Mk2 Films, the Paris-based outfit behind Justine Triet’s Oscar-nominated “Anatomy of a Fall,” is set to restore Robert Bresson’s “Four Nights of a Dreamer,” a romantic drama which competed at the Berlinale in 1971 and disappeared from screens in 1985.
MK2 Films, the division of a major arthouse cinema chain in France, will digitize “Four Nights of a Dreamer” in 4K and will bring it to global theatres in 2024.
“Four Nights of a Dreamer” is the 10th film directed by Bresson and the only one which wasn’t restored. His other credits include “Mouchette,” “Au Hasard Balthazar” and “Pickpocket.”
Inspired by Fyodor Dostoevsky’s novel “White Nights,” “Four Nights of a Dreamer” revolves around a meeting on the Pont Neuf between a dreamy young man and a distraught young woman who will confide in each other over four nights. Updated: German film master Wim Wenders was greeted like a rock star in Lyon, France, where he received an honorary tribute on Friday evening (Oct. 21) at the Lumiere Festival, a week-long celebration of classic cinema headed by Cannes festival boss Thierry Fremaux.
“I’ve received prizes in my life but this time it’s different, it’s the the prize of cinema!” said Wenders after stepping on stage to the beat of Texas’ “I Don’t Want a Lover.” Glancing at Fremaux who was standing nearby, Wenders added, with a cheeky smile, “I don’t want to say that a Palme d’Or is nothing. But the Lumiere Prize is unique and I’m proud of it!” Wenders, who won the Palme d’Or with “Paris, Texas,” is considered a Cannes regular. He’s presented his most iconic films there, including “Wings of Desire” which won best director. This year,...

MK2 Films has acquired a collection of films and TV series directed by Bruno Dumont, the award-winning French director behind “Life of Jesus” and “Humanity.”
The acquisition, unveiled during Mipcom Cannes, covers the bulk of the director’s work, spanning eight films and TV series including “Li’l Quinquin,” which premiered at Cannes’ Directors’ Fortnight. MK2 Films will represent rights to some of these titles, in France and/or international markets, apart from a few titles like “Slack Bay” whose global rights are still handled by Memento International.
“Bruno Dumont is, of course, a major figure of contemporary cinema,” said Nathanaël Karmitz, MK2’s chairman of the executive board. Karmitz praised Dumont for the “originality of his unusual, unpredictable [films], veering from gravitas to some unnerving, comedic tangents.” He continued, “Iconoclastic and consistently courageous in its form, his work perfectly represents the free and ambitious cinema that we are proud to promote.

Legend has it Renate Reinsve’s still running with a joyful expression, but Joachim Trier is soon bringing her back into the fold: with regular co-writer Eskil Vogt he’s penned Sentimental Value, their follow-up to your ex-girlfriend’s favorite movie The Worst Person in the World, and which starts shooting next August with MK2 aboard. [Variety]
Described by Agat Films’ Juliette Schrameck and Mk’s Nathanaël Karmitz as a story of “family, memory and how we need to rewrite the stories we tell about ourselves in order to survive,” it concerns Nora (Reinsve), an actor, and her sister Agnes as they grieve the loss of their mother––amidst which their father, Gustav, returns from a long absence. A “once-celebrated filmmaker,” he presents the script for his planned comeback to Nora, who “categorically refuses the role,” eventually turning to a Hollywood actress, and with shooting underway in Norway, he “seizes the...

One person’s “Worst Person in the World” is another filmmaker’s new favorite collaborator.
Norwegian filmmaker Joachim Trier, director of the cult-favorite coming-of-age romance “The Worst Person in the World,” is reteaming with that film’s star, Renate Reinsve, for “Sentimental Value.” The show-business drama will be their second film together after she won the Best Actress award at the 2021 Cannes Film Festival for portraying a restless, mercurial spirit Julie. “The Worst Person in the World” was nominated for Best Original Screenplay (Trier with Eskel Vogt) and Best International Feature at the 94th Academy Awards.
As first reported by Variety, “Sentimental Value” follows an actor named Nora (played by Reinsve) and her sister Agnes (yet to be cast), both grieving the death of their mother. Meanwhile, their estranged father, a formerly successful filmmaker named Gustav, re-enters their lives with a comeback script, offering the leading role to Nora. She refuses.

Norwegian filmmaker Joachim Trier will next direct “Sentimental Value” (working title), a family drama with Renate Reinsve, who won best actress in Cannes for her role in Trier’s Oscar-nominated 2021 film “The Worst Person of the World,” attached to star in.
“Sentimental Value” will follow Nora (Reinsve), an actor, and her sister Agnes, who are grieving the loss of their mother while their father Gustav reappears in their lives after a long absence. Gustav, a once-celebrated filmmaker, has written a script for a comeback movie and offered the main part to his daughter Nora, but she categorically refuses the role. During a career retrospective in France, Gustav meets an adoring Hollywood star and offers her the part intended for Nora. When the film starts shooting back home in Norway, Gustav seizes the opportunity to repair his bond with Nora and her sister.

The Lumière Festival’s International Classic Film Market (Mifc) in Lyon, France, is celebrating its 10th edition this year with a wide-ranging program focusing on bolstering classic film distribution, the prospects of new commercial territories, film education and a focus on Spain’s heritage film sector.
The Mifc, which runs Oct. 18-21, kicks off with a keynote by Gian Luca Farinelli, director of Italy’s Cineteca di Bologna film archive. Market organizers praise Farinelli for “allowing classic films to be found, restored, reviewed and, most often, put back on the market firstly through the Il Cinema Ritrovato Festival, exhibition and distribution activities within the foundation, while maintaining strong links with cinemathques from around the world.”
Farinelli’s work, the Mifc notes, “contributes to ensuring that the history of cinema is always active, alive and accessible.” Many who work in the classic film sector would second that opinion.

The 74th annual Cannes Film Festival beat the odds by delivering two weeks of nonstop movies — and major stars such as Matt Damon, Regina King and Timothée Chalamet — in the middle of a global pandemic.
It wasn’t an easy task. Variety has learned that the festival fronted more than $1 million to cover the costs of regular, free Covid testing to approximately 28,000 attendees. Those from the European Union could bypass such procedures by showing proof of vaccination, but there were no guarantees that people wouldn’t get sick as the Delta variant spread globally.
When French actor Léa Seydoux, who had three films in competition, canceled her trip to Cannes after testing positive for Covid-19, which she contracted on a movie set, some feared that it was the beginning of a wave of cases.
But so far, there have been no reports of major outbreaks out of Cannes. Even rumors...

MK2, the venerable family-owned film group which operates a leading arthouse multiplex chain in France and Spain, is emerging from the pandemic stronger, cooler and more ambitious than ever.
Nathanaël and Elisha Karmitz, who succeeded their father Marin at the helm of the company in 2005, have galvanized the MK2 brand with activities ranging from films, art, publishing, technology and lifestyle. The common threads between all these ventures are a taste for singularity, curation and a socially-minded approach.
After scoring big at Cannes in 2019 with Mati Diop’s “Atlantics” and Celine Sciamma’s “Portrait of a Lady on Fire,” which competed and won prizes, MK2 Films will again boast a fairly large presence for the festival’s comeback edition with nine films across several selections, including the competition with Joachim Trier’s “The Worst Person in the World,” the new Cannes Premiere section with Andrea Arnold’s “Cow,” Un Certain Regard...

Moviegoing kicked off again in the UK and France this week, with the former reopening cinemas on Monday and the latter on Wednesday. And so far, signs are very positive after roughly seven months of darkened screens in each market. Advance sales are strong and exhibitors in both are encouraged at the early results.
In the UK, all films in play on Wednesday are estimated to have grossed around £760K ($1.07M). This was the biggest day this week, up about 41% versus Tuesday. That’s largely attributable to Cineworld resuming operations at about 120 sites yesterday after opting to sit out Monday and Tuesday. The Wednesday gross is also roughly 9% over Monday. Through three days of the reopening process (which limits capacity to 50%), UK cinemas have taken in about £2M ($2.83M).
Sony’s Peter Rabbit 2: The Runaway is the runaway leader with an estimated $850K through Wednesday. There’s clear appetite...

If all goes as planned, the Lumière Film Festival will kick off this month in Lyon, France, to again celebrate classic cinema and fete such guests as Viggo Mortensen and Oliver Stone.

Javier Bardem is set to return to his native Spain to star in new feature “The Good Boss,” reuniting with director Fernando León de Aranoa, The Mediapro Studio and many of the social themes of 2002’s “Mondays in the Sun,” a movie that sealed a young Bardem’s acting reputation.
France’s MK2 Films, the Paris-based production, sales and exhibition company, has acquired international sales rights to the film, described as an offbeat satire with darkly comedic elements.
Produced by Fernando León de Aranoa’s own label, Reposado P.C., and The Mediapro Studio, the film will begin shooting this October.
Announced on the eve of 2020’s Toronto Film Festival, the ironic dramedy has Bardem in the lead role as the titular good boss, a charismatic and seemingly benevolent owner of a family factory who thinks he could be up for another local award for business excellence.

When Europe’s theaters slowly began reopening mid-June, exhibitors were hopeful that after a few weeks spent warming up audiences with archive films and rereleases, they’d have big new U.S. movies to lure customers en masse mid-summer. But the successive delays of tentpoles such as Warner Bros.’ “Tenet” and Disney’s “Mulan” and the scrapped theatrical release of Paramount’s “The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run” have left exhibitors in dire straits.
Despite Europe’s robust local film industry, Hollywood movies tend to account for the bulk of the summer box office. Even in France, arguably the continent’s biggest nation of moviegoers, the market share of U.S. pics skyrockets to at least 70% during the season, according to U.S. analytics firm Comscore.

While the Us is preparing to begin reopening some theaters as early as next week (even if that’s entirely too soon), the bulk of theater chains seem to think that June/July time frame is much more realistic. However, around the world, the projection is even worse. As one cinema chain executive recently said, Europe, particularly France and Spain, could have theaters closed for months still.

Collections of films by iconic directors such as François Truffaut and Charlie Chaplin are heading to Netflix as part of a wide-ranging deal struck with distributor MK2 Films.

Paris-based MK2 creates joint film company with former co-founding managing director of Quebec’s Metropole Films.
Paris-based MK2 is joining forces with Canadian arthouse distributor Charles Tremblay to found a new Montreal-based film company called MK2 | Mile End.
Initially, its core activity will be distribution but there are plans to develop production, theatrical programming, virtual reality and cinema-based events in the short to medium term.
MK2| Mile End will be the exclusive distributor of MK2’s catalogue in the French-speaking Canadian territory of Quebec.
Tremblay said the association with MK2 and its managing director Nathanaël Karmitz was “a natural one”.
The move comes some 11 months after Tremblay quit his position as managing director of Metropole Films, the leading Montreal-based arthouse distribution company which he co-founded in 2005, saying he wanted “to write a new chapter” in his life.
“It was important to me to align myself with a partner with a strong and ambitious vision, and one that...

Juste la fin du monde
Director: Xavier Dolan
Writer: Xavier Dolan
During the substantial critical praise following Mommy (which tied with Jean-Luc Godard for the Jury Prize at Cannes, 2014) his fifth film in a six year period, the twenty-five year French Canadian director Xavier Dolan announced plans for an English language, Los Angeles set film The Death and Life of John F. Donovan. But following a flurry of casting news, Dolan announced he was delaying the title to shoot the French film, Juste la fin du monde (It’s Only the End of the World), an adaptation of Jean-Luc Lagarce’s play. Featuring an extravagantly notable cast, including Gaspard Ulliel, Lea Seydoux, Marion Cotillard, Vincent Cassel and Nathalie Baye (who returns to work with Dolan after 2012’s Laurence Anyways), the film concerns a terminally ill writer who returns home after a long absence to announce his death.
