Intro: After the success of Lethal Weapon 3, it was a given there would be a fourth film in the franchise. But the next sequel proved to be surprisingly difficult to get into production. Until Warner Bros. realized they were heading into 1998 without a surefire summer hit on their hands. They gave Lethal Weapon 4 the greenlight and the movie was thrown together in a mad scramble. Twenty-five years later, it’s time to look back at the results of that rush job in this episode of Revisited.
Set-up: With a global box office haul of three hundred and twenty million dollars, Lethal Weapon 3 wasn’t just the biggest hit of the franchise. The 1992 release was considered to be the most profitable film in Warner Bros. history. So studio executives and producer Joel Silver immediately started looking forward to Lethal Weapon 4. This post contains spoilers for "Red Planet."
With the exception of "Total Recall" and "The Martian," films centered around our dusty neighboring planet have often fallen flat. Even among the duds, few have flopped as spectacularly as 2000's "Red Planet" starring Val Kilmer. With a production budget of 80 million, the unrealized blockbuster, co-produced by the Australian studio Village Roadshow Pictures and distributed by Warner Bros., brought in no more than 33 million from the worldwide box office, resulting in a significant loss.
A common theory behind the underperformance of "Red Planet" is that it lost out to its twin film "Mission to Mars" from director Brian De Palma that premiered eight months prior in March 2000. Neither film, however, was a financial success, and "Mission to Mars," with 106 million worldwide, barely made a profit on its own high 90 million budget. Audiences of "Mission to Mars" must have felt they'd seen enough of...

In between the disastrous Superman IV: The Quest for Peace in 1987 and Bryan Singer’s Superman Returns in 2006, there were countless attempts made at bringing the Man of Steel back to the big screen. The most famous was Tim Burton’s Superman Lives, which saw Warner Bros. funnel $40 million into pre-production before pulling the plug entirely, but that was just the tip of the iceberg.
Lethal Weapon 4 and The Devil’s Advocate writer Jonathan Lemkin penned a script titled Superman Reborn, Wolfgang Petersen was hired to direct Batman vs. Superman with Akiva Goldsman rewriting a draft by Seven‘s Andrew Kevin Walker that he called the darkest thing you’d ever seen, George Miller came famously close to getting Justice League: Mortal in front of cameras, and J.J. Abrams’ Superman: Flyby had Brett Ratner and then McG attached before that project also fell apart.

The last time we heard about G.I. Joe 3, Paramount had moved on to writer Aaron Berg after giving Evan Daugherty and Jonathan Lemkin a shot. That was pretty much it, and while there were rumors about a possible Transformers/Joe crossover, it looks like they have other plans. Warner Bros greenlit Lethal Weapon 4 late in the day - giving director Richard Donner just over six months to make the movie...
The closing chapter of the Lethal Weapon movie saga was a film that, tonally, was a long way away from the movie that started the series.
In the original Lethal Weapon back in 1987, the character of Martin Riggs - as played by Mel Gibson - was on the verge of suicide, working uneasily alongside Danny Glover's Roger Murtaugh. By the end of Lethal Weapon 4, as the song Why Can't We Be Friends played out, it was all happy families. With babies. Riggs had a wife and child, any hints of suicide were long gone, and the film feels a lot more like a comedy than an action thriller.
But then Lethal Weapon 4 was a film with very different expectations on it. The original Lethal Weapon was a surprise hit.

The chances of G.I. Joe 3 making a 2016 release seem slim, as Paramount hires a writer to start over on the project.
The current plan with G.I. Joe 3 is for Paramount to have the film in cinemas at some point in 2016, but to date, that's not been confirmed. Certainly the studio is going to need to get a crack on to meet such a deadline, as production does not seem close to starting. Furthermore, the studio has hired a new writer to take a crack at the script.
The writer concerned is Section 6's Aaron Berg, and he's basically going back to square one now. The earlier drafts of the G.I. Joe 3 screenplay, that had been written by Evan Daugherty and Jonathan Lemkin, are seemingly not being used.

Paramount desperately wants to make a third G.I. Joe film. Last we checked, they’d hired D.J. Caruso to direct and screenwriter Jonathan Lemkin was working on the script. After wowing Hollywood with his spec script Section 6, up-and-coming scribe Aaron Berg has been tapped by Paramount to pen a new script for G.I. Joe 3, which will revamp the action franchise with an eye toward setting up future installments.
DJ Caruso (Disturbia, Eagle Eye) is directing the threequel, which is expected to see the return of Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson as Roadblock. Outside of that, plot details are scarce, though it has been rumored that the film will introduce M.A.S.K. leader Matt Trakker and villainous twins Tomax and Xamot.
The first two installments, 2009’s The Rise of Cobra and 2013’s Retaliation, proved box office hits but drew middling reviews and certainly didn’t leave moviegoers thirsting for a follow-up. The studio hopes to change that with Caruso and Berg, the latter of whom is taking the reins from previous scribe Jonathan Lemkin (Shooter). If all goes according to plan,...

After successfully refocusing its G.I. Joe franchise around Dwayne Johnson’s Roadblock in 2013’s G.I. DJ Caruso recently became attached to direct the blockbuster threequel, and now we’re hearing rumors that point to a pair of fan favorites as the villains for the pic.

Paramount may have finally found a director for G.I. Joe 3. After G.I. Joe: Retaliation helmer Jon M. Chu jumped ship to make Jem and the Holograms for Blumhouse, the studio scrambled to find a replacement, with Casino Royale director Martin Campbell‘s name at one point ending up in the mix before he moved along. Now, though, Deadline is reporting that Disturbia director D.J. Caruso is in “early discussions” to take over the blockbuster franchise.
THR adds that, before a deal could be reached, Caruso would have to receive a stamp of approval from franchise star Dwayne Johnson, currently the only actor confirmed to return for the threequel. It makes sense that Ray Park’s Snake Eyes, Adrianne Palicki’s Lady Jaye, D.J. Cotrona’s Flint and Elodie Yung’s Jinx would all make appearances in G.I. Disturbia and Eagle Eye helmer D J Caruso is the current favourite to direct G.I. Joe 3
Paramount Pictures is pressing ahead with a third G.I. Joe movie, following the box office success of instalments one and two. But it must be hoping it can get a slightly better film out of the series this time around.
Part one was directed by Stephen Sommers, with the sequel helmed by Jon M Chu. And it was Chu who was initially its choice to return for a third movie as well. However, he's moved onto other projects, and so whilst Jonathan Lemkin has been working on a screenplay, G.I. Joe 3 has been missing a director.
Well, it might just have found one.

However, Chu decided to take on an adaptation of Jem and the Holograms, so now Paramount Pictures has been on the hunt for a new director. THR reports it's Disturbia, Eagle Eye and I Am Number Four director D.J. Caruso who is currently in talks to direct the film in the other major toy-based film franchise from the studio that also brought us Hasbro's Transformers to the big screen from producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura. Like it or not, Paramount Pictures is still moving forward with G.I. Joe 3. Personally, I think they should throw out what they’ve done with this franchise and start all over from scratch. This film franchise should have been so much better than what it is.
According to Schmoes Know (a site that successfully breaks scoops every now and then) the studio is looking to hire Martin Campbell to direct the movie. Campbell directed the awesome James Bond film Casino Royal and the absolutely awful DC Comics superhero movie Green Lantern.
No offer has been made yet, and as of right now no negotiations are taking place. But he’s the guy that the studio and producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura want to helm the feature. Campbell hasn’t made a movie since Green Lantern, but according to the report, the directing gig for G.I. Joe 3 is his if he wants it.

Although both movies drew highly negative reviews, G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra and G.I. Joe: Retaliation both pulled in over $300 million apiece for Paramount, making a third installment of the action-adventure franchise all but inevitable. We learned way back in July that Lethal Weapon 4 scribe Jonathan Lemkin had been tasked with scripting G.I. Joe 3, and that Jon M. Chu would not be returning to direct, but outside of that, it’s been radio silence on the threequel. Now, however, there are whispers around the interwebs that Paramount has singled out a replacement for Chu: Casino Royale director Martin Campbell.
According to Schmoes Know, which claims to have learned of the helmer’s possible involvement via the same shadowy but “reliable” source that (rightly) revealed that Michael B. Jordan would be in the Fantastic Four reboot, Campbell is the studio’s top choice and has just entered talks.

"Casino Royale" and "Green Lantern" director Martin Campbell is reportedly the top choice of both Paramount Pictures and producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura to take the helm of a third film in the "G.I. Joe" series according to Schmoes Know. Filming is aiming to begin in the first half of next year.
The site claims official negotiations have not yet begun, but the job is essentially Campbell's if he wants it. Jonathan Lemkin ("Devil's Advocate," "Lethal Weapon 4") is penning the script which will center on Dwayne Johnson's character Roadblock. Adrianne Palicki is also expected to reprise her role as Lady Jaye.
In more concrete news, Deadline reports that Disney has set "Get Smart" helmer Peter Segal to direct the film adaptation of the children's book "Goblins" by Ari Berk and acclaimed illustrator Brian Froud. Tom Astle & Matt Ember will script the adaptation, while Sagal and Michael Ewing will produce.

A source for Schmoes Know has heard that Paramount and producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura ("Transformers") want Martin Campbell to direct G.I. Joe 3. It's his if he wants it. Campbell hasn't directed a film since 2011's Green Lantern. That's understable as it is one of the worst comic book movies of all-time, despite what anyone tries to tell you. A shining example of how woefully bad a comic book movie can be if you don't respect or even understand the source material. However, Casino Royale is perhaps the best James Bond film of all time. It introduced us to Daniel Craig as 007, making him an overnight star, and its grittier take on the character reenergized the multi-decade franchise. How in the world did Martin Campbell directa gem like Casino Royale and a stinker like Green Lantern? It is quite the enigma. G.I. Joe 3 is currently being written by screenwriter Jonathan Lemkin,...

When asked by ScreenCrush if the "G.I. Joe" franchise was in trouble following the decent, if not quite exceptional $375 million worldwide take for "G.I. Joe: Retaliation" (only about $70 million more than its predecessor), producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura was candid: "I think the studio was very unsure about it. Look, you always wonder until they say yes, really," he said. Well, it looks like they're saying yes. With a 2016 date now eyed by Paramount, Variety reports that Jonathan Lemkin ("Shooter," "The Devil's Advocate") has been tasked to write the script. He presumably takes over for Evan Daughtery ("Snow White And The Huntsman") who was hired last fall, and we'd wager this screenplay will be the bait to snag a new director, as John Chu is not expected to return. That said, di Bonaventura is promising big, big things. "I honestly believe we have one of the best ideas we have ever come across for a sequel.

The current plan from Paramount is to have the third G.I. Joe movie in cinemas in 2016, and the studio is currently looking for a director to take over the chair vacated by Jon M Chu.
As that search goes on, it's been revealed that it's hired Jonathan Lemkin to pen the screenplay for the film. Lemkin, who has a list of credits including Shooter, Lethal Weapon 4 and The Devil's Advocate, will be writing a script that shifts the focus onto Dwayne Johnson's character, Roadblock.
Adrianne Palicki is also expected to return, as well as the bulk of the G.I. Joe: Retaliation cast. The film will start shooting in the first half of 2015.

Exodus: Gods and Kings: Christian Bale stars as the biblical prophet and leader Moses in Ridley Scott's upcoming Exodus: Gods and Kings. The first images suggest that Moses will be a man of action. Joel Edgerton, Sigourney Weaver, Ben Kingsley, John Turturro and Aaron Paul also star; the movie will be delivered to theaters on December 12. [EW.com] G.I. Joe 3: A few weeks back, Paramount announced that G.I. Joe 3 would be released in 2016, with precious few other details revealed. Now comes word that Hollywood veteran Jonathan Lemkin (Mark Wahlberg's Shooter) has been hired to write the script. The sequel will reportedly revolve around Roadblock, the character played by Dwayne Johnson, who is expected to reprise his role alongside Adrianne Palicki. Production is...

After G.I. Joe: Retaliation scored at the box office and earned less scorn than its predecessor G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra, a third installment was almost inevitable. And now that Skydance and Paramount have set G.I. Joe 3 for release in 2016, the studios are working on putting together a team for the tentpole. Today brings news that Lethal Weapon 4 scribe Jonathan Lemkin has been tapped to pen the screenplay.
Though most of Lemkin’s work has been on the small screen, with writing credits on series like Hill Street Blues and 21 Jump Street, the scribe previously penned The Devil’s Advocate and Shooter. Lemkin is also adapting survival drama The Longest Night from a GQ article of the same name for Frank Marshall to direct.

"Shrek 2" and "The Smurfs" scribes J. David Stem and David N. Weiss have been brought on to pen a sequel to Disney's 2007 musical fantasy tale "Enchanted". Anne Fletcher ("The Proposal," "The Guilt Trip") will helm this entry which had a previous draft written by Jessie Nelson.
Amy Adams, Patrick Dempsey, James Marsden, Idina Menzel and Susan Sarandon starred in the first film about an animated Disney princess who crosses over into the real world. It went on to make $340 million at the worldwide box office.
In other sequel script news, Jonathan Lemkin ("Shooter," "Devil's Advocate") has been hired to pen the third "G.I. Joe" film for Paramount Pictures. The new installment is expected to revolve around Dwayne Johnson’s character Roadblock.
The film is aiming to get into production in the second quarter of 2015 ahead of a Summer 2016 release. Jon Chu was originally slated to return as director, that's no longer the case.

The upcoming G.I. Joe 3 has been riding on rocky road ever since director Jon Chu decided to take a personal detour and go make Jem and The Holograms. Paramount, however, has no interest in hitting the pause button on one of their biggest franchises. Hence, the studio has just signed a deal with a new screenwriter to work on the sequel's script. Variety was the first to report the news, saying that the G.I. Joe 3 writing duties are being handed over to Jonathan Lemkin. We've previously heard that the studio was bringing in Snow White and the Huntsman scribe Evan Daugherty for the gig, but this new story makes it seem like Lemkin will be working with a clean slate - minus what the studio and toy companies already have in mind, of course. As we learned last week, the plan is to have Dwayne Johnson return as...

According to Variety, Paramount and Skydance have chosen Jonathan Lemkin to write G.I. Joe 3 for a 2016 release. He's already written The Longest Night (which Frank Marshall is set to direct) for the studio, and past credits include Shooter, Devil's Advocate and Lethal Weapon 4. Jon Chu was at one point attached to return to direct G.I. Joe 3, but that isn't happening as of right now. The site goes on to reveal that Dwayne Johnson and Adrianne Palicki are expected to return with Lorenzo di Bonaventura and David Ellison producing. The focus will be on The Rock this time though, with Roadblock taking on an even larger role in proceedings. Production will likely begin in the second quarter of 2015, and after G.I. Joe: Retaliation took $370 million at the worldwide box office, they're obviously keen on establishing this as a new franchise. What do you guys think?...

Frank Marshall is best known as a producer, having served as such on such beloved films as Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, Gremlins, The Goonies and Back to the Future. Though he's helmed a number of feature films, he is far less distinguished as a director. That's because he's responsible for Arachnophobia, Alive, Congo and most recently the 2011 sled-dog adventure Eight Below. But the lack of prestige pics hasn't deterred Paramount Pictures from picking Marshall to helm their upcoming shipwreck drama The Longest Night. THR reports Marshall has signed on to helm The Longest Night and will be working with a screenplay penned by Jonathan Lemkin, the screenwriter behind The Devil's Advocate and the Mark Wahlberg-fronted crime-drama Shooter. The new drama will be based on a 2008 GQ article by Sean Flynn. Here's the first paragraph of the piece that inspired the film: "One Easter Sunday, the Alaska...

Though Frank Marshall usually wears the producer hat, with credits that range from the Bourne films to Indiana Jones, he does step behind the camera every so often. Granted, with credits like Eight Below and Congo under his belt, he’s definitely had better luck when someone else is at the helm. Despite this, Marshall is intent on trying his hand at directing once more and this time, THR reports that he’s chosen to adapt Sean Flynn’s 2008 GQ article, The Longest Night.
Based on a true story, the film will follow a shipwreck that involved an Alaskan trawler sinking in “frigid, 6,000-foot-deep waters.” 47 people were on board and in an extraordinary rescue operation, the Coast Guard was able to save 42 lives.

Right now producer Frank Marshall has his hands full with Jurassic World, the latest sequel (which also seems to be sort of a reboot) in the Jurassic Park franchise launched by Steven Spielberg in 1993. Marshall has produced some of the biggest franchises of all time like Back to the Future and Raiders of the Lost Ark, and now he's looking to get back behind the camera as a director. The last time Marshall directed a film, it was Disney's Antarctic adventure Eight Below with the late Paul Walker in 2006, and before that, Congo in 1995. Now THR reports Marshall will direct a shipwreck drama called The Longest Night at Paramount. Lethal Weapon 4 writer Jonathan Lemkin scripted the film which is based on the article of the same name by Sean Flynn that appeared in a December 2008 issue of GQ, detailing a true-life Coast Guard rescue operation that unfolded on Easter...

Though he’s more usually found working as one of the best-known producers in the film industry, Frank Marshall has occasionally stepped behind the camera to make his own projects, directing the likes of Eight Below, Arachnaphobia and Alive. He’ll channel the spirit of that real-life latter outing for a new project, shipwreck tale The Longest Night.Paramount has bought the rights to Sean Flynn’s 2008 GQ article, which chronicles a Coast Guard rescue operation that braved seemingly impossible odds. An Alaskan trawler sank on Easter Sunday of that year, pitching its 47-strong crew into frigid waters 6,000 feet deep and more than 180 miles from the shore. With 15-foot swells hampering their job, the Coast Guard team still managed to rescue 42 of the souls on the stricken boat.Jonathan Lemkin, who has written such films as Lethal Weapon 4 and Shooter, adapted the script, which Marshall will shoot assuming he...

Few franchises have crashed and burned as spectacularly as the Superman films, which reached their nadir with 1987’s fourth installment, The Quest for Peace, which grossed barely a tenth the box office of Richard Donner’s classic origin story a decade earlier. Superman’S Diminishing Returns Superman (1978) $134M Superman II (1980) $108M Superman III (1983) $60M Superman IV: The Quest for Peace (1987) $15M With Tim Burton’s dark, gritty Batman demolishing box office records in 1989, Warner Bros. had no reason to think audiences would respond to the brighter, more colorful Man of Steel mythos – at least, not until 1992, when DC Comics’ bestselling “The Death and Return of Superman” cycle put The Daily Planet’s most famous reporter back on the front page. In the comics (later turned into a 2007 animated film, Superman: Doomsday), Superman is killed by a creature called Doomsday, before being resurrected after a three-month publishing hiatus which became a publicity magnet. Each and every month, we here at Sound On Sight dedicate the entire month to a specific theme. Sometimes we follow an event, an actor, a filmmaker and so on, as decided by our readers who vote on our monthly poll. February of 2013 was dedicated to actor Keanu Reeves. When the results came in, just about everyone was surprised that Keanu won over Steven Soderbergh, who finished a close second. But what has been even more surprising is that our Keanu Reeves marathon is without a doubt the most successful so far – driving in more traffic than the likes of Quentin Tarantino and 007.
Despite the fact that his acting has frequently been ridiculed as wooden, Keanu has always had a magical presence everywhere he appears, both on and offscreen. There is something to be said about a man who dropped out of high-school to follow his dreams of acting, and 27 years later,...

Next to The Matrix, Devil’s Advocate probably ranks in the top five Keanu Reeves acting roles of all time. Sure, you may not think of him as Clint Eastwood, but Reeves has appeared in 70 TV and Movie roles (including roles as a voice talent) – 50 of which were after Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventures. Although Reeves had his moment to shine in Speed, alongside Sandra Bullock, Devil’s Advocate, co-starring Al Pacino and Charlize Theron, thurst Reeves into the limelight so that he could eventually become Neo.

Consent to Kill, the first in a planned series of movies based on the thrillers of Vince Flynn, is headed screen wards with Antoine Fuqua directing.
We already had a chance to hear this news, but the big question now is – who will play CIA counter-terrorism agent Mitch Rapp?
The producers say: let it be Matthew Fox, Gerard Butler or Colin Farrell!
But let’s start from the beginning. We know Consent to kill is based on one of Vince Flynn’s novels about agent Rapp, and that there are several books about this character.
This is not the first of the 11 novels but seems like they think it’s the best way to start the whole thing. Or if you prefer the synopsis:

Gerard Butler, Colin Farrell and Matthew Fox are apparently the top candidates to star in "Consent to Kill" for CBS Films says Deadline.
An attempt to create another Jack Ryan/Jason Bourne-esque franchise, the film is based on the sixth novel in Vince Flynn's so far ten-book series which follows undercover CIA counter-terrorism agent Mitch Rapp.
In 'Consent', Rapp becomes the target of several assassins seeking to collect a $20 million bounty by a Saudi billionaire out for revenge for his son's apparent death at Rapp's hands. With Rapp’s wife and unborn child in danger and Government bureaucrats doing him more harm than help, the character becomes basically a man who goes out and kicks ass.
As of now "300" star Butler is the front-runner, "Lost" star Fox "has pursued the role aggressively", while Farrell is a personal favourite of CBS Films CEO Amy Baer.

Here's a quick round-up of items that don't necessarily warrant their own post, but count as trade news, all the same:
First up, news that Shia Labeouf has switched agencies (like anyone gives a shit) also revealed that he will "likely" start work on Transformers 3 in May. Nothing official, but the quick turn-around makes sense: It's not like the movie actually needs a script. In fact, Michael Bay could probably just splice together the explosions and effects from the first two movies, along with a few new adlibs from Labeouf, a couple of shots of Megan Fox's ass, and no one would know the goddamn difference.
Blah.
Elswhere, Variety reports that middling but competent director Antoine Fuqua (Training Day) will direct spy thriller Consent to Kill from a script penned by Jonathan Lemkin, which is adapted from the 2005 novel of the same name by Vince Flynn and centered on counterterrorism agent Mitch Rapp.

Mitch Rapp. He’s like James Bond, except with a sense of humor and knee injury. Or at least, that’s the impression one gets after reading the book’s plot. Variety has director Antoine Fuqua’s next movie for CBS Films being an adaptation of the novel “Consent to Kill”. Heck, even the title is all Bond-ish. Scheduled to be adapted for the screen by Jonathan Lemkin, and based on the novel of the same name by Vince Flynn, the book’s hero is one Mitch Rapp, a counter-terrorism hero battling International bad guys and domestic idiot politicians. Basically, it’s mostly based on a true story. Here’s the plot of the book from Amazon: Flynn continues to ratchet up the stakes for CIA assassin Mitch Rapp, who here battles a Saudi billionaire bent on revenge, an ex–East German Stasi spy and a deadly husband-and-wife team of assassins.

Antoine Fuqua will direct the spy thriller Consent to Kill for CBS Films with Lorenzo Dibonaventura and Nick Wechsler producing.
The script, penned by Jonathan Lemkin, is adapted from the 2005 novel of the same name by Vince Flynn, and centers on counter-terrorism agent Mitch Rapp.
The full synopsis hasn’t yet been unveiled, but in the novel, Rapp battles a vengeful Saudi billionaire, an ex-East German Stasi spy and a husband-and-wife team of assassins – all while dealing with a knee injury.
Looks like Fuqua’s solidifying himself as an action/thriller director, with credits that include recent titles like Training Day, Shooter, and the upcoming Brooklyn’s Finest, due for release on March 5.
