MaryAnn’s quick take… The X-Men series — the entire superhero genre — has never seen a film like Logan before: raw, rageful, tormented, human. Best of the series yet. I’m “biast” (pro): mostly love the X-Men movies; love Hugh Jackman and Patrick Stewart
I’m “biast” (con): nothing
(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)
With their extended metaphor about mutation as a stand-in for all the many reasons humans find to be bigoted toward other humans, the X-Men stories have always been perhaps the most grounded of the superhero universes, at least in their exploration of what it means to be “super” in a world where “super” is feared and hated, where “super” is ostracized. The mutants of X-Men are just ordinary people with unusual talents that, for the most part, they have to hide, and the movies in this series — of which we have had 10, counting this one,...

Musician Brandon “Chase” Wittenauer was “happy and thriving” in the artists’ community devastated by the tragic Oakland warehouse fire that claimed 36 lives Friday night, a friend says.
Wittenauer, 32, was an electronic musician who performed under the stage name Nex Iguolo and as part of the band Symbiotix.Fungi. His friend of 15 years, Amanda Fish, remembers him as “a sweet and sensitive artist embodied love and positivity.”
“He had found his place in life and the Oakland artist community and was happy and thriving. He saw art in everything around him,” Fish wrote in a statement to People. “He loved other people and people adored him.

Ready for some more behind-the-scenes photos from the Hawaii set of The Hunger Games: Catching Fire? Then read on because we have a gallery's worth of them!
EW.com posted the following photos, which they describe as follows:
As readers of the Hunger Games books know, the Arena that plays host to the 75th Hunger Games in Catching Fire has a body of water and a curious environmental climate which seems perfect for a tropical island. A photographer snapped some photos from the set, which feature a look at Jennifer Lawrence in her Quarter Quell outfit, Josh Hutcherson in the water, and a guy who appears to be Finnick (Sam Claflin) acting very Finnick-y indeed.

Let the (filming of the) Hunger Games begin! Or, well, continue! Lionsgate has released the final eleven Tributes cast in Catching Fire, and we are delighted by how many of them have worked primarily as stunt people. Based on their IMDb pages, new cast members like Jackson Spidell, Elena Sanchez and Bobby Jordan are predominately stunt actors, with extensive stunt credits to their name, on everything from The Expendables 2 to Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters, The Watch to 21 Jump Street. It makes us rub our hands together in anticipation of some truly excellent action sequences. Having a trident hurled through your chest, Anchorman-style, perhaps? Being savaged by mutant monkeys, anyone? We’re sure their acting will be similarly excellent; you don’t snag Phillip Seymour Hoffman and Amanda Plummer for your film just to blow it with a wooden tribute from District 5. This isn’t community theater here!

This is the Pure Movies review for The Mechanic, directed by Simon West and starring Jason Statham, Ben Foster, Tony Goldwyn, Donald Sutherland, Jeff Chase, Mini Anden, James Logan and Eddie J. Fernandez. This may well be a remake of the classic 1972 Michael Winner film that had the rather grander Us title of Killer of Killers, and starred mean machine Charles Bronson, but when The Mechanic has Jason Statham in the lead, it’s another Transporter film, whichever way you (cynically) look at it. Good news for Statham fans, and fans of shoot/blow-em-up kung-fu-lery because it has all those exciting and well-staged elements done in an erratic and on-the-clock fashion, leaving out important plot-developments along the way, as though they’re irrelevant because the Statham stunt choreography and physique will distract any nitpickers.

Chicago – It wouldn’t be a Jason Statham film if in it he was just fixing cars. In “The Mechanic,” his profession is fixing people. And by fixing, like “The Transporter” he’s again cracking skulls.
Rating: 2.5/5.0
But if you’re going to ask audiences to buy into a remake of the 1972 film by the same name with Charles Bronson originating Jason Statham’s role as Arthur Bishop, a film needs to make it less obvious that it’s just modernizing a 1970s flick for the purposes of making new money on a preexisting script.
While “The Mechanic” takes a page from all other hitman movies and employs every trick in the contract killer book we’ve already seen, the one redeeming difference is Statham’s inner dialogue and his cool, calculated demeanor. Sure, this Jason Statham is again a killer with no back story, but this time he’s also a master of restraint,...
