Toronto’s Hot Docs film festival has decided that Canadian media producer Bonnie Thompson will be the recipient of this year’s prestigious Don Haig Award. Thompson is the producer behind Cam Christiansen’s “Echo of Everything,” a feature length documentary exploring the power of music, which will have its world premiere at Hot Docs’ 30th-anniversary festival, on now until May 7.
The Don Haig Award is presented to an outstanding Canadian independent producer with a feature-length film at the festival, with the recipient being selected by a jury of independent filmmakers. The award recognizes creative vision and entrepreneurship, as reflected in the recipient’s body of work, as well as a track record of mentoring emerging Canadian filmmakers. Thompson will be presented with a $5,000 cash prize, courtesy of the Don Haig Foundation.

Like filmmakers before him who have crafted works expressing the fears and anxieties surrounding Y2K (Wong Kar-wai, David Fincher, and Gary Burns spring to mind first), Alex Ross Perry’s “Alex” seems to fear 2012. Absent is John Cusack in the Raya Martin- and Mark Peranson-directed La última película, a send-up of experimental cinema. If there’s anything to be weary […]...

For this week, Telefilm Canada had announced the 27 films that it will support for 2010. Among these films, 17 will be in English. Of course, rest assured: some of the films will have a commercial nature and some will be low-budget independent films. The following is the list of films.
Beat the World (Ontario & Nunavut Region; Btw Productions Inc.; Executive Producers: Alfons Adetuyi, Amos Adetuyi and Robert Adetuyi; Writer/Director: Robert Adetuyi; Distributor: E1 Films Canada Inc.; Telefilm investment: $3.2 million) takes a look at three dance crews - one Latin American, one European and one from Windsor, Ontario – as they prepare to do battle at the international Beat the World competition in Detroit. Along the way, they struggle with personal issues ranging from gambling debt, bad break-ups and their own egos. In the final showdown to become world champions lifelong hopes, dreams and even lives, are at stake.

In his opening remarks before the screening of his new film, Leslie, My Name is Evil, writer-director Reginald Harkema suggested to the audience, "think of this movie as a trip."
Boy is it ever.
Steeped in hallucinogenic imagery and walking the fine line of absurdity, Lesliel is an outrageous and not very subtle commentary on American society. And it's winking from the very first scene.
It's the fourth film from Vancouver's Harkema, who is now living in Toronto. As with the previous three, this one also is about the messy connections between boys and girls. But this one is both a romantic comedy and courtroom drama, set during the trial of Charles Manson and three women from his "family".
That I watched this film while California attempts to extradite Roman Polanski — whose wife Sharon Tate was one of the Manson family victims — was not lost on me.

- It was a non-Egoyan kind of year at this year's equivalent to the Academy Awards, but "Egoyan-apprentice" Sarah Polley managed to leave a long-lasting impression with her directorial debut. The actress-turned-director picked up a total of seven awards (a trio of acting awards and the cream of the crop awards of Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Director and Best Film) for Away From Her while David Cronenberg's Eastern Promises equaled that tally winning mostly technical awards. Apart from a short film win, the ceremony blanked any wins from the French part of Canada - of course nothing stood a chance against the two popular titles mentioned above.
