Byron Janis, the celebrated classical pianist who studied with Vladimir Horowitz, recorded previously unknown Chopin waltzes from manuscripts he unearthed and became a cultural hero in the U.S. after performing in the Soviet Union during the Cold War, has died. He was 95.
Janis died Thursday at The Mount Sinai Hospital in New York, his wife, Maria Cooper Janis, daughter of two-time Oscar-winning actor Gary Cooper, announced.
“I have been blessed with the privilege for 58 years of loving and being loved by not only one of the greatest artists of the 20th century, but by an exceptional human being who took his talents to their highest pinnacle,” she said in a statement.
During his 85-year career, Janis covered composers from Bach to David W. Guion and performed major piano concertos from Chopin, Mozart, Rachmaninoff, Liszt and Prokofiev. He occupied two volumes of the 1999 Mercury Philips series Great Pianists of the...

Dr. Jill Biden was in the house tonight at the 65th annual Grammy Awards, but the real first lady on the live CBS telecast clearly was Beyoncé.
Taking home two awards before the downtown L.A. show started on the small screen and Paramount+, and then Best R&b song with “Cuff It” and Best Dance/Electronic Music Album for Renaissance during the broadcast itself, Queen Bey is now literally the Queen of the Recording Academy with 32 career wins — more than any artist in Grammy history.

In Performance at the White House will return with a holiday season special to air on PBS on Dec. 21, with the program taped from Dec. 11-14.
Jennifer Garner will host the special, with performances by Andrea Bocelli, Matteo Bocelli, Virginia Bocelli, Camila Cabello, Eric Church, the Jonas Brothers, Norah Jones, Pentatonix, Billy Porter, Northwell Health Nurse Choir, Voices of Service and “The President’s Own” United States Marine Band.
President Joe Biden and First Lady Jill Biden will deliver remarks, and the event, titled Spirit of the Season, will highlight the holiday decor of the White House.
This will be the first In Performance since 2016, as none were held during the presidency of Donald Trump. The special also will be different in that the performances will be taped over a span of a few days, rather than a concert in the East Room, as has been tradition. That is because of Covid-19 protocols.

Beyonce and Jay-z didn’t do as well as we expected in the Grammy nominations for their joint album “Everything is Love” — apparently, not everything was love for the recording academy, who didn’t nominate them anywhere in the general field. But they nevertheless earned three nominations for their collaboration. They’re both already among the most awarded artists of all time, so how high will they climb on the list this weekend, if at all?
As of this writing they’re the front-runners to win two of their three categories based on the combined predictions of thousands of Gold Derby users: Best R&B Performance (“Summer”) and Best Urban Contemporary Album (“Everything is Love”). The only prize we think they’ll lose is Best Music Video, which is forecast to go to Childish Gambino‘s “This is America” instead.

Composer John Williams has won 24 Grammys over the course of his career for scores ranging from “Raiders of the Lost Ark,” to “Schindler’s List,” to “Memoirs of a Geisha.” That places him seventh among the most awarded artists in history. He could climb further up the ranks this year for his work on “Star Wars” scores. Will the 86-year-old legend prevail again?
Williams has been nominated 69 times overall and contends twice this year: Best Visual Media Score (“Star Wars: The Last Jedi”) and Best Instrumental Composition (“Mine Mission” from “Solo: A Star Wars Story”). Recent history is on his side. He has won 6 times in the last 11 years, and “Star Wars” in particular has been a good luck charm for him. He previously won for composing the original film (1978), “The Empire Strikes Back” (1981) and “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” (2017).

Among the many darkly mystifying and enigmatically surreal sequences that populate director David Lynch’s “Twin Peaks” revival, the eighth episode offers one its most compelling: Mr. C — the Black Lodge doppelganger of Special Agent Dale Cooper (both played by Kyle MacLachlan) — stops on a lonely, darkened highway to confront his traveling companion Ray Monroe (George Griffith) at gunpoint. After Ray shoots the evil entity himself, a bizarre pack of grimy, shadowy woodsmen emerges from the forest and tears C apart, extracting a sack containing the face of Bob, the series’ longstanding malignant spirit. Lynch leaves the sequence to be interpreted and decoded by the audience — and his crew, which shoots scenes without an exact linear context.

Maestro Steven Reineke lifted his baton, pointed to a first tier box and started the New York Pops playing probably the most well known song ever written as he led the audience in Happy Birthday to soon to be 90 year old John Kander. BroadwayWorld was there for the opening night exciting concert which celebrated the music of the award winning song writers, the legendary Kander amp Ebb. Cassie Levy and Tony Yazbeck, the triple threat singer, actor, dancers were the concerts guest artists. Probably not since Vladimir Horowitz had a nail tapped into Carnegie's stage for his piano placement has there been better tapping dancing than Mr. Yazbeck displayed at this concert. As in every New York Pops Concert, the joy of the music continues as Steven Reineke hosts an after party.

We all know his Adagio for Strings (from Platoon, if nowhere else), but little else Samuel Barber wrote. Leon McCawley urges a revival of a neglected 20th-century great
This year has seen a glut of important musical anniversaries. We've had Chopin aplenty, plus Schumann and Mahler to boot. Samuel Barber's centenary (1910-1981) has also fallen during this eventful season, but I guess we're out of candles and there's no more cake. Why has this wonderful composer somehow missed the cut?
At the tender age of nine, Barber left this touching note for his mother:
"Dear Mother: I have written this to tell you my worrying secret. Now don't cry when you read it because it is neither yours nor my fault. I suppose I shall have to tell it now without any nonsense. To begin with I was not meant to be an athlete. I was meant to be a composer,...
