator Sarah Flack with a constantly surprising and jagged rhythm, and superbly acted by its ensemble cast, The Limey endures as a seminal work of American film modernism and a love letter to the art cinema of the sixties.

All below-the-line artists are tasked with interpreting a director’s vision through their craft, but the editor’s contribution is often the hardest to separate. As Stanley Kubrick said, “Editing is the only unique aspect of filmmaking which does not resemble any other art form.” That ability to jump through time and space, to show the viewer an image, cut, and connect it to something entirely different to create new meaning, rhythm, and emotion is at the core of how a director guides the audience.
Further complicating the ability to measure their contribution is how our favorite auteurs often rely on the same editors, forming professional marriages that span decades. Where does Steven Spielberg’s visual efficiency end, and Michael Kahn’s precision start? Could Spike Lee boldly shift tonal gears, if Barry Alexander Brown wasn’t there to preserve internal consistency? How much of Sofia Coppola’s distinct pace...

Cinematographer Edward Lachman may not be a household name, though he undoubtedly should be. One of the most highly regarded directors of photography in the business, Lachman has collaborated with some of the best filmmakers of his generation: Steven Soderbergh, Todd Haynes, Todd Solondz, Paul Schrader, Sofia Coppola, Robert Altman, Werner Herzog, George Sluizer, Wim Wenders, Mira Nair, Ulrich Seidl, and Andrew Niccol — to name a handful.
His career began in 1975 by photographing the infamous Sylvester Stallone–Henry Winkler Brooklyn gang cult-fave, The Lords of Flatbush. In the last 40 years, he’s carved out a truly varied résumé. For example: in 2002, Lachman co-directed Ken Park with filmmaker Larry Clark, before moving onto direct the exercise video Carmen Electra’s Aerobic Striptease in 2003.

Now this is a list that could result in a lot of fascinating dissection and thanks to HitFix it comes to our attention almost three years after it was originally released back in 2012, celebrating the Motion Picture Editors Guild's 75th anniversary. Over at HitFix, Kris Tapley asks, "Is this news to anyone elsec" Um, yes, I find it immensely interesting and a perfect starting point for anyone looking to further explore the art of film editing. In an accompanying article we get the particulars concerning what films were eligible and how films were to be considered: In our Jan-feb 12 issue, we asked Guild members to vote on what they consider to be the Best Edited Films of all time. Any feature-length film from any country in the world was eligible. And by "Best Edited," we explained, we didn't just mean picture; sound, music and mixing were to be considered as well.

A random bit of researching on a Tuesday night led me to something I didn't know existed: The Motion Picture Editors Guild's list of the 75 best-edited films of all time. It was a feature in part celebrating the Guild's 75th anniversary in 2012. Is this news to anyone else? I confess to having missed it entirely. Naturally, I had to dig in. What was immediately striking to me about the list — which was decided upon by the Guild membership and, per instruction, was considered in terms of picture and sound editorial as opposed to just the former — was the most popular decade ranking. Following a bidding war that netted the film a sale of $12 million, a record at Sundance, the much hyped Me & Earl and the Dying Girl won both the Grand Jury Prize and the Audience Award from the Sundance Film Festival Awards Saturday evening. The previous film to win both prizes was 2014’s Whiplash, which is now up for an Oscar nomination for Best Picture.
Me and Earl and the Dying Girl (our own Dylan Griffin raved about it) tells the story of an anti-social high school senior who is forced by his mother to become friends with a girl suffering from leukemia. Directed by Alfonso Gomez-Rejon (Glee, American Horror Story), the film stars Thomas Mann, Rj Cyler, Olivia Cooke, Nick Offerman, Connie Britton, and Molly Shannon.
Fox Searchlight and Indian Paintbrush are now planning a 2015 release for the film. Me and Earl and the Dying Girl was selected by a jury that included Cary Fukunaga,...

Matthew Heineman’s unfathomably constructed Cartel Land landed to Jury Prizes in Best Director and Excellence in Cinematography. In stellar Next, the unique prize went to Josh Mond’s brilliant directorial debut James White. Here is the press release and all the winners.
