Guy Maddin’s sophomore feature, Archangel, takes place in a fantastical crossroads of history, in a hamlet in Russia so remote that the twin shocks of World War I and the Bolshevik Revolution have only just reached town limits in 1919. Its plot—of a love triangle between a traumatized WWI veteran (Kyle McCulloch), the woman (Kathy Marykuca) he believes is his dead wife, and her own amnesiac husband (Ari Cohen)—offers something of a précis of narrative tropes and themes that would pervade Maddin’s cinema. There’s the juxtaposition of archaic film form with more risqué sexual exhibition, the slipperiness of memory, and a notion of projection heavily indebted to Alfred Hitchcock’s Vertigo.
Nonetheless, Archangel feels more like a repository of references to the cinema of a hundred years ago than something fully imbued with Maddin’s signature idiosyncrasy. Verohnka, for one, habitually wears a spiky, chintzy crown...

What’s Good: Cailee Spaeny shines as Priscilla, skillfully portraying the evolving character. The film captures the quintessential Coppola-esque visuals, showcasing mid-century America’s aesthetic charm. The initial sequence is a visual delight, highlighting Priscilla’s iconic appearance with authenticity
What’s Bad: Despite its aesthetic charm, “Priscilla” succumbs to a formulaic biopic style, narrating the highs and lows of the protagonist’s life in a mundane, episodic manner. The scenarios lack the momentum needed to elevate the film beyond its visual appeal.
Loo Break: A suitable loo break in this narrative could be after Elvis reconnects with Priscilla in 1962 and invites her to live at Graceland. This marks a transition in the story,...

Cailee Spaeny is Priscilla, portraying her from first meeting with Elvis (Jacob Elordi) to the last days of their marriage. The shy girl was all of 14 years old when she met the King of Rock n Roll in 1959 – while he was at the height of his fame and in the army. They were married in 1967, but their connection was never strong. As the Las Vegas years began in the early 1970s, the marriage of Elvis and Priscilla was unraveling.

There is almost no Elvis Presley music in Priscilla. There is an Elvis, played ambiguously by Jacob Elordi, and a few moments where he flicks the piano ivories or stretches the creases of a caped jumpsuit, but unlike nearly every film set in the world of sex, drugs, and rock and roll, there’s hardly any rock. This is, of course, the point for Sofia Coppola, who achieves her aim in making a film that is neither about a so-called king or, for that matter, a queen. This is the story of a woman so young and in love that she mistakes gilded cage bars for the Gates of Graceland.
In this way, Priscilla is as pensive and quiet a character study as any in Coppola’s oeuvre; a film that finds the interiority which eludes nearly all glossy musical biopics. The lovers at the movie’s center can, in fact,...

If the Hollywood dream factory is about myth-making, a fraction of it is about unraveling those myths through truth-telling. Attentively adapted from Priscilla Presley’s 1985 memoir “Elvis and Me,” writer-director Sofia Coppola’s compassionate, dreamy and lushly designed “Priscilla” is a little bit of both of those dueling Hollywoods.
It’s a rare cinematic opportunity to experience the notably private, known but unknowable Priscilla’s own truthful side of the story, and to see her stormy relationship with the King of Rock and Roll through her heavily-lined and faux-lashed eyes. It’s also a sumptuous bolstering of the Presley myth, a name with endless legends and perspectives attached to it.
Led by a soul-piercingly poignant Cailee Spaeny portraying the title role between the ages of 14 and 24, and a jaw-dropping Jacob Elordi (of “Saltburn”), giving Austin Butler a run for his money as Elvis, “Priscilla” feels richer and all the more resonant thanks to that dichotomy.

For much of Priscilla, Sofia Coppola’s subdued but stirring repositioning of the Elvis myth from the perspective of the woman who spent 14 years as his girlfriend and wife, there’s a sense of an emotionally immature man regularly taking a doll out of its box to play romance or dress-up or even kink one night when they drop acid. But he remains determined always to return her to her original packaging, in this case that of an unworldly 9th grade schoolgirl.
The beauty of this probing study of a lonely private world in the glare of the public eye is that while it appears on the surface to show a protagonist without agency, manipulated and compartmentalized since her teens, the Priscilla Presley portrayed here with moving emotional transparency by Cailee Spaeny is a self-possessed woman always attuned to her needs, who emerges from intoxication to begin a long, painful...

"It" is one of Stephen King's most beloved novels. The horror story has terrified readers since it debuted in 1986. "It" features some of the most disturbing moments that King has ever created, and that's no small statement. While the story itself is horrifying, "It" explores the lasting impact of childhood trauma. The coming-of-age elements make "It" one of King's most heartfelt stories. Children and adults can feel inspired by seeing the Losers' Club overcome their fears.
Given the book's popularity, a film adaptation was nearly guaranteed. "It" was first adapted as a two-part miniseries in 1990, starring Tim Curry as Pennywise the Clown. The first episode showed the youthful adventures of the Losers' Club, and the second episode flashed forward to their time as adults. While there is a lot of nostalgia for the 1990 "It," the miniseries doesn't quite capture all the nuances that made the novel so beloved.

But nothing is as it seems in their picturesque neighbourhood. And when Malik sees the folks next door throwing a very strange party, something very shocking has got to give.

For that’s what, for the most part Spiral presents us with: a man, broken by a hate crime of the past, trying...

Sitting in the living room on their first night in their new home, Malik (Jeffrey Bowyer-Chapman) is talking to step-daughter Kayla (Jennifer Laporte) about men. She's at an age where hearing about others' mistakes might help her to avoid her own. Men are mostly pretty awful really, he says, except for her dad - and Aaron (Ari Cohen) smiles contentedly. They've been together for a long time now; things feel easy between them. But has their relationship ever really faced much stress?
Life out here in the small town by the lake is supposed to be simpler and easier - better for Kayla, whom they both worry about in the city where it feels like anything could happen. A brief opening scene which echoes that of David Fincher's Zodiac hints at an underlying trauma in Malik's past. But is this new place safe? Malik quickly picks up on homophobic and.

As our esteemed Film Editor David Crow has said elsewhere, movies are back — but in a sense they’ve never really gone away. New original films have been popping up via streaming and video-on-demand all throughout the reign of the coronavirus, and they continue to do so even as theaters begin to reopen and the studios slowly start to fill them with new releases as well.
The operative word here is “slow”: we’re not seeing a deluge of new films anywhere — the big or small screen — but there is a steady flow of them nonetheless, and as is often the case, horror leads the way. Below is a round-up of fresh horror releases coming your way (or there already) in the US and UK, available either at your local multiplex (and we urge you to keep the risks of going to the theater in mind) or right in your living room.

We have the new trailer for Spiral, which will be making its premiere on Shudder later this month:
"Malik and Aaron move to a small town in search of a better environment for them and their 16-year-old daughter. But nothing is as it seems as something sinister lies behind the picturesque homes and welcoming faces of their new neighbors.
A horror film for the current age, Spiral skillfully dissects themes of ostracization, otherness, and the cycles of societal rejection and hate, led by a breakout performance by Jeffrey Bowyer-Chapman.
With Ty Wood and Chandra West. Written by Colin Minihan (writer of the Shudder Original Z and the upcoming new Urban Legend) and John Poliquin (Selfie), directed by Kurtis David Harder.
Spiral is produced by Minihan, Harder, and John Poliquin for Digital Interference, the celebrated Canadian indie label behind the SXSW sensation What Keeps You Alive (released by IFC Midnight), Shudder Originals Z and Still/Born,...

Director Kurtis David Harder, producer of Harpoon and What Keeps You Alive, has crafted a film whose title, Spiral, is symbolic of the endless cycle of hate that plagues the world and America in particular.
Set in 1995, the film follows same-sex interracial couple Malik (Jeffrey Bowyer-Chapman) and Aaron (Ari Cohen) who, along with Aaron’s teenage daughter Kayla (Jennifer Laporte), are moving out of the big city and into a small town; however, Malik is haunted by trauma in his past, as the film opens with a flashback of Malik seeing his ex-boyfriend’s murder. This hate crime is seen in flashes throughout Spiral, but despite the violence, Malik speaks of the bravery that comes with living your life loud and proud and he isn’t afraid to show off his man in this new very white, very straight neighborhood. A wonderful dynamic is created, and while they are hit...

Cassandra (played by Amy Nostbakken and Norah Sadava) reminds her mother (Maev Beaty’s Elaine) that we (humans) used to only live until forty. I think we often forget this fact—subjectively rather than objectively. The disparity between my generation and my parents’ is a veritable canyon as far as notions of domesticity, parenthood, and identity as a whole. Boomers were married with two kids by the time they exited college and now it’s not unusual to wait that long just to pick a major. We don’t move as fast as we used to both because we don’t have to and perhaps because we shouldn’t. And we certainly shouldn’t believe we have just one chance to get it right. It takes years to find a single semblance of self that’s worthy of unleashing upon the world let alone the series of reinventions necessary for our very survival.

Check out below the "international" (as in, with French subtitles) red band trailer for Maps to the Stars clip, and you’ll...

Starring: Martha Plimpton, Peter Stormare, Aaron Poole, Jill Hennessy, Ari Cohen, Jackie Burroughs and Steven Eric McIntyre
Shot with stunning simplicity by Brendan Steacy, “Small Town Murder Songs,” the sophomore feature effort of 33-year-old Toronto native Ed Gass-Donnelly, finds its footing in a Mennonite Christian community. When a girl turns up dead on the banks of the local “beach,” the town’s police chief Walter Ruden has issues from his past dredged to light. Like fellow Canadian David Cronenberg’s “History of Violence,” “Small Town Murder Songs” explores the issues of how deep one can bury what is innate within each of us and whether faith alone is truly enough to maintain strength.
With a detective at the helm, Chief Walter does the rounds, from the religious community leaders to old-school farmers and the nearby strip club,...
