History repeats itself in this ingenious but surprisingly heartfelt sci-fi, which takes the premise of Groundhog Day and fashions from it a poignant statement about life and mortality. Refreshingly for the genre, it focuses on a middle-aged woman — a scientist-slash-physicist, even — whose 55th birthday and final breath will occur within the same week. But though there is an element of resistance to the latter, Omni Loop is unusual in that it isn’t simply about breaking the cycle; Bernardo Britto’s film is about facing the inevitable, gently phasing out the genre elements to reach an understated but emotional climax.
Zoya Lowe, when we first meet her, is a little girl who, a voiceover tells us, is predicted “to do incredible things one day” and “change the world”. The next time we see her, Zoya is now played by Mary-Louise Parker and things are not so positive: X-rays show a...

“Omni Loop” begins at the midway point of “Groundhog Day.” Within the first five minutes, we learn that Zoya Lowe (Mary-Louise Parker) is stuck in a time loop that sees her reliving the last week of her life. She wakes up, receives a terminal diagnosis, spends some doctor-recommended quality time with her family, gets a nosebleed, takes a pill, and wakes up in the hospital again. Again and again, until she can predict exactly when a bird is going to poop on the bench where she sits with a chatty resident of her mom’s retirement home. It’s a priceless opportunity to delay the inevitable, and honestly? She’s over it.
There’s one detail of Zoya’s dilemma not mentioned above that really illuminates what type of move this is: Zoya isn’t dying of a brain tumor or an aggressive cancer, but a black hole in her chest.

One of the distinguishing features that has propelled Mary-Louise Parker’s rise through the ranks of stage actors has been a searching quality she brings to plays such as “Proof” and “How I Learned to Drive,” as if there are other worlds beyond where she is immediately stationed and places her characters can’t reach no matter how much they extend themselves. Although Parker’s been great in films and TV, too, she’s hasn’t had the same opportunity onscreen to demonstrate her curiosity about the unknown. That becomes the main attraction of “Omni Loop,” writer-director Bernardo Britto’s melancholy time-travel drama, which stirs the kind of mixed emotions that Parker’s Zoya feels, having a week left to live and the ability to stave off the inevitable with a bottle full of blue pills that take her back five days at a time.

Unlike the Miami transit service that gives the film its title and gets from first to final stop in just 16 minutes, Omni Loop takes time to wade through its tangled thicket of set-up and draw you in. But Bernardo Britto’s near-future sci-fi — about death, time travel and the cherished gifts in life we take for granted while pursuing that elusive something more — sneaks up on you. The same goes for the expertly synced performances of Mary-Louise Parker, bringing her characteristic flinty authenticity to a role that could easily have drowned in quirk, and Ayo Edebiri, demonstrating once again that she’s in the top tier of emerging American actors.
In a brief prologue, a 12-year-old girl (Riley Elise Fincher-Foster) stumbles upon a bottle of pills in the greenest of fields. “You’re gonna do incredible things one day,” a voice in her head tells her. “You’re gonna change the world.

Kristin Cavallari's Guide for Lauren Conrad and The Hills Parents-to-Be: 'Really Go Off of Your Gut'
Just like the lyrics from The Hills theme song, Kristin Cavallari agrees “the rest is still unwritten” for first-time parents.
The reality star-turned-entrepreneur — who is mom to sons Camden, 4, and Jaxon, 3, and 18-month-old daughter Saylor — has a surplus of parenting advice and she’s passing some of them on to Lauren Conrad, Whitney Port and Heidi Montag — all of whom are pregnant for the first time.
“I would give everyone the same advice, whether it be The Hills cast or anyone: every baby and every situation is different,” Cavallari, 30, tells People.

In college, I used to roll my eyes when my good friend, Courtney, welled up while watching NBC’s critically acclaimed White House drama The West Wing.
“Are you crying because something happened, or are you just crying because of America?” I’d ask sarcastically. I was a casual viewer, and usually hadn’t paid much attention to what President Bartlet and his team were up to on any given week.
“America!” she’d respond, dabbing at her eyes and laughing. I laughed, too, because — even while in the thrall of a brilliantly written, expertly acted TV series — who gets...

It’s getting to be that time of year where if you listen closely, you can hear millions of parents asking soon-to-be graduates about their plans for the future. I’ve heard that millennials are adult babies and back in the day dinosaurs walked uphill both ways and payed for their entire tuition with the quarters they earned selling lemonade during the summer. Which is to say: the financial and social pressures shouldered by recent graduates are very real existential threats. Thankfully, small comfort though it may be, the disenchanted former student has more than a few cinematic role models to choose from. For many years, Romany Malco has been the go-to “funny black guy” for many movies and television shows, though he’ll probably always be remembered for his role as Jay in Judd Apatow’s The 40 Year Old Virgin, where he got his big break. Since then, he also played Conrad on the show Weeds and appeared in quite a few movies produced by Will Packer.
In the David E. Talbert ensemble comedy Almost Christmas, Malco takes on a more serious role as Christian Meyers, the eldest son of Danny Glover’s Walter Meyers, who has returned home to spend Christmas with the family. At the same time, Christian is campaigning for the Senate, something that tends to distract him from the family drama while putting Malco in a more serious role.

Merle Oberon movies: Mysterious star of British and American cinema. Merle Oberon on TCM: Donning men's clothes in 'A Song to Remember,' fighting hiccups in 'That Uncertain Feeling' Merle Oberon is Turner Classic Movies' Star of the Month of March 2016. The good news: the exquisite (and mysterious) Oberon, whose ancestry has been a matter of conjecture for decades, makes any movie worth a look. The bad news: TCM isn't offering any Oberon premieres despite the fact that a number of the actress' films – e.g., Temptation, Night in Paradise, Pardon My French, Interval – can be tough to find. This evening, March 18, TCM will be showing six Merle Oberon movies released during the first half of the 1940s. Never a top box office draw in the United States, Oberon was an important international star all the same, having worked with many of the top actors and filmmakers of the studio era.

Last night, LeBron James came as close as any player has in 46 years (since Jerry West in '69) to winning the NBA Finals Mvp for a losing team. What he did in carrying a team of scrubs and/or Knicks castoffs to within two games of a championship was otherworldly, not just for his own play, but for the complete ineptitude of his supporting cast whenever he wasn't on the floor. It had me wondering if there was a TV equivalent. I'm not talking about a great performance in an otherwise bad show, because we've seen plenty of those (Matthew Perry in "Studio 60," for instance), but a Hall of Fame performance that transforms a show that would otherwise be unwatchable into something seemingly great in its own right. I put the question out on Twitter this morning, and got some interesting responses: @sepinwall Orphan Black ... — Tormund Clientsbane (@LukeMayeux) June 17, 2015 Certainly,...

Angel has its fair share of brooding, tragic figures populating the DVD cases. That's appropriate, given that its main man can't ever have a proper relationship and worse still, has had to give up the one girl who might just have had a shot at being Mrs Angel. Oh, the long list of ballads you could write about this one. But then we also have Wesley and his troubled childhood, Fred and her slightly-longer-than-intended camp dimension vacation – and of course, creeping back to the première season, there's Doyle.
So far, Doyle's been something of a closed book. Episodes such as Rm w/a Vu have implied haunted pasts, but they've never got to the root of the problem. The Longest Week really wants you to know how smart it is. From its opening frames (analyst’s office, stuttered Allen-esque musings on Freud) the whole affair practically oozes snoot. You tread a fine line with these kind of films, running the extreme risk of completely alienating your audience with every achingly spacious apartment and pompous musing on theatre. Frasier and The Royal Tenenbaums did it right, most recently Mutual Friends did it wrong.
The line between charm and bemusement is fine, yet The Longest Week manages to dance all over it, then traipse it out into the parking lot and back again. Its smorgasbord of influences never really goes anywhere, alternately charming and irritating on its meandering way to nowhere in particular.
The titular week kicks off as Conrad Valmont (Jason Bateman) – a privileged manchild used to the finer things in life – is gently hurled out onto the street.

There's only so much goodwill one can muster for the procession of dishonoured or geriatric movie icons wheeled back into service for this dismal third instalment of Sylvester Stallone's Expendables franchise. While the movie is full of death-defying escapes, all the star power in the world can't overcome two insurmountable obstacles - an abysmally structured script that sorely tests the patience and inexplicably ineffective direction that reduces big name entrances to a whimper and turns every set piece into an alienating and incoherent whirl of bangs and flashes.
The 'geri-action' genre has been widely derided, but the underrated Escape Plan and The Expendables 2 provided plenty of escapist thrills and metatextual laughs.

Seinfeld certainly had its provocative moments (see: “sponge-worthy”). So it’s hard to imagine that there was any subject too controversial for the hit comedy. But one topic did manage to cross the line: guns.
The cast and crew refused to shoot what would have been the show’s ninth episode, “The Bet.” The second season episode, written by Borat director Larry Charles, followed the friends making a bet whether or not Julia Louis-Dreyfus’ Elaine Benes would purchase a gun for protection. Angel & Faith: Season 10 #2-3
Written by Victor Gischler

Published by Dark Horse Comics
Three issues into the new season of Angel & Faith and it is becoming apparent that the title of the comic is a tad misleading; at least, when met with the expectations of what last season’s Angel & Faith was. While last volume was very much a “team up” series between the two lost souls of the Buffyverse, the current volume has thus far divided them. The ampersand separating Angel and Faith in the title has taken on new meaning. This is a comic telling two stories concurrently: the story of Angel, and the story of Faith. It’s an interesting approach, and doesn’t cheapen the heartfelt ending of last volume’s Angel & Faith.

Sly! Arnie! Ford! Gibson! Snipes! Statham! Crews! It’s likely that you already know what to expect from The Expendables 3 (possibly aside from the appearance of Frasier Crane, cementing 2014 as the year of Added Grammer) and this new trailer serves up exactly what the franchise has come to rely on. So prepare for more booms, bangs, knives, smirks, bullets, planes and choppers. Subtlety? You’ll find it cowering in a corner wearing a flak jacket. The Expendables 3 finds our heroes targeted by an old friend turned vicious enemy. Conrad Stonebanks (Gibson), who co-founded the original group with Stallone’s Barney Ross, has since become an arms trader and decides to take out the gang. But when Barney recruits some fresh blood to help tackle the threat, the younglings are inconveniently captured, which means the regular blend of duffers, punch-chuckers and dudes (including some new / old recruits such as...

“Angel & Faith: Season 10” #1
Written by Victor Gischler
Art by Will Conrad
Colours by Michelle Madsen
Executive Produced by Joss Whedon
Published by Dark Horse
Immediately upon opening this book, it’s clear this is a Buffyverse comic unlike any we’ve seen in some time. Aesthetically, the debut issue of Angel & Faith‘s second series may even seem a little jarring at first, being so different from Rebekah Isaacs’ work on the previous volume. Will Conrad’s textured illustrations and noir/thriller-esque scene compositions as well as Michelle Madsen’s dark colour palette bring forth a return to Angel’s TV series roots, as well as Idw comic run. This looks radically different than any other Buffyverse comic published by Dark Horse in the last seven years, and its darkness could become a beacon of light this season. This issue looks most alive during its nighttime scenes, with Angel walking...

Following the success of Mortal Kombat: Legacy and Mortal Kombat: Legacy II, Kevin Tancharoen is once again delivering high quality scripted programming to the Machinima audience.
Here’s the shady skinny: Government-funded scientist Professor Gable unearths five people who have special gifts and seem to be a portent in the next evolutionary step for mankind. If he can harness the source of their gifts, he could use them for the good of the world... or for evil.
Eliza Dushku ("Angel," "Buffy the Vampire Slayer") plays an unwitting pawn in this nefarious program in the action-packed pilot which debuted yesterday. Basically, she kicks a lot of ass as she tries to make sense of what is happening to her. (It reminded me a little bit, in spirit anyway, of the short-lived Dushku television series "Dollhouse.")

This feature-length spinoff from a Danish TV show made by Zentropa offers some badass bad taste to match Borat
Klown is making an appearance in the UK three years after it was made. It's a feature-length spinoff from a cult Danish TV comedy and effectively an attempt from Denmark's legendary Zentropa studios to offer us some badass bad taste to match Borat, The Hangover, Curb Your Enthusiasm and the like. In its cheerfully offensive and bizarre way, Klown is often funny. Frank Hvam plays the hapless Frank, a guy trying to convince his girlfriend he could be a responsible father: so he agrees (resentfully) to take his shy nephew on a canoeing holiday being organised by his dissolute buddy Casper (Casper Christensen). The problem is that Casper secretly wants to stop off at a surreally lavish and entirely preposterous riverside brothel owned by a rich friend, whom Frank has already...

My fellow Revenge-ineers are well aware that (too?) often it’s people from Emily’s yesteryears who complicate the scheme queen’s plotting. So perhaps you’ll find it as welcome a change of pace as I do that, in this week’s episode, it isn’t someone from her history who appears poised to muck up her get-even-detta, it’s someone from Daniel’s. At any rate, a blast from her fiancee’s past is but one of the erstwhile Amanda’s problems in “Dissolution.”

The Good Wife! The Vampire Diaries! The Walking Dead! General Hospital! The TV Addict Week in Rewind
Best Night Of Television: Between Revenge, The Good Wife, Masters Of Sex and The Walking Dead, Sunday night and a DVR could keep a TV lover happy for the entire week.
Oddest Tradition: “So,” asked The Vampire Diaries’ Stefan of Mystic Falls’ Remembrance Day, “we have a holiday dedicated to burying people alive?” We’ll drink to that!
Tackiest Ads: Promos for the game Battlefield 4 feature gamers describing things like stabbing people, destroying and other horrors of war gleefully.
Worst Idea Ever: Glee is considering Kurt to the virulently anti-gay Russia. Sorry, but a show that was too afraid to address teen drug abuse head-on when given the opportunity can’t be trusted with something so incredibly incendiary.
Best Halloween Costumes: General Hospital’s cast donned some outrageously fun outfits, including badguy Faison, who did a dead-on impression of Beetlejuice!

This Halloween week may have been a bit low on costumes (that was mostly last week in the world of TV!) but the small screen definitely didn't scrimp on the big reveals and game-changers. Carol turned out to be The Walking Dead's murderer while Arrow's Black Canary was unmasked as a long-known, definitely not dead character. Patrick Jane got both stabbed and one step closer to finding out the identity of Red John on The Mentalist, while it was Patrick who had attempted to kill Conrad and Father Paul on Revenge. On The Vampire Diaries, Nadia was revealed to be Katherine's long-lost daughter, and a major character died on Ravenswood. Yeah, the CaptainSwan kiss on Once Upon A Time was quite the...

From the Press Release:
Announced at New York Comic Con, Dark Horse is bringing the Whedonverse into its tenth season with the help of fan favorite authors Christos Gage and Victor Gischler.
“In Buffy, Season 10 is going to be about bringing friendships back together, while in Angel & Faith, relationships are shattered. Magic is starting to come back into the world, but in some surprising ways, like that vampire we saw standing in the sunlight at the end of Season 9,” says Editor-in-Chief Scott Allie.
Buffy The Vampire Slayer Season 10
Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season 10 is slated for 30 issues, written by Christos Gage and illustrated by Rebekah Issacs with covers by long-time series artist Steve Morris.

"Marvel's Agents of Shield" has added a new actor in a recurring role. "Ghost Whisperer" alum David Conrad will join Season 1 of the new ABC show as an undisclosed character, TVLine reports.
ABC wouldn't comment on the casting, but TVLine believes that Conrad could play the part of a "brilliant and quirky scientist" in his mid-40s who the production has been searching for. If that's the case, it could be that Conrad is a part of the secret villainous Project Centipede that is trying to manufacture superpowers (or at least that seems to be the organization's goal based on the pilot).
It also could be that Conrad is playing a member of the Shield organization who fans don't meet in the pilot, though that's not as fun a speculation, especially since Agents Fitz and Simmons have the science angle down in the "Agents" team. Regardless, it's nice to see...
