Oppenheimer, Maestro, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse and Society of the Snow were the big film winners at the Motion Picture Sound Editors‘ 71st Golden Reel Awards, which were handed out Sunday night at the Wilshire Ebell Theatre in Los Angeles. See the full list below.

The sound in “Dunkirk” is crucial for this almost-silent, radically structured action movie. And “War for the Planet of the Apes” is also relatively dialogue light–except when Woody Harrelson’s Kurtz-like Colonel and Andy Serkis as Caesar explode in a dramatic face-off. And each time Ryan Gosling’s K in “Blade Runner,” Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman or Ansel Elgort’s Baby Driver enters a new landscape, the sound design clues us into what’s going on.

A handful of people ended up with multiple Oscar nominations this year, and a number of them are names you've heard. Alejandro G. Iñárritu, for instance, was nominated for producing, directing and writing "Birdman." Wes Anderson and Richard Linklater picked up the same trio for "The Grand Budapest Hotel" and "Boyhood" respectively, while Anthony McCarten double dipped for producing and writing "The Theory of Everything." And of course the prolific composer Alexandre Desplat was nominated for his work on both "Grand Budapest" and "The Imitation Game." Hollywood’s sound pros nominated Birdman and Dawn of the Planet of the Apes for three awards apiece as the Motion Picture Sound Editors unveiled nods for its 62nd Mpse Golden Reel Awards, honoring the best feature film, television, animation and computer entertainment work of the year.
“2014 was a fantastic year for sound,” said Mpse president Frank Morrone. “The advent of new distribution channels, streaming services and gaming platforms is creating additional opportunities for sound artists to practice their craft beyond the traditional venues of film and television. This year’s nominations reflect that change, spanning an amazing diversity of mediums and genres, all executed at the highest level of creativity. We are truly inspired and impressed by the work of our colleagues.”

Soundworks Collection has posted a new featurette taking a look at the sound design of Man of Steel with re-recording mixer Chris Jenkins, re-recording mixer Frank A. Montano, supervising sound editor and designer Eric Norris, supervising sound editor and designer Scott Hecker and dialogue supervisor Kira Roessler and it's one of their better ones. Personally I love it when they go into detail as to how they developed the sounds far more than just discussing the motivations behind things. Here you'll see why they dropped a 9,000 pound K-rail and and what they were doing with glass beads and a child's toy xylophone. Obviously I haven't started my sound design and mixing predictions for the 2014 Oscars and while I am already leaning toward Oblivion as a major contender, the work in Man of Steel won't be forgotten. "There are only two ways to approach Broadway shows becoming movies," Yeston says. "One of them is to be an over-controlling fuddy-duddy and not let anybody change anything. The other is to step back and go with the new medium." For Yeston, "The adaptation back into film was a very organic one that made a tremendous amount of sense. It was a great opportunity to allow this piece -- which had been so cinematic to begin with -- to find again its place in the grammar of cinema.
