As Paramount Network’s Yellowstone franchise continues to set ratings records and expand with more star-studded spinoffs, the ranch drama’s success has prompted other networks and streamers to head out West.
Amazon, sources say, is fast-tracking an untitled Western from True Detective creator Nic Pizzolatto, which Nick Pepper, its head of U.S. wholly owned series and development, is considering the streamer’s version of the Taylor Sheridan favorite. Netflix is doubling down on the genre with The Abandons, a show from Sons of Anarchy alum Kurt Sutter set in 1850s Oregon in which outlier families pursue Manifest Destiny, and American Primeval, a limited series about the birth of the American West starring Taylor Kitsch (Friday Night Lights) and written by Eric Newman (Narcos).
Other projects — including a farm-set series from Sheridan himself — are also in the works as multiple sources say execs at both linear networks...

The Yellowstone effect has reached Amazon.
The retail giant/streamer is teaming with True Detective creator Nic Pizzolatto for an untitled Western drama.
The project, which has a series commitment, is being fast-tracked by Nick Pepper as sources say Amazon’s head of U.S. wholly owned series and development is considering the Western the streamer’s version of Paramount Network mega-hit Yellowstone.
Amazon declined comment.
The series is described as in the tradition of ensemble Westerns, where larger-than-life characters rob, con and outsmart each other. It revolves around a former outlaw who must reckon with a threat from his past in order to keep the life and family he has worked so hard to build. He sets out on an epic journey that unites a formidable gang of indelible figures to face an even greater danger, in an epic saga of adventure and romance that forces this former criminal...

Exclusive: Amazon Studios is finalizing deals for Criminal, a TV adaptation of Ed Brubaker and artist Sean Phillips’ bestselling crime comic book series, sources tell Deadline.
Details are scarce but the project, written by Brubaker, who serves as executive producer and showrunner, is described as an interlocking universe of crime stories based on his award-winning comic book series. Nick Pepper, Amazon Studios’ Head of US SVOD TV Development and Series – Wholly Owned, and his lieutenant Matt King, Head of Tentpole, Genre and Universe Development of wholly owned content, are believed to have championed bringing in Criminal for development. Amazon’s future in streaming video has come into greater focus in 2022 with the acquisitions of Thursday Night Football and MGM and the debut of Lotr: The Rings Of Power. Now, the onetime bookseller is headed into 2023 without the original architect of its expansion into TV and film via Prime Video, Jeff Blackburn.
His retirement, announced on Friday, capped a month of a series of executive moves that laid out Amazon’s plans for the next stage of its evolution as an entertainment brand.
Blackburn, a 25-year Amazon veteran, most recently had served as SVP of Global Media & Entertainment, overseeing all entertainment businesses, including Prime Video and Amazon Studios, Music, Podcasts/Wondery, Audible, Games and Twitch, for the past 18 months. Blackburn, a well-liked executive within Amazon and in the Hollywood community, originally took what was supposed to be a one-year sabbatical in mid-2019. Some of his plans for travel...

Despite his outsize reputation as a prolific unscripted hitmaker — and the mythmaker who created Donald Trump’s image as a successful businessman — Mark Burnett’s departure as chairman of MGM’s Worldwide TV Group reads more like a footnote than a headline in a dramatic (and, so far, confusing to some in the creative community) ongoing executive shuffle in Amazon’s entertainment operations.
Burnett is the latest top exec to leave MGM since Amazon acquired the studio for 8.5 billion in February. Motion picture group chairman Michael De Luca and motion picture group president Pam Abdy exited in April to run Warner Bros. Discovery’s film studio. A search for a new film studio head has been underway for some time — hampered, some sources say, by internal wrangling over who would oversee that division. Michael Wright is among the key execs staying put at MGM+.
The executive has signed a new contract with new MGM parent Amazon and will continue to serve as president of the premium cable network currently known as Epix, sources tell The Hollywood Reporter. The cabler will be rebranded come January as MGM+.
MGM unscripted president Barry Poznick and COO Chris Brearton have also closed new deals with Amazon to remain involved with the storied studio. Brearton, whose title and responsibilities are expected to change, has been with MGM since early 2018 and currently oversees global business operations as well as growth initiatives. It’s unclear what his new title and role will be as those same sources say it won’t be as COO. Poznick, meanwhile, will continue to supervise unscripted programming for the cable network he joined 2016. Poznick previously reported to Mark Burnett.

In the wake of MGM television head Mark Burnett exiting the studio and Amazon on Monday, Amazon is re-organizing MGM’s TV division: folding its Orion Television label into the larger scripted side of MGM and axing the label just two years after it relaunched.
Amazon’s TV chief Vernon Sanders announced the news to staff on Tuesday in a memo obtained by IndieWire, adding that Orion TV head Bradley Gardner is exiting. Gardner is negotiating a producing deal at MGM TV.
The re-launched Orion Television was behind the rebooted “Teen Wolf: The Movie,” which is expected to stream on Paramount+ next year. Gardner came over to lead the division from Paramount Network and focused on comedy and drama series for the label.

Nick Pepper, Head of Studio Creative Content, and Laura Lancaster, Head of Series, are expected to divvy up Resteghini’s responsibilities and co-run development and production of TV content, reporting to Sanders. MGM TV’s operations remain separate and do not factor into the current executive changes.
A rep for Amazon Studios declined comment.
Resteghini, Pepper and Lancaster were named to their most recent roles in early 2021 as part of an Amazon Studios TV restructuring that created the layer of three top programming positions reporting to then-Amazon Studios co-heads of TV Sanders and Albert Cheng (who also was COO).

Josh Richards, the TikTok star and co-founder of CrossCheck Studios, will create and produce TV content exclusively for Amazon Studios under a first-look deal, the company said on Thursday.
It’s not immediately clear what kind of shows Richards will be creating and producing for the studio, but an Amazon Studios spokesperson told The Hollywood Reporter that the deal does not outline a set number of shows that Richards must produce.
Amazon will also take advantage of Richards’ social media bona fides by tapping the creator and entrepreneur to make custom social content for Amazon Studios IP and other brands available on Amazon’s streaming service, Prime Video, like Thursday Night Football, which Amazon acquired the exclusive rights to this year.
Additional terms of the deal, which was first reported by Variety, were not disclosed.

Spoiler alert: This story contains details from tonight’s Quantico series finale.
After three seasons on ABC, the Priyanka Chopra-starring FBI thriller Quantico has come to an end, and left little on the table.
Action-packed series finale “Who Are You?” takes us back to Dublin, Ireland—to a church where Eamon Devlin’s funeral is being held. Boldly striding into the church, even with on-again, off-again FBI agent Alex Parrish (Priyanka Chopra) sitting in the pews—and her fellow FBI agents standing outside, taking photographs of funeral attendees—Conor Devlin delivers his eulogy.
He speaks about his son, murdered by Americans—the same Americans who put him in chains, and murdered his brother to boot. (Fake news: It was in fact Conor who took his own brother’s life.)
Calling out the FBI agents in the room as murderers, Devlin vows to give up all vendettas and blood feuds against his fellow Irishmen.

Nathan Fillion is back at his former Castle network home, ABC, this time in a police uniform, on The Rookie.
The Rookie is the newest vehicle for Nathan Fillion, who, of course, is best known for his starring role as Captain Malcolm Reynolds on Fox’s ignominiously axed, ahead-of-its-time 2002-2003 space/sci-fi/western series, Firefly, and a 2009-2016 run – opposite Stana Katic – as the title star of ABC crime procedural Castle. Now, two years after that series came to a (controversially sloppy) close, Fillion returns to ABC on this freshman cop series that mixes hard crime drama with some occasional Fillion levity.
In the latest news, ABC has just made a full season order for The Rookie, adding seven more episodes to its previous thirteen, bringing the currently-running Season 1 to a new total of 20 episodes.
The series debuted on ABC on October 16 as a Tuesday night primetime offering,...

Here is the first major discovery of 2014 pilot season. Young Australian actress Sarah Snook has been cast in the title role of ABC‘s drama pilot Clementine, from the Mark Gordon Co. and ABC Studios. Written by feature scribe Dean Georgaris, Clementine centers on troubled 28-year-old psychic Clementine Ross (Snook) who sees her life begin to change in unexpected ways when she decides to stop running from her past. David Strathairn was recently cast as her father. Mark Gordon Co.’s Gordon and Nicholas Pepper exec produce with Ilene Staple. This marks the first U.S. TV role for Snook, who had been on the radar of the Clementine producers for a while, since before the script was picked up to pilot. I hear she was suggested by the project’s casting director, Tricia Wood, who is a friend of Georgaris. Snook recently flew to Los Angeles for her first U.

ABC looks to be dipping its toes in the "supernatural drama" pool again as word has come that the network has ordered a pilot for “Clementine,” which Mark Gordon ("Criminal Minds," "Grey's Anatomy") is executive producing. Details are sparse, but here's what we know so far...
Per The Wrap, the storyline, written by Dean Georgaris (Tristan + Isolde, Paycheck), revolves around a habitual criminal who digs into the mystery of her origins after she becomes the target of a group of zealots who fear she possesses latent supernatural abilities that she will one day harness for either profound good or monstrous evil.
Along with The Mark Gordon Co., Nicholas Pepper and Ilene Staple are also executive producing.

Exclusive: Lost alumna Emilie de Ravin is set to co-star in another ABC drama series project, pilot Americana, a soap about a famous fashion industry clan. It centers on iconic fashion designer Robert Soulter (Anthony Lapaglia), the patriarch of a sprawling family who just welcomed a new member, a young designer whose shocking arrival turns the family and the legendary label inside out.
