“Leopoldstadt” asserted itself as the dominant play of the season, picking up the Best Play prize. Tom Stoppard’s drama has been perched atop Gold Derby’s Tony Awards odds since we launched the prediction center. With Tony favorite “Kimberly Akimbo” out of the running for Best Musical (the Drama League already considered that tuner for its Off-Broadway run), “Some Like it Hot” cruised to a win in that category. It prevailed over four of its fellow Tony nominees: “& Juliet,” “New York, New York,” and “Shucked.”

Alice left an indelible mark on American TV. Based on a relatively minor Martin Scorsese film, the weekly 30-minute sitcom followed the day-to-day of a widowed mom (played by Linda Lavin) who experienced car trouble in Arizona and never left. Nearly five decades after its 1976 debut, all but two of the original Alice cast members have died. Who’s still alive?

Before marrying Donald Hyatt and becoming a mom, Alice Spivak was a lounge singer in Newark, New Jersey. After her husband died in a trucking accident, she loaded up her station wagon and set her sights on Los Angele, hoping to revive her career. Fortunately for sitcom viewers, the newly inspired chanteuse and her adolescent son, Tommy, only made it as far as Phoenix before their car broke down. Intending a temporary stay, Alice rented an...

The 2022 Producers Guild of America Awards took place on Saturday, March 19 at the Fairmont Century Plaza in Los Angeles. The PGA has been one of the most reliable Oscar predictors around, thanks in large part to the fact that both the guild and the academy use the same voting system – the preferential ballot – to determine a Best Picture victor. Since 2009, PGA has forecast 9 of 12 Oscar champs.
This year, the guild overlapped with the academy on eight titles: “Belfast,” “Coda,” “Don’t Look Up,” “Dune,” “King Richard,” “Licorice Pizza,” “The Power of the Dog” and “West Side Story.” The PGA lineup was rounded out by “Being the Ricardos” and “tick, tick…Boom!,” which were swapped out for “Drive My Car” and “Nightmare Alley” at the Oscars.
For Best Animated Feature, the guild and the academy aligned four-for-five, with Oscar contenders “Encanto,” “Luca,” “The Mitchells vs the Machines” and “Raya and the Last Dragon...

CBS’ B Positive has officially closed the book on Chapter 2 — but a pair of finale cliffhangers signaled the story of Gina, Drew and the residents of Valley Hills is far from finished.
During Thursday’s season ender, Gina at last realized that she wants to pursue a relationship with Drew. Alas, when she ran out to the parking lot to confront the man she loves, he’d already driven off in his camper van, having decided to spend the next few months in Alaska to put some space between them. And though the senior residents had decided to stay put...

The actor toils as a crusading lawyer but not even the looming apocalypse can inject this strange film with excitement
The prospect of John Boyega playing an idealistic New York public defender in a John Grisham-style thriller is a very appealing one. But his talent deserves better than this clapped-out vehicle, a movie that constantly feels like it’s about to run out of narrative gas. The big gimmick here is a freaky sci-fi backdrop to the legal drama: unbeknown to the characters, the universe is about to implode (something to do with black holes causing ripples in space).
It begins 10 days before what is described as “the collapse”. Boyega is a lawyer called Casi who is only three years into his career but already burned out and disillusioned by the US justice system. You can spot he’s a good guy by his brown corduroy suit – Hollywood’s liberal crusader uniform.

“Being the Ricardos” is officially streaming on Amazon Prime Video. After debuting in theaters earlier this month, the biopic chronicling the complex romantic and professional relationship between Lucille Ball (Nicole Kidman) and Desi Arnaz (Javier Bardem), was released on the platform December 21.
Written and directed by Aaron Sorkin, “Being the Ricardos” takes audiences behind closed doors, into the writer’s room, and onto the soundstage during a critical production week of the groundbreaking hit series “I Love Lucy.” The film, set in 1952, follows Ball and Arnaz through a series of personal and professional crises that includes everything from personal accusations to a political smear campaign, all of which threaten the power couple’s marriage and careers.

I Love Lucy remains the single most influential series in television history; there is perhaps not a single sitcom in the medium’s long existence that doesn’t owe some stylistic debt to the program, and its creation and development were groundbreaking in ways that we are still trying to catch up with in 2021. Yet the one thing you won’t really get from Being the Ricardos, writer-director Aaron Sorkin’s look at a week in the life of Lucy creators and stars, and real-life couple, Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz, is a true sense of what the show was like, and how it was produced and written from week to week.
Oh sure, Being the Ricardos ostensibly takes place during the production of one episode, from the Monday table read of the script to the Friday taping of the show in front of a live audience, but it’s almost incidental to the many,...
