Following the death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini in Iran, more than 50 French female artists have banded together to show their support of the ongoing protests in Iran.

What looks at first like period drama, a steamy “Downton Abbey,” set in England in the wake of World War I, morphs into something deeper and more far-reaching, as Mothering Sunday follows the changing life of a young maid, tracing the awful legacy of that devastating war and the transformations it wrought, and also depicting a literary awakening and three stages in an artist’s life.
Mothering Sunday starts out in1924 at a British country manor house on Mother’s Day, known there as Mothering Sunday, when aristocrats traditionally gave their servants the day off to visit their mothers. Young Jane Fairchild (Odessa Young) was raised in an orphanage so she has no mother to visit. However, she has other, secret plans, to visit her lover,...

A24’s SXSW opener Everything Everywhere All At Once, Bleecker Street’s Infinite Storm and Sony Pictures Classics’ Mothering Sunday offer something that’s been rare of late at the specialty box office, fresh content and choice.
They’re in a market with only one new studio wide release, Paramount’s The Lost City with Channing Tatum and Sandra Bullock. And if that film does okay it’s a nice win for everyone, said a specialty distribution executive, since it appeals to an older and female demo that’s been hard to win back to theaters. He’s got fingers crossed that the variant of the Omicron variant won’t make a new dent in the very slowly reviving market for non-superhero films. He and others have noted week after week that no specialty recovery is really possible in any case without the consistent flow of new content that we’re just starting to see.

The Batman crossed $300 million domestic on Sunday and $600 million worldwide earlier this week, and it will soon fly past the grosses of Batman v Superman ($330 million) and Joker ($335 million) to become the third highest grossing Batman film domestically behind The Dark Knight ($535 million) and The Dark Knight Rises ($448 million). The Robert Pattinson starring reboot doesn’t seem likely to pass Tdkr, but ending up as the biggest non-Nolan Batman film is a nice feather in its cap, as is being the second biggest pandemic-era film. There has been little else going on at the box office this month, but after three weeks of total dominance, The Batman finally faces a formidable box office challenger this weekend.
Though it could be a tight race, we’re expecting Paramount’s star-studded adventure rom-com The Lost City to dethrone the caped crusader for the number one spot, and the studio predicts an opening...

Woman in Love: Husson Mounts Reticent Portrait of Living Life Out Loud
At first glance, Mothering Sunday has all the impeccable furnishings evident in the classic tradition of a Merchant Ivory production—beautiful cinematography enrobing desires repressed by class and gender featuring high profile British talent. Such comparisons eventually reveal themselves to be superficial in this third film from France’s Eva Husson, making her English language debut with this adaptation of celebrated author Graham Swift’s 2016 novel.

“Mothering Sunday,” director Eva Husson’s film of Graham Swift’s novel, begins with the words, “Once upon a time,” which are repeated by the heroine Jane Fairchild as we see her open face in close-up.
She eventually begins furiously scrubbing something with a cloth, which lets us know that she is a servant, and a title lets us know that it is supposed to be Mother’s Day in England in 1924. But not everything is as it seems here.
The tone of “Mothering Sunday” is faintly absurd at first in a way that feels deliberate. There are static and pretty shots of grand interiors by cinematographer Jamie Ramsay (“Moffie”) and some extremely flattering lighting on Young and Josh O’Connor (“The Crown”), who plays Jane’s lover Paul Sheringham; there is one shot of them together near some white roses that is particularly swoon-worthy because of the way the light...

Much of the action takes place on one balmy Sunday in March of 1924 in Eva Husson’s grand Mothering Sunday (a highlight of the Cannes Film Festival), based on the 2016 novel by Graham Swift, with a screenplay by Alice Birch, costumes by three-time Oscar winner Sandy Powell and a score by Morgan Kirby (Husson’s Bang Gang: A Modern Love Story and Girls Of The Sun). Orphaned Jane Fairchild (Odessa Young) works as a maid at the sprawling English country estate owned by the Nivens, Godfrey (Colin Firth) and Clarrie. A picnic is planned, which doubles as a celebration of an engagement.
The Nivens meet their friends, the Sheringhams (Emily Woof and Craig Crosbie), whose son Paul (Josh O’Connor) is to marry Emma (Emma D'Arcy), daughter of Giles and Sylvia Hobday (Simon...

As we limp into the third year of the pandemic, placating platitudes like “nothing is ever set in stone” continue to be the order of the day, as does tremendous flexibility when it comes to something relatively minor like, oh, when your next favorite movie is coming out. Despite the unpredictability of 2020 and 2021, female filmmakers continue to make great strides, from winning the top awards at the majority of last year’s biggest festivals, notching only the second woman to win the Best Director Oscar (Chloé Zhao for “Nomadland”), and churning out big-time box office hits.
While it’s still unclear if 2022 will provide a bounceback for the box office and its rising (and established) women talents, there are some positive indicators. According to the latest study from the Celluloid Ceiling, the longest-running and most comprehensive study of women’s employment in film, women directors were up overall in 2020. Women...

Eva Husson's Mothering Sunday arrives in American theaters in February. If you are in the UK, you can already stream or rent the movie online. This period drama marks the return of Glenda Jackson to the big-screen after years in Parliament and brief stints on stage. So it seems logical to celebrate this tremendous thespian now, who remains one of the strangest Oscar favorites in Academy history. I've written about her 1970 victory for Women in Love before, but Jackson's career is vaster than the fruitful collaboration with Ken Russell. For instance, on TV, she played the definitive dramatization of Elizabeth I in the BBC's 1971 miniseries Elizabeth R and won two Emmys for her efforts. Concurrently, the actress also played the 16th-century monarch on film.

Set between three different periods in the life of a writer and maid Jane (Odessa Young), “Mothering Sunday” earned positive reviews after it premiered at Cannes in the summer for its depiction of the inter-class romance between Jane and the son of a neighboring family, Paul (Josh O’Connor), as well as grief, loneliness, and sensuality. Sony Pictures Classics, which is releasing the film in the U.S., has debuted the official American trailer below.
Based on Graham Swift’s 2016 novel, “Mothering Sunday” begins on the British Mother’s Day, where maids are given a rare day off. With her employers (Colin Firth and Olivia Colman) out, Jane gets a chance to spend some time with her secret lover, Paul, a romance that must be kept secret due to Paul’s engagement to another woman. Jared Mobarak said in his TIFF review, “[An] air of unforgettable loss is present throughout Eva Husson’s remarkably assured Mothering Sunday. Palace Cinemas national programming director Kim Petalas will step down from his role in late December after some 30 years with the company.
However, while he is leaving to spend more time with his family, he will continue to advise the exhibitor in his semi-retirement.
Of his decision, the industry veteran – also the director of the British Film Festival – tells If: “I felt that it was time, after such a long innings, to allow somebody else to come in with some fresh ideas, and for me to assist and help out wherever I can.
“It’s hard to leave an industry and in particular, an organisation, that I just love so much. I’ll do anything in the background to assist Palace moving forward.”
Petalas has always had an “incredible passion” for film, and started at Palace developing the group booking business, before stepping into the programming director role some 28 years ago.

Three decades after her start in show business, Sandy Powell has made such a mark with her work, that “costume designer” is often not needed as a prefix because people know the name. And if they don’t, they know the Brit artisan’s face and her fiery orange hair.

Above: Steven Soderbergh’s Kafka (1991)In her essay “On Criticism,” Abby Sun notes: “Film festivals are equally sites of inclusion and exclusion, of abundance and scarcity. In fact, they thrive off these paradoxes.” This seems to be the case at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), where an ongoing tension between commercial aspirations and professed values tends to yield more breadth than depth. Once called the Festival of Festivals, TIFF started out in 1976 as a showcase of the best titles from other international film festivals. A bit of borrowing from earlier fests like Berlinale and Cannes continues to this day. At the same time, overlapping dates with fall rivals like Venice and Telluride—and the New York Film Festival following closely behind—charge TIFF with the competitive urgency to premiere A-list titles first. In the last few years, the presentation of the TIFF People’s Choice Award to the most...
