A memorable 87th annual Academy Awards for Fox Searchlight saw Birdman claim best film, director and two other statuettes to tie with The Grand Budapest Hotel’s four-strong haul.
Boyhood, which entered the evening on six nominations and had been expected to push Birdman in several of the senior categories on Sunday night, won a sole best supporting actress for Patricia Arquette.
The film’s time in the Oscar ceremony spotlight will not be forgotten, however, as Arquette paid tribute to her “Boyhood family” and made an impassioned plea for wage equality that spread like wildfire across social media.
Eddie Redmayne from The Theory Of Everything prevailed in a tight best actor contest to deny Michael Keaton another success for Birdman. The popular victory had the British actor jumping with excitement on stage at the Dolby Theatre.

Show host Harris signs off with a chirpy, “Buenos noches!”
Sean Penn walks on. It’s time for the big one. Best film. Will it be Birdman or Boyhood? It’s Birdman! The movie ends the night tied with The Grand Budapest Hotel on four Oscars. Inarritu, referring to his pal Alfonso Cuaron who enjoyed success with Gravity at last year’s show, says, “Two Mexicans in a row. That’s suspicious, I guess.” Slightly more seriously, Agi also calls on his fellow Mexicans to help build a strong future for his beloved country. Wow, a good night for Birdman and a surprisingly barren one for Boyhood. Pirates indeed, Ethan Hawke, but glorious pirates.
And now Matthew McConaughey saunters on stage to announce best actress. Julianne Moore, five times a nominee at the Oscars is the favourite. Will she get it this time for Still Alice? Yes she’s got...

Exclusive Q&A: It arrived too late to factor in guild and critics awards, but the Clint Eastwood-directed American Sniper has established such a connection with American movie audiences that its dark horse chances of upsetting the Oscar status quo cannot be ignored. It passed Saving Private Ryan to become the highest domestic grossing war movie ever; it even shot past the U.S. gross of Bradley Cooper’s previous biggest hit, The Hangover, and trails only The Passion Of The Christ for biggest-ever R-rated domestic grosser. This, for a hard R film about the wartime exploits and horrors faced by the most dangerous sniper in U.S. military history, and the price paid by Chris Kyle, wife Taya, and his fellow soldiers tasked with door to door searches in Sadr City when it was the most dangerous place in Iraq.

Two films forgotten by the Academy, the animated adventure "The Lego Movie" and the Roger Ebert Documentary "Life Itself," triumphed at the recently concluded 2015 Producers Guild Awards.
"The Lego Movie" took home the Award for Outstanding Producer of Animated Theatrical Motion Pictures for producer Dan Lin while "Life Itself" won the Award for Outstanding Producer of Documentary Theatrical Motion Pictures for producers Garrett Basch, Steve James, and Zak Piper.
Meanwhile, Alejandro G. Iñárritu, John Lesher, and James W. Skotchdopole took the Oscar glitter away from Richard Linklater's "Boyhood" when "Birdman" was awarded the Darryl F. Zanuck Award for Outstanding Producer of Theatrical Motion Pictures.

Surpassing all targets, Warner Bros. Pictures’ and Village Roadshow Pictures’ multiple Oscar-nominated drama American Sniper smashed virtually every available record as it opened nationwide on the heels of its already record-breaking limited release. Easily topping the box office, the film took in an estimated $105.3 million for the four-day holiday weekend and has grossed $108.7 million to date and counting.
The announcement was made today by Dan Fellman, President of Domestic Distribution, Sue Kroll, President of Worldwide Marketing and International Distribution, and Greg Silverman, President, Creative Development and Worldwide Production, Warner Bros. Pictures
The film’s spectacular opening marks an all-time high over the course of director Clint Eastwood’s illustrious career. Among its many other milestones, American Sniper also broke records for a January weekend opening, including both three- and four-day weekends; the highest single day ever in January; the best four-day weekend for an R-rated film; and the biggest opening...

Good Morning Oscar fans! Today is nomination day!

Prior to the announcement, A.M.P.A.S. and the show’s producing team, Craig Zadan and Neil Meron, gave the press assembled in the Samuel Goldwyn Theatre a first look at the new Oscar promo featuring host Neil Patrick Harris, titled “Anything Can Happen,” and given what went down this morning, that’s certainly the case.
Let’s get right to the big shockers – No Lego Movie for Best Animated Feature or Life Itself in Best Documentary Feature.
Also missing among the presumed nominees were Ava DuVernay (Selma, directing), Clint Eastwood (American Sniper, directing), Jennifer Aniston (Cake, best actress), David Oyelowo (Selma, best actor), Jake Gyllenhaal (Nightcrawler, best actor), Ralph Fiennes (The Grand Budapest Hotel, best actor), Gillian Flynn (Gone Girl,...

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has just finished announcing their nominees for the 87th Annual Academy Awards, with Birdman and The Grand Budapest Hotel leading the way with nine nominations apiece, followed by The Imitation Game with eight. As usual, there were plenty of surprises to be found this morning, so let’s take a look at a few:
Selma ended up not making as grand a showing as many thought it would, nabbing only two nominations (Best Picture and Best Original Song). In a shocking turn of events, Gillian Flynn’s Gone Girl has been snubbed from Best Adapted Screenplay after being the leader throughout awards season, making it a wide-open category. Bennett Miller made a completely surprising appearance in Best Director for Foxcatcher, while Steve Carell managed to squeeze into the incredibly crowded Best Actor category. Bradley Cooper has also managed to sneak into Best Actor for American Sniper.

Movies made by women directors were snubbed by the Producers Guild of America when they announced the nominees today! Both "Selma" by Ava DuVernay and "Unbroken" by Angelina Jolie were left in the dust. I agree with not nominating the latter movie (sorry Ms. Jolie but "Unbroken" is too earnest for my taste) but "Selma" deserved a nod! It's a profound movie aided by DuVernay's skilled directing and David Oyelowo's fine performance as Martin Luther King Jr.
You know who I'm blaming for this? Paramount! The studio did not send screeners to Academy voters. Heck, they did not sent one to us, the Broadcast Film Critics Association. But after begging, they did send a link so I could watch "Selma" in time for our Critics' Choice Movie Award nominations.
"Selma" is a "late to the party" entry that is gaining momentum dashed by the PGA! If you remember, Clint Eastwood...

Awards season is in full swing. The 72nd Annual Golden Globe Awards are airing this Sunday, January 11th, and the nominations for the Academy Awards are coming in just under two weeks. In the meantime, the nominations for the Producers Guild Awards have been revealed. The PGA award nominees are a solid predecessor to the Oscars with the honor of winning being nearly the equivalent of winning Best Picture. In addition, the PGA awards usually give us a pretty good idea of what films will actually be nominated for Best Picture when the Oscar nominations roll around. So what films made the cut this year? Here's the list of film nominees for the 2014 PGA Awards (for television nominees, see the press release): Darryl F. The Producers Guild of America (PGA) added to the industry mix Monday morning with a list of 10 nominees to keep the awards season grist mill churning. "Gone Girl" popped up again, and it shouldn't be a surprise. It's one of the year's biggest hits. And speaking of hits, I had a hunch "Nightcrawler" would find a place after becoming such a well-liked, profitable success. There it sits. The question for both of these films is whether this on-going industry/guild love ends up translating to Oscar recognition. After the "Dragon Tattoo" rush a few years ago, I'm pretty much wait-and-see on stuff like this. Absent from the list was anything out of the Marvel Studios comic book factory, notable as both "Guardians of the Galaxy" and "Captain America: The Winter Soldier" were both on the top tier of box office earners in 2014. The former currently maintains the throne, though it...

The Producers Guild of America announced Monday its list of film and television nominees for its 2014 awards, and the list is as notable for its omissions as it is for its selections.
Among the films in the running for the top prize -- known formally as the Darryl F. Zanuck Award for Outstanding Producer of Theatrical Motion Pictures -- are "American Sniper," "Birdman," "Boyhood," "Foxcatcher," "Gone Girl," "The Grand Budapest Hotel," "The Imitation Game," "Nightcrawler," "The Theory of Everything," and "Whiplash."
But it's the films that were left off the list that had awards season prognosticators in a tizzy Monday. "Selma," "Unbroken," and "Into the Woods" all failed to score nominations, leading some to wonder if those movies' Oscar chances have dimmed significantly.
On the television front, "American Horror Story: Freak Show," "Fargo," "The Normal Heart," "The Roosevelts: An Intimate History," and "Sherlock" all scored nominations in the long-form television category.

Most of the movie biopics that figure prominently in awards season had their share of twists and turns, but none more than American Sniper, the film about Navy Seal Chris Kyle that Clint Eastwood directed for Warner Bros. Jason Hall, the writer since the film’s inception, explains how Sniper overcame more setbacks and tragedy than most films.
Deadline: You were an aspiring actor not that long ago. How did you become the sole writer of American Sniper?
Hall: I tried to be an actor, did TV parts in shows like Buffy The Vampire Slayer, played the bad guy or the MacGuffin bad guy with the half-baked mustache. I’d read these terrible movie scripts and couldn’t get auditions for them. I thought maybe I could write a terrible script for myself, but they wouldn’t even let me audition when I did that. It was a “dream come true” working with director Clint Eastwood on American Sniper, the story of Chris Kyle, the U.S. military’s most lethal sniper, said screenwriter Jason Hall. Hall adapted the script from Kyle’s autobiography after Kyle was killed by a fellow soldier in Texas on a gun range after returning from service.
Bradley Cooper stars as Kyle, and the film also features Siena Miller and Luke Grimes. Cooper and Eastwood produced the film with Andrew Lazar, Robert Lorenz and Peter Morgan. The film debuts in limited release on Christmas Day, and goes wide on Jan. 16. It is being distributed by Warner Bros.
Hall was speaking at Deadline’s recent Oscar showcase, The Contenders, with our awards columnist Pete Hammond.

It may be just a coincidence of timing, but scheduling tonight’s AFI Fest “Secret Sneak” of Clint Eastwood’s American Sniper on Veterans Day not only added a strong layer of emotion, but also comes off as a brilliant masterstroke in launching the film and an Oscar campaign. And the fact that Eastwood pulls off his finest and most impressive filmmaking achievement since his 2004 Best Picture Oscar winner Million Dollar Baby — he’s done it, at the age of 84, when most directors are long-retired or certainly not doing the best work of their career. And it’s not even the only film he’s directed this year: Jersey Boys came out in June. Remarkable. Eastwood appeared before the screening tonight to introduce it and send praise to his two stars. AFI President and CEO Bob Gazzale introduced Eastwood, the recipient of the AFI Life Acievement Award nearly 20 years ago suggesting that,...

Here’s our first look at Bradley Cooper as Navy Seal Chris Kyle, the undisputed most lethal sniper in U.S. history. Clint Eastwood directs American Sniper from a script by Jason Hall based on Kyle’s memoir, which spent 13 weeks at No. 1 on the New York Times best-seller list. Sienna Miller, Jake McDorman, Luke Grimes, Navid Negahban and Keir O’Donnell co-star in the film, which Steven Spielberg originally was set to direct as his follow-up to Lincoln. He dropped out in August 2013. It follows Kyle’s journey from rodeo cowboy to Seal Chief with the highest number of sniper kills in U.S. military history. Eastwood, Robert Lorenz, Andrew Lazar, Bradley Cooper and Peter Morgan are producers, with Tim Moore, Jason Hall, Sheroum Kim and Bruce Berman serving as executive producers. Warner Bros opens the film, presented in association with Village Roadshow, on Christmas Day.

Based on Dana’s memoir, “Jujitsu Rabbi and the Godless Blonde,” which was published in January, the show is an odd-couple story. Blum and Dana, who met at the Wall Street Journal while they worked there as entertainment reporters, are repped by Rwsg and Ryan Nord.

With original director Steven Spielberg out of the picture, "American Sniper" has set its sights on another high-profile helmer. Warner Bros. is in "tentative negotiations" with Clint Eastwood to direct the military drama, according to Deadline. "American Sniper" recounts the wartime deeds of Navy Seal marksman Chris Kyle, with Oscar nominee Bradley Cooper still signed on to play the lead role. Kyle is considered to be the most lethal sniper in U.S., having earned 160 confirmed kills during four tours of duty in Iraq. Jason Hall wrote the script, based on Kyle's autobiography. Cooper will also produce the film, along with Andrew Lazar and Peter Morgan....

I’ve learned that Warner Bros wants to fast-track production for the first quarter of 2014 and is in “tentative negotiations” with Clint Eastwood to direct. This is after Steven Spielberg this month took American Sniper out of his crosshairs, after declaring in May that he would next helm the film about decorated Navy Seal Chris Kyle, with Bradley Cooper playing the marksman. DreamWorks joined Warner Bros in a co-production when Spielberg said he would direct the script by Jason Hall. Both Spielberg and DreamWorks pulled out completely so there’s no extra expense to Warner Bros. American Sniper has Cooper not only starring but producing with Andrew Lazar and Peter Morgan. Eastwood is prepping to direct the movie version of Jersey Boys for Warner Bros. Production on that film will start at the end of August on the studio lot and is produced by Graham King and Rob Lorenz. (Nikki Finke is currently on vacation.

Bradley Cooper starrer American Sniper finds Steven Spielberg replacement in director Clint Eastwood. The film which suffered a loss of Spielberg as director, has found another solid director as, according to Twitch, Eastwood has stepped in to take the wheel of the film which tells of how Kyle from Texas, came to record the largest number of sniper kills ever for an American and has been praised for its candor in the use of first-person storytelling. Andrew Lazar, Peter Morgan and Cooper are producing the adaptation of Chris Kyle's autobiography scripted by Jason Dean Hall.

Leonardo DiCaprio could play Rasputin in a future film, Deadline reports.
Warner Bros has bought the movie pitch from American Sniper writer Jason Hall. It will now be developed for DiCaprio to play the famous Russian.
The production will focus on Rasputin, who became an advisor to the Russian Imperial family the Romanovs. He was embraced by Tsar Nicholas II and Alexandra as a healer for their only son, Tsarevich Alexei, who secretly suffered from hemophilia.
However, Rasputin's influence with the family in all matters grew to the point that rivals tried several times to kill him, finally succeeding in 1916.
The film will be produced by Langley Park's Kevin McCormick, DiCaprio's Appian Way partner Jennifer Davisson Killoran and Peter Morgan. Morgan is also a producer on American Sniper, which Steven Spielberg will direct with Bradley Cooper in the role of Navy Seal elite sniper Chris Kyle.

DiCaprio as Rasputin? He's ideal! It's being reported on Deadline that Warner Bros has acquired a script written by Jason Hall (Paranoia, American Sniper) for a movie about Rasputin, the Russian mystic who became an advisor to the Russian Imperial family, The Romanovs, before being brutally killed. Currently attached in the role of Rasputin is three-time Oscar nominee Leonardo DiCaprio. Apparently there was something about the ruthless Russian mystic which Hall uncovered and put into the script that intrigued DiCaprio enough to agree to the role. I just have a feeling about this that seems like a completely perfect fit. The project, titled just Rasputin, is being produced by Appian Way's Jennifer Davisson Killoran and Peter Morgan and Langley Park's Kevin McCormick. Hall has been a major name around town since his script American Sniper landed Spielberg as director; he's also working on adapting the David Finkel book Thank You For Your Service.

Steven Spielberg was planning to make Robopocalypse his next directorial effort, but he decided the script needed more work so he put it on the back burner. That left him with out a new project, until today.
Deadline is reporting that Spielberg has decided to make America Sniper his next film. Bradley Cooper is already attached to star as Chris Kyle.
The film will be based on the book American Sniper: The Autobiography of the Most Lethal Sniper in U.S. Military History.
Here’s rundown courtesy of Barnes & Noble:
From 1999 to 2009, U.S. Navy Seal Chris Kyle recorded the most career sniper kills in United States military history. Iraqi insurgents feared him so much they called him al-Shaitan (“the devil”) and placed a $20,000 bounty on his head. What happens when the sexiest man alive teams up with the world's great living director? Well, we're about to find out, because The Hollywood Reporter is reporting that Bradley Cooper and Steven Spielberg have signed on to lead and direct, respectively, the upcoming military biopic "American Sniper."
And it looks like the duo already has the Oscars planted dead-center in their crosshairs.
Based on the memoir "American Sniper: The Autobiography of the Most Lethal Sniper in U.S. Military History" by former U.S. Navy Seal Chris Kyle, "American Sniper" tells the story of how Kyle earned the highest kill count in American military history (160 confirmed kills out of 255 reported kills, for those interested in the grisly statistics). After serving four tours of duty during the Iraq War, Kyle was dubbed the Devil of Ramadi by enemy insurgents, who placed an $80,000 bounty on his head. I keep hoping that Spielberg will push forward with biopic “Gershwin" with Zachary Quinto in the lead role. (Maybe he's waiting for the "Star Trek" star to get older.) But Spielberg has chosen his post-"Lincoln" directing gig, and it's not the postponed "Robapocalypse." He's going to Warner Bros. to do “American Sniper” starring Bradley Cooper. Jason Hall's script, adapted from the book “American Sniper: The Autobiography of the Most Lethal Sniper in U.S. Military History” by Chris Kyle, Scott McEwan and Jim DeFelice. follows a Navy Seal's career and 150 confirmed kills. Spielberg, Cooper, Andrew Lazar, and Peter Morgan will produce with DreamWorks’ Kristie Macosko Krieger and Adam Somner overseeing at DreamWorks. Cooper’s production company, 22nd & Indiana Pictures, optioned the rights to the book a year ago. “Sniper” is a Warner Bros. and DreamWorks Studios co-production. THR story here.
