Hostel is heading to the small screen! Celebrated actor Paul Giamatti is gearing up to star in a TV series adaptation of Eli Roth‘s notoriously gruesome Hostel. A Modern Adaptation from Familiar Faces The project sees Eli Roth, alongside producers Chris Briggs and Mike Fleiss, returning for what they’re calling an ‘elevated thriller’ and a ‘reinvention’ of their infamous horror franchise. The show, now in development with Fifth Season, aims to bring a fresh take nearly two decades after the original film’s release. The iconic first installment revolved around three backpackers whose fateful trip to Slovakia took a nightmarish turn.

Pack up yer bags and steady your stomachs, gorehounds — we're heading back to Hostel! After a jaunt into family-friendly horror fare with 2018's The House With A Clock In Its Walls, director Eli Roth returned to his bloody roots last year with splatter-filled slasher Thanksgiving. And now, with his hotly anticipated videogame adaptation Borderlands' summer release fast approaching, Roth is already hard at work on his next project — a small-screen take on the cult torture-porn franchise that secured his horror icon status. And did we mention the series will star The Holdovers' Paul Giamatti?
As first reported by THR, Paul Giamatti has closed a deal to star in Roth's TV take on the Hostel franchise, a modern adaptation of the films described as both an "elevated thriller" and also a "reinvention". Promisingly, the show — which will reunite co-writer and director Roth with Hostel collaborators Chris Briggs and Mike Fleiss — is coming from Fifth Season,...

When Paul Giamatti said he wanted to "do more horror," we're not sure anyone would have predicted this!
While doing the press rounds to promote his acclaimed comedy drama, The Holdovers, last year, the recent Academy Award-nominee expressed a desire to star in a horror project.
“Horror. I’d like to do more horror. I love horror,” he said when asked what type of movie he'd like to work on next. "I like The Texas Chainsaw Massacre a lot. I love horror. Love it!” When the interviewer was a taken aback that the well-respected actor is such a Chainsaw fan, Giamatti said: “Great movie! It’s a great movie. No, no, no, no, no, it’s a great movie, it’s a beautiful movie.”

Paul Giamatti will star in a TV version of Eli Roth’s grisly Hostel franchise. Both Roth and the films’ original producers will be involved in the new series.
A gold star to anyone who saw this coming.
Paul Giamatti, of Billions and Big Fat Liar fame, as well as his collaborations with Alexander Payne including Sideways and this year’s wonderful drama The Holdovers (pictured), is starring in a television version of Eli Roth’s Hostel, which is not a sentence I expected to type today.
It seems this collaboration has been on the cards for some time. Giamatti told Entertainment Weekly in a 2013 interview that “Eli was shooting Hostel in Prague and I was shooting The Illusionist and I met him. We talked about me actually killing somebody in that movie but it never panned out”.

"And when Alexander saw the breadth of his domain, he wept," as the saying goes, "for there were no more horror movies to bring back as a modern revival." Hmm, that's not exactly right, but you're picking up what I'm laying down here. Horror continues to be an industry mainstay and, when it works, it's been a pillar of consistent box office profits and viewership ratings. So, in that light, it's no surprise that Hollywood would dig into its bag of tricks and come up with yet another relatively popular IP to revive all over again for old fans and newcomers alike. In this case, the revival series in question also comes with quite an interesting little factoid that could've led to famous character actor Paul Giamatti joining the "Hostel" franchise almost 20 years ago.

Paul Giamatti has signed on to star in a television adaptation of Eli Roth’s horror franchise “Hostel.”
The project is in development at Fifth Season, the studio behind “Severance,” and does not yet have a distributor attached. Roth is set to direct and write with original franchise producer Chris Briggs. The two of them will also executive produce alongside “Hostel” alum Mike Fleiss.
“Hostel,” which premiered in theaters in 2005 and spawned two sequels, followed American tourists who are convinced by a stranger to travel from Barcelona to Slovakia, where they are then taken captive by an underground organization that kidnaps people for rich clients to torture and kill.
The series is envisioned as a “modern adaptation” and “reinvention” of the low-budget horror franchise, the first installment of which collected $82 million atop a $4.8 million budget. The less lucrative sequel, 2007’s “Hostel: Part II,” still raked in more than $35 million against a $10.2 million budget.

Update: A month after the Paul Giamatti / Hostel TV series rumor popped up, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed that it’s actually happening! Giamatti is set to play “a key role” in the Hostel TV show, which is said to reinvent the franchise as an “elevated thriller.” The series is coming our way from Fifth Season, the studio behind Apple’s Severance, and has Eli Roth, Chris Briggs, and Mike Fleiss on board as executive producers. Roth and Briggs are also writing the project, which Roth will be directing.
In 2013, Giamatti revealed to Entertainment Weekly that he almost made a cameo in the original Hostel: “Eli was shooting Hostel in Prague and I was shooting The Illusionist and I met him. We talked about me actually killing somebody in that movie but it never panned out.” Now it looks like Giamatti and Roth are going to make up for lost time.

In one of our recent Wtf episodes, we covered the eye-gouging, eastern European-set filthy shenanigans of Eli Roth’s nicely messed up torture porn movie, Hostel. The film helped pave the way for the exploitation horror subgenre to thrive in the early 2000s, and followed a group of American tourists who get a lot more than they bargained for during a trip to the lovely picturesque country of Slovakia. Poor lads. All they wanted was some promiscuous sex with hot European ladies, but they weren’t counting on a shady organization dishing out decapitation and slit throats, as a side dish to the fornication. The movie, according to the tagline, was ‘based upon true events’ and whether or not you believe this claim, it’s nothing if not brutally demented in parts. So, like any other horror movie that manages to whip up a frenzy with critics and fans alike,...

It was back on Friday, September 17, 2010, that I flew to Detroit, Michigan, for a set visit of director Scott Spiegel’s then-filming Hostel Part III (which releases direct-to-dvd via Sony Pictures Home Entertainment on December 27th). As my flight descended toward Detroit Metro and I looked through the plane’s windows at the city below, the metropolis seemed a sadly appropriate location to film the third installment in the historically bleak Hostel series.
The gray skies and dormant smokestacks and brick buildings set beneath it effortlessly communicated the economically ravaged Slovakia in which the preceding films took place, and as I would find, my set visit would touch me deeply, more for the ravaged state of this once great American city than the blood the filmmaker would spill in it, however.

December 27th will see the DVD and Digital release of Hostel 3 through Sony Pictures Home Entertainment. Eli Roth is no longer at the helm, instead Scott Spiegel has moved up from his Executive Producer status on the first two movies to take the director’s chair on this second sequel. If you’ve seen his 1989 movie Intruder, which is set for a Blu-ray release also in December and we covered here, then you will know that he is not a man to shy away from spreading a little claret across the screen. The action has also been moved away from Eastern Europe and dropped into the glitz that is Las Vegas. So just remember boys and girls that whatever happens in Vegas is bound to be very, very painful.

I've never been a big fan of the Hostel films, but I know there are a lot of people that love watching people being brutally tortured. Just so you know Hostel creator Eli Roth had nothing to do with this third film. Hostel III was directed by Scott Spiegel from a screenplay by Michael D. Weiss. I don't think I'll be watching the movie, I'm not feeling lucky with it.
Synopsis:
High stakes gambling takes on a sinister new meaning in this third chapter of the terrifying Hostel series. While attending a bachelor party in Las Vegas, four friends are enticed by two sexy escorts to join them at a private party way off the Strip. Once there, they are horrified to find themselves the subjects of a perverse game of torture, where members of the Elite Hunting Club are hosting the most sadistic show in town.
The DVD hits the street on December 27th.

Despite Eli Roth washing his hands of the next instalment in the Hostel series, director Scott Spiegel (From Dusk 'Til Dawn 2) and producer Chris Briggs (Hostel: Part 2) are giving the torture porn junkies another hit. The next chapter of the franchise debuts on unrated DVD this Christmas from Sony Pictures Home Entertainment. Hostel: Part 3 is said to contain even more disturbing torture scenes than its predecessors. Set in Sin City the notorious Elite Hunting Club are back to their old tricks. Human torture has been transferred into...

Hostel: Part III is the first film in the series to not have Eli Roth directing. Instead, actor, writer and director Scott Spiegel (Evil Dead II) will take up the torch in this straight-to-dvd launch. Raw Nerve will again produce, with Roth taking a secondary role on this film as producer. Now, the first trailer is available for the film, which shows several groom's men out on the town in Las Vegas. Sin City turns out to be a little more dangerous when the city's bloodsport community comes out at night to play.
The Elite Hunting Club is back and this time they offer torture in an underground arena where the most fantastic kill wins the money. This title will release on DVD December 27th and take a look at the franchise that defined the term torture porn back in 2005 with this sadistic trailer.
Release Date: December 27th, 2011 (DVD).
Director: Scott Spiegel.

I haven't talked about this film much as it's been in the pipeline for seems like ages but only recently got the go ahead to start filming. Based on a controversial crime novel by Stefán Máni Black Curse revolves around the Icelandic underworld and is based on actual events that took place in the 90's as the author spent time riding along with thugs and generally bad people to get his material. Director Oskar Thor Axelsson makes his feature film debut based on his own script. The film is being produced by Zik Zak the people behind The Good Heart and Noi Albinoi along with production outfit Filmus and executive produced by Nicolas Winding Refn and Hostel's Chris Briggs and is slated to be released...

Activist Ric O'Barry has been crusading against dolphin captivity for more than forty years, but it was the Oscar-winning documentary 'The Cove' that really put him and his cause in the public eye. The 2009 film depicts a mission in which O'Barry and a team of fellow preservationists went to Japan to capture footage of dolphin slaughter and raise general awareness of an illegal fishing operation in Taiji, Wakayama. Since then he has also had a mini-series on Animal Planet in which he returned to the titular Taiji cove and also exposed a similar dolphin trade in the Solomon Islands. Now according to Deadline, the former trainer and actor will get to have his whole life unveiled on the big screen in a biopic from 'Poseidon' producers Mike Fleiss and Chris Briggs along with Ric's son, Lincoln O'Barry, who produced and directed that Animal Planet series.

Exclusive: Mike Fleiss, who created The Bachelor and other reality hits before branching into films, has acquired feature film rights to the life story of Richard O'Barry. He is the dolphin preservationist and the central figure in the Oscar-winning documentary The Cove. O'Barry started his career training the dolphins that starred in the TV show Flipper. When one of them died in captivity--and maybe had lost its will to live--o'Barry began a life long quest to free dolphins from captivity. He came to the forefront in the documentary, in which director Louie Psihoyos covertly filmed the carnage in a cove in the small former whaling village of Taijii. Fisherman annually herd thousands of dolphins into the cove, and slaughter them in a frenzy that actually makes the waters run blood red. The film created a global uproar. Fleiss and Lincoln O'Barry will produce under Next Films and BayRock Media, and...

In the second part of the two interviews I was invited to take part in for the promotion of The Last Exorcism, I met the film’s producer, Eli Roth. Writer, director and sometime actor, Roth is laid back (both figuratively and quite literally), sharply dressed and surprisingly handsome in person. As opposed to director Daniel Stamm’s enthusiastic joy for talking about his movie, Roth is more reserved, although clearly in his element – the filmmaker evidently knows not only how to direct a scene but also an interview. He feeds us information at his own pace, casually displays his encyclopaedic knowledge of horror and sets himself up nicely for some witty jokes. Roth was a compelling orator, as is hopefully evident below.
