The real-life Candy Montgomery became a free woman thanks to Don Crowder, the cocksure personal injury attorney who would represent the Texas housewife in the murder trial of Betty Gore in 1980.
To portray such an integral character in the HBO Max limited series Love & Death starring Elizabeth Olsen and Jesse Plemons, David E. Kelley zeroed in on Tom Pelphrey, the actor best known for playing Laura Linney’s brother Ben in Netflix’s Ozark. The limited series also stars Lily Rabe as Betty, the woman whose husband Allan (Plemons) had an affair with Candy (Olsen).
Here, the actor who also starred in season one of Outer Range talks about why he took the role of the overly-confident attorney — and the sorrow he felt when he learned how the real Don Crowder took his own life 18 years after Montgomery was found not guilty.
Deadline: What was the most alluring aspect of this project?...

2017-12-11T07:05:07-08:00'Big Little Lies' Season 2 Is Official
We've been pretty sure for quite some time that there would be a second season of Big Little Lies, but there was business to be attended to before the season was a certainty. Now that business is done, and we know for sure that HBO will produce a seven-episode second season. Stars (and producers) Reese Witherspoon and Nicole Kidman will be back, and most of the rest of the original cast probably will be, too.

Big Little Lies season two is officially a go.
HBO on Friday confirmed months of speculation that the Reese Witherspoon and Nicole Kidman miniseries would return for a second season.
The production has tapped Andrea Arnold, who won an Oscar for writing and directing her short film Wasp, to helm all seven episodes of season two.

“Big Little Lies” is officially coming back. After months of speculation over whether or not the hit limited series would return, HBO has officially given the green light to Season 2.
Reese Witherspoon and Nicole Kidman are set to star. No other cast members have been confirmed, but the “most of the cast is expected to return and negotiations are underway.”
David E. Kelley — who wrote all of Season 1 — will pen Season 2, as well, “partially” based on a story by the book’s author (and series producer) Liane Moriarty. But he’ll be working with a new director: Andrea Arnold will direct all seven episodes of Season 2. She replaces Jean-Marc Vallee, who won an Emmy for directing Season 1, but expressed disinterest in returning for more episodes.

Welcome to Career Watch, a vocational checkup of top actors and directors. In this edition we tackle Alexander Skarsgård, who’s advancing his career with a canny combo of studio movies, indie films, and premium television.
Bottom Line: You never know where you stand with Skarsgård, who has the complexity of a character actor beneath the leading-man looks that launched a thousand memes. (Reads one: “Research shows that if you’re afraid of spiders, you are more likely to find one in your bedroom… I’m really afraid of Alexander Skarsgård.”)
His muscular swagger and danger is on display in “The Legend of Tarzan,” but his tender attentions to wife Jane (Margot Robbie) were that film’s throbbing heart. And in the hugely popular and topical HBO drama series “Big Little Lies,” he holds his own with an ensemble of powerful women including executive producer Nicole Kidman, who performs an...

It’s the last day of June, and Billy Bob Thornton and co-star Nina Arianda are standing outside of Los Angeles City Hall, braving the summer heat to shoot a scene for their new Amazon series “Goliath.” It’s the show’s penultimate episode, and IndieWire is spending the day with the cast as they prepare to wrap Season 1.
Written by the Emmy-winning David E. Kelley and Jonathan Shapiro (“The Practice”), “Goliath” stars Thornton as lawyer Billy McBride, whose alcoholism ruined his marriage and got him booted from his own company by his former partner Donald Cooperman (William Hurt). Billy’s apathetic lifestyle changes when low rent practitioner Patty Solis-Papagian (Nina Arianda) enlists his help for what seems like a straightforward wrongful death case. Instead, it pits him against his old company.

Stephen King has teamed up with David E. Kelley (Ally McBeal, The Practice, Boston Legal) to adapt his novel Mr. Mercedes into a limited series. This is one of the few books King has written that I haven’t had a chance to read yet. The story centers on a psychopath who commits mass murder by driving his Mercedes into a crowd, and it follows a retired cop who makes it his mission to bring him to justice. Kelley had this to say in a statement:
“This is an amazing opportunity to adapt a script from material penned by one of the world’s most acclaimed and accomplished authors. ‘Mr. Mercedes’ is a great story that will translate beautifully to the screen if I don’t mess it up.”
This sounds like it could make for a fantastic series to watch. It will be directed by Jack Bender, who previously...

Chicago – Sequels just need a dose of energy and creativity, and then they work. The cast of “Think Like a Man Too” – including Kevin Hart, Regina Hall and Terrence Jenkins – provide that energy, as the gang from the first film heads to Las Vegas for a competing bachelor and bachelorette parties. The audience wins that contest.
Kevin Hart is arguably one of the hottest performers of the moment. Fresh from his record breaking stand-up film of last year, he hit a trifecta in late 2013 and early 2014 with the films “Grudge Match,” “Ride Along” and “About Last Night.” His quick wit and energy also has the character of appreciation, for the collaborator and director Tim Story, and his co-stars Terrence Jenkins and Regina Hall.

Coming from famed drama creator David E. Kelley, Monday Mornings showcases the internal trials of doctors held accountable by their peers for their mistakes and on-the-spot judgment calls both in and out of the operating room. With medical malpractice cases on the rise, internal review is more critical than ever. So pulling back the curtain on this time-honored tradition, David E. Kelley along with co-creator Sanjay Gupta, and his strong cast of stars, have brought the medical drama Monday Mornings to life for TNT. In a recent press conference call, stars Jamie Bamber and Jennifer Finnigan shared what drew them to the role, the tricky parts of mastering medical dialogue and procedure, and what they think makes their show special.
What drew you to Medical Mornings when you first read the script?

If you dread Monday mornings, you might feel better upon seeing how the doctors in a new drama series start their weeks.
Based on a novel by Dr. Sanjay Gupta, CNN's chief medical correspondent, TNT's "Monday Mornings" -- executive produced by David E. Kelley ("Boston Legal," "Ally McBeal") and appropriately premiering on a Monday, Feb. 4 -- centers on a ritual for the surgeons at a Portland, Ore., hospital. Each Monday, Chelsea General's quietly fearsome chief of staff (played by Alfred Molina) cross-examines them about operations they've performed ... with the questioning particularly intense if they were unsuccessful.
Jamie Bamber ("Battlestar Galactica") and Jennifer Finnigan ("Better With You") portray two of the doctors, whose personal involvement makes them even more a mutual support system in the face of being interrogated on their professional decisions and actions. Ving Rhames ("Pulp Fiction") also stars as the hospital's trauma chief, with Bill Irwin, Emily Swallow,...

God complex anyone? Jamie Bamber's character Dr. Tyler Wilson
gets knocked off his pedestal in the Monday Mornings pilot.
For most of us, Monday mornings are when we drag ourselves out of weekend mode and get back to the grind of our respective jobs. On the new David E. Kelley-created medical drama, Monday Mornings are the time when the doctors at the fictional Chelsea General Hospital in Portland, Oregon must defend themselves on the decisions and actions made that have often lead to huge mistakes and, in the worst cases, death.
The series was born out of the book of the same name by Dr. Sanjay Gupta, who is also Executive Producer of the series. Jaimie Alexander is a big comic book fan. She not only gets to play Lady Sif in the "Thor" movies, but she also has her sights set on one day playing Marvel mutant X-23. ("I'm too old to play X-23. I've been told 100 times," she tells MTV News with a laugh. It's okay! I get it!") But one character she doesn't expect to ever play is Wonder Woman — not because of a lack of interest, but because she wants to see the character treated with the respect she deserves.
"I used to be [interested], but then I've seen how many failed attempts there have been in making it," Alexander told us about her "Wonder Woman" aspirations during the "Last Stand" junket. "It's embarrassing for me as a woman, seeing what they did with that TV show."

Jennifer Finnigan was happy enough to land her latest series job, not anticipating her spouse also would end up on the show.
The former star of such series as "Better With You" and "Close to Home" plays one of the surgeons in the Dr. Sanjay Gupta-created, David E. Kelley-produced TNT drama "Monday Mornings," premiering Monday, Feb. 4. Another familiar face weaves in and out of the show wearing a white professional jacket: "Weekend at Bernie's" alum Jonathan Silverman, Finnigan's husband.
"That sort of came about last-minute," Finnigan tells Zap2it. "When I got the part, [Kelley's fellow executive producer] Bill D'Elia called to congratulate me, and I was in the car with Jonny. Jonny had done a pilot for David Kelley years ago, something about a wedding planner that didn't get picked up, but he'd had a really nice experience.

It's perfectly okay if your first reaction to news of a brand new Wonder Woman TV series is not a positive one. After all, as those who got their hands on the David Kelley pilot can attest, the last go around was... not great, to say the least.
But there's reason to believe that The CW's reported take will be something worth watching. For one, Allan Heinberg is involved; anyone who has read his Young Avengers comics knows that this is good news. Secondly, on paper, the idea of young Diana running around Themyscira in all her early Amazon glory has lots of potential if executed properly. Finally, those who've seen the "Arrow" pilot know that The CW has a pretty solid grasp on that character at least — and while Diana and Oliver are apples and oranges in almost every meaningful way, it's a sign that the network is safe...

Last year, NBC and David Kelley produced a "Wonder Woman" pilot starring Adrianne Palicki that was not picked up by the network, on account of the fact that it was horrible. (Don't blame Palicki. She had no chance of saving that script.)
We were concerned that such an abysmal take on the story would kill any chance of seeing Wonder Woman on our TV screens any time soon.
Luckily, The CW is willing to give Diana Prince another shot! With the success of "Smallville," (and our obsession with the upcoming "Arrow") we're pretty confident that The CW can pull off the story that Wonder Woman deserves.
Vulture reports that "Grey's Anatomy" scribe Allan Heinberg is taking the lead on the show, which is called "Amazon" and is being developed for the Fall 2013 season.
In the vein of "Smallville," "Amazon" will be an origin story, about Diana Prince's youth and...

For months now, fans of ABC’s Private Practice have been fretting: What does the show’s move to Tuesdays at 10 mean for its chances of renewal?
What it means, I for one have been saying, is… you now need to watch the show Tuesdays at 10. ”That’s exactly right,” says cast member KaDee Strickland, echoing that stance.
Speaking with TVLine about Private Practice‘s Tuesday relocation(kicking off tonight), Strickland notes a bit of a double standard being expressed by those who see the arrival of Shonda Rhimes’ Scandal as a bad omen for her Grey’s Anatomy spin-off.

A pilot episode for the newly proposed series from Green Lantern scribes Greg Berlanti and Marc Guggenheim has been ordered by the CW, home to long running Superman show Smallville. Over the past several several months since the CW's 10-year long running series Smallville left airwaves, development deals to get other DC Entertainment properties onto television have been continuously revealed. Producer and writer David Kelley recently attempted to bring Wonder Woman back to television this past year, but the pilot was passed over by all the interested networks. Supernatural creator and executive producer Eric Kripke has been tapped to produce a Deadman series. A show based on The Spectre -- DC Comics' Spirit of Vengeance who first appeared in print in January 1940 -- is also in the works,...

Or maybe, clothes don’t make the (super) man.
Last month, the New York Times ran a story – front page, no less – about ordinary citizens putting on costumes, giving themselves superheroish names, hitting the streets and combating real-life crime. Apparently, they mostly content themselves with non-violent intervention, or calling the cops, though one guy in Seattle was arrested after pepper-spraying a street fight.
They even have an organization called The Black Monday Society.
It’s been creeping into the zeitgeist for a while, this business of plain Janes and Joes putting on odd clothing and assuming alter egos. There’s been at least one movie that uses the idea as a springboard – it’s called “Super” and it’s popped up on cable channels hereabouts – and it was the core of a weekly television show titled “Who Wants To Be A Superhero?...

The author of such best sellers as "Presumed Innocent," "The Burden of Proof" and "Reversible Errors" tells Zap2it, "Somebody may beat me with a wet noodle for this, but the truth of the matter is that I don't watch any show every week. I catch them periodically. I happen to be a big viewer of TNT because I do watch basketball, so I saw that [the law show] 'Franklin & Bash' was heavily advertised.

Chicago – CBS’s “2 Broke Girls” doesn’t reinvent the formula but it certainly provides laughs within it. The new program most likely to be a consistent hit on any broadcast network makes a perfect fit on Monday nights and should work for audiences loyal to “How I Met Your Mother” and “Two and a Half Men.” With two very-talented stars, clever writing, and a funny pilot, this could be a Monday night staple for years to come.
TV Rating: 3.5/5.0
The “Laverne & Shirley” formula of “2 Broke Girls” features Kat Dennings and Beth Behrs in the title roles of Max Black and Caroline Channing. Max has been a “broke girl” for years. She’s the working-class heroine of the piece, the tough-as-nails, cynical waitress who knows a bad customer from a good one and basically keeps the greasy spoon at which she works from falling apart. Christina Hendricks is in the midst of a transformation into Hollywood superstar, jumping from the small screen to big. And if her next film works out, well, she could be kicking that super thing into overdrive.
Hendricks co-stars with Ryan Gosling and Carey Mulligan in "Drive," a Nicolas Winding Refn-directed film featuring Gosling a Hollywood stuntman who works as a robbery getaway driver by night, with Mulligan playing an autobody repairs shop customer who sets one night's run on a very diverted path.
The trailer for the film, which won major praise at Cannes, hits September 23rd, and a new red band trailer has just hit the web. It looks like a winner, and may not be the last time Hendricks and Refn work together.

NBC's new David Kelley-helmed 'Wonder Woman' series hasn't even hit the airwaves yet, but already the new costume has been criticized everywhere from Time magazine to Fox News. On 'The Talk' (weekdays, syndicated on CBS), '70s Wonder Woman Lynda Carter gave her thoughts: She prefers her old costume to the new one.
"They're trying to update with the way we're all doing leggings now and skinny jeans," she said. Carter's costume had the requisite superhero underwear, whereas the new costume is vinyl with long, form-fitting pants. Carter did say that Kelley is brilliant and full of surprises, so there's hope for the series. Sharon Osbourne promptly asked who he was.

Design thinking is a process of empathizing with the end user. Its principal guru is David Kelley, founder of Ideo and the Stanford design school, who takes a similar approach to managing people. He believes leadership is a matter of empathizing with employees. In this interview, he explains why leaders should seek understanding rather than blind obedience, why it's better to be a coach and a taskmaster and why you can't teach leadership with a PowerPoint presentation.
Kermit Pattison: How has the design thinking model influenced your approach to leading people?
David Kelley: The main tenet of design thinking is empathy for the people you're trying to design for. Leadership is exactly the same thing--building empathy for the people that you're entrusted to help. Once you understand what they really value, it's easy because you can mostly give it to them. You can give them the freedom or direction that they want.

What follows is the Wonder Woman portion of the interview. Follow the link for more. Vulture: Speaking of inviting scrutiny: Wonder Woman. Why did you decide to take this on? David Kelley: Well I first said no, for all the obvious reasons. It’s not really what I do; it’s not a genre that’s in my wheelhouse. But then I started thinking about, What if there were such a person in today’s world and what must it be like to be her? And I was imagining the sense of social isolation that she must feel, that she indeed would probably be a rather complicated beast. When I started thinking about all the complications and potential layers to this superhero, I just got more and more intrigued. It was also something I was a little bit afraid of. That’s good, too. Any writer should get out...

Since then the concept seems to have morphed into a new TV show, with Ally McBeal showrunner David E. Kelley scripting the pilot and Adrianne Palicki set to wield the golden lasso.
