A remake of the ’90s classic “Don’t Tell Mom The Babysitter’s Dead” is coming to theaters in spring.
Simone Joy Jones, Nicole Richie and June Squibb will lead an ensemble including Jermaine Fowler (“Superior Donuts”), comic Ms. Pat, Olympian Gus Kenworthy, as well as newcomers Donielle Tremaine Hansley, Miles Fowler, Iantha Richardson and Tyriq Withers.
Like the 1991 film, “Don’t Tell Mom the Babysitter’s Dead” follows 17-year-old girl Tanya (Jones), who plans to vacation in Europe with her friends before heading to college in the fall. But her mom (Ms. Pat) decides to go to a wellness retreat in Thailand, so Tanya is forced to stay home with her siblings. When — as the title suggests — their elderly babysitter (Squibb) unexpectedly dies, Tayna gets a job working for an ambitious woman named Rose (Ritchie). As she juggles work, family and a complicated romance, Tanya navigates adulthood at the cost of her last summer of freedom.

Nearly four years have gone by since it was announced that Treehouse Pictures was developing a remake of the 1991 Christina Applegate cult classic Don’t Tell Mom the Babysitter’s Dead (watch it Here) that would be directed by Bille Woodruff (Beauty Shop and the Honey quadrilogy) from a screenplay by Chuck Hayward (Dear White People). All that was revealed about the project at the time was that it would be “a present-day retelling centered on a black family.” Then that’s the last we heard about it. Apparently it made its way through production while flying under the radar, though, because Film Ratings has revealed that the remake has already received its rating from the Motion Picture Association ratings board… and it’s a surprising one. While the original film was rated PG-13, the remake has earned an R rating for “teen drug use, language and some sexual references.”

Exclusive: Tyra Banks (America’s Next Top Model) has signed on for a role in Treehouse Pictures’ remake of Don’t Tell Mom the Babysitter’s Dead, which is heading into production in Los Angeles in July.
The original 1991 film, from director Stephen Herek, follows Sue Ellen “Swell” Crandell (Christina Applegate), a 17-year-old forced to take care of her four younger siblings after the babysitter hired by her mother dies while mom’s out of town. While the Warner Bros comedy also starring Joanna Cassidy, Keith Coogan, John Getz and Josh Charles didn’t land as a major hit, either critically or commercially, it has fostered a cult following in the decades since.
Treehouse’s remake is billed as a present-day retelling centered on a Black family. Banks will play Cassidy’s character Rose, a fashion executive at General Apparel West, who takes a chance on Swell by hiring her as an executive assistant.

Miles Teller, Shailene Woodley and William Hurt are set to star in a satirical film called “The Fence” about neighbors on both sides of the Democrat and Republican divide.
Grímur Hákonarson, an Icelandic filmmaker known for his 2015 film “Rams,” will direct “The Fence” and make his English-language debut on the project.
In the film, Teller and Woodley play a newlywed liberal couple who move in next door to an ultra-conservative neighbor and ex-marine played by Hurt. They soon become at odds with Hurt when he insists on building a 9-foot-tall fence that he believes will help him protect from terrorists.
Shane Danielsen wrote the screenplay based on a story by Hákonarson. Justin Nappi and Juliet Berman are producing for Treehouse Pictures.
ICM Partners and CAA Media Finance are handling worldwide distribution rights and are introducing “The Fence” to buyers at AFM this week. Filming is scheduled to begin in March.

Exclusive: Miles Teller (Whiplash), Golden Globe nominee Shailene Woodley (Big Little Lies) and Oscar-winner William Hurt (Kiss Of The Spider Woman) are set to star in political satire The Fence from in-demand Icelandic director Grímur Hákonarson.
The film’s fun premise sees two liberal newlyweds increasingly at odds with their ultra-conservative ex-marine neighbor over a nine-foot-tall fence that he insists on building to keep his home safe from potential terrorists.
ICM Partners and CAA Media Finance are representing worldwide distribution rights and launching the project this week for the virtual AFM. Interestingly there’s no international sales firm attached. Filming is slated to get underway next March.
The film’s premise is fertile ground right now given the polarized political climate and the casting should make it an attractive prospect for buyers or financiers.

As the big Hollywood studios evolve, consolidate and get bigger, the road to success for indie production houses like Treehouse Pictures is to somehow artfully fill in the space between the big-budget blockbusters, super hero flicks and IP-driven franchises. This year has seen several indie films underperform at the box office, including Stx Entertainment’s “The Best of Enemies,” Amazon’s glitzy Sundance purchase, “Late Night,” and Annapurna’s “Booksmart.” But despite the otherwise disappointing year for indie films, there remains the belief that there’s room for more. Treehouse Pictures President and founder Justin Nappi (pictured above), and head of development Juliet Berman talked to TheWrap about the challenges of operating in today’s market and how indie production studios can stand apart. Treehouse Pictures acquired the 2010 John Grisham novel The Confession, and will develop it as a film. The author and David Gernert will serve as EPs with Treehouse Pictures’ Justin Nappi and Juliet Berman producing. Novel tells the story of Donte Drumm, a young black man whose own forced confession put him on death row for the rape and murder of a high school cheerleader, and whose execution is scheduled in four days time. It’s a race against the clock to exonerate him after a man walks into a priest’s office and confesses to the crime from ten years earlier.
“With The Confession, we saw a chance to create an edge-of-your-seat thriller about injustice and the value of life at a time when many of the themes are so relevant,” said Justin Nappi, President, Treehouse Pictures. “We are excited to find the right team to bring this novel to life.

Good news, Set It Up fans (aka everyone who's seen Set It Up). Zoey Deutch and Glen Powell are teaming up for a new movie along with the filmmakers behind the popular Netflix romantic comedy, which premiered last June. It's not a sequel to the rom-com - which also stars Lucy Liu and Taye Diggs - but we have no doubt it will deliver on all of our heartwarming-meets-funny needs. The Hollywood Reporter confirmed that it's tentatively titled Most Dangerous Game, and it will begin production in early 2020.
"While it was clear that audiences were clamoring for a sequel, we are excited by the thought of creating a new, distinct film that explores different romantic comedy tropes while still being anchored in everything that we loved about the first movie," producer Justin Nappi said. Set It Up writer Katie Silberman, who also wrote Booksmart, will produce the film as well.

While romantic comedies ruled the box office in the ’80s, ’90s, and early 2000s, the past few years have been rough for fans of the genre. But viewers found a bright spot recently with Netflix’s buzzy film “Set It Up.”
Starring Zoey Deutch, Glen Powell, Lucy Liu, and Taye Diggs, the story of two overworked New York assistants who set up their high-maintenance bosses in an attempt to get some free time and end up — surprise! — falling in love themselves has become a hit for the streamer, and provided a modern twist on the familiar rom-com conventions.
In their race to greenlight superhero tentpoles and sequels, studios haven’t been big on producing original romantic comedies. “The Big Sick” showed there’s an appetite for a different approach to the genre, but 2015’s “Trainwreck” is the only rom-com to gross over $50 million in the past six years.
