Genre movies based in the home usually take one of a few routes. They can be a haunted house tale, they can be a home invasion movie or they can be something else. Anyone Home? sits nicely in that ‘something else’ category.
It centres on a single mum, Camila (Monique Gabriela Curnen), who is struggling financially and mentally while bringing up her son. She thinks her luck has changed though when she gets a job house-sitting a model home. All she has to do is decorate the house to look good for when would be buyers look round. But it doesn’t take too long for even that to be too much for her.

Shudder, the horror specialty streaming service of AMC Networks, has acquired all rights in North America to the hit Japanese zombie comedy “One Cut of the Dead.” The company said that it had also licensed rights to the film for Australia and New Zealand, where it plans to launch later this year.
Made for $27,000, the film became a box office sensation in Japan following its release in two Tokyo theaters in June of last year. It has since earned more than $30 million or 1,000 times its budget.
Shudder negotiated the deal with Adam Torel, whose production and distribution company Third Window Films released the film theatrically in the U.K. and on English-subtitled DVDs. Torel was representing Koji Ichihashi, the president of Enbu Seminar, the Tokyo film school that backed and produced “One Cut.”

The popular 2017 Japanese zombie comedy One Cut of the Dead/Kamera o Tomeru na! (Don’t Stop the Camera!), is set to get an English-language remake. For those of you not familiar with the film, here’s what it’s about:
A small low budget film crew is shooting a zombie horror flick in an abandoned water filtration plant, allegedly once used for human experiments by the Japanese military. Just as the director browbeats his actors and demands more special effects blood, a real zombie apocalypse erupts, much to his auteur delight. Packed with meta-movie references as mocking as they are loving, this relentless takedown of the Living Dead genre is a total blast.
I haven’t seen the original film, but I definitely want to check it out! It sounds like fun. Patrick Cunningham acquired the rights to the film and is producing and creators Enbu Seminar, Shinichiro Ueda...

“One Cut of the Dead,” a micro-budget horror film that last year defied the odds to become one of the biggest hits of the year in Japan, is headed for an English-language remake.
Patrick Cunningham, a Japan-based American producer whose credits include “Martha Marcy May Marlene” and “Starlet,” is behind the venture.
The original film, which depicts the zombie invasion of a low-budget movie shoot, had its debut at the Yubari festival in northern Japan in March of last year and played the following month at the Festival of Far East Film in Udine, Italy.
It received a nominal two-screen commercial release in Japan in June. But, buoyed by positive feedback, it scored more screens and played for several months. By the end of December, its cumulative gross had risen to $26.3 million – nearly 1,000 times its production budget of just $27,000.
“Most U.S. and Western audiences won’t get to see it.

Daytime is terrifying. Not many horror films capture that fact. The things that are meant get our hearts racing in cinema live in the shadows and strike unexpectedly in the evening. But the minute, day-to-day existence is more terrifying. Whether you realize it, the fears that internalize and metastasize are more often built from our daily experiences than a boogeyman hiding in the closet. “Model Home” — the debut feature from Patrick Cunningham — taps into these fears and manages to maintain a consistent sense of dread throughout.

Producer, Patrick S. Cunningham, and filmmaker, Darryl Wharton-Rigby, have acquired rights to the seminal manga series "Tokyo Tribe," which was created by Santa Inoue. Said to be a sensation in Japan when it was originally published in the late 1990s, the manga about hip-hop–influenced Japanese gangbangers, provides audiences with a look at the impact of African American culture on Japanese youth. Here's how Amazon describes it: "Ornate with hip-hop trappings and packed with gangland grit, 'Tokyo Tribes' paints a vivid, somewhat surreal vision of urban youth. Rival gangs from various Tokyo barrios press each other for turf, leaving many a foot soldier...

Avoiding the clichés one might expect to abound in a film about a beautiful young mother who enlists not once but twice to serve in Afghanistan, this is a feat of expert script writing and filmmaking.
Between the two stints in the Army, decorated U.S. Army medic and single mother Maggie Swann must renew her relationship with her five-year old son, adjust to her ex-husband’s new live-in and establish a new romance with a blue-eyed Mexican car mechanic, played by Manolo Cardona, who played Santiago in “Contracorriente” (“Undertow”) and is heart-throbbingly gorgeous. And she suffers from recurring memories of her stint in Afghanistan which don’t allow her to sleep much.
Michelle Monaghan who played Maggie Swann reminded me a little too much of Sandra Bullock though she is a good actress, playing the two ends of the emotional spectrum so well that I actually cried with her. Returning home and to Fort Bliss in Houston Texas after a horrendous stint in the army where she served as a medic, unable to sleep much and determined to take back her son, she plays the stoic decorated U.S. Army medic that she has become and yet, to win back her son and establish any other loving relationship, she must (and does) allow her emotions to rule in the end.
The director, Claudia Myers, who also wrote the screenplay was at the screening answering numerous questions afterward in both English and French. She is American but grew up in France. She worked extensively with the military making training movies and wanted to write a story about a woman with a career and family. This extreme situation of a career in the military also appealed to her because the woman had to play such emotional extremes, from not showing emotion in the worst circumstances of war to allowing her emotions for her son and for her lover to have free reign. This is the second feature she has directed after the 2006 Showtime movie, “ Kettle of Fish”.
The film premiered at Toronto Film Festival 2013 and is being sold internationally by Voltage who has sold it for Showgate for Japan and Umbrella for Australia, and Phase 4 for North America. “Fort Bliss” won the Audience Award at the Champs Elysees Film Festival this past June.
If only there were a family-friendly version, I would take my young grandson and his mother to see this as I think a child would empathize with the little boy, played marvelously by Oakes Fegley, if two very hot (and very meaningful) sex scenes were edited out for a family-friendly version.
The sex scenes, however, were great in that each showed the psychological needs of a long emotionally-suppressed military woman and latter the sad and determined lust of her and her lover. That was one cliché less: instead of showing the usual dreamy and loving sex motives of most films, sex revealed the emotional states of people under pressure.
The second cliché avoided was the emotional bond between mother and son. It was a film even a child could respond too, much the way children respond to the story of “Bambi” on film, and yet it avoided any sappiness. And the Army wants to see this story told, despite it showing troubling subject matter like Ptsd, reintegrating into society and sexual assault -- but to their credit they have supported it and helped the film get made in terms of accuracy.
The credits offered thanks to the 1st Armored Division and Fort Bliss,American Legion, American Red Cross, Joint Forces Training Base Los Alamitos, CA, Patriot Guard Riders, U.S. Army Public Affairs, Union Editorial and the United Service Organizations (Uso).
“Fort Bliss” stars Michelle Monaghan (“True Detective”, “Source Code”), Ron Livingston (“Boardwalk Empire,” “Office Space”), Manolo Cardona (“Undertow”, “Beverly Hills Chihauhua”), Gbenga Akinnagbe (“The Wire”), Emmanuelle Chriqui (“Entourage”) and Pablo Schreiber (“Law & Order: Special Victims Unit,” “Orange is the New Black”).
Producers are John Sullivan, Adam Silver, Patrick Cunningham, Claudia Myers, and Brendan McDonald. Executive Producer is Matt Chessé. Cinematography is by Adam Silver with editing by Matt Chessé and Carsten Kurpanek. Original music by Asche & Spencer.

As a testament to the power of friendship -- and the power of "Friends" -- a group of graduating students at Elon University chose to celebrate their impending freedom by filming a shot-for-shot remake of the iconic NBC comedy's opening credits in front of the school's fountain.
Lucie Miller, Sarah Davenport, Alexis Deprey, David Gwynn, Will Anderson and Patrick Cunningham reenacted the scenes made famous by Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, Lisa Kudrow, Matt LeBlanc and David Schwimmer over two nights, working for 15 hours in total, Gwynn told GoodMorningAmerica.com.
"We thought we could do it in one night, but we couldn't because the fountains shut off," Gwynn explained. "With all the set up, and going to thrift shops and getting the right clothes and putting it together and matching it frame by frame, the whole thing took 15 hours."
The students briefly considered attempting the feat without informing the school, but...

It would be the film with the juju in David O. Russell’s zany black comedy that was the toast of the 28th Independent Spirit Awards beating Beasts Of The Southern Wild – its fiercest rival in all major categories. Silver Linings Playbook cleaned up, grabbing Best Feature, Director, Screenplay and Best Actress went to Jennifer Lawrence – the heavy favorite for tomorrow’s Oscar. Fox Searchlight might have grabbed only one award for Beasts in the Cinematography category, but it’s other Sundance pick-up The Sessions managed to nab a pair of acting prizes for Helen Hunt and Oscar snubbed John Hawkes for Best Male Lead. In our favorite grant categories, Adam Leon (Gimme the Loot) nabbed the Someone to Watch Award (last year it went to Mark Jackson), the Piaget Producers Award went to Mynette Louie (she produced Tze Chun’s sophomore film Eye of Winter which we are keeping...

Today the 2013 Spirit Awards were handed out and it was a dominating effort from Silver Linings Playbook as it won Best Picture, Director (David O. Russell), Actress (Jennifer Lawrence) and Screenplay (Russell). The only award it was nominated for and didn't win was Best Actor where Bradley Cooper lost to John Hawkes for The Sessions, but that's only a minor blip on the radar when you win this big. Among the early awards handed out, Stephen Chbosky's The Perks of Being a Wallflower won for Best First Feature while Derek Connolly won for Best First Screenplay for the romantic sci-fi film Safety Not Guaranteed. Then the Twitterverse exploded with a Best Supporting Actor win for Matthew McConaughey and his work in Magic Mike, which, for a time, seemed like it may be able to eek into that last Supporting slot at the Oscars. No dice, a Spirit Award it will have to be.

I considered myself a fan of Andrew Dosunmu’s work precisely about ten minutes into his debut feature, Restless City. Workshopped at the 2005 Directors and Screenwriters Labs, it’s been a long time coming for what is his sophomore feature, Mother of George. Examining the interconnectedness between family and home both past and present, I’m thinking that his second collaboration with cinematographer Bradford Young might offer a better visual and narrative balance and a rich tapestry highlighting the immigrant experience. Auteur cinema’s Isaach De Bankolé toplines alongside Danai Gurira.

Nominations for the 28th Film Independent Spirit Awards were announced today and were led by Moonrise Kingdom and Silver Linings Playbook with five nominations each followed closely by fellow Best Feature nominees Beasts of the Southern Wild and Keep the Lights On as well as Ava DuVernay's Middle of Nowhere, each with four nominations. Richard Linklater's Bernie was the fifth Best Feature nominee while Middle of Nowhere found its four nominations largely in the acting categories with Emayatzy Corinealdi, David Oyelowo and Lorraine Toussant all being nominated and the fourth for the John Cassavetes Award, which goes to the "best" film made for under $500,000. Looking over the list of nominees I can't help but shrug at the screenplay nomination for Ruby Sparks (a film I loathed), but it's nice to see some First Time Feature love for Colin Trevorrow's Safety Not Guaranteed and Stephen Chbosky's The Perks of Being a Wallflower,...
