Swedish actors Sofia Helin, Anja Lundqvist, Julia Dufvenius and Elin Klinga star as four middle-aged friends struggling with stifled sex lives in new comedy “Lust,” coming to HBO Max in March and premiering at the Berlinale Series Market. Balancing lighthearted comedy with a more serious focus on topics such as sexual harassment, marriage counselling, and personal identity, the show offers entertaining relief while spotlighting the under-examined world of womanhood over 40.
Developed from an idea that originated with the actors themselves, “Lust” stands out as one of few recent comedies wholly devoted to middle-aged lead female characters. Producer Sandra Harms says: “The actors came with the idea to make something on the topic of female sexuality over 40 because they noticed that when they passed 40, the characters they were offered to play were increasing lacking sexuality. They said there must be so many stories here that aren’t being told, which I thought was really interesting.

Since its launch in 2015, the Berlinale Series section has emerged as a kind of a boutique scripted TV fest set within a major film festival.
The Berlinale was famously the first A-list festival to embrace changing viewer habits and to officially incorporate television drama into its lineup — and this head-start is reflected in the growing stature of Berlinale Series.
Taking place over a concentrated three-day period (Feb. 14-16), Berlinale Series offers up seven world and international premieres from around 200 entries, giving each of them the red-carpet treatment at the Zoo Palast cinema.
Running parallel, the Berlinale Series Market — part of the European Film Market — offers up an online conference program, showcases and screenings. Its Berlinale Series Market Selects curates a selection of 14 series being traded on the market. Meanwhile, Co-Pro Series looks to pair 10 early-stage international series projects with co-producers and financiers through a series of pitches and meetings.

There are some performers who become synonymous with a particular genre, but at some point choose to head off in a different direction and try something new. One-time romcom queen Julia Roberts dipped a toe into drama with Erin Brockovich, Sandra Bullock did the same with The Blind Side and Gravity, and Steve Carell is now following suit with Foxcatcher. These endeavours are almost always compelling, exciting and successful – and with each casting announcement, we hope that we might hear about the next brave experimentation of a household name. This is not one of those times, however, as we discover that Sarah Jessica Parker will play an “uptight” single woman in the upcoming romantic comedy, All Roads Lead To Rome.
Maggie (Parker) is a conservative, closely-wound type, who embarks on an exciting journey across Italy with her former lover, Luca, in pursuit of her wayward and rebellious teenage daughter. Ambi Pictures...

An honorary mention went to British film ‘71, directed by Yann Demange, with the jury branding the soldier-behind-enemy-lines feature as “an extraordinarily well-made film that is both a brutal thriller and a nuanced, thoughtful work.”

It.s a terrible mark on society that gay marriage is barely squeaking through the door of accepted behavior, while gay parenting can.t even see the door yet. And even though cinema allows for all manners of storytelling to exist, not a lot of gay parenting stories are being told. Thankfully, popular TV shows like Modern Family and The New Normal are shining a spotlight on it, so it was only a matter of time before Hollywood got the hint. Taking a hint from Swedish filmmaker Ella Lemhagen, THRPatrik, Age 1.5 to American theaters, via a remake that they.ve signed screenwriter Allan Loeb to pen the script for. The Crown Jewels
Directed by Ella Lemhagen
Written by Ella Lemhagen and Carina Dahl
Sweden, 2011
Fragancia (Alicia Vikander) walks into her interrogation. As she sits in silence, a detective inquires, “Tell me what happened. You went up to Mr. Persson’s house at midnight to see Richard Persson. Why?”
Fragancia answers, “If I’m going to tell you, I want you to believe me.”
Her testimony also serves as the plot to Ella Lemhagen’s The Crown Jewels, and as Fragancia intimates, the story is fairly hard to believe.
The film starts off with the shooting of Richard Persson (Bill Skarsgård from Simon and the Oaks), Fragancia’s childhood acquaintance. Because she was at the scene of the crime, she’s arrested, and at her interrogation, she reveals her tempestuous childhood in order to vindicate herself of any wrongdoing.
When we are exposed to Fragancia’s childhood, the film becomes an examination of gender roles,...

I can't remember a time I went to the Seattle International Film Festival (Siff) press launch and looked over the list of films and saw so many I was interested in seeing. The claim to fame for over the years is to call it the largest and most-highly attended festival in the United States. This is a fact I've often taken issue with as I don't equate quantity with quality. Granted, there has been a large number of quality features to play the fest over the years, including Golden Space Needle (Best Film) winners such as Kiss of the Spider Woman (1985), My Life as a Dog (1987), Trainspotting (1996), Run Lola Run (1999), Whale Rider (2003) and even recent Best Director winner, Michel Hazanavicius's Oss 117: Nest of Spies in 2006. That said, looking over this year's crop of films I see a lot of films I will be doing my absolute best to see.

In recent years adoption stories have become a staple of made for cable movies. Director Ella Lemhagen’s Patrik, Age 1.5 is a departure from many of these formulaic TV movies. Besides being made for cinemas it focuses on the efforts of two married gay men in Sweden who decide to start a family. We first meet Goran (Gustaf Skarsgard) as he and his husband, Sven (Torkel Peterson), meet their new neighbors at a block party. Everything in this little neighborhood is full of bright colors similar to the suburbs of Tim Burton’s Edward Scissorhands. The residents are slightly surprised at the couple, but soon welcome them warmly. Later Goran looks longingly at the parents playing with their young children. They soon visit a adoption agency to find out how their application for a child is progressing. The men are told that no country wants to offer a child to a gay couple.

Following the outrage sparked by Canadian border guards’ decision to seize three gay-themed films (Shamim Sarif’s I Can’t See Straight, Adrian Shergold’s Clapham Junction and Ella Lemhagen’s Patrik, Age 1.5) headed to Ottawa’s gay film festival a couple of weeks ago, Jenn Ruddy reports at xtra.com that another gay-themed film was held up by Canadian authorities for more than a month. That’s Dinx, a short film directed by Edmonton-based filmmaker Trevor Anderson. Every year, it seems as if there’s only one small gay indie movie that breaks out of the pack and becomes the movie everyone talks about: Eating Out in 2004, Mysterious Skin in 2005, Another Gay Movie in 2006, Shelter in 2007, and Were the World Mine in 2008.
These are all pretty good movies, even if I didn’t always agree that they were the ones that most deserved to break out. (Last year, I liked Ciao more than Were the World Mine. And I liked Quinceañera more than either Shelter or Another Gay Movie.)
But I have a feeling that this year’s gay indie break-out movie will be Patrik, Age 1.5 – a Swedish film released last year in other countries, but only now being seen here in the U.S.
If it doesn’t break out, something’s truly not right in the world. It’s a flat-out wonderful movie.
