Kidding has been nixed at Showtime after two seasons. The half-hour dramedy was a critical hit, but at the end of its sophomore run the Jim Carrey-led series was landing just 54,000 same-day viewers.
Showtime had originally built the project in-house with creator Dave Holstein (I’m Dying Up Here) and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind director Michel Gondry, and anticipation was high for the show, which marked Carrey’s first real TV dalliance since appearing on In Living Color many, many years ago.
“After two seasons, Kidding has concluded its run on Showtime,” reads a statement on the series’ cancelation. “We are very proud to have aired this imaginative, critically acclaimed and rewarding series, and we would like to thank Jim Carrey, Dave Holstein, Michael Aguilar, Michel Gondry and the entire cast and crew for their brilliant and tireless work.”

Penny Dreadful may have been a beloved, star-studded peak television offering that closed up shop after just three seasons, but the classic-literature-crossover Showtime supernatural series’ legacy lives on with a sequel. The new show is called Penny Dreadful: City of Angels and it’s airing now!
While the sequel series makes a dramatic shift away from the settings and characters of 2014-2016’s Penny Dreadful, it has the support of its key personnel, namely creator John Logan, who returns to serve as writer and executive producer, joined in the latter capacity by Michael Aguilar, who’s worked on recent Showtime offerings Kidding and I’m Dying Up Here.
Along with Logan and Aguilar, Penny Dreadful: City of Angels sees executive producers on board in Oscar winner Sam Mendes and Pippa Harris (Revolutionary Road) on behalf of Neal Street Productions. Logan is onboard via his Desert Wolf Productions. James Bagley is also on board,...

The world of “Penny Dreadful: City of Angels” blends realism with the fantastical world of the supernatural, and as its cast and creator will tell you, this mix allows a story often ignored by history books to flourish. The new spin-off, airing on Showtime, follows Santiago “Tiago” Vega (Daniel Zovatto), the first Chicano detective on the Lapd, as he investigates a murder with possible ties to the growing unrest in his community. The world of 1938 Los Angeles comes to life with an in-depth exploration of the Zoot Suit Riots and the creation of the Arroyo Seco freeway, mixed in with a good versus evil struggle involving supernatural beings.
Both series creator John Logan and actress Natalie Dormer make allusions to the show and our current political landscape. “If you think where we were the last five years,” says Dormer, “what both our countries [Britain and America] have gone through, the polarization of right versus left,...

NBC has opted not to order additional episodes from new series Bluff City Law. The legal family drama starring Jimmy Smits will complete its initial 10-episode order, remaining in its high-profile Monday 10 Pm time slot. While the network has made no decision beyond that, a Season 2 renewal appears highly unlikely.
The news comes after four softly rated airings of Bluff City Law, which had struggled to hold onto its Voice lead-in in the Monday 10 Pm slot, slipping to a Live+Same Day low of 3.4 million viewers and a 0.5 adults 18-49 rating this week. Without big delayed viewing bumps, Bluff City Law faced long odds for survival.
It is a change of fortune for the legal drama, which got an early vote of confidence from NBC in August when the network ordered six additional scripts.

Legal procedurals have been part of the television landscape since the '50s.
They're usually not my cup of tea, but then there's Bluff City Law.
There's a lot to love about this series including it's impressive pedigree, but the most compelling aspect is how the overall story makes you feel.
On Bluff City Law Season 1 Episode 1, we're introduced to a cast of characters who are immediately engaging and funny and bring the stories of hope to life.
Bluff City Law was co-created by Dean Georgaris, the guy behind that other favorite series of mine, the now-canceled The Brave, and Michael Aguilar, a producer on The Departed -- one of the best movies ever.

As a legal procedural emanating from outside the imaginings of Dick Wolf, “Bluff City Law” at least represents something novel for NBC. But its understanding of the workings of the legal profession is frustratingly limited in a familiar way — not merely because it falls so nearly into timeworn cliché but also because it seems to trust its audience so little. In its first two episodes, what works tepidly well here is a family dynamic that at least feels unusual; what does not are heard-them-all-before clichés about the power and responsibilities of attorneys. In its relentless speechifying and overly ingratiating need to constantly show off and burnish its moral compass, “Bluff City Law” resembles no current show more than “This Is Us” — and is proof that what has made that show a hit cannot easily be replicated in the courtroom.

Bluff City Law begins on NBC tonight with an incredibly talented cast and creator.
Over a half dozen of the cast has also been on Broadway, and with that kind of pedigree, you know you're going to get powerhouse performances.
We had a chance to catch up with them at SeriesFest in Denver this summer. Who better to convince you to watch the compelling new drma?
Bluff City Law creator Dean Georgaris shared how the series came to fruition.
"You know, my co-creator, Michael Aguilar and I were sitting around, and we were talking about what kind of show we wanted to see, because that is really a lot of times the best way to figure out what kind of show you want to create, as in success, you end up living with it for five or 10 years.

Piper Perabo has joined Showtime’s “Penny Dreadful” spinoff series, “Penny Dreadful: City of Angels,” in a recurring role.
Perabo will feature as Linda Craft, wife of Dr. Peter Craft, played by original series star Rory Kinnear and mother to Trevor (Hudson West) and Tom (Julian Hilliard). Her character is described as “a fading American Beauty rose, disappointed with her life and husband, and bored with her constrained suburban life.”
She joins previously cast Natalie Dormer (“Game of Thrones”), Michael Gladis, Lorenza Izzo, Adam Rodriguez (“CSI: Miami”), Thomas Kretschmann (“Avengers: Age of Ultron”) and Dominic Sherwood (“Shadowhunters”) and Ethan Peck (“Star Trek: Discovery”).

NBC’s new legal drama Bluff City Law marks Jimmy Smits’ return to the world of legal drama, having starred on L.A. Law, Outlaw and White House drama The West Wing. That said, you would think this would be old hat to the Emmy- and Golden Globe-winning actor, but at TCA, he told us otherwise.
“There was lots of brushing up [to do],” Smits said about getting back into the TV legal game. “You try to take the best from the experience you had.” He added that his Elijah Strait character on Bluff City Law is a lot different from L.A. Law‘s Victor Sifuentes and that he “doesn’t have a lot of balance.”
Co-created by Dean Georgaris and Michael Aguilar and written by Georgaris, Bluff City Law is a character-driven drama that follows the lawyers of an elite Memphis firm that specializes in the most controversial landmark civil rights cases.
