Anyone But You is getting a lot of attention from fans and especially industry specialists who are now just finding out that rom-coms can still make money at the box office. While the raunchy romantic comedy by the director Will Gluck (Friends with Benefits) isn’t exactly a masterpiece or an instant classic, it gives the viewers some much-deserved escape and a fun story, that they don’t have to wear 3D glasses for.
Starring Sydney Sweeney (Euphoria) and Glen Powell (Top Gun: Maverick), Anyone But You revolves around Ben and Bea, who meet each other by chance and have an amazing first date unfortunately that doesn’t last long, and both of them part ways but the kicker comes when after some time both of them unexpectedly find themselves at a destination wedding in Australia, and because of unexpected circumstances they decide to pretend to be a couple.

There’s clever marketing, and then there’s Glen Powell and Sydney Sweeney’s ingenious strategy for drumming up more interest in their romantic comedy, Anyone But You, by leading the world into thinking they’re having an off-screen relationship. Speaking with The New York Times about the success of the couple’s comedic smash hit, which earned $219 million at the worldwide box office, Powell says he and Sweeney leaned into the rumors to bring attention to their film, and it worked like a charm.
“The two things that you have to sell a rom-com are fun and chemistry,” Powell told The New York Times. “Sydney and I have a ton of fun together, and we have a ton of effortless chemistry. That’s people wanting what’s on the screen off the screen, and sometimes you just have to lean into it a bit — and it worked wonderfully. Sydney is very smart.

One of the mandates laid out by actor Patrick Stewart prior to the shooting of "Star Trek: Picard" was that the new Trek series not be a reunion special. He didn't want to return to "Star Trek" after 15 years (his last appearance as Jean-Luc Picard was in "Star Trek: Nemesis" in 2002) just to participate in an insufferably teary series wherein the cast of "Star Trek: The Next Generation" tiresomely get back on the bridge of the Enterprise-d and re-do everything they had done on the celebrated 1987 series. By the time the third season of "Picard" rolled around, the series resoundingly broke that mandate.
In the show's first two seasons, however, the showrunners had to innovate. Picard was no longer a starship captain, and his closest allies were not an official Starfleet crew. Indeed, the main characters on "Picard" were all free agents, with most of them actively resentful of Starfleet.

I'm about to propose a somewhat radical idea, but hear me out: What if enemies ... became lovers? Once upon a time, the studio system used to deliver multiple movies a year riffing on this classic rom-com premise, but recent decades have seen these exact sorts of vehicles for movie stars falling by the wayside more and more. After all, we just have to make room for more superhero movies like "Madame Web," don't we? But in a highly ironic twist, one disaster of a Sydney Sweeney-starring production has given way to another much more successful one -- and the same studio is responsible for both. Sensing a lesson here, folks? In short, long live rom-coms!
"Anyone But You" maybe didn't reinvent the wheel or anything, as laid out in Marshall Shaffer's review for /Film, but co-leads Sweeney and Glen Powell certainly managed to charm their ways into the hearts of audiences worldwide.

At the very end of the first season of "Star Trek: Picard," after the story had concluded and everyone was headed back home, the violent bounty hunter Seven of Nine (Jeri Ryan) and Admiral Picard's close friend Raffi (Michelle Hurd) sat idly conversing. They reached out and began romantically holding hands, implying that the characters were initiating a romance. Previously throughout "Star Trek," both Seven and Raffi had only been seen having romances with men, so their respective bisexuality came as a pleasant surprise.
Sadly, at the start of the second season of "Picard," enough time had passed that Seven and Raffi had already dated for a while ... and had broken up. There was now a great deal of romantic resentment between them, and they had to struggle to fulfill their mission in the 21st century (the second season featured a time travel plot). The third season of "Star Trek: Picard," overseen by showrunner Terry Matalas, ended with an intriguing new setup. After the season's story had concluded, the action fast-forwarded one year to when Jack Crusher (Ed Speleers) had become a provisionary ensign in Starfleet. Jack, with his father (Patrick Stewart) and mother (Gates McFadden), took a good long gander at his new assignment, the Titan-a, newly rechristened the Enterprise-g. This new ship was to be captained by Seven of Nine (Jeri Ryan), formerly the first officer on board the Titan-a, and the vessel was poised to go on its first deep-space mission with its new name.
Also on board were Raffi (Michelle Hurd), Seven's ex-girlfriend and also her first officer, as well as former Titan crewmembers Lieutenant Matthew Arliss Mura (Joseph Lee), Ensign Kova Rin Esmar (Jin Maley), and presumably Dr. Ohk (Tiffany Shepis). In a post-credits stinger after the final "Picard" episode,...

Things aren't looking great at the box office right now, as there are very few big releases in theaters that are getting moviegoers out in meaningful numbers. But there is something good to focus on today as Sony's rom-com "Anyone But You" has continued to quietly defy expectations for over a full month now. The film crossed the $100 million milestone over the weekend and is arguably one of the most unlikely movies to ever hit that mark based on how things started.
"Anyone But You" added another $5.4 million to its ever-growing total over the weekend, per The Numbers. That was good enough for a fourth place finish in its fifth frame, which is impressive. More importantly, director Will Gluck's romantic comedy has now earned $64.2 million domestically to go with $35.9 million internationally for a grand total of $100.1 million worldwide. Given its $25 million budget, this is going to be a huge win for Sony Pictures.

While Paramount+ has recently said goodbye to one Star Trek series (Picard) and will be to another this year (Discovery), there are other projects coming — and one that fans and stars hope joins that list. So, of course, when TV Insider caught up with Picard‘s Michelle Hurd on the red carpet for Law & Order: Svu‘s 25th season celebration — she left the NBC drama in its second season — we had to ask about possibly seeing her as Raffi again. “I love Raffi. She’s my favorite character,” Hurd shared. “We have hands, fingers, everything’s crossed for Star Trek: Legacy. I know that right now they’re working on Section 31 for Michelle Yeoh. And then they’re going to do Starfleet Academy. That’s going to be a series. And then if the fans still want it, they’ll start working on Star Trek: Legacy.” (And if you’d...

To begin with a brief editorial: the unbinding of special effects ultimately harms "Star Trek."
One of the reasons Trekkies become attached to certain characters, or fall in love with the workspaces on various ships and space stations is because the shows spend so much time with them. There are many, many episodes of "Star Trek" that take place entirely on board the Enterprise, and fans — long paying attention — begin to know its geography. After enough time watching a Starfleet vessel, viewers feel like they could, if they should be magically transported there, find their way around.
Taking "Star Trek" away from a starship for too long can, quite tragically, rob a show of a vital sense of place. We, as Trekkies, need to see what everyday life is like on a starship and see what a "normal boring" day looks like before we can appreciate the depth of a crisis.

Plot: After a meet-cute at a coffee shop, high-flying finance whiz Ben (Glen Powell) and unhappy law student Bea (Sydney Sweeney) have a romantic misunderstanding that puts them at each other’s throats. When the two are forced to attend a destination wedding together, their feud threatens to derail the nuptials, leading their friends to plot a romantic trap that will have them fall back into each other’s arms…and beds.
Review: Let me preface this by saying there’s nothing wrong with a good romantic comedy. It’s a genre that’s been dying in recent years, but when the formula is just right, you might manage a crowd-pleasing smash that will make many people happy. Yet, there’s an alchemy to the genre, and if the chemistry between the two leads is off, you wind up with a dud. Not everyone can be Billy Crystal and Meg Ryan...

Earlier this year, Sydney Sweeney and Glen Powell’s on-set and red carpet flirtations sparked rumors of the duo being involved in an actual relationship. The extensive are-they-or-aren’t-they press coverage has felt suspiciously like PR engineering geared toward setting audiences up for Will Gluck’s rom-com Anyone But You. This seemingly manufactured narrative of on-screen chemistry spilling over into real life, though, dovetails interestingly with the plot of the film, which finds Bea (Sweeney) and Ben (Powell) toeing a similarly ambiguous line as they pretend to be in a relationship while at the wedding in Australia between the former’s sister, Halle (Hadley Robinson), and the latter’s friend, Claudia (Alexandra Shipp).
Bea and Ben’s history began before the wedding, when a flirty coffeeshop encounter led to a romantic, yet sex-free, late-night talking session at Ben’s home only for Bea to sneak out early the next morning.

In the realm of romantic comedies, certain tropes are so ingrained that they become almost expected, and Will Gluck’s Anyone But You, which he co-wrote with Ilana Wolpert, comfortably nestles itself into familiar territory. The film, starring Sydney Sweeny and Glen Powell, with a supporting ensemble including Alexandra Shipp, GaTa, Hadley Robinson, Michelle Hurd, Dermot Mulroney, Darren Barnet and Rachel Griffiths, is a classic case of somewhat funny, middle-of-the-road storytelling in the genre.
Future lawyer Bea (Sweeney) and Ben (Powell) first meet in a coffee shop, complete with an awkward bathroom encounter. It quickly escalates to a night at his place, and ends with her sneaky departure. Ben’s friend Pete (GaTa) teases him about falling in love after the first night, a notion Ben denies while criticizing Bea, unaware she’s come back to apologize and overheard his vitriol. Fate throws them together again at a club, where...

America has been starved for pure, unapologetic, multiplex-grade romantic comedies, and Will Gluck’s “Anyone but You” doesn’t waste any time announcing itself as one of those. The first five minutes alone serve up a classic meet-cute in a coffee shop, a funny but wholly illogical bit of physical comedy involving a splash of water that might be mistaken for a pee stain, and a magical — but chaste — night together in a personality-less bachelor pad that looks just like an Ikea showroom.
If not for the hint of self-awareness that allows Bea (Sydney Sweeney) to put Ben (Glen Powell) on blast for his dude-bro decor, nothing about this prologue would seem the least bit out of place at the start of a mid-tier Julia Roberts movie from 1997. Not the leading man whose chiseled smile makes your own features seem like the parody of a face by comparison, nor the...

Anyone who’s seen Glen Powell in Richard Linklater’s terrifically enjoyable Hit Man will know he’s a bona fide movie star with charisma to burn. If you were paying attention, that was evident even in Top Gun: Maverick. And Sydney Sweeney has shown impressive range, serving delicious mean-girl snark in season one of The White Lotus, tracing a self-destructive spiral on Euphoria and demonstrating serious dramatic chops in Reality. But neither screen chemistry nor laughs can be manufactured, especially not with the kind of pedestrian writing in Will Gluck’s Anyone But You, which does nothing to reanimate the moribund studio rom-com.
Before he got busy with two Peter Rabbit movies that apparently do exist, or the unfortunate 2014 Annie remake, Gluck turned heads with the 2010 teen comedy Easy A, a contemporary take on The Scarlet Letter elevated by a star-making turn from Emma Stone. The director riffs on...

Do we need to get Glen Powell some lessons in stripping for Christmas? According to the Top Gun: Maverick actor, he nearly died at the top of a cliff while taking his pants off for a hilarious scene in the upcoming romantic comedy Anyone but You. In the scene, Powell pulls a giant spider from inside his shorts, then strips down to the buff to ensure there aren’t more creepy crawlies skittering toward his junk.
“You just have to grip it and rip it on a scene like that,” Powell told Variety at the Anyone but You premiere in New York Monday night, pointing to the moment he frantically strips naked in front of his co-star Sydney Sweeney. “You know you’re not going to leave that filming day looking cool, so you just have to embrace it.”

Glen Powell certainly bares it all in the upcoming rom-com “Anyone but You,” especially when co-star Sydney Sweeney pulls out a large spider from the inside of his shorts.

“Taking your clothes off on the side of a cliff in a hurry is not safe either,” Powell continued. “Nobody talks about that safety issue on set, where I almost died falling off a cliff taking my pants off too fast. But it’s a really fun scene, so it was all worth it.”

Enemies to lovers is one of the romance’s messiest tropes, but Sydney Sweeney and Glen Powell mastered hiding their hate in the official trailer for Anyone But You, in theaters Dec. 22. The film features the two Hollywood stars at a destination wedding where love is in the air — and so is their disdain for one another.
As evidenced by the preview soundtracked by Olivia Rodrigo’s “Bad Idea Right?,” Sweeney and Powell’s characters — Bea and Ben — are old flames (or one-night-standers) who decide that, for mutually beneficial reasons,...

Columbia Pictures has released the first full trailer for Anyone But You, the edgy rom-comedy starring Sydney Sweeney and Glen Powell.
Directed by Will Gluck, with a screenplay co-written by Gluck with Ilana Wolpert, the film follows Bea (Sweeney) and Ben (Powell) after a seemingly fiery connection turns ice-cold after their first date. Reunited at her sister’s destination wedding in Australia, the duo find the other’s presence nearly unbearable, resulting in a series of incidents — including fires — that leaves the bride convinced their wedding is destined for ruin.
But this enemies-to-lovers tale takes a new turn when Bea and Ben’s exes arrive, leaving Bea wondering how to get out of her parents’ reunion plan and Ben desperate for a way to make his ex jealous. “Maybe we should just tell everyone we’re together,” Sweeney’s Bea suggests in the trailer. “It would solve that problem for...

The actors are set to vote on the tentative agreement with the studios after the SAG-AFTRA national board approved the deal.
However, National Executive Director and Chief Negotiator Duncan Crabtree-Ireland said that the board only approved the deal by 86%, not a unanimous vote.
“This has been made possible by the membership’s phenomenal solidarity and support for their negotiating committee and we’re exceedingly grateful for all of the support from the entertainment industry unions who have rallied behind us throughout this strike,” he said.
Voting will begin on Tuesday, according to Crabtree-Ireland, and will end in the first week of December.
It comes as SAG-AFTRA’s press conference, led by President Fran Drescher and Crabtree-Ireland, to reveal some details of the proposals was delayed by around 90 minutes.
It follows a similar process to the WGA, which saw 99% of WGA members vote for their own three-year deal.

The actor’s strike has reached Day 100, as talks between SAG-AFTRA and the AMPTP remain halted.
With the continued support of its members and supportive sister unions like the WGA, IATSE and Teamsters, among many others, lead negotiator Duncan Crabtree-Ireland remains confident all involved can reach a fair deal.
“I think it’s so impressive, the unity, the strength of our members. As you’ve seen on picket lines, our members are in this fully. Our strike captains are always visible; everyone who’s coming to rallies, there is a unity of purpose that is absolutely going to bring us through until there’s a deal,” Crabtree-Ireland told Deadline on Thursday following a picket honoring Strike Captains.
“I did not expect [negotiations] would have to go so long,” he continued. “The amount of time spent without negotiating has been completely unconscionable. The studios and streamers ought to be back at the table with us now.

“Anyone But You,” the new romantic comedy hitting theaters this Christmas, had a trailer that debuted exclusively with “Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour” last weekend. Now it’s available online. And you can watch it above.
The movie stars Sydney Sweeney and Glen Powell as a seemingly perfect couple. But after a disastrous first date, the chemistry dissipates. Until, of course, they meet again at a destination wedding in Australia and decide to pretend to be a couple. At one point the movie was being described as an update of Shakespeare’s “Much Ado About Nothing,” but that messaging seems to have been dropped. Maybe it still is!

When college rivalries rekindle amidst the beauty of a destination wedding, sparks are bound to fly – not always in the romantic sense. “Anyone But You,” a new romantic comedy set for a December 22 release, takes this premise and runs with it, placing Sydney Sweeney and Glen Powell at the heart of its intricate love web.
Old Rivals, New Pretense
Sweeney and Powell, known for their roles in HBO’s “Euphoria” and the blockbuster “Top Gun: Maverick,” respectively, play Bea and Ben. College classmates who once briefly dated, their relationship soured before graduation. But destiny has its designs. Reuniting years after their college escapades, the two find themselves at a mutual friend’s wedding in Australia. With old flames and ex-partners in the mix, what do two mature adults do to save face? They pretend to be a couple, of course.

Sydney Sweeney and Glen Powell can barely disguise their disgust for one another but pretend to be the perfect couple at a destination wedding, in the trailer for the edgy rom-com Anyone But You unveiled on Thursday.
The Euphoria star plays Bea, and Top Gun: Maverick’s Powell is Ben in the enemies-to-lovers comedy about rivals reuniting and thrust together at a glitzy wedding in Australia. “Let’s just tell everyone we’re together… Could be kind of fun,” Bea tells a puzzled Ben at one point in the trailer as they then replace hate stares with fake flirty glances as their personal chemistry gets pretty complicated around wedding guests.
“There’s no way we could convince anyone we actually like each other,” Ben tells Bea, suspicious of the challenge she sets for her nemeses at the gathering. “But through pretending, they actually fall in love,” Sony’s official...
