All hell broke loose in the fifth episode of “X-Men ’97,” “Remember It.” The shocking events are so traumatic, in fact, that fired showrunner Beau DeMayo momentarily broke his silence about the show to explain why it was important to reflect that “the X-Men have now been hit hard by the realities of an adult and unsafe world.”
It was against this unpredictable backdrop that The Newton Brothers Andy Grush and Taylor Stewart composed a score (out May 24) for the reboot that both honored and transcended the spirit of “X-Men: The Animated Series.”
“We started tackling the music in a sort of multi-faceted way at first [before seeing full episodes] because we didn’t really want to pretend that we knew exactly what the show should be because there are so many aspects,” Grush told IndieWire. “So, for us, it was about trying to give proper credit to various genres and ideas, and seeing...

Joe Biden wrapped up his Los Angeles visit today with brief remarks at a Culver City library to talk about the administration’s plans to cancel the student debt of more than 150,000 borrowers.
The original plan was blocked by the Supreme Court, but was revised so that borrowers who have been in the Saving on a Valuable Education plan, have been making at least 10 years of payments and had originally taken out $12,000 or less for college.
“The ability to repay has become so burdensome, a lot of people can’t even repay,” Biden said, adding that it would free up borrowers to buy homes and start businesses. The debt relief under the plan was originally to take place in July but was moved up.
Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass and Jessica Saint Paul also spoke at the event, held at Culver City Julian Dixon Library.

Update: President Joe Biden, speaking to attendees at tonight’s Los Angeles fundraiser, said that Donald Trump “is dragging us back to the past and not leading us to the future.”
“We stand with the truth and we are going to defeat him and his lies,” Biden said at the event, according to a pool report. The event was at the home of Haim Saban, but he was not there after testing positive for Covid, nor was the other main co-host, Casey Wasserman, who also tested positive.
In his remarks, which lasted about 15 minutes, Biden presented a contrast between himself and Trump, as donors have been calling for the campaign to sharpen its attacks on the president’s likely rival.
Biden also talked of the death of Alexei Navalny, blaming it on Vladimir Putin. He called it “outrageous” that Trump has not condemned the Russian leader.

Mere minutes after some of Hollywood’s biggest stars and executives issued a letter condemning the terror attacks on Israel and the taking of hundreds of hostages, The WGA East has publicly joined the Guild’s West Coast leadership in deciding to stay silent on the murderous siege of the Jewish state two weeks ago.
Admitting this “will strike some of you as inadequate,” Wgae president Lisa Takeuchi Cullen and others in the leadership said officially the Guild would be saying nothing on the matter – as a point of policy. At the same time they did note calling out “the atrocities in Israel committed by Hamas on October 7 and the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Gaza” on their personal social media feeds.

Exclusive: The Writers Guild of America hasn’t said anything publicly about the savage attack on Israel by terrorists on October 7, and a number of irate showrunners and others will be discussing that silence Friday.
Almost a week after dozens of high-profile WGA members put out an open letter reprimanding guild leadership for “when terrorists invaded Israel to murder, rape, and kidnap Jews… the Guild stayed silent,” guild members are getting together to say something more.
“The guild wants this to go away, but we aren’t going away — it is outrageous they’ve said nothing, absolutely outrageous,” one individual who plans on joining today’s virtual meeting told Deadline.
Chaired by American Soul creator Jonathan Prince, a Zoom meeting is scheduled for 12:30 p.m. Pt today to discuss why the WGA has been silent about Hamas’ onslaught against the Jewish state, which has left more than 1,400 dead and thousands injured.

4th Update, Oct 16: Casey Wasserman is the latest Hollywood heavyweight to speak out in support of Israel.

As hundreds of thousands of Israeli troops mass on the border with Gaza for a near-certain ground invasion in response to murderous terrorist attacks that started last week, the striking SAG-AFTRA has planted its flag in the dire situation.

“In the wake of the horrific terrorist attacks targeting Jews in Israel this past weekend, we must all do what we can to support the innocent people experiencing so much pain, violence, and uncertainty – particularly children,” declared Bob Iger tonight as the Walt Disney Company announced it is donating $2 million for humanitarian relief in Israel.
The Disney contribution comes as Hollywood leaders like Jeffrey Katzenberg, Warner Bros Discovery’s David Zaslav, and Haim Sabin, have spoken out in support of Israel after the single most murderous day against Jews since World War II. Paramount Global and agencies WME, CAA, and UTA have also offered their support publicly as well as internally.

“We thank you for your interest in covering and hope to be able to accommodate you at next year’s event. Thank you for your understanding.”

In a carriage battle about pay TV’s future, one of the original cable channels became an unexpected flashpoint.
Freeform, the Disney-owned cable channel that caters to younger women, was dropped from Spectrum channel lineups as part of Disney’s landmark deal with Charter Communications. It was no small decision, with Freeform in some 74 million homes at the end of last year, and with Charter’s nearly 15 million cable TV households no longer having access.
“When we looked across the portfolio to try to identify where the greatest value in this deal was to us, we definitely made some trade-offs,” Disney Entertainment co-chairman Dana Walden told The Hollywood Reporter after the Spectrum deal was announced. She noted that channels like Freeform already served as a pipeline of programming for streaming services like Hulu.

Pat Robertson, the influential religious broadcaster who launched the Christian Broadcasting Network and was a onetime presidential candidate, has died at 93. The news was confirmed via Cbn’s website.
“Pat Robertson, longtime TV host, religious broadcaster, educator, humanitarian, and one-time presidential candidate died at his home in Virginia Beach early Thursday morning. He was 93,” Cbn stated.
Along with Moral Majority founder Jerry Falwell, Robertson was a major force in the 1970s and ’80s in making evangelical conservatives a force in American politics, particularly within the Republican Party. He was a vocal proponent of shameful anti-lgbt policies and actions, some of which are once again roiling the nation as the 2024 presidential election approaches.

"Mighty Morphin Power Rangers" first hit the airwaves in 1993, and even though that original iteration of Rangers didn't last all that long, the series has remained remarkably enduring. 30 years later, the series has aired nearly 1,000 episodes through its various iterations, has inspired hundreds of issues of comics books, millions in toy sales, and is truly a globally recognized brand with huge staying power. Still, the franchise has never managed to fully crack the code in making the jump to movies.
Two films, the "Mighty Morphin Power Rangers" movie in 1995 and "Turbo: A Power Rangers Movie," did fine enough by '90s "kids movies based on a show" standards, which were ultimately more about selling toys and copies of the films on VHS.

Ynon Kreiz knew he was sitting on a “treasure trove” of IP when he took the reins of toymaker Mattel as CEO in 2018.
Mattel’s big vault of toy and game brands had the kind of built-in audience and multi-generational appeal that make for four-quadrant hits. But first he had to sort out major issues with Mattel’s struggling toy sales business before he moved into expansion by ramping up content production activity, as Kreiz explains on the latest episode of Variety podcast “Strictly Business.”
Four years later, Mattel is about to begin production on a Barbie movie directed by indie darling Greta Gerwig and starring Margot Robbie. The project is an ambitious prototype of Mattel’s effort to grow by adding a content dimension to its balance sheet. Exclusive: Saban Films is continuing to expand its international footprint, having recently inked a deal with distribution partners in Switzerland and Benelux. The L.A.-based company has signed with WW Entertainment in Benelux and Ascot Elite in Switzerland, which it will add to deals it already has in place in the UK and Ireland (Altitude), Germany and Austria (Splendid), France (Ace Entertainment), Spain (Key2Media), Scandinavia (Mis.Label) and Australia and New Zealand (Defiant Screen Entertainment).
“We are confident that we have found the perfect like-minded partners with WW Entertainment and Ascot Elite as we continue to build our global distribution capabilities,” Saban Films’ president Bill Bromiley says.
When the company, which is backed by Power Rangers billionaire Haim Saban, launched in Cannes nearly eight years ago, the aim was to build a distribution outfit that would focus on talent-driven, genre titles, releasing around 12 to 18 movies a year.

If Gov. Gavin Newsom is recalled next week, the entertainment industry will lose a valuable ally in Sacramento.
The industry’s top concern at the Capitol is the film and TV tax credit, which provides a 20-25% discount on eligible production spending in the state. In July, Newsom signed a two-year expansion of the program, bringing it to $420 million a year, and indicated he would support making that increase permanent.
With the exception of former San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer, the leading Republican candidates to replace Newsom all oppose the film incentive.
Radio host Larry Elder, who has led in the replacement polls since entering the race in July, has long been against giving tax credits to Hollywood. He sees the program as “hypocritical,” given Democrats’ support for higher corporate tax rates on other industries.
“I find it interesting that Hollywood pulls that lever for the Democratic Party, that raises taxes,...

As tensions continue to flare in the Middle East, Creative Community for Peace, an apolitical, non-profit entertainment industry organization, has come together to issue a collective call for “peace, balanced discourse and an end to inflammatory one-sided accounts” of the conflict between Israel and Palestinian Territories.
