Movie director and Oscar-winner James Cameron managed to break his own box-office records when he delivered Avatar to the big screen.
But before it hit theaters, Cameron used Brendan Fraser’s popular hit as a sort of guinea pig for Avatar.
Brendan Fraser originally thought the script for ‘Journey to the Center of the Earth’ was ‘daft’ Brendan Fraser | Axelle/Bauer-Griffin/FilmMagic
Fraser once had a starring role in the sci-fi feature Journey to the Center of the Earth. The movie was based on a short story by French novelist Jules Verne. In the adaptation, Fraser played a professor who attempts to escape a cavern he finds himself trapped inside of. On his way out, Fraser’s professor encounters several creatures and obstacles that threaten his life.
Fraser admitted that when he first received the script, it was a concept he didn’t think much of.
“Verne was arguably science fiction’s creator.

Journey to the Center of the Earth is a movie that will keep every sci-fiction lover glued to a seat. Although the movie was released as early as July 2008, it is still an exciting watch for 2022. Produced as an American 3D science fantasy action-adventure film, It was directed by Eric Brevig and starred Brendan Fraser (in the lead role), Josh Hutcherson, Anita Brien, and Seth Meyers. Does the earth have a center? Where does it lie? Could it be between Europe and Asia or maybe Iceland and Bolivia? Only one man knew the answer and penned his findings

In the '80s, Dutch director Paul Verhoeven came to America and started churning out a series of notable sci-fi adventures. "Robocop" established him as a distinct voice within the genre, and then Arnold Schwarzenegger tapped him to direct the long-gestating "Total Recall." During that time, he also managed to gain a reputation for his no-nonsense approach to filmmaking.
That was certainly the case by 1989 when it came time to shoot "Total Recall," a retelling of the short story "We Can Remember It for You Wholesale" by Philip K. Dick. Verhoeven assembled a talented cast to tell the story of Douglas Quaid (Schwarzenegger), a construction worker who, plagued by dreams of Mars, opts to have memories of the planet implanted in his head, only to find out the dreams were actual memories. It's all a bit confusing, really, but it proved successful despite its gargantuan (for the time) budget of 65 million.

Beginning with the publication of Whitley Streiber's book "Communion: A True Story" in 1987, alien abduction lore began to spread in earnest through the minds of the public. Streiber's book, and the growing popularity of alien imagery, were part of a cultural obsession with extraterrestrial kidnappings which broke open in earnest with the debut of "The X-Files" in 1993. Embedded in the wave of pop alien lore were tales of Men in Black, sinister government agents who wore black suits, ties, and hats, and who would arrive at the doorsteps of alien abductees, hypnotically intoning that they needed to keep their abduction a secret.
By 1997, when Barry Sonnenfeld's hit film "Men in Black" was released in theaters, such previously staid and hushed lore was transformed into broad comedy. "Men in Black" was about, essentially, Earth's immigration office, assembled to document space alien immigrants visiting or moving to our planet. Agents K...

Last month marked the 25th anniversary of Men in Black, arguably one of the most influential science fiction films in blockbuster history. That release not only added a major genre franchise to the table—one which would continue to have success decades later—but it also showcased that sci-fi and buddy comedies could co-exist as one. It pushed the industry forward in regards to the marriage of visual and practical effects, and helped to boost a rising star in Will Smith. But that first movie could have gone down a very different path, one that might have seen it lose some of its shine.
Not only was the first script for Men in Black wildly different, but changes were eventually made to remove a whole subplot from the final film. Watching it back, audiences would be forgiven for never noticing that anything was missing. But for those in the trenches of the production,...

Justin Timberlake on the Oscars' Red Carpet Justin Timberlake at the Academy Awards The Social Network actor Justin Timberlake arrives at the 83rd Academy Awards, which took place on Sunday, Feb. 27, at the Kodak Theatre in Hollywood. At the ceremony, Timberlake and Black Swan actress Mila Kunis introduced the nominees – and eventual winners – in the animation categories. Throughout the proceedings, he pretended to be the elusive Banksy, whose Exit Through the Gift Shop was a Best Documentary Feature contender. The joke fell mostly flat, but Timberlake actually elicited some laughs when he imitated three-time Oscar-nominated veteran Kirk Douglas*, who mercilessly stretched the Best Supporting Actress announcement into what seemed like hours. Admittedly, Douglas was funny. (The winner in that particular category turned out to be Melissa Leo for David O. Russell's The Fighter.) As announced by the Justin Timberlake-Mila Kunis duo, the Best Animated Short Film was Shaun Tan...

Warner Bros has hired Jay Chandrasekhar (Dukes of Hazzard, Super Troopers) to re-write the script and direct the upcoming "Yogi Bear" sequel. Last year, it was announced that the writers of the original film were going to provide the script for the follow-up. The first "Yogi Bear" was released in 3D back in 2010. It was directed by Eric Brevig and starred Dan Aykroyd, Justin Timberlake, Tom Cavanagh, Anna Faris and Andy Daly. The movie went on to gross $201 million worldwide on a $80 million budget. It wasn't considered a strong performer, but it apparently earned enough to get a sequel.

Jay Chandrasekhar, one of the founding members of the Broken Lizard comedy troupe, has put his name on raunchy comedies like The Babymakers and Super Troopers, and has directed episodes of cult TV shows like Arrested Development and Community. So what does a guy with a comedy resume like that do to hit the big time? Why, direct the sequel to a critically reviled animated film, of course! Ok, maybe that isn't exactly the obvious next step. And yet, Chandrasekhar is doing it anyway, signing a deal to direct Yogi Bear 2 for Fox, according to Deadline. The first film, released in 2010 and directed by Journey to the Center of the Earth's Eric Brevig, made just over $200 million worldwide, despite a 13% Rotten Tomatoes score and endless eye rolls from most adult moviegoers. Though Chandrasekhar has directed one studio film of a similar scale-- The Dukes of Hazzard-- it's hard...

Last night Yahoo debuted the trailer for Journey 2: The Mysterious Island, the second Brendan Fraser franchise Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson has honed in on, this time a sequel to Fraser's 2008 3D adventure, Journey to the Center of the Earth. The film, which is loosely based on Jules Verne's "The Mysterious Island," finds The Rock playing stepfather to Sean (the returning Josh Hutcherson) and the two have to team up when Sean receives a coded distress signal from his grandfather on a mysterious island where no island should exist. Together with a helicopter pilot and his daughter (Vanessa Hudgens), they set out to find the island, rescue grandpa and escape before seismic shockwaves force the island under the sea and bury its treasures forever. The film will again be released in 3D and according to the poster IMAX 3D, which probably means the smaller, digital IMAX screens as it...

Just when you thought Dwayne Johnson was starting to refocus his career on R-rated action movies, he goes and does... this. Journey 2: The Mysterious Island is the sequel to the Brendan Fraser 3D adventure Journey to the Center of the Earth, and aside from the improved cast it doesn't seem like the budget has really increased. It essentially looks like a low rent Jurassic Park knockoff with gratuitous 3D effects. Brendan Fraser is not returning because director of the first film, Eric Brevig, had scheduling conflicts and apparently Fraser just couldn't see another movie working without him. Makes perfect sense. The story has shifted the focus to be on Josh Hutcherson's character Sean, who teams up with his mom's boyfriend (Dwayne Johnson) to find his grandfather (Michael Caine), who supposedly disappeared while exploring a mythical lost island. Luis Guzmán also serves as the comic relief while Vanessa Hudgens plays the love interest.

Release Date: Jan. 17, 2012
Price: Blu-ray $44.95
Studio: Warner Home Video
Journey to the Center of the Earth was released in 3D in theaters and on anaglyph 3D (with those lovely red/green glasses) on Blu-ray and DVD back in 2008, but this release is for the better Blu-ray 3D.
Based on the novel by Jules Verne, the 2008 science-fiction movie stars Brendan Fraser (Furry Vengeance) as a scientist who, with his nephew (Josh Hutcherson, Cirque du Freak: The Vampire’s Assistant), traces the last journey of his missing brother. They travel to Iceland and find a guide (Anita Briem, Dylan Dog: Dead of Night), but after getting trapped in a cave, they fall into a hole that leads them to a lost world in — you guessed it — the center of the Earth.
Directed by Eric Brevig (Yogi Bear), the PG-rated action adventure film Journey to the Center of the Earth grossed $101.7 million when it was in theaters.

I've been sitting on this news for about three days now and finally decided to post it. I'm just not into the films of Brenden Fraser these days. The actor is currently developing a 3D version of the classic story William Tell, yes the guy who mastered shooting arrows off peoples heads.
The movie was original supposed to be directed by Doctor Who's Nick Hurran, but he is no longer on the project and has been replaced by Eric Brevig, the man who directed Fraser in Journey to the Center of the Earth 3D. The plan is to shoot it in the style Pirates of the Caribbean and Sherlock Holmes. I can gaurentee this movie wont be good as either of those.
Yeah, so I'm not really that all excited about the movie, I'm not impressed with the talent and I just can't help but think that this is...

Back in May, we heard that Brendan Fraser would play William Tell [1] in a 3D film to be directed by Doctor Who veteran Nick Hurran. The movie is still moving forward, but one thing has changed: Hurran will no longer direct. Instead, Eric Brevig, who directed Fraser in Journey to the Center of the Earth 3D, will helm William Tell 3D, the film that is planned to shoot in the styles of -- what else? -- Pirates of the Caribbean and Guy Ritchie's Sherlock Holmes. Here's the official synopsis via Archlight Films [2]: In an age of oppression and tyranny, Tell (Fraser) is forced to rise up against those who threaten his lands and family. The governor of Switzerland lies dying, and Austrian Hermann Gessler is waiting to take his place. Try as he might, Tell cannot keep himself out of the conflict that ensues, and soon finds his...

Brendan Fraser and his Journey to the Center of the Earth director Eric Brevig are reteaming for William Tell 3D, a historical family action drama. William Tell is probably a name that sounds familiar, maybe you recall he has something to do with shooting an arrow into an apple on someone's head. Well, he's a big deal whose name has stuck around because the legend has it that back in his day he didn't bow down to a representative of the King of Austria. As punishment for his insolance, the royal guy ordered William Tell to do the nearly impossible -- shoot an apple on top of his own son's head. Tell put two arrows in his quiver (bag that holds the arrows) and then shoots the arrow straight into the apple, therefore, saving his own son's life. The royal guy then asked why he had Two arrows in his quiver.

Director Eric Brevig And Fraser To Inflict More Fun On The Whole Family We see the logic behind harnessing Brendan Fraser's goofball amiability for toothless family-oriented "adventure" films, but, man, we wish the guy could catch a break outside of this particular ghetto. However his more recent forays into thriller or drama territory ("Extraordinary Measures" anyone? Anyone? Really? No one?) have fared poorly, and while he's no guarantee of success even with a family film ("Furry Vengeance," "Dudley Do-right"), it seems to be the one genre where he can consistently get hired. And this isn't changing--he's next attached to "Tell…...

They previously teamed for their solid if bastardised 3D adaptation of Jules Verne's "Journey to the Center of the Earth". Now director Eric Brevig and actor Brendan Fraser are re-teaming to take on another classic tale - "William Tell" reports Deadline
Brevig ("Yogi Bear") replaces Nick Hurran on the $27 million 3D historical family action adventure, the story follows the legend of expert marksman Tell who was arrested for not bowing to the hat of Hermann Gessler, the newly appointed Austrian reeve of the Habsburg emperors.
Tell shot an apple off his son’s head to win his freedom and later assassinated Gessler. His defiance sparked a rebellion which eventually led to the formation of the Swiss Confederation.
Chad and Evan Law are presently polishing their script. Shooting kicks off mid-March at the Castel Studios in Romania and on location in Switzerland.

Hey, so remember that 3D William Tell movie starring Brendan Fraser we talked about a few months back? No? That.s probably because plenty of far more important things have happened since that news broke like. you got a couple haircuts and finally tried that new Indian restaurant you always drive by. Well there seems to have been a development in this project. Deadline is reporting that William Tell: 3D, wow that really is a thing, will now be directed by Eric Brevig. Brevig will be replacing Nick Hurran who was previously attached to direct. Brevig previously directed Fraser in 2008.s Journey to the Center of the Earth and is a former effects supervisor for films like Total Recall, Men in Black, and The Day After Tomorrow. The film is slated to begin filming in March of next year in Romania, and has suddenly seen its budget increase to $27 million.

Eric Brevig has signed on to direct the upcoming family adventure movie William Tell 3D starring Brendan Fraser, replacing previous director Nick Hurran (AMC’s The Prisioner mini-series) [Deadline]. The movie, which begins shooting in Romania next Spring, will follow Fraser as the famous historical figure who was forced to shoot an apple placed on his son’s head with an arrow because he defied a potentate of the Hapsburg monarch. Tell’s defiant act, and subsequent victory to boot, lead to a revolution that eventually resulted in the formation of Switzerland, a country that loves its watches almost as much as it loves its chocolate.
Fraser and Brevig are no strangers to each other, having worked together in 2009′s Journey to the Center of the Earth. Brevig also helmed last year’s Yogi Bear, another 3D movie, so it’s safe to say he’s familiar with the technology although...

Exclusive: Eric Brevig has been set to direct Brendan Fraser in William Tell: 3D, the historical family action adventure that will be shot next spring in Romania. Brevig replaces Nick Hurran. Brevig previously directed Fraser in the 3D hit Journey to the Center of the Earth, and also helmed Yogi Bear. Brevig is more than capable of shooting the splitting of an apple in 3D; he graduated to director from the position of visual effects supervisor on such films as Total Recall, Pearl Harbor, Men in Black and The Day After Tomorrow. Producer Todd Moyer said that he sparked to the idea of reteaming Fraser and Brevig. “Family action adventure is exactly what Brendan and Eric do best,” he said. “Eric’s skills and experience will make this film compete with any studio film.” Because Hurran dropped out, the film is now eyeing a mid-March 2012 start in Castel Studios...

Ok, let’s lay our cards and famous green hat & tie combo on the table and be honest – Yogi Bear wasn’t ever going to realistically win any prizes for excellence in film making.
A live action adaptation was always on the cards for the “smarter than the average” bear as dollar signs rolled into the eyes of big wig producers, but you can’t help but feel a fully animated foray into the world of Jellystone Park would’ve been more fruitful. Starring the CGI’d Yogi and his faithful sidekick Boo Boo armed with the voices of Dan Aykroyd and Justin Timberlake respectively; nothing screams hidden gem about this limp and quickly forgettable affair.
We join the film with a stressed Ranger Smith (Tom Cavanagh) who must deal with Yogi’s daily picnic basket theft attempts – has he never heard of a tranquiliser gun? To add to his woe,...

Adapting a popular Marvel/DC superhero to the big screen is not an easy task for filmmakers, as most of the movies made recently alternate from superb to dire in equal measures. Try doing the same thing to an equally popular cartoon character and the end results usually vary from below average to downright inept. One only has to look at the cinema versions of Scooby Doo and The Flintstones to see how bad they can be presented on the big screen, although they were successful enough to produce even worse sequels.
Of the Hanna-Barbara cartoon characters that regularly appeared on children’s television (the list includes Huckleberry Hound, Touché Turtle and Lippy the Lion), Yogi Bear remains the best loved among kids of a certain decade (or two!). Such was his popularity, he even had his own feature film - Hey There, It’s Yogi Bear (1964) - and a...

Stars: Dan Ackroyd, Justin Timberlake, Anna Faris, Tom Cavanagh, T.J. Miller | Written by Jeffrey Ventimilia, Joshua Sternin | Directed by Eric Brevig
Yogi Bear, who made his first appearance in 1958 has been a perennial favourite in the Hanna-Barbera canon ever since. Starring in his first non-tv movie since 1964, Yogi is now voiced by Ghostbusters star Dan Aykroyd and his companion Boo-Boo is voiced by pop star and Social Network player, Justin Timberlake. Anna Faris co-stars, with Tom Cavanagh as the long-suffering Ranger Smith, who finds Jellystone Park threatened with closure, with Yogi’s antics poised either to save the day or ruin it.
Despite my feelings of nostalgia for Yogi and Boo-Boo, I was initially slow to warm to the film, which lacks much of the charm of the original cartoons, much like the similar live action Scooby Doo films.

Face it, kids (or former kids), sooner or later Hollywood will get around to making a live-action/part-cg movie out of all your favorite kiddie shows. Consider: “Alvin and the Chipmunks”, “The Smurfs”, and now, “Yogi Bear”. It’s a good thing, then, that I was never a diehard “Yogi Bear” fan, and it’s because of that lack of attachment on my part that I don’t really mind Eric Brevig’s “Yogi Bear”, now available on Blu-ray Combo Pack, DVD, On Demand and for Download from Warner Bros. Pictures. Everyone’s favorite pic-a-nic basket-stealing bear brings his meal-mooching ways to movies in this live-action/CG-animated adventure starring Dan Aykroyd as the voice of Jellystone Park’s famed troublemaker Yogi Bear and Justin Timberlake as the voice of Yogi’s faithful pal Boo Boo. Jellystone has been losing business, so conniving Mayor Brown has decided to shut it down and sell the land.

A look at what's new on DVD today:
"Meskada" (2010)
Directed by Josh Sternfeld
Released by Anchor Bay Entertainment
When this thriller premiered at Tribeca this past spring, Alison Willmore wrote, "the second film from writer/director Josh Sternfeld ("Winter Solstice") has ambitions reaching beyond being a straightforward police procedural," though critics, including her, were mixed about the end result. Nick Stahl and Rachel Nichols star as small-town sleuths who investigate a botched home invasion case that claims the life of a young child in an affluent community and enflames class divisions when the main suspects are from the poorer community nearby. Grace Gummer, Meryl Streep's second daughter to go into the family profession, makes her film debut.
"Anywhere USA" (2008)
Directed by Chusy Haney-Jardine
Released by Cinevolve Studios
Winner of a Spirit of Independence prize at the 2008 Sundance Film Festival, Chusy Haney-Jardine's collection of three comic vignettes involves a...

Matt casts a wry look over this year’s Oscar nominations, and provides a few predictions for the night’s winners...
It's that time of year again. Oscar season is upon us. And what a special time it is. A time when we can get together with the family to speculate on what people we don't know think about films that, for the most part, we haven't seen.
It's all subtitled masterpieces about sexually confused old men with 19-year-old girlfriends that spend all their time walking while looking thoughtful (here's a hint, filmmakers: books are for reading, films are for seeing at).
All the while, Michael Bay continues to be shunned, year after year.
Then there's the red carpet. The pre-Oscar shows mean that we can marvel over the latest wonderworks from the best that the worlds of fashion and plastic surgery have to offer. We've now reached a point where,...

True Grit (15)
(Joel & Ethan Coen, 2010, Us) Jeff Bridges, Hailee Steinfeld, Matt Damon, Josh Brolin, Barry Pepper. 110 mins
The Coens surprise everyone by not making a Coens movie, but their celebrated attention to dialogue, landscape, casting, period detail and just about every other aspect of film-making gets this well past the "why are you even doing this?" point. Steinfeld's smart-mouthed little avenger and Bridges's un-Wayneish old buzzard share our sympathies, as well as the all-important Grit, and even if the result is almost a straightahead western, it's a superior one.
Never Let Me Go (12A)
(Mark Romanek, 2010, UK/Us) Carey Mulligan, Andrew Garfield, Keira Knightley. 104 mins
With a top cast and a story that's not about royals, it's a shame this bold, new Britpic is so depressing. The setting is a boarding school in an alternative Britain (best not to spoil the twist – the movie does that itself), where three friends struggle against the status quo,...

More importantly however, was the film. Yogi Bear, who made his first appearance in 1958 has been a perennial favourite in the Hanna-Barbera canon ever since. Starring in his first non-tv movie since 1964, Yogi is now voiced by Ghostbusters star Dan Aykroyd...

Warner Bros. have just sent us thirteen new images from Yogi Bear – a film whose marketing seems to be getting under my skin, somehow I’ve been persuaded that the film might not be that bad! Argh!
Jellystone Park has been losing business, so greedy Mayor Brown (Daly) decides to shut it down and sell the land. That means families will no longer be able to experience the natural beauty of the outdoors — and, even worse, Yogi (Aykroyd) and Boo Boo (Timberlake) will be tossed out of the only home they’ve ever known. Faced with his biggest challenge ever, Yogi must prove that he really is “smarter than the average bear” as he and Boo Boo join forces with their old nemesis Ranger Smith (Cavanagh) to find a way to save Jellystone Park from closing forever.

Yep, the success of Yogi Bear has prompted Hollywood to look at not just making a sequel to Eric Brevig’s film, but at other classic Hanna Barbara toons. What’s Playing is hearing that Huckleberry Hound is the “most likely” classic that will be heading to the big-screen. Huckleberry hound featured a blue that spoke with a southern accent, but with a sweet personality. The show was popular in the 60s, and was even the first animated show to win an Emmy. May be they could get Larry the Cable Guy to voice the actor?...

You would think that adding 3D to almost any movie would make it better. Let me be the first to tell you… this is not the case in Alpha And Omega!
