Exclusive: The novel Next to Heaven hit the market this week. Written by Anonymous, it’s a social satire that is being shopped by WME simultaneously for both a publishing deal and a TV deal. The TV deal has just closed, and the publishing deal will be next.
The rights to turn the book into a TV series were snapped up by former Agbo and Chernin executive Mike Larocca and Michael Schaefer for their as yet-unnamed production venture. They will produce with Entertainment 360’s Guymon Casady (Game of Thrones). Schaefer most recently ran New Regency and produced The Martian.
So, who is Anonymous?

This post contains spoilers for Baby Reindeer, which is now streaming on Netflix.
It takes less than two minutes into Netflix’s Baby Reindeer for the words “this is a true story” to appear onscreen. This simple phrase, when used in pop culture, adds an extra level of emotional weight that tales sold as wholly fictional don’t get: Sure, your imagination can invent something crazy, but can you believe this thing actually happened to someone?!?!

Sam Taylor-Johnson’s best film to date is more interested in romance and creativity than demons or blame
‘Her demons were probably worse’: does Back to Black reveal the real Amy Winehouse?
The last time Sam Taylor-Johnson directed a movie about drugs it was A Million Little Pieces in 2019, based on James Frey’s notoriously inauthentic memoir of addiction – and the last time she made a film about a music legend it was Nowhere Boy in 2009, about John Lennon.
Now she brings the two together in what’s easily her best work so far: an urgent, warm, heartfelt dramatisation, scripted by Matt Greenhalgh, of the life of Amy Winehouse, the brilliant London soul singer who died of alcohol poisoning at 27 in 2011. It’s a movie with the simplicity, even the naivety, of a fan-tribute. But there’s a thoroughly engaging and sweet-natured performance from Marisa Abela as Amy – though...

DreamWorks Animation has delivered a Halloween treat: gateway horror series “Fright Krewe” has been renewed for a second season.
Look for the supernatural war brewing in New Orleans to continue when Season 2 comes to Hulu and Peacock in 2024.
“Fright Krewe” is Created and Executive Produced by Eli Roth & James Frey. The series is also Executive Produced by Joanna Lewis and Kristine Songco.
In the 10-episode series, ” An ancient prophecy and a Voodoo Queen put misfit teens in charge of saving New Orleans from the biggest demonic threat it’s faced in almost two centuries. But, honestly? Saving the world might be easier than becoming friends.”
The first season of 10 episodes recently debuted on Hulu and Peacock on October 2. In my review, I wrote that the inaugural season “offers enough supernatural charm, heart, and whimsy to endear Soleil and her friends to viewers, hoping to see their ascension to full hero in the future.

The historic city of New Orleans also happens to be one of the most haunted and rich in supernatural folklore. That makes it the perfect setting for “Fright Krewe,” an animated gateway horror series from creators/executive producers Eli Roth and James Frey. The 10-episode inaugural season charms for its adolescent spin on Voodoo, folklore, and a demonic ancient prophecy that’s never quite as scary as high school.
Soleil (Sydney Mikayla) loves New Orleans for its open embrace of all things spooky. That love also means she’s a bit of an outsider at school. Soleil is comfortable as a loner, but that changes when an ancient prophecy gets triggered by the awakening of a dormant demon. Soleil, along with fellow peers Maybe (Tim Johnson Jr.), Missy (Grace Lu), Stanley (Chester Rushing), and Pat (Terrence Little Gardenhigh), is tasked by Loa spirits with the job of saving the city.

Eli Roth is looking to make 2023 a prolific year for horror, at least on his terms. In addition to the release of Thanksgiving – which we’ve been waiting to see for more than 15 years now –he is also behind the upcoming animated series Fright Krewe. Now, we have a trailer for that DreamWorks production.
While there is blood, voodoo, the undead, and more in the trailer, that Fright Krewe is an animated series and comes from the company that brought us Shrek and that little boy fishing from the moon shows that Eli Roth is ready to broaden his horror horizons. And whether you like his movies or not, Roth is one of the foremost historians of the genre and does objectively deserve respect in that regard. But can he handle animation?

"He's a demon who feeds off fear!" "We can't stop that!" Peacock / Hulu have unveiled the first trailer for a new animated series mainly aimed at kids titled Fright Krewe, created by DreamWorks Animation. The concept is from Eli Roth and writer James Frey, and the series takes place in New Orleans, described as one of the spookiest animated series created by DreamWorks so far. Genre regular Eli Roth has another horror project coming our way – but this one won’t be nearly as brutal or bloody as the likes of Cabin Fever or Hostel. Instead, it’s some “gateway horror” entertainment that comes in the form of an animated series called Fright Krewe. Said to be aimed at “older children”, the first season of Fright Krewe will consist of ten episodes that will be released through both the Hulu and Peacock streaming services. A premiere date has not yet been announced.
The Wrap reports that Roth has teamed up with Dreamworks and author James Frey to bring this series to the screen – and they also point out that Frey is a rather controversial figure. His books A Million Little Pieces and My Friend Leonard were initially marketed as memoirs, but it was soon revealed that large portions of them were either exaggerated or made up.

Shia Labeouf grew up in front of cameras. The actor made his acting debut at age 12 in an episode of "Caroline in the City" before getting a main role in the Disney Channel sitcom "Even Stevens," which lasted for 65 episodes and a movie. Say what you will about his personal life, his stunts, or his career, but he still was the star of an "Indiana Jones" movie, for better and worse. But before he played Indy's son, he was a child actor, with all the problems that come with the territory.
The reality of child stars is a difficult one, as people like Jennette McCurdy ("iCarly") have reminded us in recent times. Abuse by loved ones and by a cold, calculating industry aren't out of the ordinary, unfortunately, and Labeouf used his own experiences as a child actor to write the pseudo-autobiographical Sundance darling "Honey Boy."

This year’s list was compiled from suggestions of over 375 film executives, who contributed up to 10 feature screenplays that were written in, or somehow uniquely associated with 2020 and will not begin principal photography during the year. Scripts had to receive mentions from at least seven of those executives to be included on this year’s Black List.
The first survey was released in 2005. Since then many of the included scripts have gone on to be produced, often to great acclaim. Among the most notable entries are “Argo,” “Spotlight,” “Juno,” “American Hustle,” “Slumdog Millionaire,” and “The Revenant.” Recent Black List-appearing films include Melina Matsoukas’s 2019 movie “Queen & Slim,” written by Lena Waithe with a story co-authored by James Frey, which was featured on the 2018 Black List; and Emerald Fennell’s “Promising Young Woman,...

Producer and recording artist Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson is partnering with Eli Roth and entertainment studio 3BlackDot for a three-picture feature film deal. The deal expands Power player Jackson’s G-Unit Film & Television in the horror film space.
Jackson’s G-Unit will team with the Arts District Entertainment, Roth’s banner with Roger Birnbaum and Michael Besman. The deal, according to G-Unit and 3-BlackDot, involves an “8-figure investment in 50 Cent and G-Unit Film & Television from 3BlackDot.” The latter will act as financier and studio across all the films.
The three entities will collaborate on each film, while utilizing 3Blackdot’s in-house resources in gaming, publishing, and merchandise to build out entertainment properties. Agnes Varda is most celebrated as the lovable storyteller of “Faces/Places” and the New Wave auteur behind “Cleo from 5 to 7,” but in 1968, her career took a detour. While husband Jacques Demy was shooting “Model Shop” in Los Angeles, Varda hung around the Bay Area to make two half-hour documentaries about the Black Panther Party and its efforts to free Huey P. Newton from prison.
“Huey” provides a dramatic collection of footage surrounding the campaign to free Newton after he was jailed for allegedly shooting police office James Frey. However, “Black Panthers” digs deeper into the circumstances surrounding the rallies to explore the nature of the Black Panther Party itself.
The result is a sobering account of the group’s activist intent, delivered almost entirely in its own words. Beyond the striking contrast to the vilification of the Black Panther Party in American media at the time, Varda’s absorbing...

A young couple on an awkward first date become counterculture fugitives in this powerful directorial debut
This arresting debut feature from Melina Matsoukas – Grammy-award winning director of Beyoncé’s Formation video, whose television CV includes Master of None and Insecure – puts new twists on familiar outlaw riffs that can be traced back through Badlands and Bonnie and Clyde to À bout de souffle and beyond. Boasting outstandingly empathic performances from dynamite screen presence Daniel Kaluuya (Oscar-nominated for Get Out) and rising star Jodie Turner-Smith, in a career-making first feature lead, it’s an intoxicatingly lawless lovers-on-the-run romance played out against the politically charged backdrop of racially divided modern America.
Shot in a dreamy natural light by Tat Radcliffe, who did such remarkable work on French-Algerian director Yann Demange’s Belfast-set ’71, and sensuously scored by Devonté Hynes (aka Blood Orange), Queen & Slim immerses its audience in an unfolding road-movie fable. While...

A first date spirals out of control after the pair are pulled over by a racist cop in this sexy, exuberant and anarchic drama
Big, charismatic performances and exuberant energy keep this movie on the road. It’s a serio-comic Bonnie-and-Clyde adventure, written by Lena Waithe and James Frey (still notorious for his faux memoir A Million Little Pieces) and directed by former music video specialist Melinda Matsoukas.
Daniel Kaluuya brings his seductive air of politely quizzical irony to the role of Slim, a guy who has managed to get a Tinder date with someone way out of his league. This is a beautiful, smart lawyer named Queen, played by Jodie Turner-Smith, who is richer and taller than he is – though this latter disparity is never remarked on – and only went out with him on a whim because his profile picture was so appealingly pathetic. Driving her home after their highly uncomfortable dinner,...

Aaron, 29, and Sam Taylor-Johnson, 52, are no strangers to working together, having met making Sam’s directorial debut Nowhere Boy in 2009 — but adapting James Frey’s controversial 2003 book A Million Little Pieces marked challenging new territory for the married couple.
The film adaptation of Frey’s addiction memoir, which he later admitted to partly fabricating, sees Aaron go to some very dark places to play a young drug-addled writer as he undergoes a grueling two-month detox program.
Below are excepts from People’s conversation with the pair, who wed in 2012 and have two daughters together now, in addition to two from Sam’s previous marriage.

The 15th annual Black List survey was revealed Monday December 16, and it includes 66 un-produced screenplays from up-and-coming literary talent. Results were pooled from a survey of more than 250 film executives, each of whom contributed the names of up to 10 favorite scripts that were written in, or are somehow uniquely associated with, 2019 and will not have begun principal photography during this calendar year. This year, scripts had to receive at least six mentions to be included on the Black List.
Since 2005, more than a third of the screenplays included in the annual Black List surveys have become produced films, and often to notoriety — such as “Argo,” “American Hustle,” “Juno,” “The King’s Speech,” “Slumdog Millionaire,” “Spotlight,” “The Revenants,” “The Descendants,” and “Hell or High Water.” Melina Matsoukas’s 2019 film “Queen & Slim,” written by Lena Waithe with a story co-authored by James Frey, was featured on the 2018 Black List.

Even if you haven’t actually read “A Million Little Pieces,” you’ve likely heard of it. A runaway bestseller and Oprah’s Book Club selection first released in 2003, James Frey’s purported memoir became a literary scandal when it was revealed to have been largely fabricated; the ensuing controversy saw Random House offer refunds and Oprah excoriate Frey on live television.
Sam Taylor-Johnson and Aaron Taylor-Johnson have made a film adaptation of the book well over a decade later, collaborating on the script with her behind the camera and him in front of it. To say that the filmmakers didn’t strike while the iron was hot would be an understatement, but the film isn’t entirely without its merits.
You know the setup: our substance-abusing hero hits rock bottom, gets sent to rehab despite refusing to admit he has a problem, makes life miserable for everyone trying to help him,...

During the ensuing fallout once James Frey’s memoir A Million Little Pieces was exposed as a fabrication well beyond his statement admitting to having altered “small details” of his past, it was discovered that the author had tried getting it published as fiction to no avail. Random House, the place that ultimately printed it and watched its ascent to the number one bestseller slot thanks to a coveted spot on Oprah Winfrey’s Book Club list, was supposedly one of the establishments that rejected it back then too. The reason is simple: nothing that happens is unique to what we’ve already read or seen before countless other times. What finally made it worthwhile was the veracity it couldn’t uphold. Cliché can be forgiven if born from truth. This wasn’t.

For over a decade, the deceptions and fallacies driving the “memoir” from which Sam Taylor-Johnson’s A Million Little Pieces is based have been well-documented and well-scrutinized. Nevertheless, author James Frey has been awarded an onscreen presentation which, with the exception of a piddling, but apt Mark Twain quote – “I’ve lived through some terrible things in my life, some of which actually happened” – pardons his deceitful intent and inserts itself into the growing pool of films which attempt to explore the horrendous consequences and gripping immobility caused by drug addiction.
This foundation of falsehoods may lend itself very heavily to the film’s own unscrupulous experience; buoyed heavily by rehashed struggles, its overall unoriginality is only occasionally dampened by the wholly dedicated performance from Aaron Taylor-Johnson, the director’s co-writer and husband. He plays the James Frey that the mischievous source author wanted people to come to know. Following an explosive opening,...

On the surface, a film hyped as a “black ‘Bonnie and Clyde'” written and directed by first-time feature filmmakers, might be considered a less attractive risk to financiers and distributors, especially at the studio level, even in today’s climate of content excess to meet growing demand.
But for writer Lena Waithe and director Melina Matsoukas, who are also producers on the project, the process of packaging “Queen & Slim” was more seamless than usual.
“We didn’t have to chase anyone because they chased us,” Waithe said of the project. Brad Weston’s Makeready studios won an auction to finance the movie in mid-2018, with Universal Pictures handling marketing and distribution under its existing deal with Weston’s company. “We would walk into meetings, and they would say, ‘Here are all the reasons why you should come to us,'” Waithe said. “It was crazy! It’s going to be a really rich week for Disney’s Frozen 2, so exhibitors expect a lot of popcorn sales.
Let’s start with the build of it all: The pic’s official weekend came in at $130.2M, which as we’ve been sayin’ is the best animated pic launch ever in November. Today, with 41% of K-12 schools out and 14% of colleges, I understand Monday will deliver around $16M for the sequel directed by Jennifer Lee- and Chris Buck. By the end of Thanksgiving, which will see business during the evening shows after dinner, Frozen 2 per industry estimates should stand at $200M stateside; that’s bolstered by all schools being off on Thursday and Friday. Don’t forget, Black Friday is one of the most lucrative moviegoing days of the year. Tack on a second estimated weekend of $84M, -35%, and Frozen 2 could climb to $284M in 10 days.

Some films are easy to discuss. Others are difficult to break down, especially when it comes to their problematic elements. Queen & Slim decidedly falls into the latter category, mixing some really strong moments with a number of issues that holds it back. For all of the strong performances, compelling ideas, and quality cinematography on display, too many of the choices made, particularly in the back half of the movie, sabotage a potential laden tale. Instead of soaring towards the heights of Academy Award contention, it instead sinks down to become an interesting failure. Considering all of the potential here, it’s a definite disappointment. The movie is a drama with a lot to say. At the start, we’re just observing the middle of a forgettable date between two African American individuals. The man (Daniel Kaluuya) and the woman (Jodie Turner-Smith) are not well matched. He works in retail and believes in religion,...

Collaborating for the first time since 2009’s Nowhere Boy, Sam and Aaron Taylor-Johnson are bringing A Million Little Pieces to the screen, a passion project which the married couple wrote together. Sam, who also directed the film, has had a special attachment to the material for years. A bond so strong that even when James Frey, author of the source material, was chastised for fabricating some of the details in his book, Sam was still eager to to tell this story.

It looks like scammers really do prosper because the movie adaptation of James Frey's controversial 2003 bestselling book, A Million Little Pieces, is headed to the big screen.
Boasting a star-studded cast including Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Charlie Hunnam, and Billy Bob Thornton, the film tells the story of 23-year-old James (Taylor-Johnson), an alcoholic and drug addict faced with two options: rehab or death. Like in the memoir - which resulted in scandal when accusations of major embellishment and lies about Frey's experience in rehab came to light - the film follows the main character through his struggle with addiction and recovery as he "heals his broken soul by connecting with other kindred spirits who also yearn and fight for a better life."

In an era where people of color seem to be considered guilty until proven innocent, and the best outcome for them in an encounter with police is just plain surviving, “Queen & Slim” is nothing less than the radical reclaiming of a familiar narrative.
Melina Matsoukas’ feature directorial debut not only reframes a “Bonnie & Clyde”-style outlaws-on-the-run story in thrillingly contemporary, culturally relevant terms, but it also finds a way to do so that combines bracing honesty about a hostile world with lyrical beauty about the relationships that make it endurable.
Daniel Kaluuya and Jodie Turner-Smith are mesmerizing and urgently sexy as the eponymous pair, while a script by Lena Waithe (from a story by Waithe and “A Million Little Pieces” author James Frey) elegantly juxtaposes romantic fantasy, inescapable reality and the legacies — inherited and aspirational — that bond them together.

Going to the movies can feel a lot like agreeing to a blind date: It’s normal to feel a little wary — but also a bit excited — at the potential before agreeing to spend two hours with characters you don’t know. If the film is any good, it wins you over early on, enough so that you stick around to see what happens to these strangers you’ve only just met. But the dynamic works best when there’s instant chemistry, which isn’t always the case — as director Melina Matsoukas (the powerhouse behind Beyoncé’s 65-minute “Lemonade” album-cum-film) discovers in her highly anticipated narrative debut, “Queen & Slim.”

James Frey’s book A Million Little Pieces had accrued warranted scrutiny when it was revealed that the book Frey had himself touted as his “memoir” was, in fact, semi-fictional. The resulting backlash, including from such noted public figures such as Oprah Winfrey, only gave more fuel to the fire, but past the unavoidable controversy, the book does convey a harrowing and remarkable story of a young writer’s trajectory from drug addiction to sobriety and literary success that director Sam Taylor-Johnson (Fifty Shades of Grey) and star/husband Aaron Taylor-Johnson have decided was worth adapting for the big screen. "We're all the same in here... We gotta look out for one another." Momentum Pictures has just released a new red band trailer for the film A Million Little Pieces, an intense addiction drama from husband-wife team: actor Aaron Taylor-Johnson, and director Sam Taylor-Johnson. The two of them co-wrote the screenplay, based on James Frey's memoir about his own experiences with drug addiction. Aaron Taylor-Johnson plays a young drug-addled writer approaching the bottom of his descent who submits to an intense detox at a treatment center in Minnesota. Also starring Charlie Hunnam, Billy Bob Thornton, Juliette Lewis, Giovanni Ribisi, David Dastmalchian, Andy Buckley, Eugene Byrd, Dash Mihok, Odessa Young, and Tom Amandes. This is a lively trailer, nowhere near as somber as the film but still a good sell. Lena Waithe and James Frey's tale of love on the run finally has its first trailer, and it's a damn good one. Queen & Slim follows the journey of the titular characters - played by big-screen newcomer Jodie Turner-Smith and Get Out's Daniel Kaluuya, respectively - as the two meet up for a first date that goes horrifically awry when they get pulled over for a minor traffic infraction. When the situation quickly goes left, Slim shoots a police officer in self-defense, and the two flee for their lives, setting off a perilous chain of events.
Directed by well-known music video director Melina Matsoukas (who also helmed the acclaimed Master of None episode "Thanksgiving" and several episodes of Insecure), the film calls back to dynamic film duos like Thelma and Louise and, of course, Bonnie and Clyde. But if the first look tells us anything, Queen & Slim is...
