How does the Arri Alexa 35 perform against the Sony FX6? Well, it’s not a real match, just a fun comparison made by Linus from ShortCircuit. That’s a cool piece for those who are not familiar with the Arri Camera System. Read on.
The ShortCircuit team with the Arri camera system Taking the Arri 35 for a spin
As stated by Linus from ShortCircuit: “We’ve used quite a few different camera systems for our production here at Lmg and we ended up settling on Sony FX6 cameras to power the videos you watch, but when Arri offered to send us their new Alexa 35 camera to check out, David tried his best to convince Linus that we should switch to what the big boys use”. The candy-colored look of Barbie delivered colorist Yvan Lucas of Company 3 the FilmLight Color Award for a theatrical feature.
The third annual awards — organized by FilmLight, the maker of the Baselight color grading system, in collaboration with Camerimage — were presented Sunday at the EnergaCamerimage cinematography film festival in Toruń, Poland. From roughly 400 entries, honorees were selected by a jury chaired by Oscar-nominated cinematographer Lawrence Sher (Joker, Joker: Folie à Deux), who presented the awards.
Of his award-winning work on Barbie, which was directed by Greta Gerwig and lensed by cinematographer Rodrigo Prieto, Lucas tells The Hollywood Reporter, “Rodrigo Prieto and I both like to work together on the overall look of a film before production starts. Creating LUTs (Look Up Tables) that define the way color and contrast will be affected helps Rodrigo, the director and the department heads all work toward a common goal.

For a story about Priscilla Presley and her time with Elvis, simplicity and minimalism aren’t the words you’d use, especially when Sofia Coppola is at the helm. And yet Coppola’s “Priscilla” is a master in how to make a film on a budget and in just 30 days. “Every movie is a challenge, but the challenge was to shoot in six weeks a movie with so many scenes, different feelings and different textures,” cinematographer Philippe Le Sourd told TheWrap.
From the first minute everything was a blur. As Le Sourd laid out, pre-production required the script to be in perfect shape with at least 15-20 pages needed to be shot on the daily. And from the moment Le Sourd arrived on-set Coppola was already cutting and editing the movie. “She [Coppola] was struggling,” he said. “She was struggling with the budget and she tried to find solutions. Film cameras strike big time as it seems that Dp chose celluloid to shoot the Oscar 2024 (96th Academy Awards) contenders. The most used camera is the Arricam (Lt and St) which, you have to admit, is an amazing fact. Additionally, there are new cameras on that list. Explore the camera charts below based on the IndieWire Cinematography Survey.
Oscar 2024: Camera Manufacturers Chart Oscar 2024 contenders: Cameras and lenses
IndieWire reached out to the directors of photography whose films are among the most critically acclaimed of the year, in order to explore which cameras and lenses they used (Make sure to read the IndieWire’s article where you can find Dp’s explanation of how they used their gear). After the Southern Gothic thriller elements of 2017’s The Beguiled and the broad rom-com antics of 2020’s On the Rocks, which saw Sofia Coppola departing slightly from the aesthetic territory that she’d staked so forcefully in her earlier work, Priscilla finds the filmmaker firmly back in her wheelhouse. Based on Priscilla Presley’s 1985 biography Elvis and Me, Coppola’s latest is another impossibly photogenic tale of fame, solitude, material wealth, and female desire in a world that often contrives to deny its existence.
Spanning 14 years in the life of Priscilla (Cailee Spaeny), from her meeting Elvis (Jacob Elordi), the rock ‘n’ roll heartthrob she idolized near the German army base where he was stationed (when he was 24 and she was just 14), to her leaving their lavish Memphis home after the dissolution of their marriage, this is the most ambitious film Coppola has made to date. Writer-director Sofia Coppola adapts Priscilla Presley’s autobiography “Elvis and Me” for her A24 film “Priscilla,” starring Cailee Spaeny as the American icon alongside Jacob Elordi as Elvis.
“Priscilla” follows the eponymous heroine from meeting Elvis as a teenager to eventually leaving him and Graceland behind. The film marks Coppola’s third feature with A24 following “On the Rocks” and “The Bling Ring.” Coppola reunites with collaborators like cinematographer Philippe Le Sourd, costume designer Stacey Battat, editor Sarah Flack, and production designer Tamara Deverell for the period piece. The film charts 14 years in Priscilla’s life, starting at age 14 when she met 24-year-old Elvis.
The film premiered at the Venice Film Festival, where Spaeny won the Volpi Cup for Best Actress, and is set to screen as the Centerpiece feature at the New York Film Festival.
Director Coppola has opened up about how she could relate to Priscilla’s coming-of-age in the public eye.

At five of the last 10 Oscars, Best Cinematography has gone hand-in-hand with Best Director: Emmanuel Lubezki and Alfonso Cuaron for “Gravity” (2014); Lubezki and Alejandro G. Inarritu for both “Birdman” (2015) and “The Revenant” (2016); Linus Sandgren and Damien Chazelle for “La La Land” (2017); and Cuaron doing double duty on “Roma” (2019). Will that trend hold true this year? (Scroll down for the most up-to-date 2024 Oscar predictions for Best Cinematography.)
The academy usually regards award-winning cinematography as pretty pictures within an epic technical feat of filmmaking. While great lighting and framing are laudable on their own, having a movie that looks like it was difficult to shoot goes a long way to snagging an Oscar. Recent lensing winners “Avatar” (2009), “Inception” (2010), “Hugo” (2011), “Life of Pi” (2012), “Gravity” (2013), “Blade Runner 2049” (2018) and “1917” (2020) also took home the Oscar for Best Visual Effects.

For much of Priscilla, Sofia Coppola’s subdued but stirring repositioning of the Elvis myth from the perspective of the woman who spent 14 years as his girlfriend and wife, there’s a sense of an emotionally immature man regularly taking a doll out of its box to play romance or dress-up or even kink one night when they drop acid. But he remains determined always to return her to her original packaging, in this case that of an unworldly 9th grade schoolgirl.
The beauty of this probing study of a lonely private world in the glare of the public eye is that while it appears on the surface to show a protagonist without agency, manipulated and compartmentalized since her teens, the Priscilla Presley portrayed here with moving emotional transparency by Cailee Spaeny is a self-possessed woman always attuned to her needs, who emerges from intoxication to begin a long, painful...

Sofia Coppola is focusing on a 20th-century American princess for her first feature since 2020’s “On the Rocks”: Priscilla Presley.
After helming 2006 film “Marie Antoinette,” Coppola takes on adapting Priscilla’s 1985 memoir “Elvis and Me.” The film, titled “Priscilla,” stars “Mare of Easttown” actress Cailee Spaeny as Priscilla and “Euphoria” breakout Jacob Elordi as Elvis Presley.
Per a Deadline source, Spaeny was Coppola’s first choice to portray Priscilla, while “Euphoria” star Elordi auditioned for the role of Elvis. Coppola writes, directs, and produces “Priscilla,” which spans 12 years. Spaeny portrays Priscilla across ages 15 to 27.
Frequent Coppola collaborators cinematographer Philippe Le Sourd, costume designer Stacey Battat, editor Sarah Flack, and production designer Tamara Deverell also signed on to the A24 period piece.
Coppola’s indie “Priscilla” comes on the heels of Baz Luhrmann’s Oscar-nominated “Elvis” epic with Austin Butler as the King of Rock ‘n Roll and Olivia DeJonge as Priscilla.

Cailee Spaeny transforms into Priscilla Presley in Sofia Coppola’s Priscilla. The first trailer shows Spaeny as Priscilla meeting Elvis Presley and falling madly in love. Jacob Elordi takes on the role of Elvis.
Baz Luhrmann’s 2022 critically acclaimed Elvis brought the couple’s story to life on the screen with Austin Butler and Olivia DeJonge. Elvis, obviously, focused on the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll, while Coppola’s Priscilla tells the story of Elvis’s first love.
The film is based on Priscilla Presley’s 1985 memoir Elvis and Me, with Sofia Coppola adapting the book and directing. Dagmara Dominczyk (Succession) also stars, and Coppola, Lorenzo Mieli, and Youree Henley serve as producers.
Coppola’s behind-the-scenes team includes director of photography Philippe Le Sourd, production designer Tamara Deverell, editor Sarah Flack, costume designer Stacey Battat, and music supervisor Randall Poster. The film’s score is by Phoenix.
A24’s targeting an October 2023 theatrical release.

A24 has released the first trailer for Sofia Coppola’s “Priscilla.”
Based on Priscilla Presley’s 1985 memoir “Elvis and Me,” the biographical film follows her life and relationship with the King of Rock ‘n Roll. Cailee Spaeny stars as Priscilla, with Jacob Elordi as Elvis Presley.
Spaeny and Elordi are the latest stars to play Priscilla and Elvis Presley on screen. Olivia DeJonge and Austin Butler played the lead roles in Baz Luhrmann’s 2022 biographical music drama “Elvis,” which scored two Golden Globe nominations and one win for Butler’s performance as the iconic singer. The film went on to earn Oscar nominations for best picture, best actor and more.
“Priscilla” marks Coppola’s third collaboration with A24, following 2020’s “On the Rocks” and 2013’s “The Bling Ring.” A series adaptation of Edith Wharton’s “The Custom of the Country” is also in development between A24 and Coppola.

Jacob Elordi is just a hunk of burning love as Elvis Presley.
The “Euphoria” breakout star transforms into the King of Rock ‘n Roll for Sofia Coppola’s adaptation of Priscilla Presley’s 1985 memoir, “Elvis and Me.” Simply titled “Priscilla,” the A24 film stars Cailee Spaeny as the ex-wife of Elvis.
“Priscilla” marks Coppola’s third film with A24 since “On the Rocks” and “The Bling Ring.” The writer-director reunites with collaborators like cinematographer Philippe Le Sourd, costume designer Stacey Battat, editor Sarah Flack, and production designer Tamara Deverell for the period piece.
Coppola recently compared “Priscilla” to her 2006 film “Marie Antoinette,” calling Priscilla herself a “quintessential glamor icon” of Americana style.

It’d take approximately zero effort to supersede Baz Luhrmann’s dreadful Elvis but it’s nice that Sofia Coppola, of all people, chose to train her lens on the King. But from an aslant angle, obviously: she’s adapted Priscilla Presley’s tell-all memoir Elvis and Me, which showed the man at some of his most-complicated and least-palatable––drugs, infidelity, insecurity, which is to say a human contra the cartoon Luhrmann found more compelling.
A brief-even-by-teaser-standards teaser, cut to Spectrum’s “How You Satisfy Me,” has arrived before Priscilla‘s October release, giving first look at Cailee Spaeny and Jacob Elordi as (of course) Priscilla and Elvis, respectively. Avid Coppola fans might begin seeing where here interests lie, and the return of key creative collaborators––Philippe Le Sourd behind the camera; Sarah Flack on editing; costume designer Stacey Battat; production designer Tamara Deverell––point towards some general design.

Sure, “Marie Antoinette” and “Priscilla” are set 200 years apart, but writer-director Sofia Coppola can’t help but compare the two historical women ahead of her upcoming Priscilla Presley biopic.
Coppola’s 2006 film “Marie Antoinette” starred Kirsten Dunst as the iconic royal who reigned amid the French Revolution. Now, the “Bling Ring” helmer adapts Priscilla’s 1985 memoir “Elvis and Me” with Cailee Spaeny (“Mare of Easttown”) and Jacob Elordi playing married couple Priscilla and Elvis. Priscilla serves as an executive producer of the film.
“I’m excited to do something rooted in that Americana style for the first time. And Priscilla is a quintessential glamor icon,” Coppola told Vogue. “I was just so interested in Priscilla’s story and her perspective on what it all felt like to grow up as a teenager in Graceland. She was going through all the stages of young womanhood in such an amplified world — kind of similarly to Marie Antoinette.

Step aside Austin Butler, there’s a new Elvis in the building.
Hot off of Butler’s turn as the King of Rock ‘n Roll for Baz Luhrmann’s mind-bending biopic “Elvis,” Jacob Elordi will play the “Jailhouse Rock” crooner for A24 drama “Priscilla.”
Based on Priscilla Presley’s 1985 memoir “Elvis and Me,” the film will be directed by Sofia Coppola and star “Mare of Easttown” breakout Cailee Spaeny as the ex-wife of Elvis. Coppola also adapted Priscilla’s New York Times bestselling memoir for the big screen.
Per a Deadline source, Spaeny was Coppola’s first choice to portray Priscilla, while “Euphoria” star Elordi auditioned for the role of Elvis. The film marks Oscar winner Coppola’s first feature since “On the Rocks” starring Rashida Jones and longtime collaborator Bill Murray. Coppola also produces the film, along with Fremantle Company, American Zoetrope, and Sony’s Stage 6 Films will finance the film.

It’s nice, every so often, to find yourself squinting and emitting a tiny what the fuck at a production item. I couldn’t help—really couldn’t help; forgive the language otherwise—doing so at news, per Variety, that Sofia Coppola’s next feature is an adaptation of Priscilla Presley’s 1985 memoir Elvis and Me, whittled down to a punchier Priscilla, and will be led by Cailee Spaeny and Jacob Elordi as (of course) Priscilla and Elvis, respectively. With A24’s backing, production begins this fall.
A cursory glance over Presley’s memoir would profusely suggest Coppola’s film will center the spouse far more than Baz Luhrmann’s abysmal biopic—a troubled, drug-dependent, jealous, unfaithful man. Avid fans of the director can start to envision where Coppola’s interests lie, and the return of her primary creative collaborators—Philippe Le Sourd behind the camera; Sarah Flack on editing...

With Baz Luhrmann’s Elvis proving its bona fide hit status by crossing the 150 million domestic mark, another Elvis feature project is heating up.
The story of Priscilla Ann Presley, who married Elvis Presley, is getting the biopic treatment courtesy of filmmaker Sofia Coppola and A24.

The project is based on Priscilla Presley’s memoir, Elvis and Me. Presley was only 14 and living in Germany when she met Elvis, then 23, at a party in 1959. He was smitten, and a multiyear courtship began, with her strict parents reluctantly giving in to the persistence of the star,...

Sofia Coppola has set her sights on her next film as the Oscar-winner is set to direct the feature film Priscilla, which is based on the memoir Elvis and Me by Priscilla Beaulieu Presley with Cailee Spaeny and Jacob Elordi set to play Priscilla and Elvis Presley. Published in 1985, Presley’s intimate account of her life with Elvis became a New York Times Bestseller and an international sensation. Coppola adapted the script as well.
Insiders say Coppola had been eyeing this film for some time as her follow-up to On The Rocks and began putting the pieces together to the film off the ground by this fall. While she met with a number of actors for the Elvis role (with Elordi ultimately landing the highly coveted role), Spaeny has been her top choice from day 1 for the role of Priscilla.

Sofia Coppola honored her New York City roots — and one of its most renowned cultural institutions — with a new short film for the New York City Ballet. Shot in black-and-white by her “On the Rocks” and “The Beguiled” cinematographer Philippe Le Sourd, the film features the music of Frédéric Chopin, Igor Stravinsky, Johannes Brahms, and more, and choreography from dance legend Jerome Robbins, among others. Previewing five new works, the short was filmed on location at the David H. New York springs back to life! With the vaccine available nationwide this year, things are finally starting to return to normal. In celebration of this return, New York City Ballet made a B&w short film promoting the return of their 2021 Spring Gala. Directed by none other than filmmaker Sofia Coppola, and featuring cinematography by her latest Dp collaborator Philippe Le Sourd, the lovely 25-minute short film takes us through a number of ballet performances filmed inside of the Lincoln Center. "Since March of 2020, the artists of New York City Ballet have been unable to perform at Lincoln Center. This is their return home." The short features a selection of music from Frédéric Chopin, Igor Stravinsky, Johannes Brahms, Samuel Barber, and (of course) Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. It is only available to view online until May 20th, 2021 - and I highly recommend giving this a look, at least to admire the dancers...

She’s directed a new short film for the New York City Ballet as part of their first-ever virtual gala, now available to watch through May 20 only. Reteaming with Philippe Le Sourd, cinematographer of her last two films, the film was shot on location at the David H. Koch Theater at Lincoln Center and features a look at five new works.

“Mank” cinematographer Erik Messerschmidt has won the feature-film award from the American Society of Cinematographers at the 35th annual ASC Awards, which were handed out in a ceremony that streamed live from the ASC clubhouse in Hollywood on Sunday afternoon.
The award came in a category in which four of the five nominees are nominated for the Best Cinematography Oscar. The ASC nominees were “Mank,” “The Trial of the Chicago 7,” “Nomadland,” “News of the World” and “Cherry,” with the first four also landing Oscar nominations and “Cherry” replaced by “Judas and the Black Messiah” on the Oscar ballot.
Over the first 34 years, the ASC has honored the film that would go on to win the Oscar for Best Cinematography less than half the time, with the two groups matching 15 times and disagreeing 19 times. In recent years, though, the ASC has become a better Oscar predictor, with six out of 10 matches in the last decade.

This year Sofia Coppola could make Oscar history with her newest film “On The Rocks.” Unfortunately, the significance of these potential accomplishments is a reminder of the academy’s legacy of female underrepresentation. She directed and wrote the film, in which Rashida Jones stars opposite Bill Murray in a father-daughter caper. It’s a delicate and delightful film that touches on relationships, insecurity and the voices of women.
Coppola last directed Murray 17 years ago in the 2003 film “Lost in Translation.” It was famously shot in less than a month with a slim $4 million budget. It received critical acclaim and comfortably broke $100 million at the global box office. That movie not only earned an Oscar nomination for Best Picture, but Coppola became the third woman in history to score a Best Director nomination. She went on to win the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay.

“I love having a shot list, but I love being open to the variabilities of filmmaking on the day, which is one of the things I love so much about it,” Milne says. “Actors could have a completely different approach than your shot list that makes the film better, so I always like to break down with the director, like, ‘Whose scene is it?...

“On the Rocks” is the third film between Sofia Coppola and cinematographer Philippe Le Sourd, but it’s their first set in contemporary times. It’s also the director’s first one set in New York City. Starring Rashida Jones and Bill Murray, “On the Rocks” follows Laura (Jones), who suspects her husband Dean (Marlon Wayans) is cheating on her. When she mentions it to her father Felix (Murray), the wealthy playboy is more than happy to pitch in to tail Dean. Escapades ensue.
The film was shot in New York, presenting a ton of inspiration and options, but also difficulties. “Me, as a foreigner, even though I’ve been living in New York for the past 10 years, there’s always something about how you want to shoot New York,” Le Sourd tells Gold Derby at our Meet the Btl Experts: Film Cinematography panel (watch above). “It’s a beautiful...

The premiere of career-spanning restorations has been a time to again celebrate the cinema of Wong Kar-wai—but not without complications and conflicted feelings. Rather than give his tales of love, crime, and Hong Kong a 4K sheen and call it a day, Wong’s taken the opportunity to rejig his material in ways both minor and major. There’s a new, uniform style of closing credits to create “a reminder to our audience that these are the restored versions,” which most won’t notice. But in the case of Fallen Angels, he’s expanded the aspect ratio and made certain coloring changes that, as our Managing Editor discovered, are more than a little tinker. Predictably, people have strong feelings.
You can preview this new look and feel in a trailer for the 4K restoration. Having seen it myself, I can at least say the new widescreen transfer works: the images remain fluid,...

A well-modulated vision of the fight against encroaching malaise or mere trifle dressing itself up? Depends on the scene. But trifles have their place and auteurs should be allowed their fun, which On the Rocks deploys over 90 minutes kind enough not to feel like a waste of anyone’s talents or time.
An easy point to argue, perhaps, but Sofia Coppola’s greatest gift is making the precise look simple. Its many jaunts through New York City are tethered to Laura (Rashida Jones), a writer whose cushy life with husband Dean (Marlon Wayans) and two children gets shaken by suspicions of infidelity. Laura’s aloof father decides to turn her worries into a game of spying and occasional goose-chasing fueled by rakish boredom and, at one point, intimations of darker connections to Black Cube-like services that track Dean’s movements and credit card. Coppola’s throughline is neatly structured for...

In her new film “On the Rocks” — premiering at the New York Film Festival on its way to AppleTV+ in October — writer-director Sofia Coppola may well have crafted the quintessential Bill Murray role. But this is a father-daughter story, and the daughter is no less important; it helps, obviously, that both Coppola and co-lead Rashida Jones know a thing or two about larger-than-life dads, but it also matters that Jones is enough of a skilled actor and comic that she more than holds her own opposite the equally larger-than-life Murray.
Murray’s Felix is an old-school charmer, a deadpan wit, and a bon vivant, but he’s also an adoring father and grandfather, and he’s capable of accessing and acknowledging regret and loss. It would be a banquet for any actor, but the character has been so crafted for this particular performer that one suspects we will think of...

Back in 2003, Sofia Coppola teamed up with Bill Murray for Lost in Translation, one of the best films of the past 25 years. Now, in 2020, they’re getting back together for a movie with a potentially similar vibe in On the Rocks. Today, a Trailer finally debuted for this partnership between independent cinema powerhouse A24 and upstart streaming service Apple TV+. Coming this fall, it’s a possible Oscar contender, as well as, perhaps inadvertently, a love letter to what New York City was like before the coronavirus pandemic hit. Give the Trailer a look below, but first, a bit on what exactly Coppola’s latest is about… The flick is a dramedy focusing on an adventure between father and daughter. Here is the official description from A24: “A young New York mother faced with sudden doubts about her marriage teams up with her larger-than-life playboy father to tail her husband.

The world may be in chaos, but at least a new film directed by Sofia Coppola featuring Bill Murray and Rashida Jones galavanting around New York City is arriving this fall. On the Rocks, which marks the director’s first film since 2017’s The Beguiled remake, is also the first film produced under A24’s partnership with Apple. Ahead of an October release in theaters and on Apple TV+, the delightful first trailer and poster have now arrived.
“I wanted to do something that was a little bit lighter and more playful with a lot of heart and sincerity,” Coppola recently said of the film, which follows Murray and Jones as father and daughter, respectively, who go snooping around the city when Jones’ character suspects her husband (Marlon Wayans) of cheating.
The director also revealed Tootsie and The Thin Man are key inspirations for the “sophisticated comedy” of the film.
