The film, which premiered a few months ago and continues to be shown on the Disney Channel, introduced a whole new generation to Kim and Ron (her best friend and sidekick) as they try to save the world from evil villains. The Newman scoring stage at 20th Century-Fox was overflowing with people – and good will – as Ascap last night celebrated the 30th anniversary of its Film Scoring Workshop with a studio recording session for the 12 lucky young composers chosen to participate.
“This is like a window into the time continuum, where you can look into the future and see those who are going to make a real contribution to film music,” Ascap president and chairman Paul Williams said. “It’s a cultural gift in one sense, but on another level it’s a really smart business investment.”
The performing-rights society sponsors this four-week event for emerging film and TV composers every summer, with Emmy winner Richard Bellis at the helm. Two major performance-rights organizations announced this week the launch of workshops designed to aid up-and-coming film and TV composers: Ascap, for film scoring; and Bmi, for conducting.
Both are multi-week events for which hundreds apply annually, and the two will culminate in live recording sessions at Los Angeles area studios later this month.
Ascap began its 30th annual Film Scoring Workshop today, with Emmy-winning composer Richard Bellis as mentor and Ascap film and TV executives Michael Todd and Jennifer Harmon producing.
It’s a comprehensive, four-week program that has proven a launching pad for many composers in the past, including Jim Dooley (“Pushing Daisies”), Rob Duncan (“Castle”), Matthew Margeson (the “Kingsman” movies), Cliff Martinez (“Drive”), Mateo Messina (“Juno”) and Austin Wintory (“Journey”).
This year’s 12 composers — chosen from nearly 400 applicants — include Shaun Crawford of Cape Town, South Africa; Damien Lane of Cambewarra, Australia; Kyle Laporte of Playa Del Rey, Calif.

In 2017 over 475 scripted original series aired and already half way through 2018, this year is on track to beat that number. With new content being released on a weekly basis a project has to be pretty extraordinary to stand out of the overly saturated crowd and even go on to secure multiple seasons. One series that has proven itself to be uniquely genius is Netflix’s A Series of Unfortunate Events. Between Neil Patrick Harris’ over the top portrayal of the mischievous Count Olaf to the set design and costumes, the viewer is constantly left entertained and wanting more.

For composer Jim Dooley, stepping into season two of “A Series of Unfortunate Events” was “like putting on a warm coat. This kind of dark fantasy world is really something I feel very comfortable doing.” Based on the book series by Lemony Snicket (a.k.a. Daniel Handler), this Netflix comedy centers on the three Baudelaire siblings: Violet (Malina Weissman), Klaus (Louis Hynes), and Sunny (Presley Smith). After their parents die in a mysterious fire, they face trials and tribulations while uncovering dark family secrets, all while the evil Count Olaf (Neil Patrick Harris) tries to steal their family fortune. Watch our exclusive video interview with Dooley above.

TNT’s dramatic thriller, The Last Ship chronicles a global catastrophe that nearly decimates the world’s population. Because of its positioning, the Navy destroyer U.S.S. As the second season opens, Captain Chandler (Eric Dane), Xo Slattery (Adam Baldwin), Dr. Rachel Scott (Rhona Mitra) and the rest of the crew come home to a world they no longer recognize. Legends of Oz: Dorothy’s Return
Written by Adam Balsam and Randi Barnes
Directed by Will Finn and Daniel St. Pierre
USA, 2014
Roughly a minute after the opening credits of Legends of Oz: Dorothy’s Return end, the Lion (no longer Cowardly) not-so-playfully threatens to give the Tin Man an “oil change.” Although this is but the first of many groaners to come, it at least establishes an accurate, if unentertaining, tone to the picture. There might be a nugget of an interesting story in this adaptation if the computer animation wasn’t so cheap-looking and flat, or if the character development in the script felt earned or logical, but Legends of Oz: Dorothy’s Return is a mostly poor excuse for a start to the summer movie season in terms of family-friendly fare.

Chasing Ice directed by Jeff Orlowski
Chasing Ice is the story of James Balog’s mission to change the tide of history by gathering undeniable evidence of our changing planet. Within months of that first trip to Iceland, the photographer conceived the boldest expedition of his life: The Extreme Ice Survey. With a band of young adventurers in tow, Balog began deploying revolutionary time-lapse cameras across the brutal Arctic to capture a multi-year record of the world’s changing glaciers.
In a year where the Short Listed Academy documentary features deal with issues ranging from sexual harassment in the military to the Catholic Church’s cover-up of sexually molesting children, Chasing Ice deals with arguably the most important issue proving that the ice caps are melting and that the warming of the planet will have a catastrophic effect. But this is a year where the MPAA rating of a film about bullying school students has seemed to get the most press. That’s a shame. Chasing Ice needs to be seen. It is the most important short listed documentary film of the year. Like Davis Guggenheim’s Al Gore PowerPoint presentation, this film is scary. With never-before-seen time lapse photography we can dramatically see the ice caps and giant glaciers shrinking. A chunk of ice the size of lower Manhattan crashes into the sea. The ice flows like a river into the sea. We all know that when the ice melts, it releases its fresh water into the sea and that the water will rise. In time a few feet. Say good bye to land that several hundred million people live on.
So what’s the problem? They don’t have the press machine of Bob and Harvey Weinstein that makes a mountain out of an MPAA rating. Can the Oscar nomination go to the most important film? (could this paragraph go after next paragraph?)
But wait, there is more. This is a strikingly well made film. It has a compelling character, James Balog, who is giving his body to science and this cause. The cracks we hear are not chunks of ice but his knees disintegrating as he scales cliffs of rock and ice. The filmmakers really are risking their lives making the film, the ice takes no prisoners, the small planes and helicopters regularly crash. The film unfolds with precision; we are moved and awed by the characters and the stunning photography. The score is first rate as is the editing. This is a work that should be short listed but might be overlooked because it lacks the political coolness of some of the other films. This would be a shame.
The Filmmakers
Chasing Ice is directed by Jeff Orlowski, cinematographer for the Extreme Ice Survey, and an award-winning filmmaker. Maggie Simpson a short animated film by David Silverman
The Longest Daycare is a four-and-a-half-minute-long animated 3D short animated film based on the animated television series The Simpsons.
Directed by David Silverman The Longest Daycare is one of my favorite short animated films short listed for the Oscar this year. Silverman, credited with creating the look of the Simpsons, has directed numerous episodes of this hit series. Daycare has no dialogue. It is hilarious in part because of its silent film style. It is smart and fun. Maggie is a delight. This short film is really special. Between the 3D, the super clever writing and the stunning animation style, it is one of the very rare animations that can be enjoyed by any audience. Silverman’s work deserves an Oscar.
Scored by Hans Zimmer, best known for his work on Hollywood blockbusters, the score references numerous films scores and adds another layer of meaning to this magnificent (really?) work. Silverman attended the University of Maryland College Park and studied animation at UCLA.

Academy announces 15 feature documentary films shortlisted for the Documentary Film Nomination
The Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences announced the short listed documentary features on December 3, 2012. Under the new documentary branch rules all of the branch members as well as documentary nominees and award winners from other Academy branches could vote for the short listed films. About 180 Academy members participated. Dropping the committee process where four committees would screen one quarter of the submitted films, Documentary Branch Governor Michael Moore pushed the branch to use a preferential voting system with all branch members and other qualified Academy members participating. As this writer expected, works with a lot of hype, such as Bully, were short listed. One can wonder how many members who voted for this film actually saw it. In addition to changing the short listing process, the branch demanded that films had to have been reviewed in either the New York Times or the Los Angeles Times. Voters received 126 DVDs in the mail.
A number of worthy films were omitted, as is always the case, including: The Central Park Five (directed by Ken Burns, Sarah Burns, and David McMahon), West of Memphis (directed by Amy Berg), The Queen of Versailles, directed by Lauren Greenfield. I also really liked Bad 25 (directed by Spike Lee) and Love Marilyn (directed by Liz Garbus). Samsara (directed by Ron Fricke) is the year’s best documentary for its sheer poetry
The Academy can choose to nominate up to three people. However, only the director has a lock on the nomination. Individuals credited as “Producer” are vetted by the Producer’s Guild. Each must prove that they did a majority of the producer roles. This is the third year that this rule has been in force. Many of the films have multiple “producers” so it remains to be seen who will receive nominations. The decision of the Academy will be announced once the films are nominated. This has been somewhat contentious in the past.
AMPAS rules follow:
The nominee(s) should be the individual(s) most involved in the key creative aspects of the filmmaking process. A maximum of two persons may be designated as nominees, one of whom must be the credited director who exercised directorial control, and the other of whom must have a producer or director credit. If a producer is named, that individual must have performed a major portion of the producing functions, in accordance with Academy producer criteria. No more than two statuettes will normally be given in the Documentary Feature category. All individuals with a “Producer” or “Produced by” credit on films that reach the semifinal round will automatically be vetted. The Documentary Branch Executive Committee will determine which producers, if any, are eligible to receive an Oscar. In the unlikely event of a dispute, filmmakers may appeal the committee’s decision. In extremely rare circumstances, a third statuette may be awarded. Production companies or persons with the screen credit of executive producer, co-producer or any credit other than director or producer shall not be eligible as nominees for the motion picture.
The Short List:
Ai Weiwei: Never Sorry, directed by Alison Klayman
Bully, directed by Lee Hirsch
Chasing Ice, directed by Jeff Orlowski
Detropia, directed by Heidi Ewing and Rachel Grady
Ethel, directed by Rory Kennedy
5 Broken Cameras, directed by Emad Burnat and Guy Davidi
The Gatekeepers, directed by Dror Moreh
The House I Live In, directed by Eugene Jarecki
How to Survive a Plague, directed by David France
The Imposter, directed by Bart Layton
The Invisible War, directed by Kirby Dick
Mea Maxima Culpa: Silence in the House of God, directed by Alex Gibney
Searching for Sugar Man, directed by Malik Bendjelloul
This Is Not a Film, directed by Mojtaba Mirtahmasb and Jafar Panahi
The Waiting Room, directed by Peter Nicks
The nominations for the 85th Academy Awards will be announced at 5:30 am (Pst) on Thursday, January 10, 2013. The awards will be handed out on Sunday, February 24, 2013.

When discussing a song he wrote for the new videogame “Disney Epic Mickey 2: The Power of Two,” composer Jim Dooley refers to it as “the opening number.” “We talk about it like it’s Broadway!” he joked. But maybe the connection between videogames and Broadway isn’t so crazy. As videogames become more and more elaborate—complete with sophisticated scripts and character development—the demand for skilled voice actors is increasing. Additionally, with games like “Epic Mickey 2,” where music is essential to telling the story, Dooley suggested that there’s no reason why a videogame might not one day inspire a Broadway musical. We spoke with “Disney Epic Mickey 2” composer Jim Dooley and songwriter Mike Himelstein about their experiences working on the videogame. What makes “Disney Epic Mickey 2” different from other videogames?Jim Dooley: This is the first time that songs have been used to drive the narrative forward in a video game.

Mockingbird Lane 1×01 – “Pilot”
Stars: Portia de Rossi, Jerry O’Connell, Eddie Izzard, Charity Wakefield, Mason Cook, John Kassir | Created by Bryan Fuller
Note – I’m reviewing this as the pilot on the offchance that it does get picked up, so I can cover it weekly. I’m really hoping that happens.
I love the works of Bryan Fuller and I love the revved up energy that he brings to any single project that he writes. He has this innate ability to inject whimsy and warm and fuzzy feelings into his work and I’m proud to say that Mockingbird Lane completely carries on the tradition of all his past works. His newest creation Mockingbird Lane, is based on the classic horror-sitcom, The Munsters. That’s an understatement when looking at the bigger picture. What sets this version apart from the other version, is the sense that there is a creativity...

Hollywood Reporter got to talk to Mockingbird Lane creator Bryan Fuller to talk about his upcoming Munsters reboot. I was going to edit the interview and put down only the good stuff, but due to the massive anticipation for this show on FM, I thought I’d just give you the whole thing so you can decide yourself what’s important or not. He talks about bringing back many of the most famous Universal monsters, talks about the casting, and also is asked to compare the show to ABC’s Once Upon A Time. Again, this is THR’s interview, and it is below. Enjoy.
The Hollywood Reporter: You mentioned this is the third incarnation of the Munsters reboot. How has the project evolved?
Bryan Fuller: The first two are relatively the same. It was essentially more on the scale of the heroes. The first version was where each...

Epic Mickey took off like a shot, and found itself a favorite among gamers young and old, and gamers who aren’t even remotely gamers. Building in fun, and really taking a whole new approach to games that can suck players in, whoever they are, the game was elevated to classic status almost instantly.
Well, if you couldn’t get enough, your wait is almost over. Epic Mickey 2: The Power of Two is on the way, and it looks to be better than ever, with Warren Spector at the helm, and moving forward with the possibilities.
It’s tricky to imagine where this will go, with the way people fell in love with the first game, but if you played the original, you know that those behind these titles are in love with them as well. See below for all the info, some cool screenshots and other images, and a trailer.

After much speculation dating all the way back to last year, Disney have finally confirmed that a sequel is in the works to 2010′s Epic Mickey. Originally released exclusively for the Nintendo Wii, the paintbrush wielding platformer had players controlling the iconic Mickey Mouse through a dark alternate Disneyland inhabited by forgotten characters. The upcoming sequel – titled Epic Mickey 2: The Power of Two – will launch not only on the Wii, but also make its series debut on the Xbox 360 and PS3.
Despite the fact that Epic Mickey was a charming experience – boasting a lavish art style and loving references to Disney’s silent-era cartoons – it left many critics ranting over its erratic camera issues and unfocused mission structure. With the follow up, lead-designer Warren Spector has promised to have these issued fixed in the sequel.

Epic Mickey 2: The Power of 2 has been officially announced for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and Wii. In an AP report, Deus Ex and Thief creator Warren Spector revealed that his Junction Point studio will once again be working on the sequel. As previously rumored, Epic Mickey 2 will feature co-operative play, with one player controlling Mickey while the other takes on the role of Disney's first mascot Oswald the Lucky Rabbit. Mickey will retain his ability to use paint and thinner on the environment, which will be complemented for puzzles by a remote control Oswald wields to manipulate electricity. While the first game was designed as an homage to Mickey Mouse's early years as a silent cartoon, the sequel will be a fully voiced musical. Composer and lyricists Jim Dooley (more)...

If "Epic Mickey" got into your head so deep that you find yourself whistling its tunes during non-gaming hours and remembering fondly your times spent painting across Wasteland, you may be interested to know that the Jim Dooley-composed soundtrack that was used for it will soon be available on a standalone disc or over iTunes. An announcement from Disney Interactive Studios today tagged the 20-track collection for December 21, at which point you'll be able to listen to the Emmy winner's new tunes whenever you wish.
"Jim Dooley perfectly understood the concept of classic Disney sound and was able to compose a slightly off-center feel to match the unique world of Wasteland in Disney Epic Mickey," Junction Point general manager and creative director Warren Spector said in a press release. "The intuition and skill that makes Jim Dooley one of the industry’s top musical talents is represented in Disney Epic Mickey.

Dorothy of Oz is a CGI animated feature film being developed that serves as a sequel to the original Wizard of Oz story. While this film is under construction, Sam Raimi is currently preparing to shoot his Oz prequel film, Oz, The Great and Powerful. This new CGI project sounds like it's going to be pretty cool.
In the story, Dorothy returns to Kansas to find it devastated by the tornado that had whisked her away to the magical land of Oz. The home she had been so desperate to return to is no longer; the townspeople, with nowhere to turn, are packing up and moving out. However, before Dorothy can even begin to react to or resist this change, she is transported back to Oz in a giant rainbow. Oz is in trouble, and the people there need her help: Dorothy's old friends the Scarecrow, Tin Man and Cowardly Lion have disappeared,...

As SciFi Mafia reported in January of this year, show creator Bryan Fuller is continuing his canceled series Pushing Daisies in the form of a graphic novel. Fuller is hopeful that the comic will hits stands in early 2011. He spoke about the current status of the project:
“Issue #1 will hopefully be out in early 2011, issue #2 is being coloured as we speak, and issue #3 is being written.”
Fans can not only enjoy the continuation of the story, but hopefully, also hear songs by the original cast. Fuller hopes to be able to deliver the comic with a soundtrack to connect it with the television series:
“Our Emmy award-winning composer Jim Dooley and I have been talking about giving the audience a multimedia experience with the comic – specifically a score.
We have no idea whether we can actually afford to do an actual Pushing Daisies comic soundtrack (because the cast has agreed...

Jim Dooley has scored "When A Stranger Calls", "The Ring", "The Amityville Horror" and now he takes on the "Neighbors From Hell", the highly anticipated animated horror/comedy that hits TBS June 7th at 10Pm e.s.t. HorrorBid sat down with the composer to talk about his latest project...
You say the Neighbors From Hell main title is very unique, what makes it different from other main titles you have worked on to date?
For the main title I was directed to make it ‘Sherwood Schwartz’-style, which are those classic catchy titles from the 70s that told you in 30 seconds Exactly what the show was about such as Gilligan’s Island and the Brady Bunch.
