Masters of the Air is the third World War II miniseries from Steven Spielberg, Tom Hanks and Gary Goetzman, following Band of Brothers and The Pacific. Goetzman said Spielberg’s father had been pushing them to do the series about WWII pilots since their first.
“We had an obligation to Steven’s father,” Goetzman said at Contenders TV. “He was in the Army Air Force. He’d seen Band and The Pacific and say to Steven, ‘Those are great. When are you going to do the pilots? When are you going to do Europe? If we ever did another one that would be it.’ Then Don Miller’s book came along.”

It’s the rare actor has an opportunity to portray a real-life World War II hero and a notorious villain of American history in the space of just a few months, but the Irish-born Anthony Boyle is that guy. He’s king of the prestigious limited series in 2024 in a pair of big-ticket Apple TV+ projects. He was starring as Lieut. Harry Crosby of the Air Force’s famed Bloody Hundredth bomber group in the nine-part, $250 million epic “Masters of the Air” from the team that made “Band of Brothers” and “The Pacific,” Steven Spielberg, Tom Hanks and Gary Goetzman. And a few months after completing filming on that in England, Boyle started work on the seven-part historical drama “Manhunt” portraying no less than John Wilkes Booth, the man who assassinated President Abraham Lincoln. “I wanted to do kind of the opposite of what I’d just done,” Boyle says.

Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks can do no wrong when it comes to media revolving around WWII. Three years after collaborating on one of the best WWII films, Saving Private Ryan, the duo once again joined forces for one of the best WWII series with 2001’s Band of Brothers. The next two decades saw Spielberg and Hanks produce two more companion series to the 2001 acclaimed show, with the recent entry being Masters of the Air.
While not as acclaimed as the original and The Pacific, the 2024 Apple TV+ mini-series excels with its realistic midair combat and perfectly sows the seeds for a potential sequel.

Ever since its premiere on January 26, 2024, fans of Masters of the Air have been fervently following the 100th Bomb Group’s harrowing journey. With production heavyweights like Tom Hanks, Steven Spielberg, and Gary Goetzman, the nine-episode limited series was probably bound for success from the start.
In the Apple TV+ series, Austin Butler and Callum Turner portray Gale Cleven and John Egan, respectively, as best friends. Engrossing the reader in its gripping tale, The Bloody Hundredth, the 100th Bomb Group’s story illustrates the harsh realities of World War Two.
Steven Spielberg’s Masters of the Air
Arguably, Masters of the Air suggests that Spielberg should reconsider his previous attachment to helming a DC movie. Hold on, earlier attempts… DC flick? Yes, it has been revealed that he had attempted to adapt the DC property Blackhawks (the comics superhero team) several years ago.

The Apple TV+ limited series “Masters of the Air” is not exactly lacking in big-name star power. The World War II-era drama is executive produced by Steven Spielberg, Tom Hanks and Gary Goetzman, the powerhouse team behind two previous Emmy-winning series about America’s greatest generation: 2001’s “Band of Brothers” and 2010’s “The Pacific.” And headlining the cast is Austin Butler, fresh off his Oscar-nominated star turn in “Elvis.”
However it is British actor Callum Turner who emerges as the real star of this ensemble drama, which just concluded its nine-episode run. As the free-spirited, occasionally volatile Major John “Bucky” Egan, Turner gives a haunting performance that both anchors “Masters of the Air” and allows the series to take flight.

Masters of the Air was a labor of love for executive producers Gary Goetzman, Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg. The Apple TV+ series marks the third and final installment of the trio’s war drama miniseries, after Band of Brothers and The Pacific.
The series took three years to create and cost between $250 million and $300 million to produce, including a hefty $60 million in Covid compliance costs to film during the pandemic. The result was an epic nine-part series with 325 speaking parts and an amazing cast of up-and-coming actors.
“The best stories are from history,” said Goetzman during a discussion at the Deadline and Apple TV+ event Inside the Finale, joined by series cast members Barry Keoghan, Callum Turner, Rafferty Law, Josiah Cross, Nate Mann and Anthony Boyle. “Nonfiction is always more fascinating than fiction, and there’s no greater stories of human cost, triumph, passion, love… the biggest story of...

“Masters of the Air” soared to become Apple TV+’s highest-watched series launch ever when the first episodes dropped in January. While it might seem like a no-brainer that the team behind “Band of Brothers” and “The Pacific” — including Steven Spielberg, Tom Hanks and Gary Goetzman — would hit it out of the park with a new World War II series, it wasn’t plain sailing, in large part thanks to Covid, which resulted in numerous delays. “It made the production very difficult,” Goetzman told Variety ahead of the series launch.
But also, in keeping with Apple TV+’s low-key publicity strategy, “Masters of the Air” somehow debuted on the streamer with minimal publicity, despite the fact that in the period between being pre- and post-production its key cast, including Austin Butler, Callum Turner, Barry Keoghan and Ncuti Gatwa had been propelled from jobbing actors to leading men.

When it comes to chronicling the bravery of the Greatest Generation during World War II, few if any can claim to have done it better than Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks.
The Oscar-winning duo – whose first project about the Second World War, “Saving Private Ryan,” won Spielberg his second Best Director Oscar and landed Hanks a nomination for Best Actor. They have spent decades cataloging the sacrifice of American soldiers during WWII across multiple acclaimed television projects, including “Band of Brothers” (focused on Army paratroopers) and “The Pacific” (focused on Marines).
This year, Spielberg and Hanks are back again with “Masters of the Air,” the Apple TV+ limited series about the 100th Bomb Group of the Eighth Air Force (also known as the Bloody Hundredth) who flew deadly and dangerous missions over Germany during World War II. When a World War II drama series about airmen features the likes of Austin Butler, Barry Keoghan and Callum Turner, it’s reasonable to presume that one of them would be playing the story’s quintessential hotshot pilot. Instead, that honor belongs to Nate Mann, who portrays Lieutenant Robert “Rosie” Rosenthal, one of the most decorated real-life B-17 pilots to serve in WWII, on Apple TV+’s Masters of the Air. Rosie had already established a successful career as a lawyer in New York until the attack on Pearl Harbor eventually led him to Laredo Air Force Base, where he developed his crack piloting skills.
Knowing full well the significance of Rosenthal both on the screen and in real life, Mann refused to gloss over the details of the B-17 and the many responsibilities that a bomber pilot has before, during and after a flight. So he took the words...

Oscar-winning screenwriter Eric Roth produced a script for a Cher biopic – but the star has rejected the screenplay. More here.
If we go all the way back to May of 2021, it was reported that Cher had given the idea of a biopic of her life story the go ahead. It was being set up at Universal Pictures, and was being produced by Judy Craymer and Gary Goetzman, along with Cher. Craymer and Goetzman had produced Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again, in which Cher has a memorable cameo.
At that point it was announced that Cher’s “dear dear friend”, screenwriter Eric Roth, had been recruited to pen the screenplay. That’s the Eric Roth who won a Best Adapted Screenplay Oscar for Forrest Gump, and who recently matched the record for penning the most films nominated for a Best Picture Academy Award.

As the new series follows the men of the 100th Bomb Group (the “Bloody Hundredth”) as they conduct perilous bombing raids over Nazi Germany, the review from our own Alex Maidy spoke highly of the show. He stated, “It is unlikely that any series will equal the acclaim that Band of Brothers achieved. Still, the blend of feature film directors and a cast of actors more than up to the task, Masters of the Air is a powerful companion to that HBO series and ranks slightly higher than The Pacific.

Masters of the Air just hit the skies as the biggest series debut on Apple TV+ ever. Austin Butler’s performance really lifted this WWII drama, pulling in more viewers in its first weekend than any other Apple TV+ show has managed in a whole season. It even outpaced the Godzilla spin-off, Monarch, in viewership.

“Masters of the Air” launched with more viewers in its opening weekend than any Apple TV+ series ever has in its first season, according to the streamer. Though an exact number of viewers was not made available, that puts the epic war miniseries launch above other high-profile original titles like “Hijack,” “The Morning Show” and “Severance.”
Remarkably, following the premiere of “Masters of the Air,” viewership across all of Apple TV+ climbed by 65% worldwide when compared to the previous seven-day period. The streamer also maintained double-digit growth across more than 100 territories.
“Masters of the Air” is currently debuting new episodes, with its sixth installment premiering on Friday, Feb. 23. The finale will bow on the streamer on March 15.

Those who fought in World War II are considered the Greatest Generation. And executive producers Tom Hanks, Steven Spielberg and Gary Goetzman paid homage to these young men who risked life and limb during the global conflict in their award-winning 2001 HBO series “Band of Brothers” and 2010’s “The Pacific.” And now they’ve taken to the not-so-friendly skies in their latest World War II series, Apple TV +’s “Masters of the Air.”
Created by John Shiban and John Orloff, “Masters of the Air” is based on the 2007 book: “Masters of the Air: America’s Bomber Boys Who Fought the War Against Nazi Germany,” the series starring Austin Butler focuses on the 8th Air Force’s 100th Bomb Group stationed in England. It was known as the “Bloody Hundredth” because of the high causalty rate.

This article contains spoilers for Masters of the Air episode 3.
One needn’t be a World War II expert to understand that the global conflict was a violent one. Even a cursory glance at casualty statistics on Wikipedia reveals some eye-popping numbers: 61 million total (military and civilian) lives lost for the Allies, 120 million gone for the Axis, and countless more affected in ways we could never begin imagine. All in all, roughly 3% of the world’s 1940 population is believed to have perished during the war.
In telling the story of the United States’ involvement in World War II via miniseries Band of Brothers and The Pacific, producers Tom Hanks, Steven Spielberg, and Gary Goetzman successfully captured the dread, doom, and death that pervaded the time period. With the most recent episode of their third effort Masters of the Air, however, they’ve truly outdone themselves.

Miller, the series stars Austin Butler, Barry Keoghan, Callum Turner and Anthony Boyle as members of the 100th Bomb Group, a B-17 Flying Fortress unit in the Air Force during World War II.
Executive produced by Steven Spielberg, Tom Hanks and Gary Goetzman, the show created by John Shiban and John Orloff is seen as a companion to “Band of Brothers” (2001) and “The Pacific” (2010). Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg’s collaboration on Saving Private Ryan spawned the critically acclaimed HBO series Band of Brothers, which chronicled the infantry troops on the ground in Europe during World War II. It was a massive hit, followed by The Pacific, an equally great series focused on the Pacific Theater during the war. Now, the producers are back with a third installment in their chronicle of WWII, Masters of the Air. Focused on the United States air forces during the 1940s, this series is bound to be another substantial win for Spielberg, Hanks, and all involved. Read our rave review here!

Masters of the Air is the third entry in a collection of miniseries produced by Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg about the United States’ involvement in World War II. Following Band of Brothers in 2001 and The Pacific in 2010, Masters of the Air takes to the skies to explore the U.S. Air Force’s efforts to take down the Axis Powers.
In speaking to Den of Geek prior to the series’ premiere on Apple TV+, executive producer of all three series Gary Goetzman explained how they were (or were not) related.
“We don’t ever cross over, you know,” Goetzman says. “Band of Brothers was its own thing. And the more anthological approach we took with The Pacific was its own thing. I feel this is different too. Their connection is they’re all facets of World War II performed differently and all heading for the same hopeful solution of getting rid of Hitler.

Apple TV’s new World War II epic Masters of the Air has faced a very steep climb to take flight, creatively speaking.
First, it had to live up to the legacy of its extraordinary predecessor, HBO’s 2001 limited series Band of Brothers, which some consider to be their all-time favorite war “movie.” BoB‘s successor, 2010’s The Pacific, showed, if anything, what a high bar the original set. And then there are the challenges of pulling off an air-war epic — it’s inherently tougher (for reasons we’ll get into), and potentially far more expensive (all those special effects shots), than infantry stories. Perhaps that’s why it’s taken more than a decade for Masters of the Air — which is based on Donald L. Miller’s book — to make the journey from concept to screen.

Austin Butler opened up about his Masters of the Air experience.
The 32-year-old Oscar nominee started working on his new series after wrapping Elvis. It was a busy time for him, but he explained why he was never going to pass on the opportunity when it was presented to him.
He also touched on his relationship with costar Callum Turner. The pair are closely linked in the series, and Austin revealed how they worked together to showcase that friendship in front of the cameras.

“It was one of those no-brainer decisions,” Austin told The Hollywood Reporter about accepting the role. “You’ve got Tom Hanks, Steven Spielberg and Gary Goetzman [all executive producers], and I’m such a huge fan of Band of Brothers, The Pacific and Saving Private Ryan.”
He added, “I knew that this opportunity doesn’t come up every day, so I leapt in with everything that I could.

Even before they earned Oscar nominations for their respective performances in “Elvis” and “The Banshees of Inisherin,” Austin Butler and Barry Keoghan were already flying high. In 2021, the talented duo joined BAFTA TV nominee Callum Turner in filming “Masters of the Air,” a new miniseries produced by Tom Hanks, Steven Spielberg and Gary Goetzman. The World War II-set drama — the first two episodes of which are now streaming on Apple TV+ — is the long-awaited follow-up to the Emmy-winning HBO miniseries “Band of Brothers” and “The Pacific,” which followed members of the Army and Marine Corps, respectively, during the war.

Apple TV+ series “Masters of the Air” is the third collaboration from the team behind HBO’s “Band of Brothers” and “The Pacific.” Trio Tom Hanks, Gary Goetzman and Steven Spielberg produced the nine-part World War II epic series, which spotlights the men who fought in the 8th Air Force, specifically the men of the 100th Bomb Group. The vivid and vital story finds roots in the book of the same name by Donald L. Miller.
The crew of a typical Eighth Air Force heavy bomber plane included ten men — a pilot and his co-pilot flying the B17, the navigator and the bombardier in the machine’s nose, the flight engineer behind the pilot, the radio operator, two waist gunners, a ball turret gunner and a tail gunner. Not to mention the men who strategized from the bases, the plane engineers and Tuskegee airmen or Royal Airforce pilots who feature in this story.

As Austin Butler put the finishing touches on his eventual Oscar-nominated performance as Elvis Presley, his Elvis co-star Tom Hanks was already envisioning the budding superstar’s next move. In early 2021, just weeks before Elvis was scheduled to wrap, Hanks took Butler to dinner and pitched him Masters of the Air, the spiritual follow-up to the Emmy-winning miniseries Band of Brothers and The Pacific. Based on Donald L. Miller’s book of the same name, Band of Brothers writer John Orloff developed the World War II drama for Apple TV+, alongside the Brothers and Pacific producorial team of Hanks, Steven Spielberg and Gary Goetzman.
In hindsight, Butler is relieved that his first commitment after wrapping the career-changing role of Elvis didn’t require him to overanalyze such an important next step.

Just a week after wrapping on Baz Luhrmann’s “Elvis” biopic, Austin Butler arrived in the U.K. to start work on Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks’ epic World War II drama “Masters of the Air.”
He was joined on the Amblin and Playtone co-production by a cast who, like Butler, are poised to become the next generation of Hollywood leading actors, among them Callum Turner, Barry Keoghan, Anthony Boyle, Ncuti Gatwa and Nate Mann. Together, the band of brothers went through what was effectively a World War II bootcamp, encompassing lessons on everything from marching and dancing to etiquette and history. “It really built such bonds between all of us,” Butler tells Variety of the experience.

Following in the footsteps of Band of Brothers and The Pacific, Masters of the Air is the third entry into a collection of epic World War II limited series from producers Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg. Like its “Brothers” before it, Masters of the Air also features a massive cast. And we mean like … massive.
Masters of the Air‘s Wikipedia page reveals that more than 60 actors are credited in this nine-episode Apple TV+ series. Employing that many speaking roles makes sense, of course, as the Allies’ efforts to defeat Hitler and the Axis in WWII required quite a bit of manpower. It’s only nature that any miniseries telling that story would try to capture the scale of it all.
Series producer Gary Goetzman credits casting director Lucy Bevan with getting the impressive cadre of actors together.
“[Casting] had to be done on Zoom basically because it was during Covid.

In The Fabelmans, Steven Spielberg depicts his proxy as the product of an artistic mother and mechanical-minded father, blending the emotional intelligence of one and the technical expertise of the other to create movies engineered to tug at an audience’s heartstrings. Masters of the Air shows what might have happened if Spielberg had taken after only his father: The series recreates the hulking military machinery of its World War II tale in exacting detail, and often to dazzling effect, but struggles to bring its human stories to life.
Executive-produced by Spielberg, Tom Hanks, and Gary Goetzman, the miniseries follows the U.S. Air Force’s 100th Bomb Group as they carry out their missions from a base outside of Norfolk, England. It’s a different sort of aerial combat than we’re used to seeing on screen, as the planes aren’t nimble dogfighters that buzz through the air, pulling off balletic loop-de-loops.

Masters of the Air is an epic war saga recounting the bravery and heroism of World War II’s 100th Bomb Group.
With an all-star cast featuring some of a generation’s most laudable talent, the series plunges viewers into the bellies of bombers as pilots and their crews work together to complete missions when the odds are they will be lucky to make it home alive.

As “Masters of the Air” nears its end, one surviving member of the Air Force’s “Bloody Hundredth” bombing group finds himself standing next to a fireplace, sipping on whiskey, and quoting the German philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche. “Whoever fights monsters should take care not to become a monster himself,” he paraphrases for his fellow flyer, as they prepare to leave the war behind and return to their families. “Because if you gaze into the abyss, the abyss gazes right back at you.”
In the moment, the sentiment is sound enough. Both men have experienced war, up close and personal, and both have been shaped by the harrowing combat all around them. It’s only natural to wonder what they’ll be like when they’re home, when they’re grounded, when the bombs are no longer dropping from the sky. Can they go back to their families, their wives, their kids,...

Over 22 years after the premiere of HBO’s landmark Band of Brothers and nearly 14 years after the launch of HBO’s The Pacific (not quite as good as Band of Brothers but still epic longform storytelling), executive producers Tom Hanks, Gary Goetzman and Steven Spielberg have finally brought their third World War II series to the small screen.

Ready for takeoff. Apple TV+ has revealed a brand new featurette for the Masters of the Air series, which will be launching on Apple TV+ starting next week. This is looking incredible!! Very excited to dive right in. We already posted the main official trailer back in December, but with the debut next week they're giving it one final push. Once again produced by Steven Spielberg and Amblin, this 9-episode series tells the story of the airmen of World War II. Focusing specifically on the air men of the 100th Bomb Group (the "Bloody Hundredth") as they conduct many perilous bombing raids over Nazi Germany and grapple with the frigid conditions, lack of oxygen, and sheer terror of combat conducted at 25,000 feet in the air. A new series from Spielberg, Tom Hanks, and Gary Goetzman - the producers of Band of Brothers and The Pacific. During WWII, airmen risk their...

A sequel to Robert Zemeckis’ 2004 animated Christmas film The Polar Express is being looked at, although nothing is yet confirmed.
Almost 20 years after its release, Robert Zemeckis’ animated Christmas film The Polar Express could be on the cusp of getting a sequel, as one of the film’s producers, Gary Goetzman, has revealed he’s trying to get a follow-up underway.
Speaking to Comicbook.com, Goetzman referenced a couple of films he’s produced before dropping an interesting nugget regarding the future of The Polar Express. (The following quotes are lightly edited for clarity.)
“I’d love to [do The Polar Express 2]. I’d love to do a sequel of Where The Wild Things Are. There’s a lot of the things that we’ve done, if it established itself [and] studios want another one. That’s the way it goes. I’m up for Mamma Mia 3, man. That would be a ball to do right about now.
