IndieWire parent company Penske Media’s P-mrc Holdings has invested in SXSW, the robust set of conferences and festivals that have rocked Austin for 34 years. The partnership aligns P-mrc as a long-term partner and SXSW shareholder, with the company utilizing SXSW as an opportunity for all of its media brands.
The essence of the events, and its management, are expected to remain intact while expanding SXSW’s potential for new events and business models. SXSW and P-mrc are now developing the March 2022 event in Austin. P-mrc is a joint venture between Penske Media Corporation and MRC, whose holdings include Billboard, The Hollywood Reporter, Rolling Stone, Variety, and Vibe.
P-mrc will reportedly take a 50% stake in the business, which last hosted its physical edition in 2019. The Wall Street Journal was the first to report the news.

After South by Southwest was cancelled on Friday over concerns about the coronavirus, two of its founders told the Austin Chronicle that the film festival doesn’t have insurance to cover the cancellation.
Nick Barbaro, a co-founder of SXSW who is also the publisher of the Chronicle, told the paper that the festival does not have cancellation insurance relating to a disease outbreak or a policy that would be triggered by the city declaring a local state of disaster.
“We have a lot of insurance. However, bacterial infections, communicable diseases, viruses and pandemics are not covered,” SXSW co-founder and managing director Roland Swenson told the Chronicle.
Insurers routinely exclude communicable disease outbreaks from the cancellation policies that are offered to promoters and artists, but the disease coverage is available for an extra cost as a buy-back — something that most bands have not bothered with, but which many major promoters do take out.

The news is increasingly bleak for the founders of the South by Southwest conference, which was canceled today for the first time in its 34-year history.
Two founders of the event, which was set for March 13-22 in Austin, Texas, told The Austin Chronicle that the organization lacks insurance coverage for disease outbreaks. The festival was cancelled by city and county officials late Friday afternoon because of health concerns from the coronavirus outbreak.
SXSW co-founder Nick Barbaro – also the publisher of the Chronicle – said the its cancellation insurance does not cover a disease outbreak or the city declaring a “local state of disaster.”
His comment was backed-up by SXSW co-founder and CEO Roland Swenson, who said, “We have a lot of insurance. However, bacterial infections, communicable diseases, viruses and pandemics are not covered.”

Anyone vaguely familiar with American independent film knows about Richard Linklater. “Slacker,” “Dazed and Confused,” the sweeping “Before” trilogy and “Boyhood” are only a few of the venerated titles in the ever-innovative director’s roster. This year’s “Everybody Wants Some!!” was just the latest example of Linklater’s ability to take fun, goofy scenarios and transform them into something poignant. All the while, the filmmaker has remained in Austin, where he has built his own community of movie lovers through the Austin Film Society, the organization he founded in 1985. Linklater’s career has enough chapters to fill a film of its own, which is what co-directors Louis Black and Karen Bernstein do in “Richard Linklater: Dream is Destiny,” an overview of Linklater’s story that opens in theaters and on VOD this week.
Notably, the filmmakers behind “Dream is Destiny” are a part of the story that they capture.

Sadly on the opening day of the 30th annual South By Southwest festival, co-founder Louis Meyers has died. He was 60. Folk Alliance International Director Aengus Finnan confirmed that Meyers died in Austin on Friday. The cause of death was not immediately known. On that same day, President Obama made a historic visit to SXSW and became the first sitting U.S. president to attend the gathering. First Lady Michelle Obama is scheduled to speak on Wednesday. In 1987, Meyers, who was also a banjo player, started the interactive, music and film gathering alongside Roland Swenson, Nick Barbaro, Louis Black, Joe Rae Dimenno and Linda Owen.

Twenty-five years ago, four guys organized what they expected to be a small gathering for local musicians to perform and get some exposure. Running it from the offices of the Austin Chronicle, the four -- Louis Black, Louis Meyers, Roland Swenson and Nick Barbaro -- didn’t expect that 700 people would show up for that first fest. Since then, South By Southwest has grown into the largest annual event in Austin and one of the largest and most recognized of such festivals in the world.
In Outside Industry: The Story of SXSW, producer/director Alan Berg chronicles the rise and history of SXSW through photographs, old footage and interviews not only with the founders, but also writers Michael Corcoran and Joe Nick Patoski, Creative Director Brent Grulke, entertainer Mojo Nixon and many others.

Austin,TX – Ibm’s Super Computer, Watson, made an appearance at this year’s South by Southwest (SXSW) Interactive Technology Conference.
In the ‘What is Watson?’ panel, Dr. David Ferrucci, lead researcher and Principal Investigator for Watson/Jeopardy! delved into the reasons they decided to try Watson’s hand Jeopardy and what made it such a great first test.
Deep Qa
Ibm’s question and answer computing system has the capability to answer questions posed in natural language. When Watson looks at a question, it looks for key words and forms subquestions which it then processes like any other question.
The popular American quiz game Jeopardy, provides a good test bed for Watson’s abilities. The answer provided can be broken down into many subquestions, and once those are answered, it leads to the larger question.
Ibm hopes that this concept of Deep Qa can be applied to different industries,...

The opening words of “Outside Industry” speak volumes about the role SXSW has played in being defined by, and in turn defining, the culture of this one small part of the huge state of Texas: “The kernel of creativity that defines Austin today, that all goes back to music.”
From nothing but ego to headlines like “2,000 Acts” and “100,000 Fans” and “Sold Out” placards, SXSW has been making its mark on the music scene for a quarter century. That it also has become a showcase for film and interactive technology could not have remotely been forecast given the early ideas for the festival when a few kids borrowed $70,000 (and blew it in less than a year).

I attended my first SXSW Music festival in 1994 but began volunteering in 2000. I've been a web competition preliminary judge, crew chief for the trade shows and information booth, and a SXSW Interactive panels liaison. However, the most memorable time has been spent in the trenches of the SXSW Music Festival with Special Venues, handling line management and crowd control at film premieres and music showcases. Even now I am still awed by the sheer number of venues, bands, and attendees that seem to double every year.
Despite my involvement with SXSW, it wasn't until I watched Outside Industry: The Story of SXSW that I truly understood the birth and evolution of the largest music industry event in the world. This documentary from the Austin film, video, animation and documentary company Arts+Labor offers an intimate perspective on how four guys living on next to nothing -- Roland Swenson, Louis Black,...
