Showrun by Oscar-nominated Danish director Lone Sherfig, “The Shift” will battle it out with Series Mania top winner “Blackport” and Canneseries winner “Countrymen” for 2022’s 6th Nordisk Film & TV Fond Prize.
Also in contention are Finnish crime drama “Transport” and psychological thriller “Vi y Villa,” an early show from Sweden’s Discovery Plus.
All five titles, however diverse, underscore the strong social issue drive of much upscale Nordic and indeed European drama, affording a snapshot of larger tensions coursing society at large.
Winners of the Nordic TV Drama Screenplay Award, which goes to a show’s main writer, will receive a €20,000 cash prize, announced during the Göteborg Film Festival’s TV Drama Vision, a highlight of the festival, on Feb. 2.

With executive producers/writers Larry Charles, Matt Nix, Ben Wexler, and Billy Crystal, FX‘s new sit-com order for The Comedians should be about the closest thing television has to a slam dunk. Add Josh Gad to the cast, and build it off of something we already know is a pretty solid format, and it looks like FX has the next great show locked up.
Having just announced a 13-episode order based on the Swedish show of the same name, this is one you’re going to hear about a lot in the future, and by the time it rolls around, a lot of people are going to be pretty excited for this one. It’s one thing to build a new version of a show that is, reportedly, already a strong series, but it’s quite another to throw in a mix of Arrested Development, Burn Notice, and Curb Your Enthusiasm.

Update 12:30 Pm: FX just confirmed the series pickup of The Comedians, which has received a 13-episode order and will begin production later this year for a 2015 launch. Related: 2014 FX Pilots Previous Exclusive: Billy Crystal is returning to primetime. There is no official word, but I have learned that FX has picked up half-hour pilot The Comedians, toplined by the actor-comedian, to series. The Comedians, based on the 2004 Swedish series Ulveson And Herngren, stars Crystal as a superstar veteran comedian who is reluctantly paired with a younger, edgier comic (Josh Gad) for a late-night comedy sketch show. The project hails from an all-star creative team. Curb Your Enthusiasm and Borat‘s Larry Charles directed the pilot from a script he co-wrote with Crystal, Burn Notice creator Matt Nix, and Ben Wexler. The four executive produce with Mikkel Bondesen and Henrik Bastin of Fabrik Entertainment for Fox TV Studios. Carl Molinder...

At its upfront presentation in March, FX announced that it was launching a new channel, Fxx, focused on comedy. "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia," "The League," "Legit" and "Totally Biased With W. Kamau Bell" will shift to the sister network when it launches this fall, but there will also obviously be more room for new originals on both. And one of those could by "The Comedians," a half-hour, single-camera comedy starring Billy Crystal as a showbiz veteran who gets paired with an edgy up-and-comer on a late-night sketch show. "The Comedians" pilot will be directed by Larry Charles ("Curb Your Enthusiasm," "Borat"), and is written and executive produced by Charles, Crystal, Matt Nix ("Burn Notice") and Ben Wexler ("Community"). It's produced by Fox Television Studios and is an adaptation of the Swedish series "Ulveson and Herngren," which was a mockumentary starring Johan Ulveson and Felix Herngren as themselves. I’ve put up a lot on Let Me In already, but now that some good notes are coming back from Toronto, I have six more clips to share. Speaking of Toronto, I confusingly heard someone say it was, “too true to the original,” whatever that might mean. I suppose it could indicate the lack of necessity in creating something that was too close to the material it’s working from, but it struck me as odd.
At any rate, I’ve be hearing good press from those who have managed to take it in, and if you’ve seen the original, this is surely something that is on the top of the list of things to look forward to.
I’ve put the clips together into a playlist, along with the trailer and an earlier clip I had, so take them in and enjoy. And, let me know what you think.

As the great and good are quickly ushered out of London's salubrious Royal Opera House, shoved into the nearest waiting limo and whisked to their respective after-show parties, the time has come to tally and take stock of the big winners at this year's British Academy Film Awards.
As with all of the major films awards of 2010 thus far, the big battle at this year's Baftas was between James Cameron's Avatar and his ex-wife Kathryn Bigelow's The Hurt Locker and the big winner on the night was Ms Bigelow who blew away all the competition with a grand total of six awards including (surprisingly but brilliantly) Best Film and Best Director. Avatar, meanwhile, was relegated to two relatively minor awards for Best Production Design and Best Special Effects.

The nominations for the British Academy of Film and Television Arts awards were announced this morning, and leading with eight each are An Education, Avatar, and The Hurt Locker. The line-up looks much like what we’ve seen in earlier awards with the obvious skew towards British-born selections like Carey Mulligan, underrated comedy In the Loop, and first time director Duncan Jones.
Notable snubs include Bright Star shut out in every category but costume, Avatar missing a spot for screenplay to The Hangover, and Sam Rockwell for Moon.
Winners will be announced February 21. Here are the nominees:
Best Film
Avatar James Cameron, Jon Landau
An Education Amanda Posey, Finola Dwyer
The Hurt Locker Nominees Tbc
Precious: Based On The Novel Push By Sapphire Lee Daniels, Sarah Siegel-Magness, Gary Magness

Films getting the nod include Avatar (obviously!) and some perhaps more deserving films such as The Hurt Locker and our very own An Education - which have all collected nominations in eight categories.

Photo: Orange British Academy Film Awards Today the nominations for the 2010 Orange British Academy Film Awards were announced and Avatar, An Education and The Hurt Locker lead the way with eight nominations each followed closely by District 9 with seven and Inglourious Basterds and Up In the Air each pulling in six each. The only film not amongst the nomination leaders that was nominated for Best Film is Lionsgate's Precious: Based on the Novel 'Push' by Sapphire, which did manage four nominations.
Looking over the nominations there are a few that stand out as breaking from the norm, such as Neill Blomkamp (District 9) and Lone Scherfig (An Education) both getting directorial nominations alongside James Cameron, Kathryn Bigelow and Quentin Tarantino. Both District 9 and An Education have enjoyed plenty of love during the awards season, but this is a nice bonus that both Blomkamp and Scherfig should be proud of.

2009 was an amazing year for British film. The BAFTA longlist has James Cameron’s Avatar and Jason Reitman’s Up In The Air go up against Tarantino’s glorious Basterds and our pick of the year, Duncan Jones’ sublime Moon, we also have A Single Man and An Education showcasing a wealth of talent.
In The Loop is picking up screenwriting awards and Carey Mulligan’s disappointment at the Golden Globes earlier this week may be short lived. Will Avatar leaves will a handful of golden faces to go with its solar system of globes? That so many great films are being placed under a BAFTA shaped spotlight is a testament to the variety and capability of the actors, directors and crews working today.
The BAFTA shortlist is a clear indication that there is much to celebrate in the industry and while the winners may divide critics and audiences when...

I was completely unaware that Tomas Alfredson's Let the Right One In (review) was even being optioned for a remake, considering it's such a new film. The vampire tale has caught the eye of Hammer Films, and a certain monster director has been tapped to helm the U.S. adaptation.
Matt (Cloverfield) Reeves has been given the task to Americanize the Swedish book-turned-film for a 2009 release date according to Variety. No casting news was mentioned, but we know that Swedish producers John Nordling and Carl Molinder will co-produce with the team of Hammer's Simon Oakes and Spitfire's Guy East and Nigel Sinclair.
Hammer and Spitfire films nabbed up the rights to Let the Right One In during 2008's Tribeca Film Festival.

"Cloverfield" director Matt Reeves has signed to write and direct the horror remake "Let the Right One In" for Overture Films and Hammer Films.
The Swedish horror film, "Lat den ratte komma in," about a bullied boy whose desire for revenge becomes intertwined with his growing love for a girl who happens to be a vampire, began showing at festivals at the beginning of the year. Hammer Films picked up the remake rights in May after the film won the best narrative feature award at the Tribeca Film Festival.
The original film's source material is a bestselling novel by John Ajvide Lindqvist.
"I was immediately taken by both the novel and the Swedish film of 'Let the Right One In,' which are just so unique," Reeves said. "I found them not only terrifying but incredibly moving, and I am very excited about adapting them into an American context."
