The late Norman Lear’s life and legacy took center stage tonight at the 2023 Sentinel Awards at the Writers Guild Theater in Beverly Hills.
The awards, which celebrate the storytellers behind some of the year’s most impactful stories, heard a statement from Lyn Lear read at the start of the show by Marty Kaplan, founding director of the Norman Lear Center.
“I would have been there tonight if not for the passing of our beloved Norman. He was so proud of the work of The Lear Center and Hollywood Health and Society. And he would not have wanted all of us to mourn. He would want us to celebrate the important shows you are honoring tonight, and most of all… he would want us to laugh.”
The night celebrated Lear’s lasting impact on television and the world, underlining his strong advocacy that television and storytelling makes a difference.

In a sad bit of coincidence, the Hollywood, Health & Society at the USC Annenberg Norman Lear Center honored its 2023 Sentinel Awards winners on Wednesday night, just hours after the passing of its namesake and inspiration, the legendary Norman Lear.
Emmy-winning comedian and writer Larry Wilmore hosted the event and introduced this year’s 11 winners, including writers behind the series “Mrs. Davis,” “Fleishman is in Trouble” and “Tiny Beautiful Things.” But before the awards were handed out, Wilmore took a moment to pay tribute to Lear. And remarks from Lear’s wife, Lyn, were shared with the audience.
“Well you got to say this about Norman – the man knew how to make an exit,” Wilmore joked. “He knew his audience. And wanted us to make sure we were all listening.
“A giant has left us and we’re going to do him proud,” he added. “This evening meant a lot...

‘Superman & Lois’ consistently ranked among the top CW superhero shows, opting to distance itself from the Arrowverse and carve out its unique identity. Despite maintaining a strong and steady viewership with solid ratings, the threat of cancellation loomed over the show even before the conclusion of its third season.
Although the series primarily delves into characters and Superman’s family life, its production costs remain high. As the narrative evolved, the focus shifted away from superhero action scenes, a trend that continued over time.
The acquisition of CW by Nexstar brought about a restructuring of the network, leading to the cancellation of several shows. Miraculously, ‘Superman & Lois’ survived this upheaval, but not without changes. Just days before the Season 3 finale, news broke that the show would continue under new leadership, albeit with budget cuts in tow.
The upcoming fourth season will undergo significant alterations, with a shortened episode count of only ten.

Tyler Hoechlin in ‘Superman & Lois’
The CW’s confirmed that Superman & Lois starring Tyler Hoechlin (Teen Wolf) and Elizabeth Tulloch (Grimm) will wrap up with the upcoming fourth season. The superhero action series was the last remaining holdout from The CW’s old comic-book-inspired primetime lineup that included Arrow, The Flash, Legends of Tomorrow, Black Lightning, Supergirl, Batwoman, Stargirl, and Gotham Knights.
Season four will consist of just 10 episodes and is expected to air in 2024.
“While we’re sad to say goodbye to Superman & Lois at the end of Season Four, we’re grateful for the time we’ve had with our amazing cast, crew, vfx teams, editors, musical geniuses, and writers. Since the day this show was first discussed, it was about family. And that’s what was created—on and off screen,” stated executive producers and co-showrunners Todd Helbing and Brent Fletcher.”

Superman & Lois Season 3 Episode 2
The latest episode of Superman & Lois, “Uncontrollable Forces,” is perhaps the most emotional of the entire series. It’s a drastic shift from the relatively lighthearted season premiere, as the mystery of what’s going on with Lois Lane is revealed in dramatic fashion: she’s not pregnant, and she’s not suffering from some fictional alien illness, but the all-too-real menace of breast cancer. The decision to undertake this storyline wasn’t one taken lightly by the cast or crew.
“We just felt like it’s such an important thing to discuss,” Superman & Lois co-showrunner Brent Fletcher tells me. “Lois Lane is such an iconic character, we feel like now that the audience knows this family, we can show the audience what this journey is really like. We built everything in service to that story…And very intentionally,...

Superman & Lois is on one of its scheduled breaks at the moment, but don’t you worry, because it will be back soon enough! “Lois (Elizabeth Tulloch) is worried about Jordan (Alex Garfin) as he and Sarah (Inde Navarrette) continue to grow closer. Meanwhile, Clark (Tyler Hoechlin) pays Lana (Emmanuelle Chriqui) a visit. Lastly, Jonathan (Jordan Elsass) has been spending more and more time with John Henry (Wole Parks). Erik Valdez, Dylan Walsh and Adam Rayner also star.”

Agents of Shield, Season 2, Episode 19: “The Dirty Half Dozen”
Written by Brent Fletcher and Drew Z. Greenberg
Directed by Kevin Tancharoen
Airs Tuesdays at 9pm (Et) on ABC
After an overloaded plot in “The Frenemy of My Enemy”, nitpicky writing inconsistencies in “Melinda”, and Lincoln’s exposition dump in “Afterlife”, Agents of Shield delivers one of the best episodes of the show so far with “The Dirty Half Dozen”. Picking up right where “The Frenemy of My Enemy” leaves off, Gordon rescues Skye and Calvin and brings them back to Afterlife. When he returns for Lincoln, however, he is injured and narrowly escapes being captured by Hydra. Skye is determined to rescue Lincoln, despite Jiaying’s objections, and she returns to Shield to save Deathlok and Lincoln. As always, other characters, including Coulson and Gonzales, have hidden agendas and their own reasons for agreeing to the mission.

Agents of Shield, Season 2, Episode 14: “Love in the Time of Hydra”
Written by Brent Fletcher
Directed by Jesse Bochco
Airs Tuesdays at 9pm (Et) on ABC
“Love in the Time of Hydra” is an episode that is over quickly and leaves one wanting more, in the best way. More Ward/Agent 33 Pulp Fiction tributes, more Fitz calling out Simmons, and especially more Edward James Olmos. More Edward James Olmos is always welcome.
The pacing in “Love in the Time of Hydra” is brisk, despite the episode being set-up heavy. Big chunks of exposition are much more palatable when delivered by Edward James Olmos, who plays Robert Gonzales, the leader of Other Shield. Olmos is the perfect choice to lead Coulson’s opposition. He is steely but soft-spoken, weary but wise, and strong. He doesn’t want to go after Coulson, but he believes it is absolutely necessary for the greater good.

Spartacus: Blood and Sand, Season 1: Episode 7 – “Great and Unfortunate Things”
Written by Brent Fletcher & Steven S. DeKnight
Directed by Jesse Warn
Originally aired March 12th, 2010 on Starz
While this episode’s title reminds us that great things are destined for Spartacus, “Great and Unfortunate Things” focuses more on the unfortunate things in the wake of Sura’s murder. The tremors are not limited to Spartacus himself, either. Spartacus as a series has proven to be so much more than its central character that it’s no surprise that nearly everyone’s lives are altered here in a way that doesn’t have to be related to Spartacus’ own demons. One of the episode’s central ideas is how the gods play a role in people’s lives. That lack of autonomy extends throughout this story and shows just how defenseless some people are to their own fates.

Spartacus: Blood and Sand, Season 1: Episode 3 – “Legends”
Written by Brent Fletcher
Directed by Grady Hall
Originally aired February 5th, 2010
“In the world of a gladiator, a man’s fame and glory constructs its own truth.”
Though Spartacus claims interest in neither fame nor glory, “Legends” submerges him into the storied tradition of the gladiator he is being trained to become. As the episode opens, Spartacus dons what little attire he has, wrapping Sura’s cloth around his arm in a scene that plays like a pre-fight ritual for one of the legends of the arena. Though “Legends” is designed to make it clear that Spartacus is not that person–not yet, at least–it’s no small step in the man’s journey. To become something great, one must understand and appreciate greatness. That is the logic in Spartacus, which doesn’t let its characters taste glory for very long without deserving it.

Plot:
An undercover Simmons finds herself in a jam when Hydra begin a security crackdown, led by the beautiful and deadly Bobby Morse. And Raina is also feeling the pressure as she is caught in the grips of both Daniel Whitehall and Skye’s Father.
Verdict:
Things are certainly heating up with Agents of Shield right now as the tension and stakes continue to rise with each and every episode, which just comes to show how far the series has changed since it’s lacklustre first season (the strong run of final episodes does not save the entire season).
First I have to say that Adrianne Palicki was really good as Bobbi Morse (who in the comics is known as Mockingbird, an agent of Shield and Avenger) and we got to see two sides to her character in her introductory episode. We...

Agents of Shield, Season 1, Episode 18, “Providence”
Written by Brent Fletcher
Directed by Milan Cheylov
Airs Tuesdays at 8pm Est on ABC
In the aftermath of Shield’s destruction, Agents of Shield splits “Providence” between the remaining members of Coulson’s team trying to figure out what is next and Ward and Garrett heading off to the Fridge for evil plotting and mustache-twirling. At first, Coulson wants to go completely off the grid, but he rethinks this plan when he discovers glowing coordinates on his Shield badge. He believes the coordinates are a clue from Fury himself as to where to go and how to find him. May, however, thinks that Coulson isn’t thinking clearly in the aftermath of Shield’s demise, and she worries that his decisions are putting everyone else in danger.
“Turn, Turn, Turn” and Captain America: Winter Soldier are both action-heavy, but “Providence” is more about the laughs.

Agents of Shield, Season 1, Episode 11, “The Magical Place”
Written by Paul Zbyszewski and Brent Fletcher
Directed by Kevin Hooks
In an early scene of “The Magical Place”, Fitz yells out to Simmons, his better half/Wonder Twin, “It’s time, Simmons. Embrace the change.” It is a strange bit of dialogue that feels more like a message to the audience of Agents of Shield than a line meant to move the plot along. For a show that is still in its first season, Agents of Shield has been oddly stagnant. There are only two episodes left in the show’s initial 13-episode order, and the mystery of what happened to Agent Coulson has still not been solved. Fitz is signaling to the audience that change is coming and to brace themselves for revelations, but the question is whether those revelations are too little and too late.
