This article contains spoilers for Battlestar Galactica.
Think back to the early 2000s. Star Trek‘s vision of an optimistic future no longer kept pace with the post-9/11 world. Instead, Trek writer Ronald D. Moore left the franchise to work with David Eick on reviving a cheesy sci-fi show from the 1970s best remembered for its weird cyborg dog and cool-looking evil robots.
And yet, somehow, Moore and Eick made Battlestar Galactica into a hit, an ambitious mix of deep lore, compelling character building, and religious yearning. Not even the controversial final season, which took leaps that rivaled the ending of Lost, could diminish the series popularity.
So why in the world did the Battlestar Galactica spinoffs flop so hard? For Eick, the answer is simple: Poor planning and lack of vision.
“Ron’s involvement vacillated so there was less consistency and less reliability and, as we shored up his absence,...

For the 15th anniversary of the "Battlestar Galactica" finale, I spoke with several of the show's writers and actors for an inside look at how it reached that conclusion. One of them was David Eick, the series' co-creator (with Ronald D. Moore). I asked the man who resurrected "Galactica" out of its campy 1970s roots why attempts to keep the franchise going faltered.
You see, "Battlestar" hadn't even been finished a year when a prequel spin-off debuted: "Caprica," an ensemble drama set more than 50 years before the series on the eponymous planet (one of the 12 colonies razed by the robotic Cylons at the outset of "Battlestar Galactica"). The series debuted in January 2010 and wrapped that November after a single, 19-episode first season -- its planned multi-year run aborted by low ratings.
Next, Eick and co. pivoted with "Battlestar Galactica: Blood and Chrome," a second prequel (but after "Caprica") set during the first human/Cylon war.

15 years ago, on March 20, 2009, "Battlestar Galactica" concluded its run with the series finale "Daybreak," and man, what a frakkin' good show that was. A reboot of a short-lived 1970s series, "Battlestar Galactica" follows a starship fleet searching for the fabled planet Earth after humanity's home, the 12 Colonies of Man, are destroyed by their robotic creations, the Cylon. I was a little too young to watch "Galactica" weekly on its first airing, but thanks to the magic of Netflix, I downed the whole thing the summer before I entered high school.
It was the first show of that length that I watched from beginning to end. I love "Star Trek," but I'll always appreciate "Battlestar" for going further than even the Final Frontier dared push. "Battlestar" co-creator Ronald D. Moore got his start in TV writing on "Star Trek" and set out to make...

Made-for-tv movies have developed from their Hallmark stereotype in recent years, thanks to the rise of companies such as HBO. Although these films feature lower budgets and smaller casts than larger productions, they offer directors and actors greater freedom – leading them toward more successful results.

The re-imagined "Battlestar Galactica" series, developed by Ronald D. Moore and David Eick, hit our screens in 2003. The ongoing story would eventually end in 2009, having picked up several accolades -- including winning Emmys and Hugo awards -- along the way. Telling the tale of the titular capital ship and its ragtag fleet of civilians and military personnel, "Battlestar Galactica" follows the last remnants of humanity fleeing their robotic race (and humans' former slaves), the Cylons. In an era obsessed with grim and gritty reboots, "Battlestar Galactica" stood out as a television series that honored the original series and charted brave new territory, too.
Moore and Eick's series was as much a study of theology as it was a military drama with detailed and complex character stories. Throughout the Battlestar's long journey to find a new home, the show would create some of the most memorable sci-fi television episodes to date.

Battlestar Galactica had one of the most successful reboots ever. With a new show on the way, we examine what made it so special...
This article comes from Den of Geek UK.
Warning: contains spoilers for Battlestar Galactica.
Battlestar Galactica sits alongside Stargate, Star Trek, and Doctor Who as one of the biggest sci-fi franchises of the late 20th and early 21st century, sporting an original 1978 series, a 1980 follow-up, a complete reboot starting with a mini-series in 2003 and running for four seasons, and two spin-off series, prequels Caprica and Blood and Chrome.
With the news that a new spin-off in the universe of Ron D. Moore’s Battlestar Galactica is planned, this seems a good time to look at just a few of the things that made it so special.
The Cylons
Perhaps the single biggest change between the 1978 series and the 2003 "re-imagining" is the nature of the Cylons.

Writer-director Paul Dano and Ed Oxenbould on the set of ‘Wildlife’.
Ed Oxenbould rates his role in Paul Dano’s Wildlife, in which he stars alongside Carey Mulligan and Jake Gyllenhaal, as among his favourites.
In the film, Oxenbould plays 14-year-old Joe, who has just moved to Montana with his parents Jeannette (Mulligan) and Jerry (Gyllenhaal). The ‘60s set coming-of-age tale centres on him as their marriage slowly disintegrates.
Oxenbould tells If that Joe is a complex, interesting character, who was bolstered through the writing of Dano and partner Zoe Kazan, who adapted Richard Ford’s novel of the same name.
“It was really different to anything I’d done before. It required a lot of emotion and a lot of watching, a lot of observing. That’s what made it seem really interesting; I thought it would be a great challenge.”

Do you all remember how every episode of Ronald D. Moore's SyFy series Battlestar Galactica series started out? Here's a reminder:
“The Cylons were created by man. They rebelled. They evolved. There are many copies. And they have a plan.”
Well, turns out that the Cylons never had a plan! Moore recently showed up at the Atx Television Festival with several other members of the cast of the classic series to talk about it. According to The Los Angeles Times, who was in attendance, Moore revealed that the Cylons had no plan, and the only reason that they used that text at the beginning of the show was because it sounded cool.
Moore said this was, essentially, just something co-executive producer David Eick thought sounded cool, that audiences would love and that they could figure out later. They never did and, said Moore, “For the next 14 years of my...

Beyond the 19 films and TV shows that make up official on-screen “Star Trek” canon, there are quite a few more efforts that could, philosophically, be a part of this list.
There’s the rich legacy of officially licensed novels and comic books that brought the characters to life in print form. There’s the technology invented by production designers that eventually became real-life wizardry. There’s the 1999 film “Galaxy Quest” — technically a parody, but spiritually one of the best “Star Trek” movies ever made.

Producer and screenwriter Lisa Joy (HBO's "Westworld") will pen the upcoming film adaptation of Glen Larson's 1978 sci-fi TV series "Battlestar Galactica" for Universal Pictures and Bluegrass Films.
The story takes place in a distant corner of the universe known as the Twelve Colonies. The human civilization inhabiting the colonies has been in a war with the Cylons, and after being virtually wiped out by the cybernetic race, the surviving humans are forced to live on spaceships.
Francis Lawrence is reportedly circling the project, but there is no official attachment at this time. Scott Stuber and Dylan Clark will produce.
The film is separate to the multiple award-winning four season-long Sci-Fi Channel series from Ronald D. Moore and David Eick.

If you’ve watched TV in the past 10 years, chances are you know Bear McCreary’s music. He’s become one of the most (if not the most) sought-after and prolific composers in television, ever since he came into his own writing the boundary-pushing score for the reimagined Battlestar Galactica series. He counts The Walking Dead, Outlander, Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles, and Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. among his credits. And this March theater-goers got to experience his music with a big screen presentation; he composed the chilling and thrilling score for J.J. Abrams’ 10 Cloverfield Lane. Today McCreary is juggling so many projects that he can’t count all his current TV shows and movies and video games — “I can’t even tell. I honestly don’t even know,” how many projects he’s in the midst of, he said during an interview at Cafe Laurent in Culver City, CA. The...

CBS has committed to an original historical drama series about the 16th century Hungarian countess and infamous serial killer, Elizabeth Bathory. Deadline reports the series, Bathory, comes from the creative team of David Eick, formally an executive producer for Battlestar Galactica, and producer Joel Silver.
Known as the "Blood Countess," Bathory has quite the evil reputation. She maintains the record for "most prolific female murderer" with the highest number of victims estimated at 650. In folklore and popular culture, she is most often depicted as a vampiric figure, bathing in the blood of young women in order to retain a youth-like appearance. For centuries, she's been the inspiration behind several works of literature, film, music, and even video games. However, this will be the first time her story will be set on the small screen.
No news yet on the project's airdate.

This review contains spoilers.
5.10 Reborn
If you've stuck around for all five seasons of Falling Skies, the ending of the show won't come as a surprise to you. Nor will the beginning of the show, for that matter. Falling Skies loves its big, dramatic speeches, and the finale episode won't leave fans of voiceover or dramatic monologue disappointed. Indeed, the finale pushes in more speeches than battles, which for a show promising a climactic battle, is more than a little disappointing. But what's left to say about Falling Skies' final season other than to acknowledge it as a lost opportunity?
Yes, Falling Skies stays true to its corny roots, in spite of the promise of bloodshed and a war to end all wars and all that good stuff. The deus-ex-machina weapon is ready,...

Grr, argh. Sit, Ubu, sit. I made this! What’s the story behind the production company tags added onto our favourite TV shows?
Closing logos have evolved into a TV production company’s tiny stamp of individuality. They’re a single snippet of screen time not at the mercy of network notes, audience feedback or sponsorship concerns.
A closing tag doesn’t need to sell a show, tell a story, or lasso an audience back for the next episode. It’s simply a signature, a few seconds entirely belonging to the creatives, to do with what they will.
As such, closing logos are as self-indulgent or esoteric as the production company wills them. They’re perhaps the only place in television production where in-jokes, family photos, personal homages (or extended rants in the case of one comedy producer) and kid-drawn scribbles usually found taped to the fridge door are entirely welcome.

Since John Pope first appeared on “Falling Skies” in the series’ second episode, he has been one of the TNT show’s most fun and fascinating characters to watch. In an alien invasion apocalypse, he’s the bad boy looking out for number one, a cynical nuisance, a thorn in Tom Mason’s side. But he’s also been a vital member of the 2nd Mass, loyal to his gang, a badass alien killer, and he even has his heart of gold moments. He’s sometimes an anti-hero character we love to hate — whenever he’s causing trouble within the 2nd Mass as if a war against aliens isn’t trouble enough — but he also comes to reveal struggles and a past that makes him rather relatable. Played by Colin Cunningham, Pope got a love interest in season 4. Sara (Mira Sorvino) has changed Pope, and that’s clearer than ever in the most recent episodes.

Steven Spielberg-produced alien invasion show “Falling Skies” had its final Comic-Con panel today, as the show nears its series finale later this summer. The show graduated from a smaller room at the San Diego Convention Center where its cast was the past few years, to Ballroom 20, which holds about 5,000 people. It was a panel that got plenty of laughs and cheers from that crowd and that showed off the charm, intelligence and humor that this cast has. Read on for highlights from the “Falling Skies” panel. Hal has a particularly “nasty,” “bloody” scene coming up soon — maybe with Pope? Drew Roy teased a scene for his character that’s in episode 5 this season. Here’s how he described it. Falling Skies commences its ten-episode final season with an entertaining uptick in violence...

5.1 Find Your Warrior
In season four of Falling Skies, Battlestar Galactica veteran David Eick took over as showrunner and producer, and the show shifted subtly from a Revolutionary War parallel to a more traditional war story. Now, with the final season locked in for ten episodes, Eick is promsing even more chaos and carnage, transitioning from the Revolution to Vietnam. He's even gone as far as to call the last season of Falling Skies 'Apocalypse Now on crystal meth'. The family drama is getting put by the wayside for some good, old-fashioned alien murder, or so we're promised.
That remains to be seen, but after watching the first episode of the season, I can say that there is a very high body count and for once, Falling Skies doesn't trade bloodshed for speeches—you get both,...

“Falling Skies” began as a loose allegory for the American Revolutionary War when the alien invasion TV show first aired in 2011. Humans are fighting on their own turf for independence from extraterrestrials. That analogy evolved, as the finale of season 2 gave viewers their first look at the Volm, a species of alien who act rather like the French do for the Patriots, coming to the aid of the Earthlings. Say good morning, Vietnam, season 5. Showrunner David Eick describes the final season as “‘‘Apocalypse Now’ on crystal meth.” It’s a season of more moral ambiguity. It’s a season when characters push themselves to their absolute limits. The entire series has blended elements of sci-fi, war show, horror and family drama, but for season 5 there will be more focus on “war tales” and “combat stories,” said Eick, the “Battlestar Galactica” alum who came aboard “Falling Skies” as showrunner for season...
