The Black Music Action Coalition called Rolling Stone founder Jann Wenner’s exclusion of Black and female musicians from his upcoming book The Masters “an offensive and absurd erasure.”
The organization — which was founded in the summer of 2020 amidst the uprising against police brutality and wider reckonings with systemic racism and injustice — issued the statement after Wenner was widely criticized for comments about Black and female artists in an interview with The New York Times. In the interview, Werner said Black and female musicians “didn’t articulate at the level...

In the 20 years since it was released, The Whisper has become the loudest part of Lost in Translation. What did Bill Murray’s Charlotte? And what did he mean? Was it really "I have to be leaving, but I won't let that come between us. Okay?" as is often theorised? Or maybe Murray, out of character, said "I love you is the best thing I can come up with. At some point, he has to tell it to her” which is another popular suggestion. Maybe it was something about her binning her absent husband. Maybe it was nothing at all.
“That thing Bill whispers to Scarlett was never intended to be anything,” director Sofia Coppola on the film’s 15th anniversary. “I was going to figure out later what to say and add it in and then we never did.” But trying to understand that mysterious exchange has for too...

Guns N’ Roses’ summer tour has been rich in surprises: an updated and shuffling set list, the debut of the new song “Perhaps,” and guests ranging from Carrie Underwood to Andrew Dice Clay. Add Chrissie Hynde to that list. On Monday, the Pretenders leader joined Axl Rose and the band onstage at Boston’s Fenway Park to play some mean harmonica on “Bad Obsession.”

Danny Bennett, son of the late singer Tony Bennett, has revealed the last thing his father said to him. “His last words to me [were] ‘Thank you,'” he told Today’s Hoda Kotb on Thursday. “Can’t say it better than that.”

After headlining himself last year, Paul McCartney returned to Glastonbury in 2023 as a spectator. And by all accounts, he had one hell of a time.
McCartney was seen watching several of the weekend’s performances from the side of the stage. On Friday, he took in Foo Fighters’ surprise set. On Saturday, he watched as Guns N’ Roses covered Wings’ “Live and Let Die.” And on Sunday, he was capturing his own cell phone video of Elton John performing “Don’t Let the Sun Go Down on Me.”
Macca also briefly popped up on stage during Pretenders’ Saturday set, where he gave the crowd a quick wave. He hung out backstage with Chrissie Hynde, posed for a photo with Foo Fighters drummer Josh Freese (and Pat Smear), and even took in a sun set with his wife Nancy Shevell.

Following Foo Fighters’ surprise Friday performance at Glastonbury, Dave Grohl stuck around for another unannounced cameo on Saturday: the Foo Fighters frontman played drums for Pretenders during their own set at the UK festival.
Grohl wasn’t the only big-name guest to join Chrissie Hynde-led outfit. Johnny Marr, who briefly played in Pretenders following The Smiths’ breakup in 1987, also made a surprise appearance during the band’s Glastonbury set.
The Pretenders’ set included songs like “Back On the Chain Gang,” “Don’t Get Me Wrong,” “I’ll Stand By You,” and “Tattooed Love Boys.” Watch fan captured footage below.
Pretenders are set to release their new album, Relentless, on September 15th. Last week, they unveiled their latest single, “I Think About You Daily” featuring Jonny Greenwood.
Later this summer, Pretenders will open for Guns N’ Roses on their US stadium tour. Tickets are available here.

After finding explosive success in England, The Beatles hoped to establish themselves in the United States with a performance on The Ed Sullivan Show. The band wasn’t sure they’d catch on in America. While they were hopeful, they had to break into a big market, and the American media didn’t know what to make of them. Of course, Beatlemania caught fire after the Ed Sullivan performance. Some critics, though, thought the band did a terrible job.
The Beatles’ performance on ‘The Ed Sullivan Show’ received some negative reviews
The Beatles made their U.S. television debut on The Ed Sullivan Show. Already, the band knew they had fans in the United States; when they arrived in New York, thousands of people greeted them at the airport. Still, they hadn’t won over American critics. They wrote off the band as a passing fad, undeserving of the attention they received.

Humane Society International and our partner organizations together constitute one of the world’s largest animal protection organizations-backed by 11 million people. Hsi works to protect all animals-including animals in laboratories, farm animals, companion animals, and wildlife-and our record of achievement demonstrates our dedication and effectiveness. With the support of our advocates and donors, we have advocated for strong legislation to protect animals. For example, in 2009 we helped achieve a European Union ban on trade in seal products, a major step toward ending the annual commercial seal slaughter in Canada. We work with local animal organizations in countries all over the world to provide direct, hands-on care to animals in need and spread the culture of compassion. Our campaigns strike at the root of problems affecting animals by providing the tools and resources to prevent animal suffering both now and in the future.

Coming after 2018's "Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse," which is one of the most inventive animated movies ever made, the new "Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse" is nothing close to a conventional sequel. The eye-popping, mind bending follow-up deconstructs and reinvents the superhero genre in act a joyous act of rebellion that could only be done inside this medium. Live-action comic book fare simply can't compete with groundbreaking animation at this simultaneously inspiring and disruptive level.
For a movie that's perfectly fine with tearing down and rebuilding what came before, "Across the Spider-Verse" carves out its own path in the world of film with unapologetic, reckless teenage abandon. So it's a perfect fit for the Brooklyn born and bred version of Spidey, Miles Morales, on alternate Earth-1610 -- a kid who isn't afraid to break the rules and go his own way.

After miraculously enticing Axl Rose to join her onstage at Stagecoach 2022 and, yet again, at her L.A. headlining concert earlier this year, Carrie Underwood will return the favor and open for Guns N’ Roses when the band plays Nashville on its summer 2023 tour. Underwood joined the entirety of Gnr onstage in London last summer, and it’s a fair bet fans will see her again between Rose, Slash, and Duff McKagan in Music City.
In addition to the Nashville appearance at Geodis Park, Underwood will open two Guns N’ Roses shows in Canada.

The "Alien" universe created by director Ridley Scott and screenwriter Dan O'Bannon in 1979 is finally making the jump to episodic television in FX's long-awaited series from "Fargo" and "Legion" mastermind Noah Hawley. The project has been gestating since December of 2020 when it was first announced at Disney's Investor Day presentation by FX Chairman John Landgraf. Not to be confused with Fede Alvarez's upcoming "Alien" movie that's set to eventually premiere on Hulu, Hawley's "Alien" series will be set decades before the original voyage of the Nostromo and will mark the first time that the sci-fi horror franchise has been set on Earth.
For fans who remember the intentionally misleading teaser trailer for "Alien 3" that promised a return to our home planet, the potential of seeing a Xenomorph on our own home turf should be an exciting prospect. FX's "Alien" will officially be the first live-action television series,...

Noah Hawley’s FX series Alien has found one of its leads in Sydney Chandler, the network has confirmed.
Back at January’s TCA, FX boss John Landgraf said that the Fargo creator was in pre-production on Alien with an eye on starting production this year. The series reportedly takes place before the days of Sigourney Weaver’s alien fighter Ripley. It’s the first story that takes place in the Alien franchise on Earth, 70 years from current day.
Alien brings Chandler back to work at FX, the actress having made her television debut in the network’s series Pistol from director and executive producer Danny Boyle. That six-episode series, which premieres May 31 exclusively on Hulu, centers around the legendary Sex Pistols. Chandler portrays singer-songwriter Chrissie Hynde of the Pretenders.

Although there are a record number of women nominees this year, Love cited Kate Bush as a specific example, noting that she did not make the ballot until 2018 even though she was eligible for nomination since 2004.

Courtney Love is ready for the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame to start recognizing women and people of color. The "Doll Parts" singer wrote a scathing op-ed on the subject for The Guardian on March 17. In her essay, she noted that women make up barely eight percent of the inductees, while the statistics for people of color are roughly the same. Popsugar reached out to reps for the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame for comment on Love's remarks, but did not receive an immediate response.
"If the Rock Hall is not willing to look at the ways it is replicating the violence of structural racism and sexism that artists face in the music industry, if it cannot properly honor what visionary women artists have created, innovated, revolutionized and contributed to popular music - well, then let it go to hell in a handbag," Love wrote.
Throughout the essay, Love notes...

Courtney Love is calling out the lack of female artists in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame — as well as the lack of women on the institution’s nomination board and voting body — in a scathing new op-ed the Hole singer penned in the Guardian. “The Rock Hall’s canon-making doesn’t just reek of sexist gatekeeping, but also purposeful ignorance and hostility,” she wrote.
Love, herself now eligible for Rock Hall consideration, noted that of all of the inductees, just 8.48% are women, while adding that “the Rock Hall voters,...

The vibe for costumes in Amazon’s “Daisy Jones & the Six” ranges from boho chic to lots of denim and earthtones oozing ‘70s California vibes. Costume designer Denise Wingate spent many weekends scouring thrift shops and flea markets to build the wardrobe that consisted of over 1500 changes for the series based on the best-selling novel by Taylor Jenkins Reid.
Riley Keough stars as Daisy Jones, the lead singer of the rock band The Six, which is shown as it climbs the music charts. Showrunner Scott Neustadter wanted the visuals to look “realistic and not costumey,” says Wingate, who started by putting together individual mood boards for the principals.
She explains the ideas for each character, with authenticity being the key. “For keyboardist Karen Sirko (Suki Waterhouse), Karen was tougher and inspired by Patti Smith, Suzi Quatro and Chrissie Hynde. Camila (Camila Morrone) was her own separate animal. She was...

Vivienne Westwood, the rule-breaking, irreverent fashion designer who came to prominence along with the Sex Pistols in the 1970s, has died at age 81.
On its Instagram page, her fashion brand announced that the designer — one of the original architects of the punk fashion look — died Thursday “peacefully and surrounded by her family, in Clapham, South London.”
“Vivienne continued to do the things she loved, up until the last moment, designing, working on her art, writing her book, and changing the world for the better. She led an amazing life. Her innovation and impact over the last 60 years has been immense and will continue into the future,” continued the post.
In a statement, Andreas Kronthaler, Vivienne’s husband and creative partner said: “I will continue with Vivienne in my heart. We have been working until the end and she has given me plenty of things to get on with.

Merry Christmas, one and all, it's time to break out the mince pies (as if you haven't already), pour the prosecco and put on some festive music.
Christmas songs don't always have to be merry – among the most beloved festive tunes are "2,000 Miles" by The Pretenders, which is curiously bleak, and the heartbreak of Wham!'s "Last Christmas".
Of course, there are plenty of upbeat songs on our list, too, from Brenda Lee's "Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree" to Mariah Carey's"All I Want for Christmas is You".
Here are some of our favourites, from Forties classics to more recent pop hits, to get your Christmas celebrations into full swing.
18) “Happy Xmas (War is Over)” – John Lennon and Yoko Ono
There’s a caveat to the optimistic message of the song’s title. “War is over,” sing a choir of children over festive tambourines, but only, they add,...

It's time to get acquainted with Sydney Chandler. Fans may recognize her from the 2022 Hulu miniseries "Pistol," in which she portrays Chrissie Hynde, the founder and lead vocalist of '70s rock band Pretenders, marking her first major TV role. She also recently made her film debut in "Don't Worry Darling" as Violet, a housewife and friend of main character Alice Chambers (Florence Pugh). Up next, she'll be starring in Susannah Grant's sex-trafficking drama "Coercion." Even though she's just getting her start as an actor, Hollywood isn't a new concept to Sydney, who grew up with a famous TV coach and dad for a father.
Sydney's dad, Kyle Chandler, is a film and TV national treasure. He's starred in a litany of beloved titles, including "Grey's Anatomy," "Super 8," "Argo," "The Spectacular Now," "The Wolf of Wall Street," and the Godzilla series, just to name a few. In fact,...

Sarah Harding had hoped to be able to attend her Gala dinner before she died, Girls Aloud bandmate Cheryl Tweedy has revealed.
Harding died of breast cancer in September last year at the age of 39, but revealed her final wish while staying with Tweedy weeks before her death. She was apparently keen to be able to thank those who had helped her during her illness.
"I asked her over and over again how we could help. Was there anything she truly wanted or needed?” wrote Tweedy in an article for Vogue.
“Finally she said to me: ‘I would love you to create an evening, a gala of some kind for me. If I am here and can attend I will be able to thank those who have helped me through all of this, and pay that forward in a way that will help others when I’m gone.’”

Taylor Hawkins was sunshine incarnate. The late Foo Fighters drummer – also a songwriter, singer and multi-instrumentalist – had an unrivalled sense of positivity and joie de vivre. His megawatt smile could power a stadium show all of its own.
The first of two tribute concerts to Hawkins, who died aged 50 in March this year, does its utmost to summon that same energy. Gathered here at Wembley Stadium are some of Hawkins’s closest friends – the surviving Foos members, of course – family, collaborators and admirers, for a six-hour marathon of a show. Understandably, the mood that fills the 80,000-capacity venue is a strange one. Hawkins’s favourite songs are played ahead of the late-afternoon start time – Abba, Elo, George Michael – but no one feels like dancing just yet.

The Rolling Stones have been doing Rolling Stones documentaries for nearly as long as they’ve been a band, and given their early goes, it’s impressive they’ve kept at it. The first, Charlie Is My Darling (1966), was shelved for decades due to legal fights and various shenanigans; The Rolling Stones Rock and Roll Circus (1968), a trainwreck of poor planning, was also shelved for years. Jean Luc-Godard’s brilliant but befuddling docufiction One Plus One (Sympathy For The Devil) got consigned to the art film circuit that same year,...
