Herbert Kretzmer, whose English lyrics for a then little-known French musical Les Miserables helped turn the show into a blockbuster production, has died at the age of 95.
High-profile theater figures including lyricist Tim Rice first shared the news and his agent has since confirmed it to The New York Times. Kretzmer passed away on Wednesday at his home in London, days after his 95th birthday.
Alongside his work on Les Mis, the South African-born Kretzmer was a highly-regarded UK theater and TV critic for publications including the Daily Mail. He also penned English-language lyrics to the songs of French songwriter Charles Aznavour.
Les Misérables producer Cameron Mackintosh led tributes today, saying, “It is terribly sad to hear that the great Herbert Kretzmer passed away last night after a period of illness. His wonderful words for Les Misérables will live on in his memory forever more and the Christmas season at...

As far as Andrew Davies is concerned, adapting Victor Hugo’s “Les Misérables” to the screen independent of Alain Boubil, Jean-Marc Natel, and Herbert Kretzmer’s juggernaut musical was nothing short of an overdue necessity. “I hated the musical,” the writer stated outright at the Television Critics Assn.’s winter press tour in February. “I just wanted to rescue this great book from [that] pathetic virago.”
Suffice it to say, his PBS Masterpiece version of “Les Misérables” does not wear its heart on its sleeve nearly as much as the musical’s bombastic numbers do. But Davies — whose considerable résumé includes adaptations of “Pride and Prejudice,” “Vanity Fair,” and “War and Peace” — nonetheless knows how to mine timeless emotion from tomes that many might dismiss as incurably dry.
This new version of “Les Misérables” comes to us in the form of a handsome, sweeping, straightforward series of six episodes. Davies and...

French-Armenian singer-songwriter-actor Charles Aznavour, best known for songs such as “She,” “Yesterday When I Was Young” and “For Mama,” has died. Aznavour, who was 94, died in his sleep from a cardiac arrest in his home in Mouries, France, according to his agent.
Aznavour sold more than 180 million records and appeared in more than 60 films. Bob Dylan considered Aznavour, sometimes referred to as a Gallic Frank Sinatra, to be “one of the greatest live performers” he’d ever seen. CNN named him Entertainer of the Century in 1998, and he received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame last year.
French President Emmanuel Macron tweeted Monday: “Charles Aznavour was profoundly French, deeply attached to his Armenian roots and known throughout the world. He has accompanied the joys and pain of three generations. His masterpieces, the tone of his voice, his unique radiance will long survive him.”

Graceful stage actor who stood out in Doctor Who on TV and the film Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory
In a long and distinguished career, the actor Aubrey Woods, who has died aged 85, covered the waterfront, from West End revues and musicals to TV series and films, most notably, perhaps, singing The Candy Man in Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory (1971), starring Gene Wilder, and playing the Controller in the Day of the Daleks storyline in Doctor Who (1972).
Tall and well-favoured in grace and authority on the stage, he played Fagin in the musical Oliver! for three years, succeeding Ron Moody in the original 1960 production. He was equally in demand on BBC radio, writing and appearing in many plays, including his own adaptations of the Mapp and Lucia novels by Ef Benson (he was a vice-president of the Ef Benson society).

Most importantly, Mackintosh and I analyze the mega-successful feature film adaptation of Les Miserables, directed by Tom Hooper, and Mackintosh relates many fascinating...

This evening’s Oscar ceremony is now over, and with the dust settling on the biggest awards ceremony of the entire year, and the winners and losers celebrating and commiserating together, we’ve put together a full list of the winners (as well as the beaten nominees) for this year’s awards.

Just like Anne Hathaway winning Best Supporting Actress at the 85th Academy Awards, Adele was a shoe-in for Best Original Song. She still seemed surprised to win when she took the stage alongside Paul Epworth, though.
"Thank you so much. This is amazing," she said, coming close to tears as she listed off the many people she had to thank. "And my man, I love you, baby."
Adele left time for Epworth to give his thanks as well, but she couldn't resist tossing in a nod to all the other prestigious actors, directors and even songwriters in the Dolby Theatre there with them. "You're all amazing as well," she said as a farewell.
Also nominated for Best Song were J. Ralph for "Before My Time" from "Chasing Ice," Walter Murphy and Seth MacFarlane for "Everybody Needs a Best Friend" from "Ted," Mychael Danna and Bombay Jayashri from "Life of Pi" and Claude-Michel Schonberg,...

Sorry, Anne Hathaway. It’s Sally Field’s turn to shine again! Read on for all my Oscar predictions for the Feb. 24 awards ceremony.
Anne Hathaway may be the frontrunner for Best Actress In A Supporting Role at the Feb. 24 Oscars, but I sense an upset coming our way. My girl Sally Field is nominated as well and I like her, I really like her! So does all of Hollywood — Sally won an Oscar both times she was nominated in the past. Plus, she’s a legend! Mama Nora deserves the win for her amazing performance in Lincoln. Furthermore, find out who else I think will take home an Academy Award this year!
My Oscar Predictions:
Best Actor In A Leading Role:
Bradley Cooper in Silver Linings Playbook
Daniel Day-Lewis in Lincoln
Hugh Jackman in Les Misérables
Joaquin Phoenix in The Master
Denzel Washington in Flight
Who Will Win: Daniel Day-Lewis.

The Oscars are almost here! The 85th Academy Awards is set to air this Sunday, Feb. 24., with host Seth MacFarlane. The award season has been very generous to films such as Argo and Silver Linings Playbook, but as many know by now, you can never quite be certain about who will win once the opening monologue begins. Who will take home Best Picture? Actor and Actress in a Leading Role? And what about Directing? We are breaking down the top 10 categories from the evening on who should win and who probably will.

This is perfect for Oscar parties, because the lead keeps changing. The winner is the one with the most points at the end. A perfect score is 300. The singer is the favourite to win the Academy award for best original song on Sunday night, but she faces stiff competition from Scarlett Johansson, a talking bear and more
No matter that she won the award for best British single, Adele didn't show up at the Brits at the O2 in London on Wednesday night. What could have been more important? Well, the Academy Awards, that's what.
It would be nice to have one of those on the shelf. Bob Dylan no less seemed especially pleased to have bagged the Academy award for best original song with Things Have Changed in 2001 after it featured in Curtis Hanson's Wonder Boys. "God bless you all with peace, tranquility and good will," he was even heard to quip to the academy. In her excitement, Adele tweeted when she heard she'd been nominated this year.
Oh my god I feel like Meryl Streep!

New York -- Someone is dreaming the dream: "Les Miserables" is coming back to Broadway.
Producer Cameron Mackintosh said Tuesday that the national tour of the epic musical about life in 19th-century France will make a stop on Broadway in March 2014 at a Shubert theater.
The move comes on the heels of the Oscar-nominated big screen adaptation directed by Tom Hooper and starring Hugh Jackman, Russell Crowe and Anne Hathaway.
It will mark the third time the show has made it to Broadway. The original landed in 1987 and played 6,680 performances, ranking as the third-longest-running musical in Broadway history. A revival was mounted in 2006 but closed in 2008.
Mackintosh, who has also been involved in producing "The Phantom of the Opera," "Mary Poppins," "Miss Saigon" and "Cats," is betting that the appetite for "Les Miserables" will only be increased by the movie. History has shown he might be right: Film version of...

With the Oscars almost upon us, everyone is speculating about who will win. It’s always a challenge to pick the winners because so much more than just good quality goes into winning one of those gold statues. Here are our picks about who will likely win this year’s Academy Awards.

The ceremony is over here in London, bringing together some of the finest and most talented people in the film industry under the same roof for one night. The BAFTAs are this country’s highest honour in film, and they have handed out their awards for the 66th time to those whom they deem the most deserving in the past year in film.

Norah Jones will sing the jazzy Everybody Needs a Best Friend from the stuffed-bear comedy Ted on the upcoming Oscar telecast, the producers have announced.
The tune, which is up for Original Song, was co-written by Academy Awards host (and Ted filmmaker) Seth MacFarlane — so when producers Craig Zadan and Neil Meron revealed last week that Adele would be crooning her nominated song from Skyfall, it was easy to assume this number would be part of the telecast as well.

It’s always a question: Will the Academy Awards telecast feature performances of the Original Song nominees?
Sometimes the answer is no, but this time … it’s looking like a yes.
Producers have indicated the frontrunner in that category, Adele’s massively popular theme to the James Bond thriller Skyfall, will be performed live during the Feb. 24 ceremony.
While the other nominees weren’t mentioned in the announcement, it’s unlikely one nominee will be allowed to perform unless the other contenders are welcome too — especially since one of them is written by Oscar host Seth MacFarlane and another could be performed by Hugh Jackman.
