French crime films of the 1950s and ’60s often centered on professional criminals who followed codes of honor that put them on a more-or-less level moral playing field with the detectives tracking them down. Whether it was Jean Gabin’s aging gangster Max in Jacques Becker’s Touchez Pas au Grisbi or Alain Delon’s steely eyed assassin Jef in Jean-Pierre Melville’s Le Samouraï, these men had a sophistication and moral grounding that minimized the violence and chaos they caused. They were dangerous, even deadly, but only when they needed to be and in a way the cops could wrap their heads’ around.

Florence (Eleonore Bernheim) and Antoine (Nicolas Gob), in the French TV crime series “Art of Crime.” Courtesy of MHz Choice
This light crime series from France, “The Art of Crime,” provides the usual elements of TV mysteries with a painless education in the meanings of classic paintings and personalized art history. Don’t yawn yet. Keep reading a bit further.
The Paris police have a special unit for art-related crimes. Antoine (Nicolas Gob) is assigned to it as a banishment from the serious crime squad he’d thrived on until he pissed off the wrong honcho. His complete lack of knowledge about or interest in this milieu makes the transfer even more punitive. He’s also forced to accept a partnership with a quirky consultant, Florence (Eleonore Bernheim), whose expertise in the Old Masters is essential to catching the offenders. Each case is handled in two 50-minute episodes, so no pressure to binge.

Okay, we'll admit that this episode of Chicago Fire was a little better than some of the others this season have been.
There was at least some cohesiveness and a theme, and we got a few moments that suggested what may lie ahead for the rest of the season.
On Chicago Fire Season 12 Episode 9, we zeroed in on a few distinct relationships: Chief Boden and James, Violet and newcomer Rosie, and Mouch and a strange patient from the Paramedicine program named Kathy.
Others on the cast got minimal screen time throughout this episode except for Severide and Van Meter, who worked together to solve an arson case with some twists and turns.
Having been on for more than a decade, this show has explored tons of relationships. But none have been quite so captivating as the bond between Chief Boden and his stepson, James.

Antoine Fuqua is set to direct a feature documentary about Nelson Mandela, Variety has learned.
Provisionally titled “Troublemaker: The Story Behind the Mandela Tapes,” the doc will use newly discovered audio interviews with Mandela himself to deliver an “honest, accurate and definitive depiction” of the man who remains a global symbol of justice, hope and universal human dignity, according to a press release.
The “Training Day” director has teamed with Mandela’s close friend and former cellmate Mac Maharaj on the project, who will serve as an executive producer. While spending 12 years alongside Mandela in a tiny cell on Robben Island, Maharaj transcribed Mandela’s autobiography before eventually smuggling it out of jail. He later went on to become a minister in Mandela’s government.

"Hop on board and follow Antoine through his dreamy journey in the American landscapes..." Every once in a while we come across a mesmermzing music video that is a must watch. Enjoy this fresh animated video made for the French pop bland called Please and their track "Kind of Morning". The animation plays like a short film, hence why we're featuring it. The video tells a rather sweet story about a dock worker named Antoine who ends up on a voyage to America in search of a peaceful farm. It doesn't go the way he's hoping, and that's part of the lesson he learns along the way. The video is created by an animation group in France called Collectif 99°, a collective of talented animators & filmmakers; it's directed by three of them – Clara Franciosi, Salomé Hammann, and Valentine Vendroux. There is something funky yet endearing about this Antoine dude, the character design & also his story,...

Warning: contains major plot spoilers for Harlan Coben’s Shelter
Harlan Coben’s Shelter, now out in full on Prime Video, really bought in to Mickey’s dad’s mantra that “you can’t get a hit if you don’t swing the bat”. For eight episodes, it swung its bat wildly in every direction, spinning it crazily overhead and sweeping it low in circles, possibly while wearing a blindfold. If there was a hit to get, Shelter swung for it – and with some success.
It was the story of Mickey Bolitar, a bereaved teen who investigated the disappearance of a fellow high school student but discovered a great deal more. Adapted from Harlan Coben’s YA spin-off to his mega-successful Myron Bolitar series, the thriller veered hugely in tone (pairing real-life holocaust atrocity and child abuse with teen comedy felt tasteless at best) but its red herrings, cliff-hangers, twists...

The mythology around Japan as a nation of everyday ghosts — where the living and the dead share space, occasionally in view of each other — can lead certain western filmmakers into dubious territory: If you don’t recall how Gus van Sant floundered with the mawkish, condescending exoticism of “The Sea of Trees,” trust that it’s best forgotten. Centered on a long-grieving Frenchwoman who finally makes peace with her husband’s death over the course of a Japanese work trip, “Sidonie in Japan” risks similar pitfalls — but Élise Girard’s droll, bittersweet romance mostly dodges them with grace and good humor, plus a pointed awareness of the limitations of its outsider perspective.

Christmas might’ve come early this year if you’d actually watched a lifetime movie like Her Deadly Night In Paris that had a fairly decent production value for a change. What’s more, the central romance, casting a soothing filter over the narrative’s tension and alleviating it to some extent, is actually quite convincing and one that you’d root for. A meet-cute straight out of a romance novel might’ve been a promising start to Lucy’s time in France. But the family hosting her has more convoluted secrets than an American exchange student freshly in a whole new country can handle. Here’s how Lucy’s shockingly devastating stay at the Verdier house plays out in Her Deadly Night In Paris.

In 2008, French politician Simone Veil became only the sixth woman ever inducted into the Académie Française, an august institution tasked with the regulation of the French language. As a newly minted “immortal” — the unofficial name given to the Académie’s 40 members — she was presented with a sword that bore three engravings: the motto of France, that of Europe (“Unis dans le diversité“) and her Auschwitz prisoner number, which remained tattooed on her arm until her death in 2017. The sword glints briefly in Olivier Dahan’s “Simone: Woman of the Century” and though its symbolism is apt for such a crusading figure, it also reflects the film’s shortcomings: this is a reverential, ceremonial biopic content merely to inscribe Veil’s achievements across the surface of history, ornamenting a remarkable legacy, rather than exploring it.

Fighting with your neighbors is awful because, well, they can literally hit you where you live. Antoine and Olga, a middle-class French couple trying to get by on their remote Galician farm, learn that the hard way in The Beasts, the fifth feature from Rodrigo Sorogoyen. At a yawning 137 minutes this is no thriller, but it is an engaging, timeless examination of human tribalism, the nature of nature, and cinema itself.
The film opens on a slow, powerful sequence in which two young men wrestle a horse to the ground, then snaps to a game of dominoes at the local watering hole. Xan (Luis Zahera) is holding court over the games table, brashly shit-talking a fellow villager and browbeating his companions into agreement. One man, who Xan calls “Frenchy,” leaves to return to his farm. The Beasts then follows this man, who is actually named Antoine (Denis Ménochet), as he and his wife,...

Fifty-something French couple Antoine and his wife, Olga, move to Galicia looking for a fresh start. Instead, they find only hostility and hardship in Rodrigo Sorogoyen’s “The Beasts,” a deeply uncomfortable portrait of everyday evil that’s all the more terrifying for being true — not the two main characters, who are fictional, but the conflict that comes to define their new life in that wild corner of northwest Spain.
Antoine buys a modest plot on a primeval slope, fixing up the crumbling stone cottage into something cozy enough to call home. He and Olga, are fully prepared to face the challenges of raising crops on such unforgiving soil.
What they’re not prepared for is the open resentment of their xenophobic neighbors, 52-year-old Xan (Luis Zahera) and his brother, Loren (Diego Anido), who was kicked in the head by a horse at some point and has the jagged scar...

It’s hard to think of a less suspenseful set-up than the one writer-director Rodrigo Sorogoyen took on for his nail-biting new feature, The Beasts (As Bestas), which swept last year’s Goya awards in Spain.
In a tiny village lost in the hills of Galicia, a French couple has decided to restart their lives as organic farmers, selling produce at the town market while fixing up abandoned old houses in their downtime. The wife, Olga (Marina Foïs), and husband, Antoine (Denis Ménochet), are a gentle and thoughtful middle-aged pair, concerned by environmental issues and adept enough in Spanish to do business with the locals.
And yet, from its very first minute, this searing drama of rural strife, xenophobia and cultural hostility is filled with almost unbearable tension — a tension that boils over as Olga and Antoine clash with a pair of native-born brothers, Xan (Luis Zahera) and Lorenzo (Diego Anido...

After a mesmerizing slow-motion sequence of men struggling to pin down a wild horse, Rodrigo Sorogoyen’s The Beasts dives into the bad blood between its characters, already on the verge of boiling over. The first scene with characters and dialogue takes place in a bar serving as the social heart of the unnamed Galician mountain village where the story is set. Men drink and play dominos around a table, but the mood is anything but relaxed, due in part to the film’s natural lighting, so thin it looks almost fragile. One of the men, Xan Anta (Luis Zahera), propped up at every turn by his younger brother, Lorenzo (Diago Anido), dominates the conversation with venomous gossip. We sense that this is a daily ritual.

Jamie Foxx seems to finally be on the mend, with him posting a video on Instagram that – for the first time – addresses the health challenge that sidelined him for months. You can see the video below, but Foxx, while not getting into specifics, says he went to “hell and back”, but also throws cold water on some of the rumors, notably that he went blind and became paralyzed. “Now, you know, by being quiet sometimes things get out of hand. People saying what I got, some people said I was blind, but as you can see … the eyes are working just fine. Said I’m paralyzed — I’m not paralyzed.” Foxx also thanked his family and doctors for not only supporting him, but also allowing him privacy from the media as he fought to regain his health. After making more than $1.4 billion at the box office, producer Will Packer has gotten into the streaming game with “Praise This.”
The Peacock original marks Packer’s first time producing a movie that wasn’t destined for cinemas. While the new distribution plan might seem like a reaction to the hit or miss theatrical business — or the kind of pivot that would happen after a box office bomb, which Packer has yet to suffer, by the way — that’s not what’s behind the change in strategy.
“Malleable” is a word Packer has found himself using quite often in reference to the current state of moviemaking.
“I’ve had a lot of success with movies that were moderately-budgeted breakout theatrical hits,” he tells Variety over tea at the Mandarin Oriental in New York City. “But there are some of my movies that were successful theatrically five to 10 years ago that...

Denis Menochet stars in this terrific Spanish thriller from director Rodrigo Sorogoyen that plays like an arthouse version of Straw Dogs. Shot through with tension in every frame, it exerts an intense, powerful grip and the result is one of the very best films of the year.
Co-written by Sorogoyen and Isabel Pena and loosely based on a true story from 2014, The Beasts stars Denis Menochet and Marina Fois as Antoine and Olga, an educated French couple who moved to a small Spanish village in Galicia in order to grow and sell organic vegetables. Middle-class incomers to a remote village in Spain’s ‘wild west’ expose fear, resentment and nationalism in Rodrigo Sorogoyen’s disturbing true-crime drama
Here is a fierce, bitter tale with a flinty sharpness: partly a social-realist drama of class and xenophobia, and partly a rural noir horror, a Euro-arthouse twist on Straw Dogs or Deliverance. It’s inspired by the true story from 2010 of a middle-class hippy idealist Dutch couple who attempted to settle in the Spanish village of Santoalla in Galicia’s remote “wild west” and fell out badly with their neighbours over their gentrification plans: a row that escalated into a nightmare. It has in fact already been the subject of a documentary, Andrew Becker and Daniel Mehrer’s Santoalla, and has now been fictionalised by film-maker Rodrigo Sorogoyen.

Darren Star’s Emily in Paris debuted on Netflix in 2020 and quickly became one of the site’s most popular shows of the year. The show garnered critical acclaim and nominations for both the Emmy Award for Outstanding Comedy Series and the Golden Globe Award for Best Television Series – Musical or Comedy. Even while the show got a lot of viewers, not everyone agreed that it was funny.

Emily in Paris follows Emily as she adjusts to life in Paris and, in the process, becomes the walking embodiment of several cultural stereotypes. One deleted scene in Emily in Paris Season 1 shows Emily making another stupid mistake.

Will Smith has shared a message for those who might not want to see his new film because of his behaviour at the Oscars.
Emancipation, a new drama from Training Day director Antoine Fuqua, is the first new Smith film to be released after the actor struck Chris Rock around the face on stage at the awards ceremony in March 2022.
He hit Rock after the comedian made a joke about his wife Jada Pinkett Smith.
Since the incident, Smith, who was condemned for his actions, has apologised twice and resigned as a member of the Academy.
During the promotional trail for Emancipation, Smith was asked by journalist KevinMcCarthy what he would say to someone who does not feel “ready” to see him lead a film following the slap.
“I completely understand – if someone is not ready, I would absolutely respect that and allow them their space to not be ready,...

Oh no! Please tell us Bentley will be all right.
Winter finales almost always end with a cliffhanger to keep people talking throughout the winter hiatus. East New York Season 1 Episode 9 gave us one of the stronger ones in recent memory.
The good news: CBS has ordered an entire season of the freshman series, so we'll find out in January what Bentley's fate is. Thank goodness!
Chances are, Bentley will be okay. Cop dramas like to brush up against death, then have the police officers we know and love pull through at the last second.
Still, as cliffhangers go, this was a good one.

Until we find out exactly how Bentley is doing, we can't be 100 sure that he will pull through; that's an additional reason to tune in when East New York returns in January, not that we needed one.

The Spanish-French production The Beasts (As bestas), directed by Rodrigo Sorogoyen, takes place in a Galician village, although its central characters are a couple of French farmers, who have been living there for a couple of years, Olga and Antoine, respectively played by Marina Foïs and Denis Ménochet (the farmer who hid Shosanna and her family from the Nazis in Inglourious Basterds). In a time when cinema constantly reflects the evident xenophobia that exists in the world, The Beasts presents the classic hostility between neighbors. In this case, two Galician brothers (Luis Zahera and Diego Anido) begin to harass mainly Antoine, who in response starts to record them in order to have proof; however, he doesn’t have much success with the authorities. The Beasts stands...

Rodrigo Sorogoyen’s multi-layered thriller The Beasts nearly achieved a clean sweep of the Tokyo International Film Festival’s major awards categories Wednesday night in the Japanese capital. During a ceremony held in the city’s glitzy Ginza district, The Beasts came away with the Tokyo Grand Prix, the festival’s top honor, as well as best director honors for Sorogoyen and best actor for his star Denis Menochet.
A brooding, psychological thriller set in rural Spain, The Beasts tells the story of a cosmopolitan French couple, Antoine and Olga (Menochet and actress Marina Foïs), who settle in a small village hoping to connect with nature. Instead, their presence soon arouses hostility — and eventually, downright violence — from some of the locals. The film has been praised for its feral, even savage, portrayal of the hardscrabble realities of the majestic Galician countryside.

In Christoph Willibald Gluck’s opera “Orpheus and Eurydice,” Orpheus must travel to the underworld to reunite with his dead wife, Eurydice. To do so, he must placate the Furies, the goddesses of vengeance, and hold onto his love for his wife.
German director Kilian Riedhof had the opera in mind when adapting Antoine Leiris’ autobiographical book “You Will Not Have My Hate.” The film world premieres on Aug. 12 in Piazza Grande at the Locarno Film Festival.
The book is based on Leiris’ experiences following the murder by Islamic State jihadists of his wife, Hélène Muyal-Leiris, on Nov. 13, 2015, at the Bataclan night-club — one of 130 people killed that evening in a string of terrorist attacks across Paris.
The film begins on that fateful day with Hélène preparing food for their toddler, Melvil, and the couple discussing a holiday in Corsica that they had to abandon so Hélène could pick up some freelance work.
