Inspirational biographical dramas will always appeal to a certain segment of the audience. But it’s something about being told the same thing over and over again that has severely diminished the effect most films of this genre intend to leave on us. The makers, taking up the heavy job of telling the story of a real baseball maestro who most people probably hadn’t heard of until now, have evidently sidestepped that risk. As a result, The Hill is blissfully loud as the mouthpiece for a host of impactful journeys. Who knows? Maybe one of these will resonate with you too.

Biopics have been a dependable way for filmmakers to deliver a powerful story. There is always a set template attached with the biopics though. It’s either a rags to riches story or a cautionary tale about someone who fell from glory because of their vices. Which is the more interesting one? I feel the latter and yet there is a great warmth about an inspiring story where someone crossed great obstacles and tasted success. The new film The Hill is based on the life of baseball star Rickey Hill. With full access to all the intricate details about his life, this biopic has enough material to craft an inspiring story around his legacy. Rickey was born with a degenerative spine ailment and yet went on to be known as the ‘hardest hitter’ in baseball. He was a prodigy, but his career was cut short by his physical challenges. Overcoming...

Two true-life sports movies opening on the same weekend! Oh yeah, it was bound to happen but we’re taking a big detour (hmm), maybe even a U-turn from the video game F1 flick. For one thing. this one is set squarely in the past, before Pong was a staple, way back in the splashy 1970s, after a brief stop in the sensational ’60s. Oh, and this concerns the American pastime (as in hot dogs and apple pie), in the tradition of The Natural and The Rookie (with which it shares a star). Now the title doesn’t refer to the pitcher’s mound, but rather to the obstacles its focus must face (perhaps closer to a steep mountain). And since it’s also the last name of the family in this faith-based drama it’s simply The Hill.

The Avengers: The Emma Peel Collection (1965-1967)
Blu-ray
[Imprint] Television
1965-67 / 1.33: 1 / Black and White and Color
Starring Diana Rigg, Patrick Macnee
Written by Brian Clemens, Philip Levene
Directed by Roy Ward Baker, Sidney Hayers, Charles Crichton
Though remembered for its idiosyncratic humor, The Avengers made its debut in 1961 as a no-nonsense crime drama. Ian Hendry starred as David Keel, a doctor turned detective, while Patrick MacNee haunted the sidelines as an inscrutable investigator named John Steed. Shot in black and white under grey English skies, the show was unmistakably a product of the Cold War, fueled by John Dankworth’s stentorian theme and an origin story that predicted television’s noirish The Fugitive; Keel’s fiancée has been murdered, prompting our heroes to join in the search for her killer.
It was a brief sojourn for Hendry who left at the end of the season, relinquishing star billing to Macnee and his new partner,...

Hollywood’s most macho liberals pack this action western with cheating, double crosses, rampant greed, uncouth heroes and decadent sneering villains… and that’s not counting the wall-to-wall revolutionary carnage. Toothy Burt Lancaster and philosophical Gary Cooper double-deal with cannon-fodder Juaristas and Cesar Romero’s decadent Frenchman, to steal a fortune in gold. Francois Truffaut called it ‘the first cynical western.’ Robert Aldrich’s direction emphasizes wince-inducing violence. The ‘dirty dozen’- like supporting freebooters include Ernest Borgnine, Charles Bronson, Jack Elam and Archie Savage. This eye-opening blockbuster strongly influenced Sergio Leone’s Italo westerns made ten years later.

The coronavirus pandemic is still going on, and shutdowns are being lifted oh so gently. That generally means two things: go outside with a mask on while strafing away from passersby on the sidewalk, or stay in and watch stuff. Luckily, The Criterion Channel has announced its June 2020 lineup, which is full of things old and new.
June sees the streaming premiere of Bertrand Bonello’s fantasy-horror, Zombi Child, which originally premiered in the Director’s Fortnight section of the 2019 Cannes Film Festival. The month also brings us the Channel’s addition of Gus Van Sant’s My Own Private Idaho, which comes with deleted scenes, a making-of documentary, and more. Meanwhile, they will also flesh out the service’s Chantal Akerman selection, adding features such as One Day Pina Asked…, Golden Eighties, and her penultimate feature, Almayer’s Folly. ABC News will tackle the thorny subject of disgraced financier Jeffrey Epstein with two different specials, just weeks after internal video leaked of “20/20” anchor Amy Robach complaining she could not some of her own reporting about the controversial figure on the air.
ABC News has scheduled a two-hour broadcast special and eight-part podcast on Jeffrey Epstein and the women who survived his crimes and abuse. Epstein, a convicted sex offender who died in a jail cell while under arrest under charges of sex trafficking earlier this year, traveled in elite circles and the scrutiny around his crimes has drawn attention to everyone from former President Bill Clinton to England’s Prince Andrew to former Microsoft chief Bill Gates. All have denied being involved with Epstein’s procurement of women.

Beginning in the early 1960s, one of the main venues where audiences could watch underground films outside of New York City was the midnight movie screening series called Underground Cinema 12.
The origins of Underground Cinema 12 were related by one of its founders, Mike Getz, to the Alternative Projections historical project. Getz was the manager of the Cinema Theater in Hollywood, California when he was approached by John Fles, who had been holding alternative cinema screenings around Los Angeles, such as in the Jewish and Ukrainian cultural centers.
Fles had the idea to run a regular midnight movie screening series in an actual movie theater, which Getz quickly agreed to host. The Cinema Theater typically ran foreign films and independent cinema, so screening underground films at midnight seemed like a good match. Initially, the series was called Movies ‘Round Midnight and it premiered on Columbus Day 1963 with a screening of Jack Smith‘s Flaming Creatures,...

Celebrity Big Brother's Natasha: 'Austin has struggled to deal with the pain from his personal life'
It was probably Natasha Hamilton's CBB moment of the series when she yelled at Austin Armacost to stop shouting - but she understands why he was that way.
Speaking to Digital Spy and others, the Atomic Kitten singer suggested the American has struggled to deal with all of his personal pain.
"Austin is such a big character," she said. "From the minute he woke up to the minute he went to bed, it was constant jokes," she said. "He's a very intelligent man, very witty.
"He would get a bit rowdy in the evening after a few drinks, but with all the pain he was carrying around in his personal life, he's not been able to deal with it. So even though he would lash out, he would always apologise for it.
"What are you supposed to do with someone in that position? You just have to give him...

Jemma Bird became the latest candidate to be fired in tonight's episode of The Apprentice.
The 26-year-old was the ninth hopeful to be sent packing by Lord Sugar after Team Tenacity's shambles of a coach tour - which left Karren Brady shell-shocked.
Led by Sanjay Sood-Smith, the group arranged a shambolic Kent history tour which featured nursery rhyme singalongs, questionable facts, a dodgy toilet and an aborted museum trip.
Lucky to escape Lord Sugar's firing finger was James Hill, who was not brought back into the Boardroom by Sood-Smith but was told: "I have warned you a couple of times that this is supposed to be a serious business challenge. You are this close from me invoking my right of getting rid of who I want, irrespective of who he's bringing back in here.
"So I'll tell you for the last bloody time - clean your act up and stop being a clown.

Fired Apprentice candidates Lindsay Booth and Nurun Ahmed have compared rival candidate James Hill to "an uncontrollable puppy" and "24-hour mini-mart", due to his inability to ever shut up or calm down.

The Apprentice star Lord Alan Sugar continued to be ruthless in tonight's episode as two more candidates were fired.
In the second double firing of the series, both swimming academy owner Lindsay Booth and fashion retailer Nurun Ahmed were sent packing by Lord Sugar.
The duo found themselves in the firing line after a scented candle task, which Team Summit lost by just £14.77 after failing to stick to their pricing strategy and selling their products at too low a margin.
Booth - who struggled in the production section of the task and only managed to sell one candle - essentially removed herself from the competition by admitting that she was out of her depth.

The victim, Mark Jones, told The Sun newspaper: ''I was talking to Hill's girlfriend at the time who I knew worked at a children's soft play area. Hill stormed over and began throwing his fists. ''My drink went flying. He threw punch after punch. I'm not sure how many connected. ''I fell to the floor and one of my contact lenses fell out. As I looked up I saw a boot coming towards my...

Philip Seymour Hoffman had amassed quite the estate after 25 years in the business and when he died tragically on Feb. 2 of a heroin overdose, he had his estate in order per his exact wishes. According to probate documents filed in New York City and obtained Monday by E! News, Hoffman had told his former accountant that he "did not want his children to be considered 'trust fund' kids," and therefore left the entirety of his reported $35 million estate to his partner Mimi O'Donnell. David Friedman, who had advised Hoffman in financial matters, told attorney James H. Hill that the Capote star had told him as recently as one year before his death that his wishes had not changed as far as...

With all the bad news that comes out of Detroit, it’s about time something positive was reported and I can’t think of anything better than this. Starting today, Friday Feb. 21, and continuing through Saturday Feb. 22, The Redford Theater in Detroit will be “presenting three riveting films starring the queen of high-octane action thrillers,” starring the one and only Pam Grier. James Hill’s Coffy will be the feature on tonight, starting at 8:00Pm, and Hill’s Foxy Brown will be shown on Sat. Feb. 22, at 2:00Pm. Then on Saturday night, starting at 8Pm, Quentin Tarantino’s film Jackie Brown will round out the festival. And needless to say, Ms. Grier will be in...

"Alice, I've come to warn you, don't go to Tower House," yells a maniac in a top hat at orphan Alice in the first of these creepy tales, James Hill's gothic thriller The Man From Nowhere. Thankfully, a gang of "ragamuffins" help the plucky girl out. Made between 1974 and 1985, you can't help but think these three supernatural stories influenced the likes of Doctor Who's Steven Moffat and The League of Gentleman. Evocative, sweet and well-made tales of childhood adventure.

Yes, we said it. This is probably the best ukulele video ever made.
If you're thinking the claim is a bunch of hyperbolic nonsense, you haven't watched musician James Hill work his magic on the tiny Hawaiian instrument. Skip to about 3:50 in the video above and behold how a ukulele can be transformed into a hilariously impressive hip-hop beat machine.
Don't say we didn't tell you.

The British Film Institute (BFI) is to launch a major project dedicated to Gothic cinema, which includes more than 150 films and around 1,000 screenings throughout the UK.
Running from August until January 2014, the Gothic project include the longest ever season at BFI’s Southbank venue in London, UK wide theatrical and DVD releases, an education programme, a new BFI Gothic book, a range of partnerships, special guests and commentators including project ambassador Sir Christopher Frayling.
Heather Stewart, creative director at the BFI, said: “Gothic has never been more potent or popular, reflecting the turbulent times we are living in, our deepest fears and hidden passions.
“The British discovered sex in vivid Technicolor through Gothic. With a new generation gripped by the post modern Gothic world of Twilight’s ‘vegetarian’ vampires, Harry Potter’s spells and El James’s 50 Shades, its meaning has mutated yet again. It’s now time to look back into the deep dark beating heart of...

Last week saw the release of Alexander Payne’s Oscar-winning The Descendants and Steven Soderbergh’s Haywire, and this week brings to our shelves the other big winner at the Academy Awards three months ago, Michel Hazanavicius’ The Artist, alongside (as ever) a slew of other brilliant films.
In tandem with the Universal 100th Anniversary Editions that have already started rolling out, Play begin releasing their exclusive Blu-ray Steelbooks of some of the films this week, and if you’re a fan of Universal’s recent and classic catalogue, you’ll definitely want to invest in more than a few of these, priced at a very reasonable £9.99. There’ll be more of these in the weeks and months to come, as well as non-100th Anniversary Steelbook re-releases, so keep your eyes peeled.
My personal picks of the week:
Drake Doremus’ Like Crazy & Sean Durkin’s Martha Marcy May Marlene...

Here at HeyUGuys we’re open to exploring any subject given the cinematic treatment, however specialist it may appear to be.
With this in mind, Saturday afternoon entertainment was provided by a documentary focusing on the humble ukulele. Entitled Mighty Uke, the film is the brainchild of Canadian editor Tony Coleman and his partner Margaret Meagher, and their initial idea of filming a modest 10 minutes short blossomed into a feature-length documentary when unexpected funding was found (as Tony explained in the post-screening Q&A).
What they’ve managed to assemble is a fun, heart-warming look at an instrument which tends to get marginalised as a quirky pastime but, as the film illustrates, there’s much love out there for this four-stringed creation, as huge legion of fans from around the globe consider it a rich interactive experience and ultimately, a means of bringing cultures together. It’s referred to by...

We continue our unabashed appreciation of some of the highlights of composer John Barry’s early movie career beyond the remit of the Bond franchise...
In the second part of our look at John Barry's extraordinary back catalogue of movie scores, we concentrate on a few more of the films from the mid- to late sixties. This was the beginning of a phase of phenomenal output, as well as experimentation, signposting his continuing diversity of technique and his burgeoning sense of style. Following on from the success of Zulu, his was a reputation that was quickly gaining momentum and garnering feverish accolades.
Stylish, contemporary and full of energy, Barry played as hard as he worked, and this musical period took place in a blur of fast living and nights at the Pickwick Club with the likes of Michael Caine and Terence Stamp, sampling the delights of the sixties at...

Good morning my lying Lannisters and stalwart Starks. Did you George Rr Martin fans get your copy of "A Dance With Dragons But Without Any F*cking Spoilers" yet? Did you stay up all night reading? Well here's some good news/bad news. Martin has said that he might have more than two more books in him. He might need three or more to wrap up the saga. Mostly, at this point, my tasty Targaryens, I think he's messing with you. (io9)
Speaking of drawn out bookish sagas, the final Harry Potter film had its New York premiere last night. I would do another whole post on the fashion therein but I'm all out of ways to say how cute Neville Longbottom has become. (But, seriously, Neville, damn.) Evil Beet has a nice overview of the red carpet clothing including the hotel drapes Emma Watson safety pinned to a corset.

Composer John Barry died of a heart attack, the BBC has reported. Barry was 77. Although Barry is best known for his James Bond scores — 11 in all, including Goldfinger, You Only Live Twice, and Diamonds Are Forever — he composed music for a wide variety of films, from James Hill's Born Free (1966), the Free Willy of the 1960s, to Dino De Laurentiis' megabudgeted King Kong (1976). Barry was nominated for seven Oscars; he took home five statuettes: two for Born Free (Best Original Score and Best Original Song, with lyrics by Don Black), in addition to The Lion in Winter (1968), Out of Africa (1985), and Dances with Wolves (1990). His Oscar nominations were for Mary, Queen of Scots (1971) and Chaplin (1992). Among Barry's other notable scores are those for Séance on a Wet Afternoon (1964), The Knack … and How to Get It (1965), Petulia (1968), Midnight [...]...

Writer/director James Kerwin creates a cinematic masterpiece with Yesterday was a Lie. The film follows Hoyle (played by Kipleigh Brown), a detective searching for a notebook that hasn’t been seen since World War II. The only clues she has are a lounge singer (Chase Masterson, who also produced this film) who speaks in riddles and a professor, John Dudas (John Newton), currently in hiding. As Hoyle pursues every lead, she uncovers philosophical truths, alternative realities and secrets that will change her life, and possibly the world, forever.
The making of this film can be described in one word: intentionality. Every decision is made to impact the audience’s experience, which is exactly how it should be. While I was originally put off by the fact that the film is in black and white, it actually adds to the noir aspects and reaffirms the point that Hoyle expects everything to be clear cut,...
