Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse was the big winner at the 2024 Annie Awards.
The Sony Pictures Animation film won seven awards at Saturday night’s Annies, including the top prize of best feature.
Other features that won multiple awards from the International Animated Film Society Asifa-Hollywood, which presents the prizes recognizing the year’s best in animation, include two-time winners Nimona and The Boy and the Heron, which were nominated for nine and seven awards apiece, respectively.
Across the Spider-Verse, Nimona and The Boy and the Heron are all nominated for the Oscar for best animated feature, alongside Elemental and Robot Dreams, which won best feature – independent. Pixar’s Elemental went home empty-handed, despite being nominated for six awards.

A funny thing happened on the way to the presumed two-horse awards-season race between 2023 toon feature juggernauts. Netflix’s Nimona picked a fight today with Gkids’ Hayao Miyazaki hit The Boy and the Heron and Sony’s global smash Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, scoring a leading nine Annie Awards nominations. The others managed seven noms apiece.
All three are up for the marquee Best Feature prize along with Toho’s anime Suzume, which also landed seven Annie noms, and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem from Paramount and Nickelodeon Film, which got six.
Notably missing from the top toon feature race is Disney/Pixar’s Elemental, which also scooped six nominations from Asifa-Hollywood. Meanwhile, Universal/Illumination The Super Mario Bros. Movie — the No. 2 film of 2023, which plumbed $1.36 billion worldwide — was clogged up with just a single Annie nom for Jack Black’s voice work as the villainous Bowser.

In a competitive year in animation, Nimona, based on the graphic novel by Nd Stevenson, leads the 51st Annie Awards feature competition with nine nominations includes best feature, direction and writing.
In the top category for best feature, the International Animated Film Society Asifa-Hollywood — which hands out the annual animation prizes — also nominated Hayao Miyazaki’s The Boy and the Heron, Sony Pictures Animation’s Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse and Makoto Shinkai’s Suzume, which earned seven nominations apiece; and Paramount and Nickelodeon’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem, which collected six nominations. Pixar’s Elemental also earned a total of six nominations, though it was snubbed in the top category.
Nimona, The Boy and the Heron, Across the Spider-Verse, Mutant Mayhem and Robot Dreams (which was also nominated for best independent feature) received directing noms.
Disney’s centennial-celebrating Wish and Dreamworks Animation’s Trolls World Tour both failed to earn a single nomination.

The National and Phoebe Bridgers are cracking up to stave off falling apart in the new animated music video for their recent collaboration, “Laugh Track.”
The video was directed and animated by Bernard Derriman, who recently helmed The Bob’s Burgers Movie. In it, a couple sit down for a grave conversation but are soon overwhelmed by a rising tide of chuckling faces. Before the couple nearly drowns in bleak hilarity, however, they launch into the sky, escaping the deluge and eventually landing back at the table for a clear-eyed conversation.

Hand-drawn, 2D cel animation is hard. It's labor-intensive and time-consuming and the leading cause of death for pencils. Who knows, that last bit might even be true. Despite its difficulty, however, there are plenty of artists who still gravitate toward the medium. 3D CGI animation might be readily available in 2023 but for some, it just doesn't capture that same magic.
Loren Bouchard, the creative mind behind "Bob's Burgers," an ongoing 2D animated series, told Looper during an exclusive interview that the medium is, "by definition, somewhat more minimal." Bouchard explained, "It doesn't have to be simple, but it's reducing the world to a line drawing with some color. It's a fascinating process." He noted that CGI incorporates a true perspective of reality, and while he respects and enjoys CG animated films, he hopes that "the art and craft of 2D animation, especially at that higher level, that theatrical level," continues on.

It's hard to imagine the current landscape of television without "Bob's Burgers." Just like the animated classics "The Simpsons," "Family Guy," and "King of the Hill" before them, the show created by Loren Bouchard has become a staple of the Fox network's weekly lineup since 2011. The Emmy-winning series starring H. Jon Benjamin, John Roberts, Dan Mintz, Eugene Mirman, and Kristen Schaal as the offbeat yet lovable Belcher family has also extended its reach even further through reruns via syndication and streaming on Hulu.
However, the Belchers' future wasn't always as stable as their current reputation would lead you to believe. Long before Bouchard's team created over 200 episodes filled with creative burgers and catchy songs, the people working on the show about this eccentric family living in a coastal town were worried that it wouldn't stay on the airwaves very long after the first season. Even after the original premise involving cannibalism was scrapped,...

For better or for worse, there's a lot of turnover in the world of television. While it can happen onscreen occasionally, as we recently saw with Henry Cavill in "The Witcher," this especially applies behind the scenes. Almost every day there's news about shows adding new writers or swapping showrunners. For example, after a tumultuous first season on Netflix under the guidance of Scott Buck, Marvel's "Iron Fist" rebounded with a better (but overall still not great) second season helmed by Raven Metzner before getting canceled. Speaking of shows based on beloved comic book characters, the adaptation of Robert Kirkman's "The Walking Dead" on AMC had four different showrunners over the course of their eleven-season run. Luckily for them, only one of those instances resulted in a lawsuit (which was eventually settled outside of court).
But if the major creative forces of a writers' room get to stay together...

In the early days of the Academy’s animated feature Oscar, there were questions as to whether enough films would qualify each year for the award to be given. Not anymore! This year sees a record number of contenders across a wide variety of genres, styles and audiences, from serious, adult-targeted films (like “Charlotte” and “Eternal Spring”) to boffo offerings from Hollywood’s top toon studios — and that doesn’t even count such anime franchise sensations as “One Piece Film: Red” and “Jujutsu Kaisen 0,” which didn’t submit but further illustrate the vitality of the form.

Ahed’s Knee (Nadav Lapid)
It’s always interesting, at the beginning of any Nadav Lapid film, to note the myriad Israeli institutions that have backed the project. Since Emile’s Girlfriend (2006), Lapid’s work has sought to make sense of Israeli society—his criticisms a byproduct of attempting to articulate the confusion and warring arguments in his own head. Having won Berlin’s Golden Bear with Synonyms in 2019, Lapid could claim to be the most renowned Israeli filmmaker of his generation. That his work is at risk of falling afoul of that same state speaks volumes about the country’s ever-increasing authoritarianism as a whole. Further confirmation of that renown came with news that his latest would compete for the Palme...

The Belchers are ready to introduce the world of streaming to The Bob's Burgers Movie.
After several delays, the highly-anticipated movie launched in theaters in May.
As cinema-to-streaming windows continue to shrink, the movie will be available to stream on both Hulu and HBO Max in the U.S. beginning July 12.
“The story begins when a ruptured water main creates an enormous sinkhole right in front of Bob’s Burgers, blocking the entrance indefinitely and ruining the Belchers’ plans for a successful summer,” reads the logline.
“While Bob and Linda struggle to keep the business afloat, the kids try to solve a mystery that could save their family’s restaurant."
"As the dangers mount, these underdogs help each other find hope and fight to get back behind the counter, where they belong.”
Series creator Loren Bouchard directed The Bob’s Burgers Movie with Bernard Derriman, from his and Nora Smith’s script.

You’ll be able to stream “The Bob’s Burgers Movie” on two different streaming services next month.
The film has landed a streaming release date of July 12 on HBO Max and Hulu, hitting both services on the same day 45 days after the movie was first released in theaters.
This is in line with the streaming release strategy for films that first get an exclusive theatrical release under the Disney banner, as “The Bob’s Burgers Movie” was produced and distributed by Disney-owned 20th Century Studios. Hulu is owned by Disney, of course, but the HBO Max streaming debut is due to an existing deal between WarnerMedia and 20th Century Fox that will continue through 2022.
As of now, “The Bob’s Burgers Movie” is not set to stream on Disney+.

After struggling to find its footing over an initial season, Loren Bouchard’s Bob’s Burgers has become one of the most delightful half-hours on TV. Its feature-film expansion retains the series’ scope and scale and, unlike other big-screen adaptations, it resists the urge to branch out into gimmicks—no celebrity cameos, no big set pieces. That, after all, is not the Belchers’ style. A running gag is that every time they come close to success a slight mistake compounds their fate and keeps them from reaching beyond their modest but highly creative seaside burger joint.
In that spirit the film stays grounded, following the Belchers’ adventures along Ocean Avenue in the shadow of the Wonder Wharf amusement pier—perhaps inspired by some of the smaller towns along the Jersey Shore like Point Pleasant and Belmar. In this film the Belchers never even venture off to the ritzier enclaves nearby like King’s Head Island.

It’s not usually a good sign when a movie features a diarrhea joke in its first five minutes, but for The Bob’s Burgers Movie, it’s proof that the film has its heart is in the right place.
Longtime viewers of the Fox animated sitcom know that intestinal maladies are common for anxiety-prone restaurant owner Bob Belcher (H. Jon Benjamin), and are of constant interest to his upbeat wife Linda (John Roberts) and son Gene (Eugene Mirman). So when the film opens with a song about Bob being plagued by bowel issues because he’s about to ask for an extension on a business loan, it’s proof that the family’s transition to the big screen is in the right hands.

Spoiler Alert: Do not read if you have not watched “The Bob’s Burgers Movie.”
For over 10 years, Loren Bouchard has been telling the stories of the Belcher clan on a weekly basis. Created by Bouchard, “Bob’s Burgers” premiered in 2011 as an animated sitcom about married couple Bob (H. Jon Benjamin) and Linda Belcher (John Roberts) and their three kids — Tina (Dan Mintz), Gene (Eugene Mirman) and Louise (Kristen Schaal) — as they operate their small family owned burger shop and navigate the mundane absurdity of everyday life.
Initial reviews of the show when it premiered were mixed; for Variety, Brian Lowry wrote that it “too often falls on the wrong side of the ‘entertaining’/’annoying’ divide.” But over the course of the first and second season, the show began revealing both its characters’ more idiosyncratic quirks — whether it’s Linda’s boundless optimism or Tina’s obsession with butts — and a...

While “The Bob’s Burgers Movie” is sure to be a hit with fans of the animated Fox series, there’s also a lot for newcomers to enjoy, including four toe-tapping musical numbers that ramp up the energy while revealing the internal lives of the Belchers — parents Bob (H. Jon Benjamin) and Linda (John Roberts) and kids Tina (Dan Mintz), Gene (Eugene Mirman), and Louise (Kristen Schaal) and their devoted family friend, Teddy. The film opens with an ode to summer, a big, Broadway-like number that might recall last year’s “In the Heights” as it moves from the film’s namesake restaurant into the oceanside town the series takes place in, culminating in an anxious meeting with the bank officer overseeing the family’s business loan. The song is hilarious, heartfelt and uplifting — while celebrating the Belchers’ underdog spirit.

This review of “The Bob’s Burgers Movie” was first published May 23, 2022.
As a non-viewer of the long-running Fox animated comedy “Bob’s Burgers,” I couldn’t immediately quantify why I found “The Bob’s Burgers Movie” to be funny and charming while I was watching it, only to have it mostly whisp away from memory within a few days.
It wasn’t until I watched another TV-based feature film currently in theaters, “Downton Abbey: A New Era,” that I was reminded of the difference between fans and newbies for movies like these. The “Downton” sequel rewards devotees who remember the episode when they opened the Abbey for tourists, or the Dowager Countess’ near-fling with a Russian prince, and “Bob’s Burgers” no doubt does likewise for the fans who have tuned in for 12 seasons.

Thanks to stellar reviews and a healthy dose of nostalgia, Paramount and Skydance’s star-spangled action film — starring Tom Cruise as a fighter pilot who feels the need for speed — is expected to generate a blockbuster 85 million to 100 million over the weekend. Through Memorial Day on Monday, domestic box office receipts could fly as high as 130 million. “Maverick” is playing in 4,732 North American cinemas, the widest theater count in history.
The follow-up to 1986’s “Top Gun” was scheduled to open in the summer of 2020 until Covid-19 scrambled those plans. But Paramount and Cruise were adamant about keeping the film in theaters rather than sending the sequel straight to a streaming service. When Cruise was recently asked at Cannes Film Festival if the sequel would skip the big screen,...

Have no fear: despite churning out more than 200 episodes over 12 seasons, The colorful, kitschy look of Loren Bouchard’s Fox hit is delightful in feature format — the film is, quite notably, the first hand-drawn, traditionally animated film theatrically released by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures in over a decade; the last time that happened was “Winnie the Pooh” in 2011 — and its quippy, high-energy jokes should appeal to a wide audience.
That includes fans both old and new, as “The Bob’s Burger’s Movie” doesn’t require any previous knowledge of the titular burger joint or the wacky Belcher family who runs it to enjoy this first feature, though it certainly can’t hurt. Newbies will get hip to the personalities and pratfalls of the various stars with ease: Bob (voiced by H. “The Bob’s Burgers Movie” knows its recipe and sticks to it. For 12 seasons, show creator Loren Bouchard, who here co-helms with longtime producer and supervising director Bernard Derriman, has served up the cartoon sitcom antics of the daffy, working-class Belcher family who live in an unnamed town with the vibe of Pittsburgh-by-the-Sea. Hijinks hinge on their countertop diner and a few fixations that the family obsesses over like beloved worry dolls: father Bob (H. Jon Benjamin) frets about their finances, pubescent daughter Tina (Dan Mintz) drools over boys, middle child Gene (Eugene Mirman) hypes his band, The Itty Bitty Ditty Committee, and 9-year-old Louise (Kristen Schaal) cherishes her pink bunny hat. Meanwhile, mom Linda (John Roberts) cheerleads with lunatic optimism.

Like “The Simpsons” and the “Rugrats” before them, the Belchers are making the (coronavirus delayed) animated jump from televisions to movie theatres with “The Bob’s Burgers Movie.” The brainchild of show creator Loren Bouchard (co-directing here with Bernard Derriman), the beloved series “Bob’s Burgers” follows the Belcher family, owners of the eponymous, perpetually struggling burger joint by the sea.

Loren Bouchard's and Bernard Derriman's "The Bob's Burgers Movie," out in theaters at the end of May, will nestle neatly between the show's 12th and 13th seasons. The long-running animated sitcom has slyly entrenched itself in the American pop consciousness as this generation's "yeah, I could watch that" show. The Belcher family is a gathering of kooks and obsessives whose bizarre interests set them apart from even other kooks. No one character is exactly on any other's wavelength on "Bob's Burgers." Bob (H. Jon Benjamin) is obsessed with his diner, but he doesn't really seem to understand humanity. His wife, Linda (John Roberts), is enthused and encouraging...
