Two weeks after what would have been Juice Wrld’s 25th birthday — and a week after the four-year anniversary of his death — the rapper’s estate has shared a new song titled “Lace It,” featuring Eminem.

Classic rock legend Billy Joel remains one of the most popular concert acts. The Piano Man consistently plays sold-out shows for his Madison Square Garden residency and tours worldwide. Joel makes plenty of money for his live performances, but he loses over $20,000 every show for refusing to sell one type of ticket.

Joel is famous for adoring his hometown, New York City, and that love extends to where he plays concerts. The “Uptown Girl” singer-songwriter is renowned for almost exclusively playing concerts in Manhattan, specifically the 20,000-seat Madison Square Garden. Joel has performed at least one show a month at the venerated arena since 2014.
But when he’s not tickling the ivories at The Garden, Joel plays sold-out stadiums across the nation and the globe.

During this morning’s Nintendo Direct presentation Bill Trinen announced that Animal Crossing: New Leaf will finally be released for the 3Ds in North America on June 9th, and across Europe on June 14th.
Trinen also commented a little on the basic structure of New Leaf, and made sure to point out a few new additions that make it the “definitive version of Animal Crossing“. By far, the best change to the game occurs as soon as your character arrives in the new town.

While watching this weekend’s episode of Saturday Night Live, a sensation not unlike déjà vu washed over me. At first, it was tough to place, considering Miley Cyrus had never before hosted the show. However, by the time the “Les Jeunes de Paris” sketch came around, I figured it out: The show’s writers gave Miley basically the same material to perform as they did when Emma Stone hosted SNL back in October. Careful watchers will note that both did Lindsay Lohan impressions, both danced it up with Taran Killam, and Lorne even decided to rerun the “Baby Spanx” commercial that first aired during Stone’s ep. What gives? Well, it’s probably this: Although I love Emma Stone’s work in film, both her and Cyrus demonstrated during their respective hosting stints that they’re not natural sketch comediennes. I can only assume that the writers panicked a...

Justin Timberlake gave late night U.S. TV viewers a treat on Wednesday, September 29 when he joined funnyman Jimmy Fallon for a surprise medley of hip-hop hits. The Tupac Shakur biopic is finally crawling out of the depths of development hell. Antoine Fuqua (Training Day, Brooklyn’s Finest) was previously named as the film’s director. Recently, Stephen J. Rivele and Chris Wilkinson were hired to draft the screenplay. Rivele and Wilinson are an Oscar-nominated writing team known for their work on Ali and Nixon. There was a previous draft that was more documentary-like, but Rivele and Wilkinson claim that their script will not be “in any way biopic-y”. The new script will take place on the last day of Tupac’s life, with events from his last four years being referenced in flashbacks. This will probably result in a more unique film, but will sadden those (such as myself), who were hoping for a Humpty Hump cameo in a scene referencing Tupac’s days as a backup dancer and rapper with Digital Underground.

Why, on this very day last year, Kid Rock announced he had acquired the naming rights to the Detroit Tigers' stadium, and Coldplay declared they were recording their next album in zero gravity.
Of course, none of it ended up being true, and both acts added their names to the ever-growing list of some of music's greatest tricksters. It seems that bands have been at this kind of thing for decades now, so we figured that now was as good...

Love the 1922 silent film Nosferatu directed by F.W. Murnau? Well, you’re going to love it a whole lot more with a new, live modern soundtrack performed by the Evolution Control Committee. But, here’s the real gimmick: The new soundtrack is composed entirely of soundtracks from other movies that Ecc will DJ live as the film unspools.
Culling snippets from The Sound of Music, Jaws, Dr. No, Star Wars, Eraserhead and dozens more, the Ecc spin the vinyl soundtracks into one amazingly unified score. To witness a sample of this amazing process, check out the video below.
And, in addition to Nosferatu, there will be a screening of the documentary Copyright Criminals directed by Kembrew McLeod and Ben Franzen, which examines the history, controversy and ongoing debate over music sampling. Featured in the doc are Public Enemy,...

This recently aired on PBS’s Independent Lens series, and I’m glad it’s on YouTube – ironically, given the subject matter the film covers. It’s worth viewing, if you haven’t already seen it.
Long before people began posting their homemade video mash-ups on the Web, hip-hop musicians were perfecting the art of audio montage through sampling. Sampling — or riffing — is as old as music itself, but new technologies developed in the 1980s and 1990s made it easier to reuse existing sound recordings. Acts like Public Enemy, De La Soul and the Beastie Boys created complex rhythms, references and nuanced layers of original and appropriated sound. But by the early 1990s, sampling had collided with the law. When recording industry lawyers got involved, what was once called “borrowed melody” became “copyright infringement.”
