William Friedkin was an inherently well-informed filmmaker. He started out in television at age 18, directing live news reports and documentaries for WGN-tv in Chicago. He knew how to get to the bottom of any story, best frame the narrative to capture attention, and inform the viewer.
He brought that sense of assured knowledge to movies. There is never any doubt about the veracity of The French Connection (1971). The Exorcist (1973), meanwhile, invites the audience to medical diagnoses and a realistic portrayal of demonic possession. It is the emphasis on the medical that makes the demonic seem plausible. Similarly, To Live and Die in L.A. (1985) is an authentic movie about counterfeiting, and one which deserves to be as celebrated as his early ‘70s masterpieces.

It was a typical day on the set of “Gladiator 2” in Malta. British director Ridley Scott was orchestrating a complex sequence featuring the film’s star, Paul Mescal, and several hundred extras, all of it unfolding inside a replica of the Colosseum. They were more than halfway through the arduous three-month production of the film that marked the long-awaited sequel to Scott’s 2000 Oscar best picture winner, when, on July 13, at high noon, Scott called “Cut!” Quickly, word began to spread that half a world away, talks between SAG-AFTRA and the major studios and streaming services had collapsed.
Given that the cast and crew of the action epic had been living in a bubble, the prospect of a strike had seemed remote. But it didn’t take long for the grim reality to sink in. Within hours, Scott and his producers had sent a note to the crew...

Back in 1990, the downfall of European pop duo Milli Vanilli seemed like an open-and-shut case of disgrace.
They — Fabrice Morvan and Rob Pilatus — were the lip-synching scofflaws, convicted in the court of public opinion of fraud against a generation of FM Top 40 radio listeners robbed of our precious sense that music and its artistic authorship were directly linked. The punishment? Permanent professional ostracism and punchline status — though when Pilatus died of an accidental drug overdose in 1998, the reality became even more punitive.
Luke Korem’s new documentary Milli Vanilli attempts to give the “Blame It on the Rain” non-singers 106 minutes of re-evaluation. Were they perpetrators or victims? If they were some gradation of the latter, who were the actual villains? If they were some gradation of the former, did the punishment fit the crime? What did Rob and Fab actually do, what was their actual sin and why did audiences respond the way they did?...

After the early success of “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power,” Amazon is doubling down on its strategy of mining the mythology of iconic science fiction and fantasy franchises to create new shows. Earlier this year, the streaming service began developing “Blade Runner 2099,” a mysterious series set in Ridley Scott’s sci-fi universe that takes place 50 years after the events of “Blade Runner 2049.” Now, Amazon has officially decided to move forward with the project, ordering 10 episodes of the series from showrunner Silka Luisa and executive producers Ridley Scott, Michael Green, and Alcon Entertainment co-founders Andrew Kosove and Broderick Johnson.
Though little is currently known about the show’s plot, it is part of Kosove and Johnson’s larger efforts to expand the “Blade Runner” universe since acquiring the property in 2011. In addition to producing “Blade Runner 2049,” they also backed the anime series “Blade Runner: Black Lotus.

William Friedkin’s To Live and Die in L.A., which opened on Friday, November 1, 1985 to lukewarm notices and underwhelming box office despite being championed by Roger Ebert’s four-star review, is a highly stylized, dark, and uncompromising crime thriller that boasts a then-unknown cast with a story and a pace that feels more suited to the 1970’s. It also contains what I consider to be the greatest car chase ever filmed and edited for a major motion picture, which took no less than five weeks to plan and shoot. Having seen Mr. Friedkin’s brilliant East Coast police thriller The French Connection (1971) on VHS in 1986, I made it a point the following year to catch up with his West Coast-based story of a Secret Service agent, Richard Chance (William Petersen), whose best friend and partner Jim Hart (Michael Greene) has been murdered by artist/currency counterfeiter Rick Masters...

Exclusive: Once Upon A Time‘s Meghan Ory has been cast as the female lead opposite Josh Holloway in CBS’ drama pilot Intelligence, which co-stars Marg Helgenberger. Also joining the pilot, created/executive produced by Michael Seitzman, exec produced by Rene Echevarria and directed/exec produced by David Semel, is P.J. Byrne. For Ory, who is a regular on Once, Intelligence is in first position. Both Once and Intelligence are produced by ABC Studios, which allowed the flexibility. After recurring heavily on Season 1 of Once, Ory was promoted to regular in part because of interest for pilots she received last season. Her character Ruby has not been as prominently featured in this season’s storylines as it was last season. Intelligence is centered at U.S. Cyber Command and focuses on a unit that has been created around one agent (Holloway) with a very special gift — a microchip has been...

Fans of YouTube’s most favorite anthropomorphic fruit with a penchant for puns will be able to catch his kitchen antics on television screens sometime in the first half of 2012. Cartoon Network picked up a 15-episode order of The Annoying Orange TV series from creator Dane Boedigheimer and “full-service entertainment management, media and content production company” The Collective back in November. As Boedigheimer told us, ““Basically the plan is to really take advantage of TV’s longer format and expand the Ao world way beyond what it is on YouTube…really dive into the characters and their personalities.” But television and Cartoon Network aren’t the only places to which The Annoying Orange is expanding. You can currently find the irritating little guy in your local neighborhood Toys “R” Us and JCPenney. The Collective teamed up with toymaker The Bridge Direct (the same company that makes miniature likenesses of Justin Bieber,...

Harrison Ford and relative newcomer Chadwick Boseman are set to star in Legendary Pictures’ Jackie Robinson biopic. Brian Helgeland wrote the script and will direct the movie, titled 42.
Ford will play Branch Rickey, President and manager of the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1947 when he broke the “color barrier” by signing Robinson as the first African-American in Major League baseball. Deadline reported his offer this week and Legendary sent a press release blitz Friday confirming his casting. Robert Redford had long been attached to the role.
30-year-old Boseman, whose resume consists of mostly bit television parts until now, will play the second baseman. Robinson won the inaugural Rookie of the Year award that year, the National League Mvp two years later, a world series title in 1955 and, in 1962, he was inducted in the Hall of Fame. Mlb retired his number, 42, across all teams in 1997.

42 is a movie that will tell the story of Jackie Robinson and Branch Rickey, the Dodger Executive who was the first to sign an African American player on a Major League Baseball team. Breaking the color barrier was a risky movie back then, but it was more a message than it was a risk. For obvious reasons the message was clear. Now a press release from Legendary Pictures confirms two major players joining the cast of 42. Harrison Ford, who was in talks to play as Rickey, has official joined the cast. And he will star opposite of relative newcomer Chadwick Boseman, who will play as Jackie Robinson.
42 is written and will be directed by Brian Helgeland. Legendary Pictures will be producing. Here is the official press release for the movie:

Variety reports that Brian Helgeland and Warner Bros. have taken an unusual turn for their Jackie Robinson-centered 42, casting Chadwick Boseman as the iconic baseball star. (No, me neither.) The actor has spent the majority of his career in random episodes of random TV shows, with the occasional film role, such as The Express, being thrown his way. I don’t think you need me to tell you that this is a huge deal for him.
Not only because he’s playing one of baseball’s most iconic figures, either; Variety also confirms Harrison Ford‘s role as Branch Rickey, the man who signed Robinson into the Mlb in 1947 and forever changed the game. When he was rumored just yesterday, many (including myself) didn’t see it happening — if only because the once-iconic actor had relegated himself to easy genre fare or features drowned in sentimentality.

Burbank, CA – December 9, 2011 – Legendary Pictures announced today that it has cast Chadwick Boseman and Harrison Ford to star in the company’s film based upon history’s most celebrated baseball figure, Jackie Robinson. Boseman will depict the iconic baseball star, paying tribute to the legacy and impact Robinson made when he became the first African American Major League Baseball player. Ford will star as Branch Rickey, the innovative Major League Baseball executive who is best known for breaking Mlb’s color barrier by signing Jackie Robinson to a minor league contract in 1945. Two years later, at the start of the 1947 major league baseball season, Robinson was signed to the Brooklyn Dodgers major league baseball team with the help of Rickey. Rickey was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1967. Legendary worked early on in development with Robinson’s widow, Rachel Robinson, to ensure the movie adaptation of the famed player’s story is authentic.

Briefly: We've just heard that Harrison Ford is the latest actor [1] that the producers of Jackie Robinson film 42 have eyed to play Branch Rickey, the La Dodgers exec who helped break the color barrier in baseball by signing Jackie Robinson. While we don't know if Ford will end up playing the role (somehow I expect not) we do know who'll play Jackie Robinson. Chadwick Boseman, whose credits are primarily in small TV roles going back to 2003, will play Robinson, according to Variety [2]. Update: Looks like I was wrong in the opening paragraph, as Jeff Sneider at Variety just said via Twitter [3], "Breaking: Harrison Ford set to play Branch Rickey in Legendary Pictures' Jackie Robinson biopic 42! Link coming..." The full press release from Legendary Pictures is below. Brian Helgeland wrote and will direct; this is the evolution of a Jackie Robinson film that has been kicking around Hollywood for some time.

Russell Brand usually plays the fool in his movies. But he has written a very smart blog post about addiction, his own addiction, and his friend Amy Winehouse's addiction and death this weekend. I have said it before and I'll say it again: the entertainment industry is not doing enough institutionally to stop enabling its addicted artists and start helping them. This is a town that has no notion of personal responsibility, much less corporate responsibility. (Witness how long it took for the moguls to realize that closing the Mptf's intensive care facilities was not a humane idea even if it made financial sense.) In the mid-1990s, the music industry took a long hard look at its addiction problem and its role before more artists died. But that was back-burnered when National Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences president Michael Greene was forced out. The film and TV business...
