It’s a foolhardy plan to craft a film almost entirely around the onscreen chemistry between two movie stars and hope for the best. But when those stars are George Clooney and Julia Roberts, the combustive power of their pairing will go a long-ish way. Thinly scripted rom-com Ticket to Paradise puffs its way through 104 minutes mostly on the vapors of its lead actors gassing around together, albeit with an assist from spectacular Australian scenery standing in for Bali.
It’s the first time the actors have been paired on screen since dreary hostage drama Money Monster (2016), and it’s their first proper comedy together since they made those first two highly enjoyable Ocean’s movies with Steven Soderbergh at the helm back in the aughts. In fact, it’s the first time in a while either of them have done anything substantial...

"The art world caused this..." Dark Star has released an official trailer for Acute Misfortune, a fictional adaptation of Erik Jensen's award-winning biography of the tortured Australian artist Adam Cullen. This originally premiered at the Melbourne and Adelaide Film Festivals back in 2018, and also played at the Edinburgh Film Festival last year. The film is an examination of the connection between the biographer and his subject, following this particular story as it descends into a dependent and abusive relationship. Toby Wallace (who won the "Best Young Actor" award at the 2019 Venice Film Festival for Babyteeth) stars as biographer Erik Jensen, and Daniel Henshall co-stars as bipolar artist Adam Cullen (who passed away in 2012). It also stars Gillian Jones, Geneviève Lemon, and Max Cullen. This does indeed look like a very striking film, boasting some stunning images accenting a complicated story about two very different people. Here's the official trailer...

Leanne Tonkes, Martin Sacks and Victoria Garrett.
Martin Sacks enjoyed working with director Victoria Garrett in her debut feature Don’t Tell so much that he was keen to collaborate with her again.
The actor had been mulling the idea of a film about a father and son relationship which is tested by an unforeseen tragedy, so he pitched the concept to Garrett early last year.
She immediately sparked to the idea and is now developing the project with Sacks, screenwriter John Ridley and producer Leanne Tonkes.
Sacks will play the lead, the father of two teenage sons who live in a small country town. He’s an ordinary man on an ordinary day until he finds his life turned upside down by an indiscriminate tragedy.
Susie Porter, Nathaniel Dean and Daniela Farinacci will play supporting roles.
For the key role of the 15-year-old son the producers are keen to find a fresh face.

The Us version of Rake, which stars Greg Kinnear as brilliant, womanising and self-destructive criminal lawyer Keegan Deane, will screen on the rebranded Universal Channel on Foxtel.
Due to a holdback agreement with the ABC, the Us show cannot screen in Oz until after the third series of the Australian Rake airs on the public broadcaster. The remake premieres on Fox at 10 pm on Sunday January 19 with a strong lead-in, the Nfc Championship Game, and will then screen on Thursday nights at 9.
Peter Duncan, who co-created the original series with Richard Roxburgh and Charles Waterstreet, tells If the holdback agreement is not an issue, noting, .The ABC has been pretty generous. The Us series won.t finish screening until April. I am not sure when the new series will go to air in Australia but I believe it.s late February, so it.s not going to be a massive imposition.

It.s mid-December and Jane Campion is three days away from finishing post-production on the final episode of TV series Top of the Lake. We.re sitting in See-Saw Films. Paddington office and she.s looking at her phone reading a message from leading lady Elisabeth Moss. She.s pleased and Moss is ecstatic. ..Jane, you can have whatever you want... you can have my first-born child. I just watched the first two episodes: I.m completely blown away, I.m speechless...
It.s a ringing endorsement from the American actor whose casting nearly turned the New Zealand-set production on its head before a single frame was even shot. Moss plays Robin Griffin, a straight-talking detective called into investigate the mysterious disappearance of a pregnant twelve year-old in Top of the Lake, Campion.s six-part crime mystery involving lashings of murder, drugs and sex.

Chicago – Jane Campion and Julie Taymor are two of the most fascinating directors in modern cinema. They are unafraid to take major gambles, and their audacity has occasionally caused their projects to derail. But on a good day, they are capable of achieving artistic transcendence on a grand scale, as evidenced in Campion’s 1993 masterwork, “The Piano,” and Taymor’s 2002 gem, “Frida.”
Both pictures are bold in their depiction of sexuality and adamant in their refusal to portray their central female characters as victims. Though these women are damaged physically and emotionally by tragic occurrences, their lives are triumphant studies in survival against the odds. What’s particularly interesting is the way in which both women are drawn into unlikely romances with men whose less-than-photogenic features are overshadowed by their magnetism and fierce appreciation for beauty.
Blu-ray Rating: 4.0/5.0

Chicago – “Excuse me, I don’t feel anything,” announces the young, saucer-eyed woman to her meditation instructor. In fact, she feels many things, though meditative tranquility is not among them. Whenever she closes her eyes, a series of nightmarish images emerge from the depths of her heightened paranoia. At the center of her fears is a dark force in the form of her sister, lovingly nicknamed, “Sweetie.”
Though Kay (Karen Colson) is technically the heart and soul of this potent 1989 drama, her troubled, titular sibling, carrying the birth name of Dawn (Geneviève Lemon), soaks up attention like a sponge. Her unrestrained flamboyance and untreated mental illness threatens to consume everyone and everything that falls into her orbit. Kay’s irrational fear of trees seems to be symbolic of the family roots that run deep, entangling her limbs and stunting her growth.
