Film Bazaar: Experts warn not to rush into plans for a national film tax incentive.
India shouldn’t rush into the ultra competitive world of film finance incentives, experts said at a Film Facilitation Office (Ffo) workshop yesterday.
“We’re not thinking about incentives right now, you’ve got to get your ground beneath your feet first,” said Vikramjit Roy, head of India’s new Film Facilitation Office. “Once we create a film friendly environment the second step will be incentives. We don’t want to rush things.”
Uday Singh [pictured], MD of the India chapter of the MPAA bemoaned the fact that even some Indian productions were leaving the country because “it’s cheaper to make films abroad than here.” Even India-set British TV show Indian Summers shot in Malaysia because of the 30% incentive there.

The first season of the “drama with a comedy touch” shot this year in Delhi and will air on Sweden’s Svt starting in early January 2017; producer Malte Forssell told Screen here at Film Bazaar that if the series is well received the second season could shoot later in 2017.
The story is about a 50-year-old Swedish cultural journalist, Goran (played by Björn Kjellman), visiting India who befriends a local man, Yogi (Joy Sengupta), and his family.
Author Mikael Bergstrand has written a series of three bestselling books about the adventures of of Goran and Yogi.
“The idea from the beginning is that you can create more episodes based on the friendships across these cultures,” Forssell said.

Film Bazaar: India’s Film Facilitation Office has helped install 50 film-specific nodal officers in government agencies; web portal coming in 2017.
Since India’s first Film Facilitation Office (Ffo) was announced at last year’s Film Bazaar, 50 nodal officers have been appointed by various state and central government departments to act as filming contacts in their geographic regions or areas of expertise.
There are 36 nodal officers at the state level, and then officers nominated a range of ministries and departments including those that govern railways, the environment, archeological sites, and animal welfare.
“An international filmmaker or a domestic filmmaker can have a single contact to help deal with issues that confront filmmakers,” said Vikramjit Roy, head of the Ffo.

LONDON -- Scandinavian production and distribution company Svensk Filmindustri sealed a three-year first-look deal with Swedish- and Danish-based production company Early Bird Films, the companies said Monday. Through the deal, signed for an undisclosed amount, SF will have first look on distribution and co-production potential on all new projects aimed at the Nordic market from Early Bird Films, a film and television production house. Early Bird, with offices in Copenhagen and Stockholm, is developing a slate of film and TV projects and has Danish producers Ole Sondberg and Lars Sund Duus under its company wing. They have previously produced movies based on the crime novels by the writing team Sjowall & Wahloo. The company also includes Swedish producer Malte Forssell, who has worked with Lars von Trier (Dancer in the Dark), Thomas Vinterberg (It's All About Love) and Lukas Moodysson (Lilja 4-Ever).
