It seems April 2024 isn’t off to a good start for Princess Beatrice ever since Netflix’s Scoop premiered. The 35-year-old British royal is portrayed—very briefly—in the film about her father, Prince Andrew’s 2019 Newsnight interview regarding his friendship with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. According to an expert, Beatrice is likely “annoyed and upset” she’s depicted in the film.
Beatrice will be ‘dreading’ the ‘difficult time ahead’ amid her portrayal in ‘Scoop’
Scoop debuted on April 5, 2024. With it came a depiction of Beatrice as her father, Andrew, played by Rufus Sewell, and his team negotiated with BBC Newsnight’s Sam McAlister (Billie Piper) and Emily Maitlis (Gillian Anderson).
The interview aired in November 2019. It resulted in Andrew losing his Hrh [His Royal Highness] status and being removed from the list of working royals.
Charity Wakefield plays Beatrice in Scoop, who’s seen in one scene attending a Buckingham Palace meeting.

Jeffrey Epstein is back in the news with the release of the sex trafficker’s private files earlier this year, so it’s good timing that Netflix is releasing its thriller on the exposé. Unfortunately, the would-be prestige drama Scoop feels like all bark and no bite, lacking the insight or audacity to make it a meaningful entry to the genre.
Scoop tells the story of the BBC journalists who obtained the Newsnight interview with Prince Andrew about his relationship with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. Although this story is undeniably interesting, the film’s fundamental flaw is treating it as a nail-biting thriller when the situation’s results are so well-known. Had the movie taken a more satirical, perhaps even farcical, approach, it would have been far more compelling.
The film also struggles to straddle the line between technical and accessible. At some points, it seems like the filmmakers...

Exclusive: The production outfit behind Netflix’s Prince Andrew feature Scoop is working with Sarah Lancashire on an “ambitious, contemporary returning series” that Lancashire will star in.
Lighthouse Film & Television is teaming with Lancashire’s recently launched Via Pictures on the show, we can reveal, which Lighthouse co-founder Radford Neville teased is a “research heavy project inspired by real characters.”
Conversations with networks have already begun and Lancashire will star, contradicting reports that emerged earlier this week that she has retired from acting.
Lancashire launched Via Pictures with husband and former BBC and Banijay UK boss Peter Salmon last year upon the conclusion of Happy Valley, one of the corporation’s biggest dramas of the past decade.
“When we set up Lighthouse in 2019 we talked to Sarah about developing something specifically for her,” added Neville. “In the interim she has set up Via and towards the end of last year...

The trailer for the movie about Prince Andrew’s Jeffrey Epstein interview is finally here. Netflix dropped a teaser trailer for Scoop, which offers a behind-the-scenes look at how the 2019 Newsnight interview happened. More on the film ahead. Plus, when Scoop premieres.
The ‘Scoop’ trailer shows Gillian Anderson’s Emily Maitlis sitting down with Rufus Sewell’s Andrew
On Feb. 12, 2024, Netflix released a short clip of Scoop in the form of a teaser trailer (via YouTube). The 70-second video started with Gillian Anderson as Emily Maitlis, the journalist who interviewed the Duke of York for BBC’s Newsnight in November 2019.
While footage leading up to the interview flashed across the screen, a voice could be heard saying: “This is the story. The only story. I want it for us. Thursday, 2 p.m., the palace. Two chairs in the middle of the floor, six feet apart.”

Elly Conway (Bryce Dallas Howard) and Aidan (Sam Rockwell) in ‘Argylle’ (Photo Credit: Peter Mountain / Universal Pictures; Apple Original Films; and Marv)
Argylle isn’t likely to gain the fame and following of other fictional spies like James Bond, Jack Ryan, and Jason Bourne. The slick, charming spy with a weird box haircut is introduced in director Matthew Vaughn’s 2024 action comedy as the creation of reclusive author Elly Conway (Bryce Dallas Howard).
The PG-13 film begins with the titular character (Henry Cavill) trapped in a room with multiple assassins. He quickly uses his skills and a smoke screen to escape and gives chase to a double agent (Dua Lipa) trying to flee the country.
Cut to Conway who’s doing a celebrity author reading to help publicize her latest novel. To her fans, Elly seems to have it all. Her writing’s so descriptive and realistic that fans even...

Stars of Matthew Vaughn’s new spy thriller Argylle do their best to briefly describe the film in Universal Pictures’ latest minute-long featurette. Adjectives tossed out include crazy, mindblowing, smart, and sexy, with Bryan Cranston advising that it’s not always possible to understand the madness of Matthew Vaughn – you just have to go with it.
In addition to Emmy winner Bryan Cranston (Breaking Bad), the ensemble includes Bryce Dallas Howard (the Jurassic World films), Oscar winner Sam Rockwell, Henry Cavill (The Witcher), John Cena (Peacemaker), Oscar winner Ariana DeBose (West Side Story), and Grammy winner Dua Lipa (Barbie). Haley Bennett stars as Roxanne and Peter Dinklage as Cyrano in Joe Wright’s Cyrano, a Metro Goldwyn Mayer Pictures film. Photo credit: Peter Mountain © 2021 Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Pictures Inc. All Rights Reserved.
Peter Dinklage playing Cyrano in a new film adaptation of the beloved story sounded like an excellent idea. Being directed by Joe Wright, who handled costume dramas such as Pride And Prejudice so well, made the prospect sound even better. But a few minutes into the new Cyrano, it became clear it had a big problem: it’s a musical.
And not a very good musical at that. While there are those who are happy see everything adapted into a musical, this reviewer is firmly in the opposite camp. Not everything should be a musical, and the new Cyrano is exhibit one in that case.

Cyrano, the greatest love story ever told is in select cities January 28th and everywhere February 11th. Experience the vivid world of director Joe Wright’s Cyrano with Peter Dinklage, Haley Bennett and Kelvin Harrison Jr. in this new featurette:
Award-winning director Joe Wright envelops moviegoers in a symphony of emotions with music, romance, and beauty in Cyrano, re-imagining the timeless tale of a heartbreaking love triangle. A man ahead of his time, Cyrano de Bergerac (played by Peter Dinklage) dazzles whether with ferocious wordplay at a verbal joust or with brilliant swordplay in a duel. But, convinced that his appearance renders him unworthy of the love of a devoted friend, the luminous Roxanne (Haley Bennett), Cyrano has yet to declare his feelings for her — and Roxanne has fallen in love, at first sight, with Christian (Kelvin Harrison Jr.).

Pandemic lock-down was such a universal experience that it was inevitable there would be a film about it. James McAvoy and Sharon Horgan star in Together, award-winning director Stephen Daldry’s take on that. The problem is that the unnamed couple McAvoy and Horgan play are notably irritating people who hate each other and complain vehemently to us, the audience, about their mutual dislike. Director Stephen Frears’ funny, charming Victoria And Abdul was inspired by a real event late in the life of Queen Victoria, when the aging British monarch had her mood brighten by the arrival of a visitor from India, much to the dismay of her advisers and her son, the crown prince. Judi Dench gives a brave and bitingly funny performance as the elderly Queen Victoria, which feels a bit like a kind of sequel to her role as the same queen earlier in life in 1997’s Mrs. Brown. Frears’ handsome historical comedy/drama has a script written by Lee Hall, who penned Billy Elliot, and is based on journalist Shrabani Basu’s “Victoria & Abdul: The True Story of the Queen’s Closest Confidant.

If you’re like me, there aren’t many movies you’re looking forward to as much as Annihilation. The next offering by Ex Machina‘s Alex Garland reteams the writer/director with Oscar Isaac, and also stars Natalie Portman, Jennifer Jason Leigh, and Tessa Thompson.
While Ex Machina disappointed me a bit with its ending, it was still a wild ride that was incredibly entertaining and pulled some brilliant performances out of its cast.
Annihilation looks just as wild, and it’s the sort of movie that makes you glad you get a trailer, because it would be hard to describe just what’s going on here. The film is based on Jeff VanderMeer’s best-selling Southern Reach Trilogy, and involves a variety of scientists and researchers apparently visiting a world where the laws of nature simply don’t gel with our understanding of what’s possible.

Easily one of the most anticipated titles of next year is “Annihilation,” which marks the return of “Ex Machina” writer-director Alex Garland. Entertainment Weekly has debuted the first official image from the science-fiction drama, which finds Natalie Portman’s character facing down the mouth of a very large mutated alligator. Portman plays a scientist named Lana, who Garlands explains “finds a very strange, dream-like, surrealist landscape, and goes deeper and deeper into that world, and also into that mindset.”

Up until a few years ago, Queen Victoria, Queen of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland and Empress of India, was the longest reigning monarch. That is until Queen Elizabeth II, her great-great granddaughter surpassed her in September 2015. Elizabeth has been Queen since 1952.
With a reign of 63 years, seven months and two days, Victoria was the longest-reigning British monarch and the longest-reigning queen regnant in world history.
Focus Features has released the first poster and trailer for the upcoming Victoria & Abdul, from director Stephen Frears (The Queen,” “Philomena,” “Mrs. Henderson Presents”). The cast features Judi Dench, Ali Fazal, Adeel Akhtar, Simon Callow, Eddie Izzard, Ruth McCabe, Tim Pigott-Smith, Julian Wadham, Olivia Williams, Fenella Woolgar and Michael Gambon.
Many fans of the 1997’s Mrs. Brown wanted more of the story of a bereaved Queen Victoria (Judi Dench) and her relationship with a Scottish servant, John Brown (Billy Connolly), and the subsequent uproar it provoked.

“The Martian” has been called “‘Cast Away’ on Mars” in various corners of the Internet, but it’s actually quite a different movie than the 2000 Tom Hanks film. Yes, Matt Damon’s astronaut is stranded in a place where he has little hope of surviving, but he approaches the extremely treacherous situation very differently from Hanks’ character. Damon’s character remains rather humorous, upbeat and optimistic in his time persevering to survive on the Red Planet. That optimism is largely what spoke to “The Martian” screenwriter Drew Goddard when he read the novel by Andy Weir that’s the basis for the film, which opened in theaters yesterday. Goddard (whose past credits include “The Cabin in the Woods,” “Lost” and “Buffy”) spoke to HitFix about the challenges of adapting a book with a lot of technical language, why he considers “The Martian” a “religious movie,” and which book moment that...

Disney‘s Into the Woods was as surprising as it was entertaining. Viewers probably should have expected something that was going to work from Disney, but translations from the stage are tricky. Worse, the idea may sound rather odd for the uninitiated. We may have heard a few of these actors do some singing, but this one is loaded with names we aren’t familiar with when it comes to their vocal ability. Plus, going in, it’s difficult to nail down exactly what this thing is about.
Then you watch it, and even if you had high expectations, it’s hard not to be blown away by the fun and magic that comes your way.
Anna Kendrick, Emily Blunt, and especially James Corden, steal the movie, which is a pretty impressive job considering the rest of the cast.

Johnny Depp stars as Will Caster in the intriguing new trailer for Alcon Entertainment’s sci-fi thriller Transcendence.
It marks the feature film directorial debut of Oscar-winning cinematographer Wally Pfister (Inception, the Dark Knight movies). Pfister directed the movie from a screenplay by Jack Paglen.
In theaters April 18, 2014, Depp plays Dr. Will Caster - the foremost researcher in the field of Artificial Intelligence, working to create a sentient machine that combines the collective intelligence of everything ever known with the full range of human emotions.
His highly controversial experiments have made him famous, but they have also made him the prime target of anti-technology extremists who will do whatever it takes to stop him.
However, in their attempt to destroy Will, they inadvertently become the catalyst for him to succeed—to be a participant in his own transcendence. For his wife Evelyn (Rebecca Hall) and best friend Max Waters (Paul Bettany), both fellow researchers,...

Dark Shadows: Michelle Pfeiffer in the old Joan Bennett role, Elizabeth Collins Stoddard Unlike Joss Whedon / Chris Evans / Chris Hemsworth’s The Avengers, Tim Burton / Johnny Depp’s Dark Shadows isn’t about to break any box-office records. The latest Burton / Depp collaboration — also featuring Michelle Pfeiffer and Chloë Grace Moretz — opened with a disappointing $9.72m (including $550k from Thursday midnight screenings) at 3,755 North American locations. Dark Shadows is expected to finish its first domestic weekend with $27-28m — or less than the amount ($29.1m) The Avengers earned on its second Friday out. [See also The Avengers Movie to Break Another box-office Record?] Dark Shadows distributor Warner Bros. had been expecting at the very least a $35m opening weekend. Burton and Depp’s previous collaboration, Alice in Wonderland, debuted with $116m in March 2010. In fact, even Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, which scored $9.3m on opening weekend in December 2007, sold more tickets than Dark Shadows. Making...

Johnny Depp vampire: Dark Shadows The Avengers to break another box-office record? As per early, rough box-office estimates, the Joss Whedon-directed superhero movie is expected to gross $28-29m at 4,349 theaters in North America on Friday and a whopping $100m by Sunday evening — up from $80-90m predicted earlier today. Meanwhile, Tim Burton / Johnny Depp’s Dark Shadows opened with a disappointing $10.5m at 3,755 locations. Dark Shadows is expected to finish its first weekend with $28m — the amount The Avengers is expected to earn on its second Friday out. The above figures were found at Deadline.com, which adds that Dark Shadows distributor Warner Bros. was expecting at the very least a $35m opening weekend. Burton and Depp’s previous collaboration, Alice in Wonderland, opened with $116m in March 2010. Making matters worse for Dark Shadows: its budget is pegged at $150-175m, not including marketing / distribution expenses. Unless...

Although much ado has been made over "Dark Shadows" star Johnny Depp's portrayal of reluctant vampire Barnabas Collins, the Tim Burton-directed, 1970s-set vampire dramedy also features a cast of equally quirky characters and talented actors like Michelle Pfeiffer, Chloë Moretz and newcomer Bella Heathcote.

And we thought we won't be able to see this picture much less the movie. Troubled by rumored escalating costs ($250 million and counting supposedly), Walt Disney Pictures had second thoughts about making the Jerry Bruckheimer-produced, Gore Verbinski-directed, Johnny Depp-starred "The Lone Ranger." And why not? The House of Mouse is also fighting over-budget rumors, also $250 million and counting, for the upcoming "John Carter."
But now, we received from Disney this newly released first look for "The Lone Ranger!" Depp plays Tonto, a spirit warrior on a personal quest; Armie Hammer stars as John Reid, a lawman who has become a masked avenger. Together, the two fights for truth, justice, and the cowboys and indians way.
Don't you just love how Depp is channeling Pocahontas? Ha!
"The Lone Ranger" will hi-ho silver away to theaters in May 2013.

Here’s an image that will stick with you for a bit. It’s Tonto (Johnny Depp, The Rum Diary) and The Lone Ranger, John Reid (Armie Hammer, Mirror Mirror) in what is the first image released of Disney and Bruckheimer Films’ The Lone Ranger to be directed by Gore Verbinski. Yes, the team that brought you Pirates of the Caribbean. The description of the lead characters are as follows: Tonto is a spirit warrior on a personal quest, joins forces in a fight for justice with John Reid, a lawman who has become a masked avenger.
If there’s some hesitation as to the angle this remake is going to go, the first Pirates was a lot of fun. Also John Carter is a good film, made especially for those aware of the romantic science fiction and space exploration when the stories were originally conceived by Edgar Rice Burroughs.

Currently with $10.63 million at the North American box office, The Rum Diary has the dubious distinction of possibly ending up as the biggest Johnny Depp flop in "very wide" release — movies screened at more than 2,000 locations. Among 38 Johnny Depp titles found on Box Office Mojo's inflation-adjusted list, The Rum Diary ranks no. 31. With luck, The Rum Diary will ultimately settle somewhere between What's Eating Gilbert Grape?, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, The Astronaut's Wife, and Cry-Baby. With inflation-adjusted box-office totals ranging between $15m-$19m, those are all releases from the 1990s — before Depp became a worldwide box-office superstar as a result of Gore Verbinski's international blockbuster Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl in 2003. In case The Rum Diary manages to outgross The Astronaut's Wife, it'll be Depp's second-lowest-grossing movie in "very wide" release. In order to achieve that feat, The Rum Diary will have...

To celebrate the release of Johnny Depp’s new movie, The Rum Diary, in cinemas November 11th, we have teamed up with Entertainment Film to offer you the chance to win tickets to the Premiere in London on Thursday 3rd November.
The Rum Diary is directed by Bruce Robinson and also stars, Aaron Eckhart, Amber Heard, Michael Rispoli, Richard Jenkins, Giovanni Ribisi and Marshall Bell.
Based on the debut novel by Hunter S. Thompson which initiated his long, distinguished and brilliantly unpredictable career, The Rum Diary tells the increasingly unhinged story of itinerant journalist Paul Kemp (Depp). Tiring of the noise and madness of New York and the crushing conventions of late Eisenhower-era America, Kemp travels to the pristine island of Puerto Rico to write for a local newspaper, The San Juan Star, run by downtrodden editor Lotterman (Jenkins).

Chicago – Johnny Depp has a Hunter S. Thompson obsession, that is career apparent. After playing the journalist’s alter-ego Raoul Duke in “Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas,” Depp gives a turn as Hunter’s younger self in a film based on Thompson’s 1998 novel, “The Rum Diary.”
Rating: 3.0/5.0
Depp is game for the role, he must relish any turn in the gonzo journalist’s shoes. He is virtually in every frame and carries the movie grandly on his back, but the story surrounding him is muddled, disconnected and soft. There are some grand flourishes, but ultimately it comes down to defeating a hotel developer, which on the villain scale doesn’t exactly inspire an overwhelming opposing force.
The year is 1960 and a writer named Kemp (Depp) arrives in San Juan, Puerto Rico, because he is a failed novelist and needs a job. The only rag on the island is The San Juan Star,...

Johnny Depp, Geoffrey Rush in Rob Marshall's Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides The Lone Ranger is still not a go, but Deadline.com reports that producer Jerry Bruckheimer and director Gore Verbinski have come up with a more modest budget "in the $215m range" for the Western to star Johnny Depp and The Social Network's Armie Hammer. That's down from the project's original $275m budget, which Disney executives had deemed much too costly following the highly disappointing box-office take of Universal's Cowboys & Aliens. Directed by Jon Favreau, and starring Harrison Ford, Daniel Craig, and Olivia Wilde, Cowboys & Aliens has collected $94.17m at the North American box office, in addition to a paltry $35.5m internationally. Made for a reported $163m — though some sources claim this mix of the Western and the sci-fi genres cost as much as $200m — Cowboys & Aliens' worldwide total currently stands at $129.67m. Studios...

Few releases have offered less interest pre-viewing than Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides. Not only was At World's End nearly indescribable in its awfulness, but the move to Rob Marshall as director didn't inspire a lot of confidence. Something about being a choreographer and/or directing the passable Chicago, and the abysmal Nine apparently translates into "obvious choice for pirate movie director," but I certainly don't know what it is.
But, at the very last minute, I reevaluated my thinking. A fresh viewpoint might be what the franchise needs, and I didn't expect Gore Verbinski to put together anything worth a damn either. The second and third movies might have been mostly useless, but the first one was great. Maybe Marshall's first one had some hope. Plus, I rather like Ian McShane. As you might expect, it was all just wishful thinking.

While "Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides" opened to $90.1 million this weekend, showing the franchise has perhaps sprung a leak domestically in its fourth installment, the new film set a five-day international opening record of $256.3 million.
Disney is reportedly convinced this latest "Pirates" could pass the $654 million international total for 2007's "At World's End." The takeaway from all this box-office chatter is we likely haven't seen the last of the swashbuckling series.
In fact, development on a fifth film is already under way, with a draft of a script from Terry Rossio, who also penned "On Stranger Tides," in the hands of Disney execs and both director...

To truly understand the global success of the "Pirates of the Caribbean" franchise — because who, honestly, can wrap his head around a figure as large as $2.7 billion, the series' worldwide box-office haul? — one might do well to pay attention to the slightly smaller figure of Johnny Depp's paycheck for playing Captain Jack Sparrow.

A film based on a Disneyland ride! Everyone thought, .Are they high?. And Johnny Depp to boot? Well actually, that was always a good idea.

Chicago – It’s easy to remember that the Pirates of the Caribbean movie series is on its fourth formulaic film, but harder to remember that it’s based on a freaking amusement park ride! Director Rob Marshall livens it up with “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides.”
Rating: 3.5/5.0
The latest romp goes back to its roots somewhat, relying more on an intriguing narrative notion – the search for the Fountain of Youth – and less on the gaudy and distracting special effects for the sake of effects. Johnny Depp’s Jack Sparrow character seems more relaxed and focused, and adding Penélope Cruz as a romantic rival adds a spark that fills the void of the endless pirate routine and wink-at-the-camera jokes.

Written by: Ted Elliott and Terry Rossio
Starring: Johnny Depp, Penélope Cruz, Geoffrey Rush, Ian McShane, Kevin McNally, Sam Claflin and Astrid Berges-Frisbey
Johnny Depp’s iconic swashbuckler, Captain Jack Sparrow, is back in the fourth installment of the Disneyland ride-turned-multibillion-dollar “Pirates of the Caribbean” franchise. Unlike its lengthy and slightly convoluted predecessors, “On Stranger Tides” successfully stands on its own. While Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley sit this one out, to much excitement and relief, we see the return of Geoffrey Rush in addition to a myriad fresh faces including Penélope Cruz, Ian McShane and director Rob Marshall, who replaces the first three films’ Gore Verbinski at the helm.
Every wench and buccaneer has heard: The notorious Sparrow is assembling a fearless crew to set sail “On Stranger Tides” in search of the Fountain of Youth. Everyone, that is, except Sparrow himself.

“Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides” plows into theaters on May 20 with the reliable combination of Captain Jack Sparrow, special effects, swordplay and swashbuckle that audiences worldwide have so far flocked to experience. Since its inception in 2003, the franchise has accumulated no less than $3 billion — not bad for a storyline ripped from a theme-park ride, nor for a star (Johnny Depp) who once claimed that his films never made any money.
However, this fourth installment is ringing in the changes. At a recent press conference, producer Jerry Bruckheimer explains, “We finished our trilogy and paid off all our characters.”
This natural conclusion provided the opportunity for the franchise to simplify its tangled plotlines and, in turn, create shorter movies. Main characters Elizabeth Swann (Keira Knightley) and Will Turner (Orlando Bloom) have both been written out, with Sparrow (Depp), reprising his now signature role, fleshed out...
