Beyoncé almost teamed up with prolific filmmaker Clint Eastwood for his own take on A Star Is Born. The veteran actor had a lot of praise for the Grammy winner, so much so that he compared her to another well-known musician.

HBO Max is delving into the life of one of the more infamous figures in Hollywood’s recent history.
The streamer is developing a drama based on the life of Heidi Fleiss, the former “Hollywood Madam” who ran a prostitution ring that had a number of high-profile clients. The project comes from writer and executive producer Maggie Cohn (The Staircase), with Fleiss serving as a consultant on the project.
Fleiss was arrested on a number of prostitution charges in 1993, and her trial on the charges was a media sensation. Though Fleiss herself never revealed names of her clients, Charlie Sheen testified that he had used Fleiss’ services numerous times; Australian media mogul Kerry Packer was also named during the trial.
Fleiss was convicted in state court, though that was overturned after an appeals court ruled jurors had swapped votes to avoid a deadlock. She was convicted on separate federal charges...

Comic book collectors of the 1990s remember one particular pop culture milestone well. DC Comics, in one of the best-publicized comic book events ever, advertised that Superman -- the stalwart central figure of the entire genre -- was going to die. Television news reports covered the event, and fans were interested in the character like never before. Comic book stores had lines around the block to pick up a copy of Superman #75, which came sealed in a black plastic bag emblazoned with a dripping, bloody Superman symbol. A new monster, Doomsday, was invented to kill Superman, and the Man of Steel was punched to death. Although DC always had a plan to resurrect Superman, readers in 1992 felt that his death might actually be permanent.
However, in the brief period after Superman's death, and prior to his resurrection, DC Comics introduced four new Superman replacement characters. There was a robotic, sunglasses-wearing death bot called The Eliminator.

David Cronenberg dared CinemaCon attendees to sleep well tonight.
The director, an architect of the body horror genre with “A History of Violence,” “Dead Ringers” and “The Fly,” made his first-ever trip to Las Vegas to showcase his next grisly film “Crimes of the Future,” testing the stomachs of movie theater owners across the nation.
“It seems an appropriate place to launch our attack on the world with ‘Crimes of the Future,'” Cronenberg told the crowd at Caesars Palace in reference to Sin City.
Though Cronenberg says he started writing the screenplay 20 years ago, Neon, the film’s distributor, called “Crimes of the Future” an “evolution of David’s work: past, present and future.” Without detailing any specifics, it will contain “key references to his previous films.”

The project is based on Leigh Montville’s “Sting Like a Bee: Muhammad Ali vs. The United States of America.” The book centers on the cultural and political implications of Ali’s refusal of service in the military on the basis of his Islamic beliefs. It also shows the key moments in a life in exile from the ring as he risks losing everything — his boxing license, his career, even his freedom as he’s forced to take a stand in a battle for racial equality.
“The Last Tree” director Shola Amoo has been signed to direct the film from a script by Phillip Howze, whose credits include Netflix’s “Mindhunter” and “The Eddy.” Alix Madigan (Amazon’s “The Lie”) is producing.

While lots of summer events around the world are opting to go online due to the coronavirus crisis, the Filming Italy Sardegna fest will be holding a physical edition on the island of Sardinia in the Forte Village resort near the capital city of Cagliari, where all guests will undergo complimentary Covid-19 tests upon arrival.
“We consulted with a medical committee and decided to follow a protocol combining two very fast non-invasive [coronavirus] tests to all our guests,” says Tiziana Rocca, the former Taormina Film Festival chief who two years ago launched this international event, which combines film and TV with a strong accent on women in the biz.
Rocca says she never really considered canceling and “talked to lots of U.S. talents” during the lockdown.
Among these is Matt Dillon, who this year is the fest’s honorary president and, luckily is in Italy, so will be able to attend.

The Tokyo International Film Festival will this year give over most of its competition section to films from outside East Asia. This contrasts to previous editions with a strong presence from the region.
The festival, which will hold its 32nd edition next month, announced its lineup Thursday. Of the 14 announced films for competition, only two – Wang Rui’s “Chaogtu With Sarula” (China) and Paul Soriano’s ”Mananita” (Philippines) – are from East Asia.
Korean films are noticeably absent this year, a situation that may reflect the acute political tensions between Tokyo and Seoul.
Others in the competition are Valentyn Vasyanovych’s “Atlantis” and Jorunn Myklebust Syversen’s “Disco,” which both screened at Toronto. The competition also includes Saeid Rustai’s “Just 6.5,” Jayro Bustamante’s “La Llorona,” Nunzia De Stefano’s “Nevia” and Dominik Moll’s “Only the Animals,” which were all pickups from Venice.

“Bumblebee” director Travis Knight has been tapped to direct “The Six Billion Dollar Man,” the modernized update of the 1970s TV series “The Six Million Dollar Man,” for Warner Bros., an individual with knowledge of the project tells TheWrap. Both are based on the novel “Cyborg” by Martin Caidin.

‘Bumblebee’ Director to Tackle ‘Six Billion Dollar Man’ Adaptation for WB, Mark Wahlberg (Exclusive)
Travis Knight has come on board to direct Warner Bros.’ film adaptation of the classic TV show “Six Billion Dollar Man” with Mark Wahlberg attached to star.
Sue Kroll, Bill Gerber and Steve Levinson are producing with Bill DuBuque penning the script.
“The Six Billion Dollar Man” is based on the sci-fi TV series “The Six Million Dollar Man,” which is about a former astronaut, Colonel Steve Austin, portrayed by Lee Majors. Majors’ character, employed as a secret agent, had superhuman strength due to bionic implants. The series ran for five seasons on ABC between 1973 and 1978, and was based on Martin Caidin’s novel “Cyborg.”
The studio bought the rights to the project in 2017 from the Weinstein Company after the studio collapsed and had been looking for a director after Damian Szifron moved on from the project.

After 11 years pushing A Star Is Born as producer though three studio administrations — not counting the earlier iterations with Whitney Houston, Aaliyah, Lauryn Hill and Will Smith he worked on while a Warner Bros exec — Bill Gerber is moving on to other projects. Not surprising, a lot of what he’s working on remains in the realm of music.
One of them solves the lingering mystery of the absence of Neil Young in Woodstock, the 1970 Michael Wadleigh-directed documentary. Last fall’s audience-pleaser is indeed a pleasant surprise, not because it’s a classic but because it isn’t plain awful. An unnecessary third remake of a Depression-era Cinderella story has been concocted to showcase the special talents of Lady Gaga, who indeed comes off as the most personable and deserving star-to-be-born since Judy Garland. Bradley Cooper stunned the industry by wearing almost all the creative hats on this thing — and producing an entertainment that will enhance the careers of all involved.

“A Star Is Born” has missed out on major film prizes from nearly every awards ceremony this year, but it finally brought home some hardware thanks to the 2019 Grammy Awards. The movie’s anthem, “Shallow,” was nominated for four awards and took home two trophies: Best Song Written for Visual Media and Best Pop Duo/Group Performance. Donald Glover’s “This Is America” beat out “Shallow” for Song of the Year and Record of the Year.
The Grammy Award for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance is given to the vocalists of the winning song, which means the prize for “Shallow” netted Cooper his first Grammy Award. With one Grammy under his belt, Cooper has now won more Grammys than such major artists (and infamous Grammy shut-outs) as Bob Marley, Jimi Hendrix, The Who, The Strokes, Patti Smith, Kiss, Journey, and Snoop Dogg. Lady Gaga can’t be in two places at once, especially two awards shows at two different sides of the pond this Sunday: the Grammys in Los Angeles and the BAFTAs in London.
We hear that Gaga will be performing at the Grammys where she is nominated for five awards, four for “Shallow” from A Star Is Born: record of the year, song of the year, best pop duo/group (with Bradley Cooper) performance and best song written for visual media. Her fifth Grammy nom is in the best pop solo performance category for her piano version of “Joanne”.
It would come as no surprise if she sings “Shallow” this Sunday. When the song “Listen” from 2007’s Dreamgirls was up for an Oscar nom, Beyonce took the opportunity to perform that song at the Grammys (the track was written by Henry Krieger and Scott Cutler with lyrics by Anne Preven).

Under executive director Roger Durling, the Santa Barbara International Film Festival (taking place January 30 – February 9) has flourished by riding the awards season wave via starry onstage interviews with Oscar contenders. Every year, screenwriters, directors and producers promote their causes on panels, and the likes of Viggo Mortensen, Rami Malek, Yalitza Aparicio, Glenn Close, Sam Elliott, and Richard E. A few hours ago, the Producers Guild of America threw a bit of a monkey-wrench into the awards season works. Giving out their Producers Guild Awards, the top prize went to Green Book, shooting that controversial film to the front of the Oscar race. The PGA voters always catapult their winners towards Best Picture at the Academy Awards, so it was expected that this would occur here too. Well, it probably has, just with a movie that wasn’t the presumptive top tier with producers. Guess that wasn’t the case, so we need to re-evaluate things a bit. I’ll try to make sense of it all below! PGA went with Peter Farrelly’s Green Book over what seemed like more likely choice in Bradley Cooper’s A Star Is Born and Alfonso Cuaron’s Roma. Green Book wasn’t even necessarily considered next in line, as an upset...

Last year’s Producers Guild Awards told us which movie — “The Shape of Water” — would win the Oscar for Best Picture weeks before the Academy Awards. In fact 20 of the previous winners of this important prize have then gone on to Best Picture victories.
For the 30th annual PGA ceremony slated for Saturday evening, January 19, at the Beverly Hilton, we already know that the top choice will be at the very least a major front-runner for this year’s Oscar. Could it be a blockbuster like “A Star Is Born,” “Bohemian Rhapsody” or “Black Panther”? Or maybe a critical favorite such as “Roma,” “Green Book” or “The Favourite”?

The Producers Guild of America hands out its awards on Saturday, Jan. 19, 2019. That is three days before the academy announces the nominations for the Oscars. While the PGA ceremony is not televised, it is an important stop on the road to the Oscars.
The PGA Awards has an enviable track record at presaging the eventual Best Picture winner at the Academy Awards. The guild and the academy have agreed on 20 of the most recent 29 Best Picture champs, including last year’s double winner. “The Shape of Water.”
Since both groups expanded the Best Picture category, the PGA has predicted 70 of the 81 of the Best Picture nominees over the past nine years. Last year the guild went seven for nine in previewing the Oscars line-up: “Call Me by Your Name,” “Dunkirk,” “Get Out,” “Lady Bird,” “The Post,” “The Shape of Water” and “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri.” The other four guild nominees were “The Big Sick,...
