Filmmaker and horror stalwart Larry Fessenden has dedicated an extensive career to independent horror. Fessenden continues to deliver unique interpretations of familiar movie monsters, from the vampiric Habit to a modern Frankenstein retelling with 2019’s Depraved. His latest, Blackout, brings a contemporary horror drama centered around a Wolfman.
Blackout, which just debuted at Fantasia International Film Festival (our review), follows small town artist Charley (Alex Hurt), a tortured man whose drinking binges blur with his sneaking suspicion that he might likely be a werewolf.
After the film’s premiere, Bloody Disgusting spoke with the multi-hyphenate writer/director/editor/producer about his love of monsters, his old-fashioned werewolf, and what he’d love to tackle next.
Blackout may be modern in storytelling, but its werewolf harkens back to the bipedal Wolfmen of the ’30s and ’40s. That was always Fessenden’s vision.
He explains his werewolf design, “Ever since I was little,...

"Werewolf By Night" has arrived on Disney+ just in time for the spooky season and luckily, it rules/ The Marvel special stars Gael Garcia Bernal as Jack Russell, a man who transforms into the titular beast under the light of the full moon. Other notable Marvel characters appearing in the special are Elsa Bloodstone (Laura Donnelly) and Ted Sallis (Carey Jones), aka Man-Thing — who looks amazing by the way. The special is a bold swing for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, something that has felt increasingly rare as of late, and director/composer Michael Giacchino has brought this formerly unexplored corner of Marvel Comics to brilliant life.
Comics got increasingly weird throughout the '50s and '60s as creators struggled to work around the harsh restrictions imposed by the Comics Code Authority — seriously, some of those stories are wild! By the '70s, the Cca had relaxed a bit and...

This article contains spoilers for "Werewolf by Night."
"Werewolf by Night," the latest film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, is being presented as a "special presentation." This means, one can presume, that its events won't be as heavily incorporated into the rest of the MCU in the same fashion its theatrical counterparts are. "Werewolf By Night" comes from a specially branded corner of Marvel Comics usually reserved for monsters, demons, and other supernatural creatures of the night. Ghost Rider, Blade, and Morbius the Living Vampire also hail from this corner. Werewolf by Night was originally created in 1972 by Roy Thomas, Jean Thomas, Gerry Conway, and Mike Ploog. The character is a man named Jack Russell (nothing to do with the breed of terrier) who, true to his name, becomes a wolf man every full moon. Fittingly, the original "Werewolf by Night" comics were written by a man named Marv Wolfman.

In the dead of night, at a remote mansion tucked far away from prying eyes, a group of men and women convene. They’re appearances are all the more ghastly by the room’s atmospheric lighting; some seem to have not slept or seen sunlight for days. Each person eyes the others warily. Servants come and go. Finally, a person at the center of the room rises and addresses the assembled. There is a mission, completed before the sun rises. Whomever emerges victorious from this contest of wills shall not...

By this time next week, Marvel’s first Halloween Special will be upon us. Werewolf By Night may seem like a one-off, but Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige explained in a recent featurette that the world they’re introducing “will ultimately become quite important to the future of the MCU.” You can check out the Werewolf By Night featurette for yourself above!
Werewolf By Night takes place on a dark and somber night as a secret cabal of monster hunters emerge from the shadows and gather at the foreboding Bloodstone Temple following the death of their leader. In a strange and macabre memorial to the leader’s life, the attendees are thrust into a mysterious and deadly competition for a powerful relic—a hunt that will ultimately bring them face to face with a dangerous monster. “We wanted to explore entirely new characters and entirely new sides of the MCU with this unusual,...

There's no such thing as risk for the MCU anymore. As long as the active flagship characters like Spider-Man, Thor, and Ant-Man keep packing 'em in theatrically, Kevin Feige and his Marvel Studios brain trust can afford to use Disney+ as a laboratory/playground to bring the company's cult characters to life and see if there's an audience for further adventures — hence "Moon Knight," "She-Hulk: Attorney at Law," and "Wonder Man."
Still, did anyone see "Werewolf by Night" coming? Created and developed in 1972 by the team of Roy Thomas, Jean Thomas, Gerry Conway, and Mike Ploog, the series allowed Marvel to pay homage to the bloody horror comics published by EC, the famously subversive label that spurred uptight cultural scolds to form the censorious Comics Code Authority. The lycanthrope main character, Jack Russell, found enough of a readership to earn a standalone series, but this was still a niche character,...

Marvel Studios has unveiled details and the first trailer for ‘Werewolf by Night’, the upcoming MCU Halloween special set to premiere October 7 on Disney+ this fall. Gael Garcia Bernal stars in the special as Jack Russell, known in Marvel Comics as the Werewolf by Night. Created by Gerry Conway and Mike Ploog in 1972, Jack is an ordinary man who carries an ancient family curse that turns him into a werewolf.
After managing to conquer his beastly nature, he becomes a wandering hero who uses his powers to fight demons and other forces of evil, frequently intersecting with other Marvel heroes in the process, reports Variety.
Laura Donnelly will star alongside Bernal in an undisclosed role. Michael Giacchino, who has worked as a composer on Marvel films such as ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ and ‘Thor: Love and Thunder’, directs the special. Marvel Studios chief Kevin Feige, Louis D’Esposito and Victoria Alonso executive produce.

Among the more exciting bits of news at the 2022 D23 Expo was a trailer for Werewolf by Night. A one-off Halloween special coming to Disney+ on October 7, Werewolf by Night not only brings a cult Marvel character to live-action, but it also serves as the directorial debut of Michael Giacchino, the Academy Award-winning composer who wrote the scores for Spider-Man: No Way Home, The Batman, and more.
Cursed with lycanthropy, Jack Russell made his debut in 1972’s Marvel Spotlight #2, written by Roy Thomas, Jean Thomas, and Gerry Conway, and penciled by Mike Ploog. To capitalize on the renewed interest in horror comics, Russell soon jumped to his own series Werewolf by Night, which took him around the Marvel Universe to battle against all manner of paranormal baddies. One of my most anticipated Marvel Cinematic Universe projects is perhaps the one I know the least about — Werewolf By Night. Starring Gael García Bernal and Laura Donnelly, Werewolf By Night will be Marvel’s first Halloween special and an incredibly fun teaser trailer was released at the D23 Expo.
If you’re a fan of black and white horror filled with pulpy goodness, then Werewolf By Night will be right up your alley. With influences from classic Universal Horror and Hammer Horror (it also brought back memories of The Beast Must Die), there’s a lot of great imagery in the teaser, including a split second glimpse at Man-Thing. But for me, Harriet Sansom Harris steals the damn show. I know the actress best thanks to her roles on The X-Files and Frasier, but she’s a force of nature in everything she appears in. I’m beyond thrilled...

Marvel’s Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D. gets spooky as we meet the team’s new boss - a heroic blast from Marvel’s past...
This review contains spoilers.
4.1 Meet The New Boss
I’ve been recapping Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. for Den Of Geek Us since the premiere. To be honest, while I still enjoyed the series immensely last year, it was kind of a chore (I know, first world nerd problems). Every episode was pretty much the same. Inhumans machinations and intrigue and Hydra, Hydra, Hydra. The show was enjoyable, but it was rather hard to write about. Maybe that’s why I’m really enjoying this new direction Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D. is taking. The focus on the supernatural and the rebuilding of S.H.I.E.L.D. in a post-Civil War world has brought a new lease of life to Marvel’s inaugural TV series.

Nearly 35 years after its release, John Carpenter’s The Thing remains one of the greatest—if not the greatest—horror movies of all-time. A masterpiece of dread, tension, nihilism, and staggeringly imaginative practical effects, it is a high-water mark of the genre and the best movie ever made by a filmmaker with a lot of great movies to his credit. This is John Carpenter’s masterpiece.
By now, you know the story. For this loose remake of Christian Nyby’s (and Howard Hawks’) 1951 sci-fi classic, The Thing from Another World, Carpenter and screenwriter Bill Lancaster went back to John Campbell Jr.’s original story “Who Goes There?” to tell the tale of a research team in the Antarctic who encounter an alien life form with the ability to assimilate and imitate any being it encounters. Totally isolated by the freezing temperatures and snowy landscape, the men can no longer be...

Marvel Studios may have retained the film rights to Ghost Rider following his two Columbia Pictures movies, but that doesn't mean the spirit of vengeance's legal woes are over. Deadline reports that a federal appeals court overturned the 2011 ruling that landed in Marvel's favor regarding the character's ownership. Now if creator Gary Friedrich wants to take Marvel back to court in the hopes of wresting control of the character, he's free to do so.
Friedrich had a hand in creating two different versions of Ghost Rider, the most popular being Johnny Blaze, who debuted in 1972's "Marvel Spotlight" #5. Nicolas Cage brought Johnny Blaze to life in two Ghost Rider films: 2007's "Ghost Rider" and 2012's "Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance."

While guys like Steven Spielberg, Francis Ford Coppola and George Lucas spent the 1970s reinventing live action moviemaking, animation had just one lone figure toiling away. Ralph Bakshi, trained on Terrytoons and involved in 1960s television animation, began exploring the possibilities of animated features in the shadow of Walt Disney’s death. His Fritz the Cat made people sit up and take notice, followed by Heavy Traffic, and Coonskin – urban, funky, raw tales set in a familiar world.

We thought this was settled by now. Certainly Marvel Comics should know it. But apparently not. In the recent trade paperback, Spider-Man Fights Substance Abuse, we find this blurb on the credits page:
The creators of Spider-Man, Storm, and Power Man are unknown.
Apparently, Marvel is having some substance abuse problems of their own over there, or this is the latest salvo in the Disneyfication of Marvel where they decide they own everything, and it was all created by nameless workers.
Since some people at Marvel appear to be on drugs themselves, let us make this perfectly clear:
Spider-Man was created by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko. Storm was created by Len Wein and Dave Cockrum. Power Man was created by Archie Goodwin and John Romita Sr.
Oh, and while we’re on the subject:
Ghost Rider was created by Roy Thomas, Gary Friedrich, and Mike Ploog.
Hopefully, we won’t have to repeat this.

The Marvel Comics character of Ghost Rider has always been more than a little alternative. Considerably darker and more haunted that contemporaries like Spider-Man and the Hulk, the demonic creation of trio Roy Thomas, Gary Friedrich and Mike Ploog found himself starring in more horror-centric stories, only ocassionally clashing with sunnier heroes in sales-boosting stunts. While the comic creation existed on the fringe of the industry, Mark Steven Johnson's 2007 adaptation "Ghost Rider" was a far more generic, populist attempt to appeal to the masses. It was, by design, a pop song, except it viewed itself as a catchier Massive Attack track when it was more of an O-Town b-side. Bring the kiddies. Fortunately, the decision to spring for a new creative tream led to "Ghost Rider: Spirit Of Vengeance," which, in intention and execution, is pure metal. Within Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor's film is the spirit of industrial guitars crashing against each.

Whether you're excitedly planning on seeing "Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance" this weekend or scoffing at the absurdity of paying to watch Nic Cage urinate fire (in 3D), there's an ugly publicity battle going on behind-the-scenes between the Disney corporation and a 68-year-old former comic book writer in ill health. It concerns the complicated field of U.S. Copyright Law and is a clear example of the lack of ethics that exist in both the comic book industry, an artform that touts its super-heroics and moral inspiration, and the Walt Disney Company. Gary Friedrich, former writer for Marvel Comics has been involved in a long dispute over his claim as the creator of "Ghost Rider," the motorcycle-riding, flaming-skullhead monster that made a worldwide gross of $228 million when Sony Pictures adapted the character for the big screen in 2007. He brought a lawsuit toward Marvel, in an attempt to get royalties he felt he was due.

Rights to the Marvel Comics' character "Ghost Rider", adapted into two feature films starring Nicolas Cage as a demonic, bike-riding, flaming skull-head, belong entirely to Marvel Comics and not to the character's freelance creator, writer Gary Friedrich, according to Manhattan federal court judge Katherine Forrest.
Friedrich developed the original 'Ghost Rider' character with Marvel editor Roy Thomas and illustrator Mike Ploog.
Although the character debuted in 1972, in "Marvel Spotlight" #5, it was not until 2004 that Friedrich began considering legal action against Marvel, after first learning about development of a movie adaptation.
In his lawsuit, Friedrich claimed Marvel infringed on his rights and that he owned the character and its use in films, toys, video games and other merchandise.
The judge disagreed, finding that Friedrich had relinquished his rights to "Ghost Rider" as soon as he started cashing checks from Marvel.
"If Friedrich... had any rights to the character or...

Since the character's creator Gary Friedrich found out about the first film adaption from Columbia Pictures in 2004, the freelance comics writer began his battle to contest Marvel's stake in conversions to other media. Now, with that movie's sequel just around the corner, New York Federal Judge Katherine Forrest has made a decision in the media giant's favor. Ghost Rider is the name of several Marvel Comics supernatural antiheroes appearing in comic books, cartoons and films . Though Friedrich is credited with creating Ghost Rider, the "Marvel Method" was such that the character exchanged hands to artist Mike Ploog and editor Roy Thomas, which is a process that has led to much litigation. Most notably, Jack Kirby's estate has been trying for some time to regain rights to several Silver...

It’s been 28 years since John Carpenter stood on the refrigerated Los Angeles set and gave directions on The Thing, his remake of the 1951 black and white sci-fi red scare classic film. When Carpenter made his version of The Thing, he had several great people contributing to what I and many horror fans consider one of the greatest monster movies of cinema: great source material in the form of John W. Campbell’s short story “Who Goes There?”; comic book giants like Mike Ploog and Bernie Wrightson contributing the conceptual artwork of the creature design; a minimal but infinitely moody atmospheric score by Ennio Morricone; a talented group of actors making up the doomed men of U.S. Outpost 31; and finally what I consider the most important element of the film, the sheer genius of a then 21-year-old make-up effects artist by the name of Rick Bottin. For anyone that...

In 2009 Blur reformed after kind of going on hiatus a bit after releasing 2003’s brilliant Think Tank which is perfect night driving music. They played a few shows during the summer (Hyde Park, Glastonbury), and called it quits again. On April 17, 2010 Blur released a 7” single called “Fool’s Day” completely out of nowhere. And it’s pretty good. Funny that they say they’re recording an album and decide to break up, but then they reform, break up again, and then release a single. Of course, these are the same boys who created Britpop and quickly abandoned it to be indie art-rockers.

Marvel used to have various comics under the 2099 label, exploring what the Marvel Universe would look like in the late 21st century. We learned that corporations ruled the U.S., modern superheroes were considered myths, and Thor had inspired the "Thorite" religion. Writer/director David "Blade" Goyer is drafting a screenplay for Marvel's "Ghost Rider 2", following the 2007 feature's worldwide box office take of $228,738,393.
Actor Nic Cage will return in a 'darker' interpretation of flaming skull-head 'Johnny Blaze', a former stunt motorcyclist who morphs into a demon vigilante, in a 'darker' interpretation of the character.
Goyer said the new film will not be a 'reboot', but a serious sequel, picking up eight years after the first film, in an "existential place."
In the original film, Cage rode a Buell motorcycle for Blaze's stunt cycle and a heavily customized hardtail chopper named 'Grace' that transformed into the 'Hell Cycle'.
"Ghost Rider" debuted in Marvel Comics "Marvel Spotlight" #5 (Aug. 1972), created by editor Roy Thomas, writer Gary Friedrich and artist Mike Ploog.

Nicolas Cage, the star of 2007's "Ghost Rider", recently revealed his idea for "Ghost Rider 2", stating that he's looking less toward "sequel" and more toward "reboot" for the next film. "I would like to do a reconceive," the 45-year-old actor stated in an interview with MTV News. "I would like to go in a whole other direction, and I think that's what they're talking about."
When asked what kind of reconception he exactly meant, Cage explained, "I would make it much less of a Western and more of an international story." The "National Treasure" actor, who has expressed his willingness to reprise his role as Johnny Blaze, further uttered that the new concept will still include the early rumored storyline, which is to bring the skull-faced character in a battle with evil in Europe alongside the Catholic Church.

It’s nice to see people remember that L. Frank Baum wrote stories featuring characters other than the Wonderful Wizard of Oz. In fact, he also tackled someone even more impressive: Santa Claus.
