Director Roger Donaldson has enjoyed a rewarding Hollywood career, but he began in New Zealand where this fantasy mini-epic about resistance to a political takeover became the first Kiwi picture to win an international release and launch a national film industry. The film’s young star didn’t do too badly either — the ‘ordinary guy’ who becomes rebel terrorist is played by none other than Sam Neill. Sold as an action thriller, the show is really a primer on how a democracy can be turned into a police state, with the public’s full approval.

The 1977 New Zealand thriller Sleeping Dogs Starring Sam Neill and Warren Oates will be available on Blu-ray from Arrow Academy on April 17th
Adapted from C.K. Stead s novel Smith s Dream, Sleeping Dogs almost single-handedly kickstarted the New Zealand New Wave, demonstrating that homegrown feature films could resonate with both local and international audiences, and launching the big-screen careers of director Roger Donaldson (No Way Out, Species) and Sam Neill (Jurassic Park, Possession).
Neill in his first lead role in a feature plays Smith, a man escaping the break-up of his marriage by finding isolation on an island off the Coromandel Peninsula. As he settles into his new life, the country is experiencing its own turmoil: an oil embargo has led to martial law and civil war, into which Smith reluctantly finds himself increasingly involved.

I get a perverse thrill out of terrible dialogue in movies. You know what I mean – the kind of cliched, hackneyed writing that sounds like it came right out of some washed-up actor’s mouth on a cheap cardboard set in a parody of old Hollywood. The thrilling part, you see, is that it’s more entertaining when the actors reciting the dreadful lines (and usually the filmmakers putting words in their mouths) don’t actually know that what they’re saying is utter tripe.
“You look like you’ve just seen a ghost!” one character exclaims to another at one point. That point being immediately after she’s just seen a ghost. That’s totally my jam.
As you can probably tell, I had rather a lot of fun with Ghost Bride.

Wound Movie PosterDirector David Blyth (Death Warmed Up) is a New Zealand based horror director who is no stranger to controversy. His film Angel Mine challenged censorship standards and his feature Death Warmed Up incorporated themes of matricide and patricide. Now, after a six year pause, Blyth returns with another shocking film piece entitled Wound.

Fifteen actors from The Lord of the Rings movies have filed suit against film studio New Line, accusing the company of a breach of contract over merchandising. The New Zealand actors filed court papers in Los Angeles Superior Court last Wednesday, alleging New Line broke an agreement to pay them five per cent of an estimated $100 million profits from merchandising sales, such as caps, games and mugs. The actors' lawyer Henry Gradstein said New Line took "gross participation" fees that the company wasn't entitled to. Gradstein says, "The expenses will always be approximately 104 per cent. It's Hollywood accounting." This is the latest of several lawsuits New Line have been served with in relation to the film adaptation of the J.R.R. Tolkien classic novels. In 2005, director Peter Jackson accused New Line of withholding profits from the first installment in the trilogy The Fellowship Of The Ring, while producer Saul Zaentz settled out of court with the firm over the rights to the books. According to industry newspaper Variety, the fifteen actors filing lawsuits are: Noel Appleby, Jed Brophy, Mark Ferguson, Ray Henwood, Bruce Hopkins, William Johnson, Nathaniel Lees, Sarah McLeod, Ian Mune, Paul Norell, Craig Parker, Robert Pollock, Martyn Sanderson, Peter Tait and Stephen Ure.
