Hong Sansoo’s A Traveler’s Needs, starring Isabelle Huppert, has sold North American distribution rights to New York’s Cinema Guild.
The film premiered at the Berlin International Film Festival earlier this year, winning the Silver Bear Grand Jury Prize.
A Traveler’s Needs will premiere in North America later in 2024, after which Cinema Guild will release in theaters. Today we feature an exclusive clip of veteran French filmmaker André Téchiné‘s latest oeuvre in My New Friends (aka Les Gens d’à côté) which will be unveiled in the Berlinale’s Panorama section. Formerly going by the title Dans le viseur or La révocation and filmed in late 2022, this drama stars Isabelle Huppert, Hafsia Herzi and Nahuel Perez Biscayart. Huppert plays the role of Lucie who is finds herself in a catch-22 type of situation where her moral linings clash with her ethical beliefs — it goes against her duties as a specialized technical and scientific police officer. Huppert and Herzi would actually re-team shortly after in Patricia Mazuy’s next directing gig, but here, as we see in the clip, we follow Herzi’s character confessing to Huppert’s Lucie that she is up to her neck with her better half not being able to walk in a straight...

No reasonably intelligent person imagines an artist’s statement about the horrors in Gaza would, in fact, end those horrors, but there are always limits to what one can take and hopes for what one could do. It might even be said that, as observers of the world and human behavior, filmmakers are especially inclined to recoil. When I interviewed Pedro Costa last month he spoke, unprompted, of a situation that’s only grown worse: “It’s very clear that we cannot stand images anymore. I can’t. I can’t. The images of the world for me [Exhales] I can’t. I turn my eyes, and I’m sure you do the same. It’s unbearable.” When I spoke with Anthony Dod Mantle a couple of weeks later it, again, emerged––vis-a-vis The Zone of Interest, whose own cinematographer alluded to it the next day. It’s difficult being a person in the world,...

Nightmare (Bowling) Alley: Mazuy Shocks with Disturbing Thriller
Every once in a while, a film comes along which conceptualizes brutality so shocking and vile it conjures a visceral reaction among the most desensitized of audience members. That it’s a moment contained in Saturn Bowling, the fifth film from singular French director Patricia Mazuy, heightens the shock value. Although more or less a familiar grisly serial killer thriller formatted with unexpected beats, Mazuy seems to be embarking on a new path of narrative fascination following her dark, masculine-centered drama Paul Sanchez is Back! "He keeps pursuing me. He won't stop." Dark Star Pictures has unveiled an official US trailer for a French horror thriller film titled Saturn Bowling, not to be confused with the alternate title Saturday Bowling. From French writer / director Patricia Mazuy, this serial killer thriller premiered at the Locarno and Busan Film Festivals last year, and opened in France already late last year. Police detective Guillaume decides to gift the family bowling alley to his estranged half-brother, Armand, following the death of their father. Their already contentious relationship is further strained by a series of murders that transform a tense drama into a twisty neo-noir as Guillaume's investigation brings him deeper into conflict with his brother. The brothers will have to face their own demons. Starring Arieh Worthalter, Achille Reggiani, Y-Lan Lucas, Leïla Muse, and Frédéric van den Driessche. This powerful horror looks like it gets quite scary and shocking.

Bringing some of the most adventurous filmmaking from around the world to Switzerland, the Locarno Film Festival is now running through next weekend. One of the directorial debuts on our radar is Romain de Saint-Blanquat’s Bitten (aka La Morsure), set in 1967 during Mardi Gras and backed by Films Boutique for international sales. The giallo thriller follows a seventeen-year-old at an all-girls Catholic high school. Convinced that she has only one night left before her death, she sneaks out with her friend Delphine to attend a costume party and live the night as if it was her last.
“La Morsure is a film that plays on changes of register and atmosphere, on rupture and opposition, in tune with the perception and chaotic trajectory of its heroine. I wanted to try to make its upheaval palpable, an inner storm that echoes the one blowing outside,” said the director. Ahead of tomorrow’s festival premiere,...

Exclusive: Dark Star Pictures has snapped up North American rights to the Stephen King documentary King on Screen, examining cinematic adaptations of the iconic author’s works, out of EFM. The film from actress-turned-director Daphné Baiwir, which bears King’s stamp of approval, will hit theaters in late summer, with a digital release to follow in the fall.
King on Screen offers audiences an intimate sit-down with directors who have adapted King’s work for the screen, looking at the movies and shows that have brought his body of work an entirely new life — both the ones that reached the top-tier echelons of pop culture history and those that fell by the wayside into obscurity. Among those sitting down for interviews in the film, which world premiered at Fantastic Fest last year, are Frank Darabont, Mick Garris (ABC’s The Stand), Mike Flanagan and director and special makeup effects titan Greg Nicotero, to name a few.
King is, of course, a master of literary horror and of the bestselling authors of all time who has seen more than 80 features made based on his work. Next heading from his pages to the screen is the Rob Savage-directed horror-thriller The Boogeyman from 20th Century Studios and 21 Laps, which hits theaters on June 2nd. Among the most recent titles of his to have been picked up for adaptation is 2021’s Billy Summers, about a hitman set to take one last major job before retiring, which has landed at Warner Bros, as we told you first. Ed Zwick and Marshall Herskovitz are penning the script, with J.J. Abrams’ Bad Robot and Leonardo DiCaprio’s Appian Way to produce.
Producers on King on Screen included Sebastien Cruz for Les Films de la Plage, Jean-Yves Roubin for Frakas Productions and Zoe Salmon for Mr Salmon Films, with the participation of Ocs.
“Daphné has done a spectacular job of showcasing the talented filmmakers who brought the work of Stephen King to life in moving images,” said Dark Star Pictures President, Michael Repsch. “As a lifelong King fan, I could not be more excited to bring this film to audiences across North America and have it as a part of the Dark Star family.”
Recent releases from the L.A.-based distributor Dark Star Pictures include the WWII epic Onoda: 10,000 Nights in the Jungle, Shinzô Katayama’s crime drama Missing, and the Tribeca-premiering drama Petit Mal. Other upcoming releases from the company include the Tim Roth vehicle Punch, Fantasia Grand Jury winner Megalomaniac, and the serial killer thriller Saturn Bowling from French auteur Patricia Mazuy.
Repsch negotiated the King on Screen deal for Dark Star Pictures, with Hugues Barbier, Justin Timms and Joe Yanick for Yellow Veil Pictures on behalf of the filmmakers.

Production has actually not yet begun but we’re looking at a production start this month or next which means we could see this play year-end fests and a late domestic release. Co-written by François Bégaudeau, Pierre Courrège and Mazuy, the screenplay looks at two women sharing the burden of having their husbands incarcerated and the bound that develops between them. For fans of lists ranking movies, days don’t get much better than today. Sight & Sound just released the results of its once-in-a-decade Greatest Films of All Time poll, and IndieWire has revealed our 25 Best Movies of 2022. And now, the world’s oldest film publication, Cahiers du Cinema, has joined the action as well.
The magazine famously launched the careers of French New Wave icons such as Jean-Luc Godard, but it has recently been plagued by a staff revolt that led to mass resignations. But that didn’t stop Cahiers du Cinema from releasing its top 10 films of 2022 (via World of Reel).
The list features plenty of familiar faces, including films from acclaimed international directors like Hong Sang-soo, Jerzy Skolimowski, and Ryusuke Hamaguchi. American directors are also well represented, with Paul Thomas Anderson, Jordan Peele, and Richard Linklater being recognized as well.

While the clock ticks down to another list unveiling today, Cahiers du cinéma‘s selection for the best of 2022 has arrived. Topping it off is Albert Serra’s Pacifiction, of which we’re also great fans and which Grasshopper will release next year. Because they didn’t get French releases until after us I’m having a bit of an existential crisis seeing Licorice Pizza and Wheel of Fortune and Fantasy land at 2 and 8, respectively.
While widespread favorites Nope and Eo rank high, there’s more interest the films that haven’t been making much of a splash stateside: Patricia Mazuy’s Bowling Saturne, Alain Guiraudie’s Nobody’s Hero, and Jonás Trueba’s Qui à part nous. And while the Netflix content mill didn’t give enough room for Richard Linklater’s Apollo 10½, I’ll choose to believe its solid #7 placement is a sign of longevity in years to come.

Displayed below are a few of the city’s most reliable theaters and links to screenings of their weekend offerings — films you’re not likely to see in a theater again anytime soon, and many of which are, also, on 35mm. If you have a chance to attend any of these, we’re of the mind that it’s time extremely well-spent.

Patricia Mazuy is back! And who is Patricia Mazuy, many English language cinephiles may ask? For the past thirty years, Mazuy has steadily built an impressive, if strikingly minimal, cinematic oeuvre while also dabbling in documentary and television. And yet, despite premiering her films at Cannes and working with a variety of cinematic notables, including Sandrine Bonnaire, Isabelle Huppert, Bruno Ganz and Laurent Lafitte, she remains surprisingly unknown outside of France, a matter which isn’t assisted by her features remaining undistributed in America. For the first time ever in the Us, Mazuy is being treated to a retrospective at Lincoln Center in New York, where all five of her features will screen, including her latest, the Said Ben Said produced Paul Sanchez is Back!…...
